The team gathered survey and interview data prior to implementing the debriefs about the care team's experiences of these difficult events, and then piloted a clinically responsive intervention. Here the research team discusses preliminary findings and what other chaplains need to know about implementing post-traumatic debriefings for care staff. In this week's episode, Chris speaks with Veteran Chaplain Adrian Dixon on his journey of becoming a spiritual leader as a Resident Chaplain at Duke Raleigh Hospital. While still in Divinity school, Adrian started working as a Staff Chaplain at Duke Raleigh Hospital providing pastoral services to patients.Through his diligent work, he slowly expanded the Chaplain program to include a new clinical pastoral program “Care For Eachother (CFE)”, a partnership with Duke University Hospital, and a team of five full-time chaplain residents and 8 to 10 interns to provide pastoral services. Adrian also shares two emotional stories that have resonated with him over his nearly 20 years with Duke. The first recounts a past patient's recovery and recognizes the gift of presence and the effect his support meant to the patient. The other talks about a dying patient's last wishes and how Adrian handled and came to terms with his final requests. Through these stories, Adrian shows how by simply being present and providing support during times of need deep connections can be created between patients, doctors, friends, families, and teammates. Furthermore, drawing from his own journey through illness at a young age, Adrian urges listeners to never lose faith and let the “seed of fear” deter them from pursuing the life and goals they want.Through diligent work and unwavering faith in God, Adrian overcame his obstacles and is destined to help his followers and patients do the same.More About Our Guest:Adrian is an experienced Chaplain Services & education department administrator with a demonstrated history of working in the hospital & health care industry. That is the thing that becomes this fuel that allows us to reinvest in our meditation, double down, and go a little bit deeper.” – Lama Justin von Bujdoss Take the journey to authenticity with Buddhist writer, speaker, and broadcaster, Kelly Carlin on Ep. 71 of the BHNN Guest Podcast Breaking Relationship to Habit Mind // Social Justice & Equity Work (30:00) Sharing on the powerful Tibetan Buddhist practices of Dzogchen and Mahamudra, Lama Justin and Francesca dig deep into the power encased in breaking/disrupting our momentum-driven relationship with our habit-mind through short, but frequent meditation sessions. From here, they dive into how to apply Tantric Buddhist practices to social justice and equity work in the real world. “There's a long thread of practice style around a meditation called Mahamudra, which is very similar to Dzogchen, advising people to sit for short periods, like 12 minutes, where it's really about breaking up the habit, rather than one long grueling session where your mind goes numb and you find yourself suffering. Sometimes there's more power in breaking up our relationship to habit-mind in these shorter sessions.” – Lama Justin von Bujdoss
