Tinkering or transformation? How do you change a church, like really change, not just tweak a program or update a roster, but challenge the whole model? Kodak missed the shift to digital photography. We've seen huge changes in industries impacting newspapers, landline telephones, taxis, bank branches, travel agents, street directories, encyclopedias. For each the world moved on.But have churches missed a revolution too, and if so, what is it?Archie Poulos from Moore College's Centre for Ministry Development says we've been tinkering around the edges, changing tactics without changing the operating model, especially when our structures were built for a village world while many relationships today are affinity based. What does it really mean to walk in spiritual authority—and why do so many of us confuse titles and positions for the real thing? In this episode, Christine Caine and Jessie Cruickshank get honest about the difference between worldly influence and Kingdom authority, why identity matters more than a job description, and how genuine spiritual power always comes with testing and formation. They wrestle with the tension between activity and anointing, the pitfalls of confusing influence with authority, and the practical wisdom it takes to discern God's assignment for your life. St. David is said to have performed a number of miracles, from restoring the sight of a man who was blind to the famous occasion when a hill rose up beneath him so that the crowds could hear his preaching. As part of our series marking the 900th anniversary of St. David's recognition as a saint, Roy Jenkins and guests discuss miracles today. The panel examine how we make sense of St. David's miracles in a contemporary context, whether miracles do in fact still happen, and if they do occur, why do so many earnest prayers go unanswered? Roy Jenkins is joined by four guests; Julian Richards, who founded Cornerstone church with his wife Sarah more than thirty years ago and now heads up New Wine Cymru. Joshua Brown is a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Indiana University. His own experience of miraculous healing was recently featured in an article in the New York Times. Only when a church is properly resourced with the three essentials of transformational capital can church growth happen and lives be transformed. My Unconventional Ministry guest is Dirk Scates, Vice President of Ministry Development with CDF Capital. While CDF Capital sounds might sound like an investment firm, their focus is really on discipleship and church growth! Peter Mayrick is Director of Partners in Ministry and the Centre for Ministry Development. Previously he was involved in the leadership of (a now very famous!) pharmaceutical company. Peter's passion is leadership development, and he is a great advocate for excellence in delegation. And yet, here he is on The Blunder Bus! Peter shares how he thought what he was doing was developing a coaching mindset, and a coaching culture in his organisation, only to find that his key report hadn't noticed. It's a real 'ouch' moment! At the heart of Peter's story is the issue of trust; of trusting people enough to listen to them and find out what they need to grow in their work (which may be very different from what we might think they need). If you would like to develop your ability to reflect on your work and ministry, why not have a chat with me about Pastoral Supervision? How to navigate change management in church? Change within the church is ongoing and unavoidable. This is to strengthen the church and continually make it a better and more spiritually helpful place for its members to worship God and grow in their faith. However, war stories of ‘church change resistance,' where well meaning ministers have tried to pursue these changes have sadly led to the disruption of relationships. Speaking on the topic of change and its aftermath is Raj Gupta. He is the senior minister of St Paul's in Carlingford in Sydney and a director with Moore College's Center for Ministry Development and has insights for churches based on John Kotter's Change Management Framework. In this week's episode, Chris speaks with Veteran Chaplain Adrian Dixon on his journey of becoming a spiritual leader as a Resident Chaplain at Duke Raleigh Hospital. While still in Divinity school, Adrian started working as a Staff Chaplain at Duke Raleigh Hospital providing pastoral services to patients.Through his diligent work, he slowly expanded the Chaplain program to include a new clinical pastoral program “Care For Eachother (CFE)”, a partnership with Duke University Hospital, and a team of five full-time chaplain residents and 8 to 10 interns to provide pastoral services. Adrian also shares two emotional stories that have resonated with him over his nearly 20 years with Duke. The first recounts a past patient's recovery and recognizes the gift of presence and the effect his support meant to the patient. The other talks about a dying patient's last wishes and how Adrian handled and came to terms with his final requests. Through these stories, Adrian shows how by simply being present and providing support during times of need deep connections can be created between patients, doctors, friends, families, and teammates. Furthermore, drawing from his own journey through illness at a young age, Adrian urges listeners to never lose faith and let the “seed of fear” deter them from pursuing the life and goals they want.Through diligent work and unwavering faith in God, Adrian overcame his obstacles and is destined to help his followers and patients do the same.More About Our Guest:Adrian is an experienced Chaplain Services & education department administrator with a demonstrated history of working in the hospital & health care industry. Skilled in nonprofit management, public speaking, pastoral ministry, entrepreneurial organizations, and healthcare chaplaincy, Adrian has a strong education with a Doctor of Ministry focused in Ministry Development from Virginia Theological Seminary.Adrian is the Founding/Lead Pastor of Northside Community Church. He is also the full-time Director of Chaplain Services & Education at Duke Raleigh Hospital where he has worked since 2003. Carla Leon joins the pod to talk about social - or spiritual as she likes to call it - enterprise, how she sees spiritual enterprise as a "new religion" for millenials, and why church has to re-examine what she calls the "book, box, preacher" model and make more space for the many, many different kids of spiritual practices that exist. Carla is Innovation & Special Projects co-ordinator for the EDGE - A Network for Ministry Development at the United Church of Canada where she has launched a central procurement platform, an innovation fund, the Social Innovation Challenge and most recently a coaching program to help communities of faith re-imagine who they are in community. What do you choose to rejoice in? What do you give thanks for? In the middle of a pandemic, do you thank God for your health, for your home, for your job that continues to provide for you through the restrictions? Could it be that you are focusing merely on the circumstantial—material and “desirable” lifestyle matters—rather than the theological? In this interview with Archie Poulos, Director for the Centre for Ministry Development and Head of the Ministry Department at Moore College, Chase and Archie look closer at the biblical command to rejoice. In the Book of Psalms, the command to rejoice is specifically to “rejoice in the Lord”—the Lord who is unchanging, the Lord who is faithful. The command is actually a call to faith—to continue taking God at his word and trusting that he is good, irrespective of our circumstances. But how do we Christians _do_ that? Nothing slows an individual or organization down quite like complexity. As we grow & change, things tend to get more complicated in our lives and organizations. We must avoid the drift towards complexity and fight for simplicity as leaders. Today, Heather and Ryan speak with Lisa Weaver, Outreach Administrative Assistant at WC, on her YWAM experiences.Kids often feel pressure to know what they want to do after high school. It is often the #1 question they are asked and often they have no idea what they want to do.Lisa didn't know what she wanted to do after graduation, but was invited by a friend (with whom she had gone on a short term mission trip to Nashville TN in 10th grade) to go on a mission trip to Guatemala, Ecuador, and Nicaragua which was her introduction to YWAM (Youth With A Mission). She worked in the kitchen and made a lot of guacamole! She came back, worked for her parents business, and then decided to attend YWAM DTS in Tennessee, near Nashville. The best part of YWAM is the deep, deep community she found there. You eat, sleep, take class, learn how to work through conflict with them. Lisa was there on campus for 3 months and went on outreach to Malaysia for another 2-3 months. Lisa then felt God was calling her to do a secondary school, which is through YWAM but much more specific than a DTS. Lisa did the School of Ministry Development, which is like a leadership school. The schools are incredible, with cross cultural experiences and academic classes. Some classes are accredited and you can earn college credits. You learn a lot about the Bible and also interpersonal skills. She then made a 2 year commitment to go back as staff and lead a DTS school that was soccer focused. Lisa was in YWAM for almost 10 years (part of that time she was in Germany and England, which was during the Olympics). YWAM partners with their local churches and the community. When Lisa felt that God was calling her to go to secondary school she felt it was a gut feeling. She felt that if she did something else it would be okay, but felt that this is where she needed to go that came through a time of praying, asking God, and reading and still being slightly unsure. It is almost like a theme in her life - “Not sure this is what God is saying but I am going to go with it until something else comes up or until God says no”. Stepping out and trusting, it kind of takes the pressure off of feeling you have to make all of the right decisions for your life. After doing a trip in Europe and visiting other ministries, she felt called to return home. Went on a trip to visit ministries in US and then decided she wasn't called to any of them and was called to work. Got involved in The Living Room here at WC. Got a job she loved and got married. You can have this plan for your life, but even if it doesn't end up how you thought it would go, it is still awesome.Often we don't know how much we need community until you are in a place where you have it, but then when it is gone you realize how much we need it. The "Great Steak and Shake Debate": Lisa and her friends debated (while eating at a Steak and Shake) that people are very spiritual or they are secular and there is not really an in-between. Lisa debated that spiritual life is important and the rest of life doesn't even matter. She felt they just didn't get it. And now looking back Lisa feels she is the one that didn't get it. “I thought I knew everything but it turns out I don't know anything.” Actually God is involved in every area of our life, andwe should put Him first and be passionate about what He's given us and the passions he has given us. Every Christian already has a call from God. Mathew 28: 19 “Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”Links: YWAM - @ywam_orgFacebook - Lisa Weaver Instagram - @lisahairflipweaverEmail Lisa questions about YWAM - lisaw@worshipcenter.org
Welcome friends to "What do you know?" This podcast aims to help give busy youth workers and youth pastors some encouragement and help them remember why they got into youth ministry in the first place. We also want to help encourage people who feel a call to ministry. We want to help them start to pursue what that call looks like in their life in a practical way. We also want to encourage everyone in ministry to continue to ask the question "What Do You Know?" to others; that way, we as a community can continue to learn and grow together. We are talking Kotter's principles of change managment and how they apply to church leadership in this post COVID-19 season where the immediate steps forward may not be clear. We need to lead to change. But for some of us senior pastors (as things keep changing) it's not obvious where we want to go! And yet we need to take everyone with us.As we move to restarting physical meetings post COVID19, for some churches it's relatively straightforward, for others it's going to be impossible for quite some time, but for a significant number restarting is possible - but will require a significant rearrangement. Peter Mayrick is back with us from Sydney's Center for Ministry Development at Moore Theological College. http://www.thepastorsheart.net/podcast/changepostcovid19Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/thepastorsheart)

This podcast will describe 18 attributes of each of the three stages Jesus went through as His ministry developed. You will quickly recognize how each stage is experienced in our own lives as He calls us to ministry. There's a key problem in Sydney's Anglican churches with a drop in the number of newcomers. The trend is downwards across the board. It's massively concerning. In 2013, the Diocesan mission set a goal to raise the number of newcomers to Church to 12% by 2020. However, as of September 2019, it is looking like we will fall well short of this goal. There's a new report out this week, featuring interviews with churches that are overall doing better at welcoming first time newcomers and welcoming returnees to church life. We have a vulnerable/soft underbelly conversation about our weaknesses with Peter Mayrick from Sydney's Center for Ministry Development and Jessica Brouwer, Mission Pastor at Village Church, Sydney. There are so many stories of the whole church's ministry going pear shaped by poor staffing decisions, unrealistic expectations and poor leadership. There's probably more anguish from senior and assistant ministers in this area than basically any other. And there's an unspoken unrealistic expectation within the church that their paid leadership should be able to work out this area perfectly. And the collateral damage when there are divisions in the staff team is massive. The Senior Minister of Sydney's Toongabbie Anglican Church, Raj Gupta, serves as a consultant for the Centre for Ministry Development at Moore Theological College. Raj will help us on how to recruit, engage, develop, recognise and track staff.Look back at previous episodes:Ministry Teams 'Rosters are contrary to the gospel' with Rhett Harris, 'The Leadership Pipeline' with Raj GuptaSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/thepastorsheart)
