Dr. Will H. Flanagan will discuss proposed nuclear safeguards for mass-produced nuclear energy and the risks involved in doing so. About the Lecture: In the nuclear era, a single weapon snuck through a border is able to significantly shift geopolitical balances. In 2007, Congress mandated the use of radiation detectors on all inbound containers but there is currently no way effectively meet this goal. Nuclear safeguards exist at all major ports of entry, though they are not always able to scan every item of cargo. Cerium Laboratories is addressing one aspect of this problem by producing a semiconductor-based “neutron intercepting system on a chip” (NISoC). Such detectors are made a modern semiconductor fabrication facilities in batches of 10,000 with a cost of a few dollars per device. This has the potential to shift nuclear safeguards in a direction where a detector can be placed on every inbound container ship. The current status of this effort will be discussed as well as future prospects. About the Speaker: Dr. Will Flanagan received his undergraduate education at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Lured from astronomy research by the fascinating connection between cosmology and particle physics, he began doing Large Hadron Collider (LHC) phenomenology at Texas A&M through a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) internship. Dr Flanagan later returned to Texas A&M for his PhD, searching for dark matter at the CMS experiment along the LHC beam line. His hitchhike through the field of particle physics has included various neutrino experiments as well as development of novel particle detectors. Dr Flanagan's current focus is developing a solid-state neutron detector with Austin-based Cerium Labs. The team recently completed a short journal publication and is actively developing future prototypes with applications from nuclear nonproliferation to hydrogen exploration. Before joining Cerium, Dr. Flanagan was an assistant professor at University of Dallas and remains an affiliate professor there with an active lab. Dr. Flanagan is also a member of the Texas Army National Guard as is currently activated to teach physics at the United States Military Academy at West Point. ***Learn more about IWP graduate programs: https://www.iwp.edu/academic-programs/ ***Make a gift to IWP: https://interland3.donorperfect.net/weblink/WebLink.aspx?name=E231090&id=18

We talk about the challenges that Guard Soldiers face, balancing their military time with civilian careers, the variety of mission sets Johnny and his men are asked to accomplish and quite a bit more. He's got a lot of great insight not just into the National Guard but also, having worked for a while in a HIMARS unit, an understanding of where the Army's field artillery is headed going in to the future. Hope you enjoy!

BenGreenfieldFitness.com/timkennedy My wife and I recently immersed ourselves in a three-day close quarter combat and firearm and personal defense training course called "Sheepdog-Response". We experienced hours upon hours of grappling, close quarter combat, situational awareness, firearm training and much more. We were feeling a bit sore and beat up at the end, but definitely more prepared for any “curveballs” life may throw at us. I think these types of skills, along with skills such as wilderness survival, plant foraging, hunting, etc. are really good ways to ensure that one is prepared for life in general. I was so impressed with the course, that I decided to get the founder of Sheepdog, Tim Kennedy, on the podcast to talk about it, and much, much more. If you haven't heard of Tim, then you definitely need to know about this guy. Tim is a retired American mixed martial artist and current soldier. A fighting professional from 2001 until 2016, he has fought in the UFC, Strikeforce, the WEC, ShoMMA, HDNet Fights, and represented the Chicago Red Bears in the IFL. Tim completed Basic Combat Training, Advanced Individual Training, Airborne School, Special Forces Assessment and Selection and the Special Forces Qualification Course. In 2007, he completed Ranger School and was assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group, where he served on an Operational Detachments Alpha. During this time he was also a sniper, sniper instructor, and the principal combatives instructor for C Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group. Kennedy deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom multiple times. In August 2009, Kennedy transitioned from active duty to the Texas Army National Guard's 19th Special Forces Group and served in the position of Special Forces Weapons Sergeant. Among Kennedy's multiple awards are the Army's Bronze Star Medal with V device, which was awarded for valor under fire. He is now an active, Ranger qualified, Green Beret, Special Forces Sniper with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as other locations around the globe. “The David Johnson Show” - The Veteran Talk Show - continues with a heartbreaking episode of loss and suicide with U.S. Army Veteran Cindy McNally and Marine Corps Veteran Andrew Farrer, both of who are currently involved with Irreverent Warriors, a non-profit organization that works to bring veterans together using humor and camaraderie to improve mental health and prevent veteran suicide. In the first half of the episode, Cindy and Andrew share details about their military background and the trials they both faced in tackling life's challenges. The second half of the program covers their work with Irreverent Warriors, and how they create meaningful connections for Veterans through Silkies Hikes. These are amazing community events for active duty men and women and veterans to get together to hike, connect, promote community and raise awareness for suicide prevention and other traumas faced by vets. Watch episode 2 of “The David Johnson Show” below or on our YouTube channel to see the amazing camaraderie that exists in the veteran community. Read more about Cindy and Andrew below the video clip. Cindy McNally bio Cindy McNally is President/CEO of Irreverent Warriors, designed for active-duty soldiers and veterans. She is also a founding member and past president of WilCo Blue Star Mothers, an organization with the mission to support other military parents. Cindy came from a military family, having seen both her uncle (Marine in Vietnam) and father (36 years in Texas Army National Guard) serve their country well. She joined the Army in 1978, straight out of high school and into Fort Jackson. Her class was only the U.S. Army's 2nd class of co-ed basic training, and “they were still trying to figure things out then” remembers Cindy in the clip. After two uneventful years as an admin clerk, she joined the Texas Army National Guard, where she received her commission and stayed on as a tack officer. She eventually met a Marine who became a fighter pilot and eventually married him. They were married 22 years, raising three children, and her husband flew for America Airlines for 21 years. Sadly, her husband had insurmountable psychological issues that resulted in him taking his own life in 2007. From this experience, she became deeply involved in helping veterans through her non-profit organizational work. Andrew Farrer bio Andrew Farrer, now active with Irreverent Warriors, joined the Marines at age 26, and served in 2005/2006 in Iraq, fighting in Al-Karmah and Ramadi. He received a Purple Heart in 2006, having received shrapnel in his foot during a patrol. In the program, Andrew shares some of the duties of working in these pivotal wars. “We did posts, we did patrols, I fired my gun a lot, I cleaned it a lot, I walked a lot, and we lost a lot of guys in that time,” remembers Andrew. Like Cindy's sad experience, Andrew also lost his father, a Lt. Commander in the Navy, to suicide while he was in boot camp.

Nicholas Moran aka The Chieftain is World of Tanks' Director, Military Relations and technical advisor, and has been so for the past nine years. In an industry where advisors are typically discarded immediately after the game releases, this is astonishing longevity--and farsightedness on the part of the developer. Nicholas is also a military historian. Following his release of a video looking at the development of Soviet tank doctrine during the interwar period, host Jason Kanigan of the Cold Star Project invited Nicholas to be on the show. Major Moran is an active officer in the Texas Army National Guard, and has been deployed to field postings. Questions for Nicholas Moran: * World of Tanks let’s begin with a quick summary of your role with WoT: what do you do and how do you go about doing it? what represents “good evidence” in tank research to you? Do you “know it when you see it” or is there a more objective standard? Are there layers of verifiability or reliability? * Soviet armor doctrine video in what places did you find the info, and how did you go about organizing it? * National Archives at College Park where is it, what’s the process of accessing it, how do you know when you’ve got something good out of a box? if you could go back to say 1930 and alter one thing (practice, numbering system?) of the Dept. of the Army / Ordnance Branch to be followed throughout the next two decades, what would it be? * Crawling around on tanks when you’re taping off squares of outer surfaces and then taking pictures of it, how does that help the game model designers? How do they translate that graphed image into a 3D model? what’s the worst case of divergence from a manual to reality (in armor thickness, or some other change) you’ve encountered? -what have been the easiest and the most difficult AFV hatch exits for you? have you considered keeping a running “banged shin” count from getting in and out of armored fighting vehicles? -Originally aired on 10/10/2015- Episode 36 of "In The Oil Patch" This week on "In The Oil Patch": host Kym Bolado and her co-hosts Alvin Bailey and Roy Holley have our esteemed guest, Brian Babin our Congressman who represents Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman Babin has graciously taken the 36th Congressional District of Texas into his hands and is fighting for our right to live in a state (and country, for that matter) that allows us to compete on the global energy market. As of October 9th, 2015, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill attempting to lift the crude oil export ban which was first voted into place back in the early 1970's, which Congressman Babin was a huge proponent for. During our interview, Congressman Babin calls for a change in the way we as Americans think and vote. He, along with a majority of his peers in the House, would love to see this export ban lifted, but with the Obama Administration already threatening to veto the bill, the chances are highly unlikely that the bill will get signed by Obama. With a new administration in sight, we can only look onward to the near future and hopefully, the eventual passing of this very important bill. From U.S. Rep.
