What (and why) can and can't we say? What do empirical examples both at home and abroad tell us about how we should protect freedom of speech? How do we create an environment where speech is not only permitted but encouraged? Does freedom of speech bring people together or sow discord? Nadine Strossen, former president of the ACLU and Professor Emerita at New York Law School, brings her decades of expertise to bear explaining why freedom of speech is foundational to so many other fundamental rights. Nadine Strossen is Professor Emerita at New York Law School, and was national President of the American Civil Liberties Union from 1991-2008. She is a Senior Fellow with FIRE (the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression) and a leading expert and frequent speaker/media commentator on constitutional law and civil liberties, who has testified before Congress on multiple occasions. She is the author of HATE: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech, Not Censorship (Oxford UP, 2018) and Free Speech: What Everyone Needs to Know (Oxford UP, 2023). She is the Host and Project Consultant for Free To Speak, a 3-hour documentary film series released in October. You can also find her remarks "Current Free Speech Controversies" with the Madison Program here. Welcome to Episode 79 of the Think UDL podcast: Higher Ed and K-12 Partnerships with Mary Budzilowicz and Lauren Benfield. Mary Budzilowicz is the Director of the Center for Universal Design for Learning Technology and Resources at Cabrini University and Lauren Benfield is a Project Consultant in the Office of Professional Learning of the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit in Pennsylvania. I usually interview just one person each episode, but today I am very glad to have representatives of both sides of this UDL partnership. My guests and I are specifically going to talk about the incredible work that Cabrini University and Montgomery County schools have forged in recent years to link UDL in their Higher Ed and teacher education programs with K-12 implementation by creating professional learning communities and operationalizing UDL in their local schools. This episode is chock full of resources that Mary and Lauren and their team have meticulously created and gathered over the past several years, so please be sure to check those out on the episode 79 webpage where you'll see padlets, wakelets, curated resources, and original videos, infographics, and webpages to jump start your partnerships or perhaps start your own thinking about a UDL center on your campus! During our conversation, at one point Lauren mentions the 2018-2019 school year when the membership exploded with more and more attendees but was then interrupted by the pandemic. After our taping she corrected that to the 2019-2020 school year, and you'll just have to stay tuned to hear how they handled, and even expanded, after that interruption! They are so creative and have so much to share! Thank you for listening and a special thank you to the folks at the UDLHE Network for their financial support of the Think UDL podcast!

Debbie Bing is President and Principal at CFAR (Center for Applied Research) where she uses her conflict-resolution and negotiation expertise to help family businesses and other organizations build collaborative approaches to their most pressing business challenges. Debbie talks about the emotional and strategic layers that family businesses are faced with when it comes time to engage with the new leaders, spouses, or the next generation. She speaks to her background in mediation and conflict-resolution. Tune in as Debbie addresses conflict, risk, and how the next generation should step out and step into roles where they can use their skills and perspectives for their families. IN THIS EPISODE: [01:24] CFAR's history [03:12] How founders and the next generation can work together [10:30] How to include new family members into a family business [15:55] How Debbie views conflict, strategy, and growth [20:17] Women and the next generation in family businesses KEY TAKEAWAYS: One of the first questions that's important for founders and families to be asking and thinking about when they're thinking about continuity with future generations, is what are their goals. Determining explicitly, what are the rules of the road for new generations entering the business? There are so many layers underneath what presents as a conflict. It's an opportunity to understand a source of difference. Explore what the conflict is representing and you will likely find something that is useful for decision-making in future choices. Since the pandemic, many businesses have a need for a wider set of skills and backgrounds. This has led to an increase of entry from the next generation, of all kinds and certainly women. LINKS MENTIONED: www.cfar.com LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/debbiebing/ https://oconnorpg.com/podcasts/family-enterprise-when-strategy-collides-with-vision-and-values-with-debbie-bing BIO: Debbie Bing, President and Principal, began at CFAR as a Project Consultant in 1998, became an Associate in 1999, and a Principal in 2006. Her assumption of the Presidency in 2016 represents the shift to CFAR's Second Generation of Leaders. Debbie is also a member of CFAR's Board of Directors and co-leads the firm's Family Enterprise and Owner-Led Business practice. As a second-generation owner of CFAR, she draws on personal experience in working through the dilemmas of strategy and succession. Debbie views conflict as a useful starting point for a productive exchange about organizational priorities and performance. She has led negotiation teams in the Middle East and in Eastern Europe, and uses that expertise to help business leaders and executive teams in family businesses, entrepreneurial organizations, universities, associations and foundations to build collaborative approaches to their most pressing business challenges. She is especially skilled at helping clients make decisions and implement change in highly politicized, emotionally charged environments as they manage the multiple pressures of mission, performance, culture, competencies and competition. Her methodology brings all appropriate players into the process of generating options, making decisions, and committing to a plan so that they “own” the solution.

Don't take yourself too seriously 3. Be curious (always remain fascinated) 4. Look after YOUrself (to enable you to help others) 5. Connect (and engage with others) If you are a member, volunteer, nurse, an industry partner or a patreon of the Leg Club Foundation, you are forging a path that others will follow. Thank you for being an example of a Role Model. We hope others will be inspired by your actions, your support and your service. In this episode Craig talks with Jenny Cotie Kangas, Director of Digital Experience for Talent Acquisition at Regis Corporation - the largest hair salon chain in the world which owns brands like Supercuts, SmartStyle, Cost Cutters, First Choice Haircutters, Roosters, and many more. Jenny is a rare hybrid in the recruiting world. She describes herself like this: "My professional tool belt doesn't look like many others. It's comprised of a variety of tools, added and sharpened through years as a Project Consultant. I'm a Program Manager but by all other standards, I'm a builder. As a kid, learning came hard for me. To understand what came easy to my peers I would identify patterns and reverse engineer. This helped my “faster than normal” brain understand and learn. From an early age, I viewed the world through systems. Having this mindset resulted in me being able to move learning to mastery quickly. I became known as the girl in the project world you'd call if you didn't have a person with the necessary skill set for a role. “She's the Purple- Sparkly-Unicorn-Utility Tool and sharp as a tack,” a former Recruiter explained to a hiring manager, “She might not have the background today, but she will learn it and quick.” In October 2019 I was challenged to apply my systems brain to a new world. My insurance company had not given me enough money post water damage to finish my home. I had a couple of options - pay the extra money to finish the house or sell as-is. I went with option three and picked up an actual tool-belt. Single mom with three kids - I learned construction and personally rebuilt my house from the studs out. These days you'll find me during the week focused on building frictionless processes and systems. Outside of work, you'll find me in an actual tool-belt, finishing my house and helping others to learn the trades." Jenny and Craig discuss -designing outcomes with your audience in mind -Store-level hiring -Franchisees and how to get them to understand hiring, what's the story for that? -Failing fast and failing forward -Design bias, when you go into a situation to help but those you are helping are pre-disposed to think anyone from "corporate" isn't helpful. -Solving hard, non-linear problems -The concept of the mirror and window in hiring -How to avoid basing recruiting on what we've traditionally done -How to avoid shrinking your guardrails -How to condense user adoption from 3 days to 15 minutes -The power of a "what if?" It's always fun when Jenny and Craig get together for a chat. This is a good one.

Becky Talks Parks: Parks & Recreation Podcast for Passionate Professionals
Keri Konold joined Becky for another episode on the podcast this week to talk about public engagement in relation to conservation and recreation. It can be difficult to achieve a balance between conservation and recreation; they seem like opposing sides, and yet one in the same. Keri talks about using the SHIFT principles to reframe the conversation to make progress. They also dove into her philosophy behind public engagement and some of the ways she has found success when talking to communities, large or small. Keri is currently the Community Relations Officer at City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, in addition to being a Project Consultant for GreenPlay, LLC. “I encourage professionals to not be daunted by public engagement, but rather embrace it and leverage it to provide a better product so our communities whom we serve can go out and have the experiences that they value.” If you enjoyed this episode and are looking for more information on the topic or would like to learn how you can become a contributor or guest visit us at www.letstalkparks.com. Share This! "Breathe, because it's powerful." - Silke Glaab Key Takeaways From This Episode (provided by Silke) Keep Your Perception Fresh It is the ability to become aware of something through the senses. However, there are millions of sensual information reaching your brain every second. The actual perception is a distortion of the all the incoming data and is linked to already stored information and expectations. And we're not consciously aware of that. So, if you're checking on the same charts every day your brain compares the incoming info with already existing info and matches it. This can lead to misinterpretations of new info. How To Improve: Challenge your brain by changing your routine all over, include breaks and stay focused for at least 20 minutes. Feelings & Thoughts Work Together A thought is an idea or opinion produced by thinking(about yourself, others, trading, the world) or occurring suddenly in your mind. The quality of the thought depends on your biology, your emotional state you're in. It can be triggered by incoming information from the environment (senses) or from inside your body (feeling). Stressful or incongruent situations create chaos in your brain and as a result making it impossible to think clearly or to come up with new and creative solutions. When you change the context (emotional state) in which thoughts emerge, you can change the quality of the thought. Further, 95% of our thoughts are subconscious and they're running their programs in the background. Therefore, affirmations often do not work, because they target the conscious mind. A feeling is a conscious awareness what's going on in your body. Like with anger, your heart beat goes up, blood pressure rises, muscles tense up, your attention narrows. Often you're not aware. And you're still thinking what you're thinking and doing what you're doing and it's not your best performance. Feeling and thinking are interrelated. A negative thought results in a negative feeling and negative feeling results in a negative thought. And you're still thinking what you're thinking and doing what you're doing and it's not your best performance. Feeling and thinking are interrelated. A negative thought results in a negative feeling and negative feeling results in a negative thought. How To Improve: Uncover your limiting beliefs and change them in an instant and reprogramme your mind in minutes with Psych-K. Emotions & Awareness Emotions are energy in motion. The result of all physiological inputs creates an emotion in the brain. How To Improve: Become aware of your feelings throughout the day to navigate them throughout the day. Take control of your emotions and shift your emotion towards the flow zone of passion, focus, determination, containment, and curiosity. Move away from anger, frustration, anxiety, boredom, detachment. Methods: Breath, Label and Embrace your feelings, Bilateral stimulation... Listen: The Most Valuable Insights On Trading Psychology - Andrew Menaker Control Your Physiology Physiology is a stream of date from all physical and chemical processes in a living organism to the brain. How To Improve: Control your physiological state to get an instant grip on your emotional state towards a flow state and become crazy productive by controlling your BREATH. Dr. Alan Watkins recommends a Breath which is Rhythmic, Even, And Through your Heart. Other things are sleep, exercise, nutrition.
