In this post-inaugural episode of The Feds, we take the opportunity to hear from a few past guests regarding how the US Government systems can be dismantled and carefully pieced back together to ensure that the rights of all Americans are protected.  President Donald Trump has vowed to reinstate with back pay all military service members who were fired over refusing the Covid-19 shots. But what about fixing the root of the problem? Where's the accountability? How can we make sure this doesn't happen again? And what about the federal employees who faced the same discrimination and persecution? Alongside our podcast guests, Feds For Freedom is calling for common sense to return to the federal workforce in these capacities:  Senior military officials who broke the law should be called out of retirement, court-martialed, and stripped of their retirement benefits.  All US government officials who sought to coerce employees should be placed under investigation. Require all who swear an oath upholding the Constitution to receive Constitutional education. Inspectors General should be placed outside the agencies which they are assigned to investigate. Strengthen the whistleblower protections so that they actually protect the whistleblower, not the institution. Allow veterans who received vaccines as part of their military requirements and were disabled to claim vaccination as a Toxic Risk Exposure Activity to qualify for VA disability benefits.  Our podcast guests this week include Navy Commander Rob Green, Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Carolyn Rocco, Army Major Mandy Feindt, Sonny Fleeman, and Feds for Freedom President Marcus Thornton. To an unusual extent, the major media are reporting what seem to be a nearly unending series of mishaps involving U.S. commercial airline aircraft made by the Boeing company.  Whether it's a window blowing out in flight, a tire falling to the ground after takeoff, or a sudden “nosedive“ in cruising flight, it seems the Boeing jet, especially the 737, can't be trusted anymore, and the public is being conditioned to think so.   I suggest that these irregularities may not be random.  Allow me to explain. Little known to the general public and air travelers is that China has made an exact duplicate of the Boeing 737 and wants to see it in service as a replacement, worldwide (with a convenient “firefighting” tanker model as well).  This Chinese “knock-off” costs a fraction of the Boeing model and is waiting for U.S. regulatory approval.  What better way to accelerate its introduction than to engage in a classic “disinformation” program to discredit the safety of the current competitive model? Who stands to win in such a scenario?  A number of parties, political, financial, and commercial.  Airline management care about cost, and they will pursue cost reduction in any way they can. Unknown to most Americans is that airline major maintenance is largely done outside the United States, in such countries as South Korea, Singapore, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and El Salvador, with China next.  A Chinese passenger jet that costs half the price, and is financed by the Chinese, would be welcomed with open arms.  Airline executives are also ideologically captured to an unusual extent by the current White House, based in part on billions of dollars in COVID rescue funds, along with regulatory pressure to comply with White House narratives including the promotion of minorities and the adoption of racial identitarian themes in labor practices and hiring.  This also includes Biden “biosecurity“ programs involving passenger compliance and controls. All US states and territories maintain a high barrier to entry that dissuades students from entering the accounting profession—the requirement that CPAs complete 150 credit hours of academic study in addition to passing an exam. This unnecessary requirement contributes to the current shortage of accountants, delaying the completion of state and local government financial audits and thus inhibiting the public's ability to hold governments accountable.Speakers will discuss alternative paths to certification, including reforms to the 150‐hour rule and competitive accounting certification bodies. When Bob Ingersoll describes his first Grateful Dead concert, you can almost feel the pulsing energy of the crowd and the transformative power of the music. This episode takes a wild ride with Bob, a chimp expert, and Deadhead, as he shares his life's tapestry woven with threads of passion for primates and the Grateful Dead. His stories transport us from his early college days to the emotional depth of his bond with Nim Chimpsky, a chimp he worked with closely. Bob's journey is not just about his own evolution but also about the heartbreak of losing his primate friends to medical research and how it steered him towards the vibrant embrace of the Deadhead community.Imagine the thrill of chasing live concerts across the country, each show a unique snowflake in the blizzard of Grateful Dead fandom. Bob regales us with tales of close encounters with the band, the kinship formed with fellow fans, and the spontaneous drum circles that capture the essence of this cultural phenomenon. These memories underscore the shared experiences that resonate long after the final notes fade, like the story of Bob's mother donning a Dead-themed shirt years after being deeply moved by a performance, and his cousin's treasured ticket stubs that serve as portals to the past.Fusing the kindred spirits of music and activism, Bob's narrative culminates in an exploration of compassion, from his vegan awakening to his tireless efforts in animal advocacy. This episode is not just an invitation to reminisce but a call to action, encouraging listeners to embrace the legacy of the Grateful Dead in their own lives and join the ongoing quest for animal welfare and environmental justice. As we explore his stories, from the Beatles to Bob Dylan, we witness the origins of a community united by music. Bill's encounters with the Dead's intimate shows and his insights into their ever-evolving relationship with promoter Bill Graham offer a rare glimpse into the spirit of an era defined by transformative sounds and kinship. The air of a Grateful Dead concert was electric with camaraderie and the unexpected, like the time Bob Weir handed out tuna sandwiches or a compassionate security guard went above and beyond. Our episode captures those moments, the surge of energy during a "Dark Star" transition into "St. Stephen," and pays homage to the irreplaceable Pigpen. These concerts weren't just about music—they were a space where memories and lifelong bonds were forged, where each song became a collective heartbeat shared by everyone in the room.Venture with us into the crossroads of social justice and music education, where the Zinn Education Project www.zinnedproject.org meets the anti-apartheid anthem "Sun City." That's the magic Bruce Ascher, a die-hard Deadhead from Putnam County, brings to the table in our latest episode. With the backdrop of Led Zeppelin and Motown beats, Bruce's musical pilgrimage led him to the Grateful Dead's doorstep, and he's never looked back. We navigate through the band's evolving eras, from Keith and Donna to the jazzy stylings of Brent Mydland, and into the hands of cover bands that keep the flame burning brightly. Bruce's narrative includes a nod to local New York legends like Grateful Bro, painting a picture of a scene that refuses to fade away, sustained by the undying passion of fans and musicians alike. Our conversation takes a literary turn as we explore the intersection between the Grateful Dead's cultural phenomenon and the written word, with a spotlight on TC Boyle's "Drop City." We unravel how Boyle's portrayal of freedom and counterculture resonates deeply with Deadheads. Join us on a sonic journey as Tommy Kennedy takes us from the electric buzz of a Bob Dylan fandom to the psychedelic swirl of becoming a Grateful Dead convert. The episode kicks off with Tommy's rich storytelling, painting the scene of his first Grateful Dead concert where the air was thick with excitement and faces were adorned with vibrant paints. His tales extend beyond the music, revealing the tapestry of experiences that hooked him into the Dead's unique culture, and how one album, "Wake of the Flood," served as the catalyst for this transformation. We navigate through Tommy's recollections of the contrast between East and West Coast Dead shows, the ingenuity of sneaking an ice chest into venues, and the community spirit that saw him through an incredible 187 concerts. As the conversation unfurls, we find ourselves reflecting on the broader picture of music appreciation, evoking memories of a time when ticket prices were a fraction of today's costs and each venue had its own distinct atmosphere. We share laughs over a Bobby Vinton concert and wax nostalgic about the Grateful Dead's dual drummers and the shift in their performance sound. The episode culminates with a heart-to-heart about I Hike for Mental Health www.hikeformentalhealth.org, a nonprofit co-founded by Tommy after a chance encounter that married his love for hiking with a cause close to his heart. We examine how hitting the trails can be a balm for the mind and the critical importance of mental health research and trail preservation, efforts that Tommy's organization champions. A touching tribute to Brent, the "new guy" who left an everlasting imprint on the Grateful Dead, rounds out our discussion. But unbeknownst to many of them, TikTok has stored that personal financial information on servers in China that are accessible by employees there, Forbes has learned."Further, their report argued: "TikTok uses various internal tools and databases from its Beijing-based parent ByteDance to manage payments to creators who earn money through the app, including many of its biggest stars in the United States and Europe. The same tools are used to pay outside vendors and small businesses working with TikTok. But a trove of records obtained by Forbes from multiple sources across different parts of the company reveals that highly sensitive financial and personal information about those prized users and third parties has been stored in China. The discovery also raises questions about whether employees who are not authorized to access that data have been able to. It draws on internal communications, audio recordings, videos, screenshots, documents marked "Privileged and Confidential," and several people familiar with the matter."…And what has Shou said in his letter to Blackburn and Blumenthal? The point of the letter is to confirm that over the past year, TikTok has collaborated closely with Oracle to implement various measures to enhance the protection of the application, systems, and the security of data belonging to its users in the United States. They also announced that in January 2023, they had achieved a significant milestone in this endeavour – the default storage location for US user data has been changed. All US user traffic is currently being directed to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. While TikTok's data centres in the US and Singapore are still utilized for backup purposes, the company's ongoing efforts involve removing US users' private data from our data centres. Their objective is to fully transition to Oracle cloud servers in the United States, for which, as of March 2023, they have also started deleting previously stored data from foreign servers. But the controversy has arisen from the second main iteration of the letter, which reads: "TikTok has been clear that there are certain, limited exceptions to the definition of protected data. These exceptions are in place to help ensure interoperability of TikTok as a global platform and were determined as part of TikTok's extensive, multi-year negotiations with CFIUS that have occurred under two Administrations. Exceptions include categories such as public data, business metrics, interoperability data, and certain creator data, if a creator voluntarily signs up for a commercial program to be supported by TikTok in reaching new audiences and monetizing content. As part of Project Texas, we are also designing a trusted path to enable TikTok to respond to global government and litigation demands for documents relating to users."This confirms that if a content creator based out of the US has subscribed to paid content promotion programmes on the platform for the sake of 'interoperability', their data has been redirected to servers abroad… including those in China. The senators have responded in an obviously indignant manner, stating: "We are extremely concerned that TikTok is storing Americans' personal, private data within the reach of the Chinese government. TikTok executives appear to have repeatedly and intentionally misled Congress when answering how the company secures and protects the data of Americans. TikTok's response makes it crystal clear that Americans' data is still exposed to Beijing's draconian and pervasive spying regimes – despite the claims of TikTok's misleading public relations campaign."What is Project Texas?'Project Texas' is Shou Zi Chew's answer to the US Congress's security concerns. Through the Project, TikTok in the US would maintain local data servers disallowing any flow of information of American users outside the country, and Oracle will reportedly own these servers. Moreover, as part of the Project, TikTok might also reveal its algorithm to the US agencies for greater transparency. At this point, the countries of the 'Five Eyes Intelligence Alliance', namely the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK, as well as the European Parliament, have already collectively banned TikTok from being installed in government-issued/ federal service devices, to prevent sensitive official data from reaching the hands of China, or any externally based TikTok server that the US may have no jurisdiction over. Moreover, a Bill by US Senator McCaul on 'Deterring America's Technological Adversaries' Act (DATA Act) is already tabled for discussion in Congress since February this year, and it identifies TikTok and its parent company 'ByteDance' major security threats to American users' privacy. With the developments in the debate on TikTok and data governance likely to continue, the latest controversy surrounding the letter may well be the death knell that pushes the US to adopt broader legislation regulating civilian uses of the app. Cyberpolitik Explainer : The Soviet Semiconductor Failure— Revati GandekarSemiconductors are critical for technological sectors that produce electronic components such as transistors, diodes, integrated circuits, and microprocessors. These components are essential for computers, telecommunications, consumer electronics, military, and aerospace. The semiconductor industry played a pivotal role in shaping the technological landscape of the 20th century. While the United States and other Western countries experienced significant growth and innovation in this field, the Soviet Union also made notable advancements in the semiconductor industry. This aims to analyze the rise and fall of the semiconductor industry in the USSR, exploring what contributed to its initial success, the subsequent challenges, and ultimately the industry's failure. In the late 1950s, the USSR recognized the potential of semiconductor technology and sought to develop its industry. They established research institutes, such as the Moscow Institute of Electronic Technology and the Lebedev Physical Institute, which focused on semiconductor research and development. Additionally, collaborations with Eastern Bloc countries, such as East Germany, helped accelerate the industry's growth.Unlike the market-driven approach of the West industries, the USSR's semiconductor sector was primarily state-driven. The Soviet government heavily invested in research and development, providing massive funding and resources to semiconductor projects. This support allowed Soviet scientists and engineers to progress significantly in the field, albeit often in a more secretive and controlled environment. The Soviet semiconductor industry achieved several notable milestones during its heyday. In the early 1960s, Soviet scientists developed the first silicon planar transistor, a breakthrough that revolutionized transistor manufacturing worldwide. The USSR also made significant progress in integrated circuit technology, contributing to advancements in military electronics, space exploration, and industrial automation. While the USSR achieved remarkable progress in the semiconductor industry, it faced numerous challenges and limitations that eventually hindered its growth. One significant factor was the lack of open collaboration and information exchange with Western countries. The USSR's isolationist policies limited access to global semiconductor developments, impeding the industry's ability to keep pace with international advancements. This stifled innovation, as government committees with little technical expertise decided on resource allocation, technology adoption, and production targets. The lack of market-oriented incentives hindered the industry's ability to respond to changing market dynamics and meet international standards. One of the main challenges that the Soviet Union faced in developing its semiconductor industry was the initial ideological opposition to cybernetics, which was seen as a bourgeois pseudoscience that threatened the Marxist-Leninist doctrine. This attitude changed in the late 1950s and early 1960s when Nikita Khrushchev adopted a policy that encouraged computer production and scientific research. The Soviet Union realized the strategic implications of semiconductors and set up new facilities to manufacture them in cities like Leningrad and Riga. In 1958, the Soviet government set up a whole new city, Zelenograd, a technical-type Special Economic Zone, just for semiconductor manufacturing. The Soviet Union's centralized planning and bureaucratic system also posed challenges for the semiconductor industry. This top-down approach led to inefficiencies. As a result, in 1973-74, USSR produced only basic types of semiconductors (transistors and diodes), and the production was close to only 2% of the US output. However, the Soviet semiconductor industry soon encountered another problem: technological lag behind the West. Moreover, the Soviet Union could not keep up with the rapid innovation and miniaturization of Western semiconductors, especially after the invention of the integrated circuit in 1959. It also suffered from a shortage of skilled personnel, quality control, and market incentives. To overcome these difficulties, it resorted to copying Western designs and importing Western machinery and components. For example, the KR580VM80A was a clone of the Intel 8080 CPU, and Soviet scientists also replicated the Texas Instruments SN-51, as these processors were able to execute several thousand instructions per second. The USSR also tried to obtain specialized production equipment and complete production processes from the Free World, sometimes indirectly from the US. However, this increased dependence on foreign sources violated international trade regulations and prevented original innovation. The country faced a scarcity of raw materials, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of market-oriented incentives. Additionally, this contributed to poor quality control and an inability to compete with Western semiconductor manufacturers. The global interests of major semiconductor-producing countries, particularly the United States and its allies, also influenced the USSR's failure in the industry. The Cold War rivalry intensified the competition between the Soviet Union and the West. The US and its allies pursued technological advancements in semiconductors to gain a competitive edge in various industries, including telecommunications, computers, and consumer electronics. With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the semiconductor industry in the USSR experienced a rapid decline. It marked the end of its semiconductor industry as a coherent entity. Most of the Soviet computer manufacturers ceased operations or switched to other products. A few companies that survived into the 1990s used foreign components and have yet to achieve significant production volumes. The economic turmoil, political instability, and transition to a market-based economy further eroded the industry. The dismantling of the planned economy also led to a brain drain, as skilled professionals looked for opportunities in the private sector or emigrated to other countries. The Soviet Union had some achievements in this field, such as creating the first electronic computer in continental Europe (MESM) and developing some local semiconductor facilities. However, it faced many challenges, including ideological opposition, technological lag, foreign dependence, and internal disorganization. The dissolution of the Soviet Union resulted in the fragmentation and decline of its semiconductor industry. In conclusion, complete government intervention in the semiconductor industry in USSR had adverse effects on isolating innovation and lagging behind foreign rivals. The government controlled and centralized the semiconductor industry but failed to foster innovation and competitiveness. The government intervention isolated it as it lagged behind the US and its allies in terms of technology, production, and market share. While the USSR made significant strides in semiconductor research and development, the industry's ultimate decline can be attributed to factors such as limited international collaboration, centralized planning, economic challenges, and the collapse of the Soviet Union itself. Despite its eventual demise, the legacy of the Soviet semiconductor industry serves as a reminder of the importance of collaboration, innovation, and market-oriented policies.Matsyanyaaya 2: The Fission Factor in India-US Ties— Saurabh TodiLast month Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh revealed that Indian scientists are working on developing small modular reactors, or SMRs, one of the most promising emerging technologies in nuclear power. The interest in new technology and India's ambitious plan to build 10 new reactors in a decade is evidence of an enduring commitment to nuclear energy. Recently, the India-US Joint Statement following PM Modi's State Visit also affirmed nuclear energy as a necessary resource to meet our nations' climate, energy transition, and energy security needs. Both leaders also noted the ongoing discussion on developing next-generation small modular reactor technologies in a collaborative mode for the domestic market as well as for export. The nuclear industry is undergoing a renaissance. Over 50 nuclear reactors are under construction globally today. Even countries like South Korea and Japan, which were planning to phase out nuclear power, have reconsidered or scaled back their decisions. The European Union's inclusion of nuclear power as a sustainable investment has further enhanced its appeal. Technological advancements led by start-ups and established companies have further improved the long-term outlook for nuclear power. Innovations such as SMRs, pebble-bed reactors, and molten-salt reactors aim to enhance the safety, flexibility in size, and economic viability of nuclear plants. China also recently issued an operational permit for its first experimental thorium-based reactor. This sector is ripe for further and intensified cooperation between India-US and other close partners such as Japan and Australia.Matsyanyaaya 3: High-Tech Takes Centre-Stage— Pranay KotasthaneI don't think any serious policy analyst—even five years ago—would have anticipated that the press briefing of an Indian PM's Official State Visit to the US would headline concrete actions on high-tech areas such as semiconductors, critical minerals, telecommunications, Space, Quantum Computing, and Artificial Intelligence.Nevertheless, here we are. Technology is now the centrepiece of the India-US partnership. This technology framework includes strategic technologies, such as jet engine manufacturing in India and space, and also commercial technologies, such as telecommunications, optical fibres, and semiconductors. How Does it Matter?Technology occupying the pole position in India-US relations is a big change in the foreign policy outlooks on technology partnerships. Here's why.Phase 1.0After its independence, India interacted with many countries in the West to access advanced industrial technologies. The US specifically assisted India's nuclear and space programmes, helped develop IIT Kanpur, and contributed to the Green Revolution.Phase 2.0But technology became a sore point as the Cold War picked up pace. India faced stringent denial of technology from international regimes in the nuclear and space sectors. The denial of Indian membership into multilateral export control regimes such as the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) and the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) cast a long shadow on India's foreign policy outlook. The US came to be seen as a technology denier. India's default stance over the next five decades was to protect its turf in global technological fora while simultaneously developing and shielding domestic capabilities. This is why the civil nuclear deal in 2005 was such a big deal. It helped India and the US move on from a low-level equilibrium. However, technology still remained a marginal area of cooperation at a time when terrorism and American support for Pakistan gated progress in other sectors.Phase 3.0The Modi-Biden Summit is a firm indication that India's foreign policy outlook on technology has changed. Contributing factors are a growing domestic technological base; an increased presence of Indian talent in the global technology ecosystem; emergent geopolitical realities concerning China; and the rising contribution of crosscutting technologies in national power. The Indian foreign policy establishment now has a far more positive view of technology and the opportunities it offers for collaboration and competition, apart from contestation. India also realises that technology is now a global enterprise where autarchy is not an option. The contemporary concern is to manage interdependence and make technological supply chains trusted, transparent and resilient. More recently, India's advances in large-scale digital public infrastructure—payments, identity and data-sharing—give it the confidence to use technology to deepen diplomatic ties.As for the US, technology has become a primary driver for addressing the China challenge. Nuclear weapons make large-scale conventional conflict unlikely. Similarly, China's disproportionate role in material supply chains makes any large-scale economic decoupling costly. Consequently, contestation has been in the high-technology domain.Apart from the denial of technology to China, it has also meant that the US has changed the foreign policy use of technology towards its partners. Cooperation on nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS arrangement showed that the US was now willing to share sensitive technologies with partners to counter China. Back then, in the context of India's dependence on Russia for defence systems, I wrote:It is thus in the West's interest to apply this new technology alliance mindset to India. As more options become available, India will find it easier to reduce its dependence on Russia. It seems this has come true to an extent. The US has been more forthcoming in sharing technology than opening its markets. The FTA with India remains a non-starter, but technology collaboration has grown rapidly. What does it Imply?High-tech cooperation is also not as high-stakes as the more contentious areas like trade and the South China Sea. The India-US relationship is so far behind the production possibility frontier on technology, trade and defence that there are enough low-hanging fruits to pick. And that's exactly what we are seeing now.In edition #165, I proposed a tri-axis framework to look at the India-US relationship: state-to-state relations, state-to-people relations, and people-to-people relations. There has never been a problem on the people-to-people axis. As the State Visit shows, state-to-state relations have also turned a corner. However, it is the state-to-people axis that is the problematic axis. Many Indians still seem to harbour a deep frustration with the American State. On the other hand, many Americans also have doubts about India as a partner of strategic importance.Only the two administrations could do something to break this ceiling. By delivering on the asymmetric promises under the technology and defence agreements, the state-to-people axis will finally move on from recollections of the technology denial regime. The announcements are just the beginning; a lot depends on the execution from both sides in these areas.Note: this piece was earlier published on Anticipating the Unintended #216. Matt Johnson (00:08): Hey Nick Clason (00:11): Well, good morning. And hello everybody. Welcome to another episode of the hybrid ministry podcast. I am your host, Nick Clason alongside my great friend cohort. Compadre, Matt Johnson. How you doing this morning, Matt? Matt Johnson (00:27): Doing great, man. I'm a little tired, you know, have a newborn in another room. So that's been, uh, exciting, but you know, I'm, uh, worn out but you know, it's beautiful and it's a great thing. So Nick Clason (00:40): You're worn out. So let's talk about digital ministry to just reinvigorate you. Matt Johnson (00:47): I'm in Nick Clason (00:48): Let's, uh, real quick, like what are like the, like, what's the number one, most surprising thing about a newborn for you? Matt Johnson (00:56): Oh man. You know, the most surprising thing is how fulfilled I am. Um, you know, I, the second I've met her, I cried and you know, there's been multiple times I've been holding her and I just start crying. I'm like, this is really weird. Never thought fatherhood would hit me this way. And I think it just goes, you know, I lost my dad a few years ago. So like just layers of like who I am to this little thing that I'm holding, you know, that doesn't even have any idea what's going on in the world. Nick Clason (01:23): yeah. Yeah. That's that's awesome, man. Well, we're super happy for you, but obviously everybody wanted you back because, uh, you know, they missed, they, they missed you. Laughs. And they had just listened to me and that was boring so well, yeah. That's amazing, dude. So super happy for you. Um, today, uh, you know, Barna recently came out with a, an ebook, um, on the, I don't remember the exact title of it, but we'll link it in the show notes, but the findings in this new world of hybrid ministry and I dude, I promise you, right. We had this name before we knew about their ebook. Matt Johnson (02:06): So yes, Nick Clason (02:07): , we're technically not stealing from them, but they did release before us because, uh, we didn't have our crap together enough to get this thing up and off the ground. Matt Johnson (02:16): Nick Clason (02:17): So , so it looks like we're stealing from them, but we promise we're not. So I was reading through that, uh, just the other day and there were just some statistics that kinda, um, I found interesting and I just wanted to share them and then us just kind of go back and forth and talk through 'em a little bit. So, um, you know, you and I were obviously promoting this idea of digital and physical ministry calling it hybrid. Uh, and so there are a couple of things that I found interesting that feel like maybe they're not, um, leaning towards hybrid or digital ministry being a good strategy. The first one is this 51% of all us adults did not watch an online church service during COVID. Um, and 18% of practicing Christians did not. So COVID hit a practicing Christian, almost 20% of them never even tuned into an online service. So those statistics right there, Matt, is there anything concerning with that? Like as you and I are like pushing for this idea of hybrid ministry, are, are we like, well, yeah, but people don't even really want it. That's, that's kind of how I would read that statistic. Matt Johnson (03:31): Yeah. I, uh, personally I'm not concerned mostly just cuz of the demographic and the ages that this did. I mean, it's not just, you know, millennials that they're pulling out in this stat, it's all adults. So you're gonna have boomers, gen X all in there too. And we know historically that they don't want to really tune in online. Um, I will say, I mean, if only 20, if 20% of practicing Christians did not tune in, I mean that means 80% did tune in at some point, which I mean that excites me. Um, cuz that means majority of people are trying to tune in. Um, and I also do, uh, if all us adults and 51% did not attend a church service of like everyone in the us, I, I mean might be the optimist I me, but that, that tells me 49% of people at least, you know, checked out a service at some point. So that's exciting. Uh, yeah. Which, you know, that's kind of correlates with the numbers that we have seen and you know, practicing religion anyway. So, um, I Nick Clason (04:31): Mean you can paint them as negative. Right. But there's also the other side too, which is there, there is positivity in it such depends, I guess how you wanna look at it. Matt Johnson (04:40): Yeah. And I would just say like, don't get discouraged just cuz 20, you know, about 20% of practicing Christians did not because I would say, you know, that's probably the 20% of people that regardless never will. Nick Clason (04:52): Yeah. Well and one of the, I mean, gosh, one of the things we've noticed in our church is that, um, COVID hit and we lost contact with just a lot of people. And so mm-hmm, , that's probably a nationwide phenomenon as well. Um, especially depending on the size of church, you know, you and I obviously work at a pretty large church and so it's, it's harder for us to have contact with every single one, uh, of the people, you know, that, Matt Johnson (05:16): That least, yeah. Something else that I would ask, seeing the number start to cut you off. Nick is no, Nick Clason (05:21): You're good. Matt Johnson (05:22): Um, how were, were these churches that these 20%, 18% did not get practice online? Is that because they weren't communicated well to, um, were the, were things not implemented quick enough for them? So, you know, they were like, you know, they get out their habit habit of I'm gonna go attend church, which I think that could definitely be part of that factor too. I mean, I think in my grandpa's church who, you know, runs a small Methodist church of 20 people and they try to do online and it was him in his kitchen, but you know, his congregation is primarily 60 to 80 years old, so they're not gonna really go on Facebook to watch. Nick Clason (05:58): So yeah. I also think that, um, what you and I are proposing and talking about in the life of this podcast is not an online church service. No like that it be an element to it and it could be an element to it. But I think we're trying to actually create a more dynamic and robust, um, framework for hybrid ministry. Exactly. Because I do exactly that people do like the, the X factor of the church is the fact that we gather together and we create real authentic community. Like, yeah, that's what sets us apart. We're not just a content machine. And so the con the converse of that is that if the church is just a content machine, like if we're not doing it well, or, um, like if we feel like we should have to compete with the world, we may lose out on that, unless we have something that's uniquely different and we do, and that's Jesus and that's community, but so how do we take those things that uniquely set us apart as the church and create something hybrid in that? Nick Clason (07:08): And so while some of these stats may look, you know, cryptic or whatever, for what we're proposing, I would argue that we're saying, yeah, stream your service, but also, like don't only stream your service and call that your digital presence. There's so much more to a digital presence, just go back and exactly all the things we've, we've talked about in the week, the episodes before, so, okay. Yeah. So then, uh, 67%, um, of church adults now have an online option and when their church didn't have one before. So if anything, what we've seen now is that COVID has ushered the church, you know, into this new, this new phenomenon. I think in my dad's church, not the one he's at now, but the one that he was at when COVID was going on. And, uh, they, they did have a live stream, but dude, like I think that their live stream was someone setting their iPhone up in the balcony. Nick Clason (08:06): And like, that was how they live stream, you know, and they're not super produced even now, but they did, like, they did grab a couple of, you know, elements to, to boost their live stream. And so they now do like lower thirds instead of just like just putting the phone up and hoping that people can see the screen and, um, like stuff like that, you know, to make themselves a little bit more, uh, online savvy. And so I think a lot of churches went through some sort of online iteration. And so now that you have the hardware and the software, and maybe even some of the soft skills, like the know how and how to set this thing up, it now gives the ma you know, the overwhelming majority of churched adults, an online option that they didn't have before. And so yes, stream your service, but also what are different ways, Matt, that you could even see them packaging that, um, that content, that audio, that video to create hybrid, you know, elements throughout their week. Matt Johnson (09:08): Yeah. I mean, there's a lot of different ways you could, um, package it, but what are the best ways right now I'd say is to just get some of that short form content out of that live message. Um, we've talked a lot about that, especially if you're trying to hit the millennial gen Z. Um, there actually was just another study that came out that said the best way to reach that. Um, millennials in general is video that's under 60 seconds long. So, um, if you could figure out a good way to like package, I don't know, 62nd clip with a, um, let's say a 200 word blog or 200 word write up about it. And you could package that as a, Hey, our weekly recap or whatever. Oh yeah. I don't know if you watch baseball at all. Um, but, uh, one of my favorite things about baseball right now is like, if you tune into a game late, especially on specifically on YouTube TV, it gives you a six inning recap of, or like whatever inning you're coming in of all the plays you've missed, which I, uh, that's something I personally love, cuz I can catch up on my baseball games really quickly. Matt Johnson (10:09): But so do that for your sermon. Like do a, Hey here's our sermon recap for the week you give it in content short form. Um, and let me know what's going on with, uh, whatever you got going on in, at your church that week. Uh, that's the probably gonna be the best way to reach millennial and gen Z right now. Nick Clason (10:27): And do you think Matt that like obviously, well, first of all, baseball's boring. If you can catch up on a game in 60 seconds, that's my take on it, but uh, would you suggest that the best way to do that would be through, um, like maybe TikTok or Instagram, but are you saying like throw that on like a mobile friendly, um, website or like a page on your website? That's like maybe a blog page that's dynamic, that's moving, that's being updated. Um, and then that, is that the way to do it, send it out via email, like what would be your distribution? Like that's a great concept. I love that. I don't even know if there's churches really doing that in the iteration that you're explaining, but how would you, uh, suggest a church if you know, we hired you as our marketing manager, how would you suggest a church set that up technically on the backside? Does that make sense? Matt Johnson (11:16): Yeah. No, all of the above are great options. Um, the big thing, so here, well, let's go through all the avenues. So Instagram TikTok, you're gonna have broader reach. So if that's what you're trying to get, go for that email, you're gonna have your best reach. So, uh, Seth goin always talks about how your email list is like your gold. Um, if you get really good people on your email list and they're engaged, like that's your cream of your crop, they're gonna be hot no matter what. So, um, that's a great way to distribute, distribute it, but we also know it can be a challenge to get emails. So, um, if that's not, you know, uh, something that you have built, you don't have a CRM or anything built on the back end or a data management system. I would, okay. Let's all right. What's next website, which this could easily be a pillar page or a cluster topic of like, Hey, you're serving recaps and all that SEO is gonna drive your website. The video content is gonna weigh higher on Google and you can just continue adding stuff to that page of like here's our sermon recap page. And that page will just be built out more and more. And if you can just imagine this page, that scrolls forever, and you have a nice little table of content at the top that you can like jump around and stuff. That's gonna weigh very high on SEO. So, um, so which we are actually seeing currently with Google, Nick Clason (12:36): So let's get super nerdy on a pillar page. So I know what that is. Cuz you told me what it is, but I didn't know what it was till you told me what it was a couple of months ago. So first of all, what is a pillar page? Matt Johnson (12:47): So a pillar page is just a fancy term of like, okay, you've pick a topic. So let's, let's uh, let's talk about small groups. Small groups is always a great, uh, no let's do youth ministry since you're a youth leader. You knows. There we go. Let's now we're talking the finals, let's go into the world that we know. Yeah. so let's say we created a pillar page. That was everything you need to know about, uh, youth ministry in 2022. Um, so we titled that page specifically to be some of those search terms that you're gonna have. And then that pillar page should just be built out of like the who, what, when, where, why, how so, but blogs, curated content. And when I talk about curated content, I think that confuses a lot of people cuz they think, oh, we're just gonna, um, take content that we have or whatever, and just re put it on there. Matt Johnson (13:31): You can do that. But when I'm seeing curated content, I'm talking about other people's content and doing back links for them too. Mm-hmm um, that helps you weigh higher on SEO. Um, and also on this page should be, uh, you know, copy about like, okay, this is everything you need to know about youth ministry. And then on there you could have your video tutorials, you could have, um, white pages ebook. So it's everything that you're gonna release about a topic on one page. So the Google term of it is a content cluster, which it's like a cluster of all the content you have. The pillar page is what the marketing term is that you're gonna hear a lot for it. Um, so if you created, uh, let's say life, church recap page, and on that recap page, it's just everything that life church has done, you know, over the last year. And it's a recap of all their sermons. It's a play by play or whatever. You're gonna weigh higher on SEO when people are searching for like, okay, I'm looking for, how do I deal with anxiety? And if you had a sermon about anxiety, that's gonna weigh higher on that page for you. Nick Clason (14:40): That's great, man. So here's my question then as someone who's a novice, as it comes to like internet, uh, website development and all that stuff, obviously if I pay for developer, I'm gonna gonna get this done. Right. But let's pretend I don't have the money to do that. Or I might just, you know, waiting into this now for the very first time, uh, how, like, can you set up a pillar page? Like, is there like a pillar page for dummies? Is there like a couple of things that they can do through like a basic square space, Wix or WordPress site that will get them at least on the right path? Cuz maybe, you know, someone's listening to this and they're not the senior leader. They don't have the authorization to spend the money, but they believe in it. And so they want to take it on as a pet project, but they need to prove to their upper level leadership or their senior pastor that this is valuable. Can you give someone in that boat, any sort of like tips on how to get some of that stuff up and rolling? Matt Johnson (15:31): Yeah, definitely. You can a hundred percent create a pillar page through, you know, WICS or Squarespace or something. Um, you're just gonna be limited by, uh, the fact that you're in a template, which is okay. So I want to be very clear about that. Like that is okay. Um, it's just gonna be laid out how Squarespace really wants it laid out or Wix wants it laid out. Um, Nick Clason (15:50): As opposed to the custom, like I want it, I want this feature, like you can't ne maybe necessarily accommodate that. You're just stuck in the template. Matt Johnson (15:59): Yeah, exactly. So if you're like, Hey, I don't like how this jumps to there. You're not gonna really be able to finesse around that, but that's okay if you're just getting started through pillar page, cuz really a pillar page is meant to just be a really long content cluster. So just start adding everything you have on there and just lay it out in a logical sense. So don't uh, just throw stuff willy-nilly on it. Like don't go from like what this is about to, this is how you do it then to the why, like you need to start with like, you know, why and the what, and then go to the how, like, just like a story you don't just go straight to the climax of it Nick Clason (16:38): And, and let, let's throw like a couple pillar page examples, you know, in the show notes so that people can go check those out. Yeah, Matt Johnson (16:44): Absolutely. Nick Clason (16:45): See some of them what we're talking about. Yeah. But can you think of off top of your head or do we need to stop recording and then you, you comb your brain for some good pillar page Matt Johnson (16:54): Exams? No, there's a, there's a great pillar page that Typeform has, um, that I would love to, uh, that we can add into, um, the show notes and really the pillar page is all about uh, um, gosh, I can't remember. Give one second think Nick Clason (17:14): this is, uh, Matt Johnson (17:15): Brand awareness that thought it's about yeah, it's it's about brand awareness. Um, they did a whole pillar page about how you can build brand awareness, uh, Typeform data. And that's just been, uh, perfectly laid out. Actually I will even put it in our notes here. So you have it, love it. Um, and you can take a look at it, but this is really what Hillary pages should look like gives you how much, uh, time it would read. Uh, there's usually a table of content at the top and then you can jump through and find what you wanna read about. So, um, Nick Clason (17:49): I will link to that. You guys can see it. Yeah. Matt Johnson (17:51): Pick it out. And it's a perfect example of a pillar page and I need, I wanna reiterate pillar pages are big. So this pillar page is a 44 minute read and it's meant to build SEO. Like that's what it's meant for. So when I, uh, we were building a pillar page at a church now and you guys came to me about it and I was talking through with like the kids director and stuff. I was like, I need, let's Nick Clason (18:10): Be clear. You came up with the idea first. And then I said, we should do this and Matt Johnson (18:15): Then got Nick Clason (18:15): The kids director on board. Matt Johnson (18:17): So yes. Yeah. And I was sitting down with her and she's like, is that enough content? I was like, no, I need about 30,000 words. and I could see her go what? And I was like, okay, maybe not 30,000, but I need about 3000 words. Like I would need a lot of con copy for a pillar page to work. So it's something you constantly build. It's not just something that day one, you have 200 words and it's a blog post. Like a pillar page is not bigger than a blog post. Nick Clason (18:42): Does it take on like, like, okay, cuz I guess the way I'm looking at it, let's pretend it's like Instagram. So Instagram, if you're scrolling, it'll keep loading be beneath you and it'll just scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll until like, never like you can probably never really find the bottom of Instagram. Yep. However, like Google, right? Like it's, it's got a billion options, but at when you get to the bottom of your page, it'll be like go to page two. Yeah. Can it go either of those directions or is there one way that is better than the other Matt Johnson (19:14): Scroll scroll? Does that make sense? Scroll. Yeah, I would do scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll. Okay. And then if you wanna link to other stuff outside of it, that's totally fine. So like, Hey, go check out this blog. That's fine. And what that gives you is back links and you want back links and we back links. You have the higher websites weighted. It's all this weird stuff on the back. End of Google. Nick Clason (19:34): Yeah. Okay. Great. Love it. No, that's listen, dude. That's the type of stuff that I'm in idiot about, but uh, I know it's good. So I'm trying to learn. Matt Johnson (19:41): Yeah, no I'm here. Nick Clason (19:43): So yeah, pillar pages. Um, we took a little detour there, but that's, we're gonna, that's what this is episode is about. Like how do you build it? What are they, how are they advantageous? And so we can do with our 67% church adults who now have an online option, we can take some of that and use that to add to the pillar page mm-hmm . And so could you make it where it's like one week it's, uh, 62nd sermon recap with like the downloadable notes or something. And instead of them being downloadable, you're saying just type all those words into there, Matt Johnson (20:13): So that a hundred percent Nick Clason (20:14): It can be found. And then could you add to it next week, week two of the love sermon series and the 62nd recap clip and uh, the sermon notes or something like that. Matt Johnson (20:24): Exactly. Yeah. And you would be shocked on, I, I guarantee if someone, you little churches go out there and do that, you'll be weighed high on Google. Um, like do a, how to love, how to be loving as a Christian series. Um, cuz most places are not doing this most churches aren't doing this. And then secondly, uh, if they have done this it's so long ago that like, like you'll start to outweigh Google cuz you were creating new content for it. Nick Clason (20:51): So, uh, would you recommend like someone typing up a sermon recap or would you recommend just copy and pasting the pastor's manuscript notes? Matt Johnson (21:01): Uh, both. So the best solution would be to do a recap, but if you don't have time to do a recap, then just do the sermon notes right now. Like okay. Do the recap as like that's all right. I'm gonna make this better than do the recap. Nick Clason (21:16): Gotcha. Great. All right. So a couple other of stats I wanted to look into from the barn of study, 90% of people primarily engaged with the same church that they were committed to before. COVID and I think that that's a really, uh, hopefully a really helpful stat for us as pastors, because we feel like maybe this idea of all of us going online is they're gonna find something better and then they're gonna switch. Yeah. And they're not gonna wanna go to our church anymore. And our church isn't as good as elevation. They have verdict and they have band that makes music that's on Spotify. But 90% of, of churchgoers, primarily engaged with the same church, which communicates to me that most Christians are comm or are connected or committed right to their local body. They're not, they're not looking for something else. They, they have what they want. They have the community that they're, they're looking for. And so as a church, you putting your content out there, you may be, you know, so I've heard people say like, I don't wanna steal other people from other churches. Like that's that's that wouldn't be the goal. Right? The goal is to help nurture and disciple the people that are already going to your church. Matt Johnson (22:30): Exactly. Your online church should not be like, oh, I'm gonna steal someone. Else's congregation like this isn't some nefarious thing we're doing. It should be, Hey, we're here to nurture our 90% of people that are still engaged with our church, which that tells me, like you were just saying, they bought into your community that you built there. So yeah. Nurture them. give them stuff that makes them keep wanting to come back period. Nick Clason (22:57): Yeah. Well, not even keep wanting to come back, but like learn during the week. Matt Johnson (23:01): Exactly. Yeah. That's what I mean by that. Nick Clason (23:04): Yeah. Yeah. Not just, not just come to our church on Sunday. Yeah. Nick Clason (23:08): Uh, 78% of church dropouts are saying that they're waiting until services go back to normal before they return. I think that would be a lot of pastor's arguments of, well, see, see, we gotta go back to in person, we gotta go back to in person. And I don't, I don't think any of us are arguing that we shouldn't be back in person. Yeah. Uh, but I that's, I, I would be curious about that percentage of that stat. Hum. Those people are using that as an excuse as their church, uh, attendance patterns and disciplines have just completely faded away. Um, and they're just saying, oh yeah, I'm just waiting for it to go back to normal. Realizing that COVID has never really ended being normal. Like we're just still in this weird like world with it. And there is, I don't know if normal will ever come back the way it was. Cuz it's been two and a half freaking years. Matt Johnson (23:56): yeah, no, this is the new normal. And I would just like you were saying, I, my guess is that's probably us excuse for most people now. Um, mm-hmm they got out of the habit, which you know, we've we saw that in our own numbers and that's okay. Like go find the next seeds to sell. Nick Clason (24:13): Yeah, yeah, yeah. For sure. And again, we're not proposing like, well yeah, you should stream your service. Like if you can, you should. But we're also saying that there's this there's more to just hybrid. It's not just take your Sunday morning experience and post it on Facebook live. Yeah. There we're, we're trying to make this much more dynamic than Matt Johnson (24:33): That. Exactly. Nick Clason (24:35): All right. A couple other quick, quick hitters here. Um, but one thing I found really interesting was 36% of church adults, um, that were at home and people with kids under the age of 18, which is like 41% say that they struggle to focus during online church. And again, I think that's another potentially like negative stat towards, towards digital. So what would you say if someone's like? Yeah, I mean I, online church is great and all, but like I got young kids, like I, I can't, it's hard to pay attention the whole time or it's hard to keep them, you know, from being too rowdy or whatever during church. Matt Johnson (25:11): Yeah. No, the data tells us that if you're just streaming your exact service online, you're gonna have Nick Clason (25:18): It's an hour and 15 minute Matt Johnson (25:20): Service. Yeah. You're gonna have more drop off. Um, just cuz that attention span on an hour and 15 minutes on anything screen related, that's not an action movie drops off. So, um, yeah, if they, they probably will just tune into the sermon and that's okay. Or some just tune into the worship. That's my mom, she loves the worship and then she likes listening to the sermon, um, when she's driving to work the next day, which is, yeah, that's an okay option too, but you're giving them the avenue. So I get that. You're gonna struggle to focus during online. Um, that's gonna happen, especially if you have kids, uh, as you know, and I'm learning so Nick Clason (25:58): Well, I'll tell you what, what we would do during COVID is we would watch like older people church upstairs, and then we would send our kids to the basement to watch, uh, like their kid service. Well, their kid service was over in like 12 minutes Matt Johnson (26:13): Nick Clason (26:14): And so they come up at the end of worship. Yeah. And we're like, well, well, Hey, like go, Hey, let's watch, let's watch last week's again. And we, it was really hard, man. It was really hard. So it was hard to, it was hard to simulate church. Yep. Um, because it wasn't, I don't think it's meant to be that per se. No it's. And so I would, I would, as a, as a dad of kids under the age of five, I would agree with that stat wholeheartedly. Yep. Honestly, Easter 20, 20 Amanda and I watched church at like 10:30 PM when the kids are in bed. Matt Johnson (26:49): Yeah. Nick Clason (26:49): Like, because we are like, that's when we can in this, when we're unencumbered by them. Yeah. You know, Matt Johnson (26:54): So, and I think what we're landing on is like, it's okay to have these different avenues to consume the media. And also if you're like, Hey, I wanna, I wanna make our church service more, uh, more engaging for these people. Like then go solve that problem. Like go more power to you. Yeah, Nick Clason (27:15): Yeah, yeah, exactly. But to just overlay what you're doing in person on top of online, like that's, I don't know. I mean, dare I say it's a little lazy. Yeah. Like, and, and if you don't have the manpower for it, I get it. So we're not proposing that you reinvent the wheel, like crossroads in Cincinnati has a completely like custom hybrid online experience. Yep. And that's amazing. Right. I'll link I'll link theirs in the show notes too. I got somebody thinks to link in the show notes, but um, like the like yeah. So that's amazing, but they have the main power to do it. And you're probably again sitting here thinking like I barely have the main power to like do all the things I need to do. Um, and so we're not proposing that we're saying think, think about this as a side of the box, offer church streaming adjacent options. Not just only church streaming options. Exactly. Nick Clason (28:06): So, yeah. All right. A couple other real quick things. Um, this was interesting to me, I'll throw all these stats and stuff in the show notes, but so do you use the internet for faith purposes? So I'm just gonna read 'em and we'll kind of digest it. Practicing Christians set 66% of practicing. Christians said that they use the internet for faith purposes. 56% of church adults said that they use the internet for faith purposes. 36% of dropouts say that they use the internet for faith purposes, church, gen Z 67%, church millennials, 64% church, gen X, 58% church boomers, 42%. So I think a couple things that are interesting, obviously when you start with gen Z, it's the highest and it drops down as it gets to boomers. But one thing I notice is that even the gen Xers and the boomers still say almost 50% say that they use the internet for faith purposes. Mm-hmm . So if the argument is my church is old and this isn't for them, I, that categorically is untrue. Matt Johnson (29:08): Yep. Yeah, no, absolutely. And the only way to get younger is if you do it, so stats. I mean, that's what the stats are saying too. So if you're like, Hey, we wanna get younger, but we don't wanna, you know, kill our older, uh, congregation. Like they're gonna, they're all gonna be okay with it. Nick Clason (29:29): Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. And yeah, a, a church boomer will read a recap email. Like they, they respond email. My grandma reads email. In fact, my grandma couldn't connect to the internet the other day and was convinced that someone was trying to hack her bank account. And so I had to, I had to turn her wifi off and turn it back on and get her connected. And she thought that I am the number one, it director in the world. Matt Johnson (29:55): my grandpa, my grandpa, all the D coffee. TV's not working. Can you fix me? Like, did you unplug it? You're genius. Nick Clason (30:07): Yeah, but they'll read it. They'll read the emails, man. She, and dude, I was at my grandma's and she's like, can you help me unsubscribe from some emails? And I'm like, sure. So I'm like getting her set up with an UNS subscription service. And I was like, how about JC Penn? She's like, no, I like that one. . How about, how about your green bay Packers newsletter. Now I need to know what's going on. Withs green bay. Packer's newsletter. . How about this now? I, I need that gram. You don't actually wanna be in subscribe Matt Johnson (30:30): For anything Nope. Oh, that's fine. Nick Clason (30:34): All right. A couple another one that was interesting after C will church gatherings fit your life church, gen Z 37% said that both digital and physical would fit their lifestyle. 13% say that primary digital would fit their lifestyle. And 41% say physical will fit their lifestyle. So this is church gen Z. So I think one thing that stood out to me about this statistic, cuz that only 13% said that primarily primarily digital would be, uh, their preference for, uh, attending church post COVID mm-hmm . And so right. We continue to say gen Z, gen Z. And we, we are kind of pegging a lot of this on them and them as the future, but they still want in person, they're not looking for only digital. Exactly. We're looking for hybrid, which is what we're trying to find that, that sticky in between, between the two things. Nick Clason (31:29): Exactly. So, and same with millennials. Millennials are, uh, I think slightly higher, uh, 40% say that both online in person, 13% say primarily digital, which is the same as gen Z and then 42% say primarily physical. So they're right on the same track there as, as gen Zers. But they're saying that, um, basically the both that's hybrid man. Yep. Like that's what we're trying to say. Yep. They wanna come in person, but they also want to have access to it when they can't make it or for whatever reason, they're not able to be at church. They want to consume something online. Yep. So, so that's, that's it any other like kind of lasting thoughts that you had just through some of these statistics, like we'll, we'll link to the Barna, uh, ebook and so you can grab a copy of it yourself, but there are, uh, there's just a, there's a lot of really good and really interesting stuff in there. So any other thing that you are like, did you miss this? You should have highlighted this or just, or parting thoughts based on some of this data? Matt Johnson (32:30): No, I, I mean my biggest parting thought is like the, the data staying that hybrid is an avenue that we need to be exploring. So continue, um, exploring this avenue , I mean, don't, don't get discouraged, the data supports it. Nick Clason (32:45): Yeah. And get, and, and, you know, getting into hybrid, um, and getting into some of those digital platforms. Like it can be, it can be laborious and it can be cumbersome and setting up your account and then setting up your group and then setting up your payments, like all that stuff. Like, and it can get confusing because all those companies are trying to sell you things. Yeah. And they're all the best company and that's at least what they're telling you. And so you gotta, you gotta kind of slug slug through some of those things, like setting up email marketing, you know, uh, things or setting up, you know, CHMS things or just, it it's worth it, you know, but it can get, it can feel overwhelming at times. Yep. So stick with it. It's worth it. Find something that works. There's a lot of, um, free or light versions out there. Nick Clason (33:35): And probably for most of us that that will suffice at least for a while. Yeah. Until it gets to a spot where it needs to be, you know, super, super, uh, hefty as far as the payment is so sweet. Hey, uh, that's it for us on episode five? Um, maybe six. ISMC, a semiconductor consortium, will invest Rs. 22,900 crore ($3 billion) in India's southern state of Karnataka to set up a chip-making plant, the state government said in a statement on Sunday. The plant is to come up on a 150-acre plot on the outskirts of the royal city of Mysuru, about three hours by car south of Bengaluru. ISMC is a joint venture between Abu Dhabi-based Next Orbit Ventures and Israel's Tower Semiconductor, which may soon be acquired by US chip giant Intel. This plant, India's first semiconductor fabrication unit — a 65nm analogue semiconductor foundry — is expected to generate more than 1,500 direct jobs and 10,000 indirect jobs, the Karnataka government said in its statement. Tower Semiconductor, is the principal technology partner, with the project initially funded by Next Orbit Ventures Fund. The consortium is one of the three applicants for the $10 billion incentive package for semiconductor manufacturing that India is offering under a national semiconductor mission. Amazon is cutting paid time off for front-line US workers who test positive for Covid-19, starting today, CNBC reports. All US-based Amazon workers who test positive for Covid-19 will now get up to five days of excused, unpaid leave, the company told workers in a notice sent Saturday. A spokesperson told CNBC, that workers are still able to use their sick time off if needed. Wipro will continue to look for large acquisitions in underpenetrated areas of opportunity that can be scaled even further, Economic Times reports, citing CFO Jatin Dalal. The company has taken aggressive steps to regain revenue growth leadership under CEO Thierry Delaporte, who has spent billions of dollars buying businesses including Capco, CAS Group and Rising. Last week, the $10 billion IT services giant, India's fourth-biggest, reported earnings matching street expectations. Accenture has named Nick Mulcahy, the CEO of Zag, which the tech services giant acquired, as the New Zealand country managing director, elevating him from his role as head of technologies, Consultancy reports. His predecessor Ben Morgan will assume the newly-created position of New Zealand regional growth lead. Mulcahy joined Accenture as a managing director in 2020 upon its acquisition of Wellington-headquartered Zag, a SAP and cloud consultancy, for a reported $45 million. Rise Capital, a VC firm founded by former Tiger Global executive Nazar Yasin, has entered India, hiring Anuj Mehta as its India head, Economic Times reports. The VC firm is looking to take the seed to Series B bets on Indian startups with cheque sizes ranging from $100,000 to $10 million from its third fund, Yasin, who quit Tiger Global in 2013, told ET. Rise Capital, which has backed companies such as Facily, Kitopi, Kueski and Gaia, has already closed two deals in India recently. It has invested in TradeX, an investment app company, and SaveIn, a neobank, as part of their larger seed stage rounds, according to ET. Intro: Hey everyone, welcome back to What a week!, I'm your host, Olivia Lee, here to deliver your weekly dose of the news. Let's get started! In Local News: https://katu.com/news/local/police-declare-riot-in-downtown-portland-on-may-dayhttps://www.oregonlive.com/portland/2021/05/may-day-demonstrators-gather-for-series-of-portland-events.htmlhttps://www.oregonlive.com/news/2021/05/portland-police-declare-riot-after-nighttime-may-day-demonstrators-break-downtown-windows.htmlThis past Saturday, demonstrators gathered for a series of May Day events in Portland, setting out on marches and distributing literature in Peninsula Park. The largest event began near the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, where about 100 people gathered for a march and car caravan demanding justice for migrant workers. Speakers at the event near OMSI rallied the crowd around themes of the exploitation of migrant workers, anti-U.S. imperialism and standing in solidarity with the working class.  After a day of mostly peaceful protests, demonstrators gathered in downtown Portland Saturday evening for a pair of quote “autonomous” May Day demonstrations that turned violent, causing police to declare a riot following reports of broken windows at multiple businesses.In-state news:https://katu.com/news/local/oregon-leads-country-in-covid-19-case-rateA number of states, once known to be COVID-19 hotspots, such as Florida and Texas, are now seeing a decline in coronavirus cases.  Oregon, a state that has kept cases relatively low throughout the duration of the pandemic, is now the leading state, having the nation's fastest growing rate of COVID-19 cases. Dr. Peter Graven with OHSU says a big reason for those numbers is primarily due to the fact that Oregonians got ahead of cases early, meaning fewer people were initially infected. Officials also believe this is due to a spike fueled by quote “human behavior,” as well as the more contagious B.1.1.7 variant, which is now the dominant strain in Oregon.https://www.oregonlive.com/dining/2021/04/what-does-oregons-new-indoor-dining-shutdown-mean-for-restaurants-and-how-long-will-it-last.htmlLast Tuesday, Oregon Governor Kate Brown announced that 15 counties, including most of the Portland metro area minus Washington County, will move to the state's “extreme risk” category for COVID-19 restrictions. New bans on indoor dining and strict capacity limits on gyms, movie theaters and other businesses were implemented last Friday. This is a significant stepback for many small businesses already struggling to survive. According to Brown, the ramping up of restrictions is necessary in order to keep health care providers from being “stretched to their limits” while dealing with the pandemic's latest spike. For the 15 affected counties, the ban effective as of last Friday marks the third indoor dining ban since COVID-19 cases first began to rise last year. For counties in the Portland metro area, both the initial shutdown and last winter's dining “pause” lasted about three months. There is no end date in line yet as to when this ban will end, but modeling by Oregon Health & Science University does indicate that covid cases could peak around May 4th, with hospitalizations starting to fall two weeks later. In National News:https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2021/04/27/cdc-guidelines-say-vaccinated-people-dont-need-wear-masks-outside/7395850002/https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/danvergano/fully-vaccinated-cdc-masks-guidelines Last week, the CDC released new COVID-19 masking guidelines, allowing fully vaccinated Americans to go without masks in small gatherings and outdoors, except in crowded settings.  The new guidance is intended for people who have met the fully vaccinated benchmark which is at least two weeks after their last vaccine shot. With about 30% of Americans now fully vaccinated, the new masking guidelines had been expected for some time and mark a small milestone for the country emerging from pandemic conditions. Masks should also still be worn when gathering with unvaccinated people from more than one household, and people should still get tested if exposed to someone infected, the CDC said. Under the guidance, fully vaccinated people should also still wear masks and stay 6 feet away from people while in crowds, at larger gatherings, or when visiting with someone at high risk from COVID-19. https://nypost.com/2021/04/30/tsa-extends-mask-mandate-for-planes-public-transit-to-september/Last Friday, the TSA announced that it will be extending the  mask mandate for planes and public transportation in the U.S. through at least September 13th. All US domestic travelers are expected to abide by this mandate regardless of their vaccination status. Children under two years old are exempt as are people with certain disabilities. Everyone else is subject to fines starting at $250 and rising to $1,500 for repeat offenders. Most airlines also ban customers who violate mask rules. In International News: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/29/world/middleeast/israel-mount-meron-stampede.htmlLast Friday, a stampede at a  mountainside religious celebration in Israel that drew tens of thousands of ultra-orthodox Jews left at least 45 people dead and hundreds injured. According to some estimates, about 100,000 people were crammed together late Thursday to celebrate a holiday on Mount Meron in northern Israel, despite warnings from the authorities about the risk of Covid-19 transmission. The deadly crush began around 1 a.m. on Friday, as celebrants began to pour out of a section of a compound where festivities were being held. The death toll of 45, released later by the Health Ministry, made it one of the worst civilian disasters in Israeli history.Lastly here is the wildcard news for the week:https://www.npr.org/2021/05/02/991232213/astronauts-splash-down-in-spacex-dragon-capsule-after-6-months-in-orbithttps://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/02/science/spacex-nasa-landing.htmlFour astronauts who've spent the past six months aboard the International Space Station as part of the first operational mission of SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule are back on Earth after splashing down safely last Saturday in the Gulf of Mexico. The astronauts are the first U.S. crew to make a nighttime splashdown since 1968, during the Apollo 8 mission to orbit the moon. Less than half an hour after landing, the capsule was brought out of the water onto a recovery ship.Closing:  Well that wraps up What a Week! Stay safe and see you guys next week.

A stampede at a pilgrimage in Israel has killed at least 44 people and LAPD police arrest five suspects in theft of Lady Gaga’s bulldogs This is TRT World’s Daily News Brief for Friday, April 30th. *) Israel pilgrimage stampede kills at least 44 people A massive stampede at a densely packed Jewish pilgrimage site has killed at least 44 people in northern Israel. The incident occurred at the tomb of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai in Mount Meron, where mainly ultra-Orthodox Jews flock to mark the Lag B’Omer holiday. Closed last year due to coronavirus restrictions, this year's pilgrimage was expected to be a celebratory event for Israel. *) India posts record daily rise in Covid-19 cases of 386,452 The first US emergency aid has arrived in India as it grapples with a devastating surge in Covid-19 cases. The Covid-ravaged country posted another record daily rise of more than three-hundred-and-eighty-six thousand (386,000) new cases and more than 3,400 deaths. The country is in deep crisis, with hospitals and morgues overwhelmed, and an oxygen shortage that is expected to continue well into May. *) Pentagon preparing for Taliban attacks during US withdrawal The Pentagon is preparing for possible Taliban attacks on US and coalition forces as they withdraw from Afghanistan. All US and other foreign forces were to have departed Afghanistan on May 1 under last year’s deal between the Taliban and the Trump administration. President Joe Biden decided the final but delayed withdrawal by September 11. The Taliban see the delay as a violation of the agreement. *) Kyrgyzstan says death toll in clashes with Tajikistan rises to 13 Kyrgyzstan has said it evacuated 11,500 people in the aftermath of border clashes with Tajikistan that claimed 13 lives. Kyrgyzstan's health ministry said the country had suffered 134 casualties "including 13 fatalities", with two of the injured in a serious condition. Fighting between the two countries began on Thursday as their militaries exchanged fire at the border over a water source, with a ceasefire announced the same day. And finally ... *) Five charged in violent abduction of Lady Gaga's bulldogs In Hollywood, police have arrested five people over the February abduction of Lady Gaga’s two bulldogs and the shooting of a dog walker during the theft. Four of the suspects are known street gang members, while the fifth was the woman who said she had found the dogs and safely returned them for a reward. The two bulldogs were dropped off unharmed at an LAPD station on February 26 and delivered to the musician's representatives two days after they were snatched. And that’s your daily news brief from TRT World. For more, head to trtworld.com.

GUEST: Annie Dormuth, Alberta Director for Canadian Federation of Independent Business Chapter 3: Ocean exploration with autonomous boats It’s easy to think every corner of the globe has been explored, but there are still massive swaths of ocean no one has ever seen before.  A robotics company in Saanich is designing autonomous boats that might be able to go where no man has been able to before.  GUEST:  Colin Angus, Chief Technology Officer at Open Ocean Robotics Chapter 4: Ontario to enact month-long stay-at-home order  Ontario is expected to announce a 4-week stay-at-home order today, after dozens of schools went back to online learning earlier this week.  GUEST: Travis Dhanraj, Global News Queen’s Park Bureau Chief Chapter 5: Surrey schools need a circuit break  The week after hearing Doctor Bonnie Henry say B-C needs a circuit break, and the Surrey District Parents Advisory Council is saying the same thing about schools.  Ontario has closed dozens as cases there continue to rise, and with our 7-day average rapidly approaching a thousand cases it’s easy to see why parents here are concerned.  GUEST: Rani Sanghera, Director of the Surrey District Parents Advisory Council Chapter 6: All US adults to be eligible for a vaccine on April 19 When the pandemic began we were eager to close down the border with the US because of how many cases they were reporting.  The situation might be reversed in a couple of months though, they’re administering vaccines at a mind-boggling rate right across the country.  GUEST: Reggie Cecchini, Global News Washington Correspondent See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Afterward, he began working in career services working for the State of California working with US Veterans. An economic downturn led to being laid off. and took the opportunity to relocate to Orlando, Florida to be close to family. During COVID he was led into his current role of providing consulting and coaching services virtually. Zander provides services through an Employer Assistance Program (EAP). Check to see if you have an EAP as part of your benefits. Familiarize yourself with their offerings and take advance of them. For example, many offer mental health services up to a set number of appointments. Many are now providing special services in response to COVID helping employees cope with stress, anxiety, depression, financial concerns, life coping, relationship coaching, sleep hygiene, and more. Zander is also through consulting helping to establish wellness and inclusion oriented webinars for companies. There is a gap between policy and practice. Due to COVID, there is a huge burnout issue. All the additional home and at-home care responsibilities and issues resulting from COVID while working remotely from home has made many to feel isolated, disconnected, and burnt out. Zander shared that he is working on a new educational service exploring childhood adverse experiences, their impact on adulthood health, outlook, and lifestyle, and how to deal with such adversity in a healthy way. He explains the strong study based research that correlates trauma to addiction, homelessness, obesity, diabetes, heart health. We chatted about how the LGBTQI community member due to social stigma and family ignorance, religious intolerance dogmatic beliefs, bullying, being shunned, being harassed, and so much more are an adverse experience which also can, and often do affect, the LGBTQ persons. We chat quite a bit about the US Veteran Administrative Health services and in general how great they are. Zander shared how the US VA has two policy directives for the LGB veterans and the second for transgender and intersexed veterans. These policies outline all the rights and entitlements for LGBTQI+ veterans have as medical patients. In addition, all VA centers have at least one LGBTQI+ Patient Care Coordinator who is like a patient advocate. The Affordable Care Act ACA) aka Obama Care opened the VA up to provide Healthcare to all US veterans who qualify based on income. All US veterans are encouraged to check out the VA's website to learn all the facts and see if you may qualify. Know When It's Time to Stop Blooming and Go

High Vibes Living with Jennifer

One year after I wrote an article entitled 'Bloom Before You Go' that was a message to me, to be happy where I was now so I could have closure here and create the energetic paradigm for my new location from a place of joy, I got another message, bloom time was over, it was time to go. Other places are calling me and I am ready to go. I had done all of the blooming I could, ‘grow time’ is over and it’s now ‘go time’. You can listen to that article in podcast episode 15.I did my best to bloom, to be happy in a place where I was very unhappy, to put the lessons I had learned in place were I was and to seek fulfillment there, instead of dashing out the door at the first opportunity. And I did that successfully, there was nothing more for me to do now but since I had decided to be at my highest vibes even though I did not want to be there, that was the energy I was taking to my new place. I know I have put this article in the context of moving to a new area but this is part of every life transformation. The energy we leave with is the energy we start our new life path withWe do have to ‘bloom where we are’ before we can move on because things are not always better somewhere else. And we have work to complete where we are so we can move on to another place at a higher vibe.  If we move on when we’re resentful, miserable, and unhappy, we’ll take that energy with us into the new place AND we will attract a place with that kind of energy. It can seem like we’re the last in line, that others get to move on while we have to stay in a place where we really are not happy, don’t fit, and don’t seem to resonate with the energy of the place at all.But eventually it is time to move on. That day of release we have long been awaiting finally comes around for us.There’s another reason why we stay in places longer than we need to and this is part of the ‘bloom before you go’ lesson. Sometimes that lesson is for us to take control over when we are finished, when we give a voice to our soul’s desire to expand into new potentials and abandon our quest to heal everyone or change the world.Sometimes that’s hard to do because we want to make sure that we have fulfilled our entire purpose where we are, learned all of its lessons, and done all we could do. Sometimes the fulfillment of that life purpose is how many people we heal and transform. So we hang around, sending small or large hints at them to get on with it so we can move on. But, here’s an insight flash for you, our life purpose and life path movement do not depend on what anyone does with their healing. Our mission is to put the information in front of them and let them choose. This is how we honor their energetic sovereignty.Imagine what would happen if you went to a restaurant and after the server brought your food, they tied a bib around your neck, sat next to you, and fed you every bite, also telling you that you had to eat everything on your plate or you would not get dessert. You would probably think they were mad and would never go to that restaurant again.Mostly, though, we don’t want to repeat lessons in our new place, we want a new beginningMy geraniums are in full bloom now, although winter is approaching and they will die with the first frost. They know that their blooming season is nearly over but they’re giving me one final burst of beauty before they go. They could just stop blooming because they’re going to die anyway — we have already had a few cold mornings, and they know that winter is coming. But they are blooming until the end, going out with a glorious finale and that’s how I’m going to go too. When we know it’s time to go we can stop blooming, wait, hold back on our joy but it’s much more fun to keep blooming as we walk out the door. The decision to move on is often hard depending on how we view it. If we want to have perfection and completion, and we have created expectations about how that will look, we may never go because we will be waiting for something that may  never happen. But if we focus on our needs and how we feel, and what our heart tells us is right for us, then knowing when to stop blooming and go will be clear. That doesn’t mean we have to pull up our blooms by the roots before it’s time, we can continue to bloom as we prepare for the next steps. In fact, it’s easier to plan for new beginnings when we’re in a place of joy than when we’re miserable and unhappy. Wouldn’t we rather move from joy to joy, than hope that the next place will be better than where we are? I have run away from unhappiness too many times to know that unfinished business finds its way into my suitcases and follows me to my new place, no matter how much I want it to just disappear. The timing of this realization is classic, as a year ago I got the message to ‘bloom before I go’ and I did. I focused on being grounded and happy right where I am. It wasn’t easy because I really wanted to move on, but I also knew that I did not want to repeat these lessons in my new place.  Now, a year later, the message is clear again, ‘know when it’s time to stop blooming’, prepare for the next steps, while I am enjoying the beauty of the present moment. It’s all going to happen with divine timing, which is not a matter of time, it’s a process of energy flow. And if we disconnect from our current space while we’re in full bloom, just imagine what high vibes we are setting our energetic paradigms with for our new spaces.Impatience is not going to make this happen any faster, since we can’t hurry our way into new beginnings. We can, but if we think we need to rush into them, then we’re running away from something that is going to follow us. Closure must be clean and clear now, in all aspects. Taking responsibility for our reality means owning everything we created so we know what we don’t want to create in our next space. And if we let new beginnings flow gracefully from the beauty of our blooms, then we can leave our old path with a glorious memory of beauty, rather than frustration, unhappiness, and anger. If you have been ‘blooming before you go’, it just may be time to stop blooming and gather your seeds so you can plant them somewhere else.Copyright (c) 2020 by Jennifer Hoffman and Enlightening Life OmniMedia, Inc. As international firms scale in the US market, they increasingly face the burden of navigating a complex regulatory environment that differs from state to state. This is particularly true when it comes to employing people. All US employers must comply with both federal and state labour regulations governing everything from workers compensation insurance, employee benefits and payroll taxes. Key differences exist with how US workers access healthcare and how companies approach safety and risk management in the market. Furthermore, international investors must ensure they classify employees in accordance with Internal Revenue Service (IRS) frameworks and that state and federal payroll taxes are remitted as appropriate. International investors employing people on the ground in the US face a steep learning curve from a compliance perspective—even US domestic firms find their compliance responsibilities as an employer burdensome. For this reason, many US companies outsource the management of payroll and human resources to experts such as Professional Employer Organizations (PEOs). In episode 4 of the America Made Easy Podcast, we explore the compliance requirements that international companies employing talent in the US face and consider options for managing those responsibilities with Josh Balster, President and CEO of Avitus Group. Josh leads the Avitus International Team and in Episode 4 shares his years of experience helping international investors work through their employment challenges in the US market. We talk through the PEO model in the U.S. and how international investors can leverage it to streamline payroll and human resources so that they can focus on revenue growth. Tune in to our 4th full length episode to gain a deeper understanding of the unique aspects of people management in the US market and tools available to companies, such as Co-Employment, to ensure they do not run afoul of federal or state regulations. This episode will leave listeners with a clearer understanding of how they can move forward with their U.S. hiring and human resource management in a way that minimizes overhead and provides their employees with the benefits essential to maintaining great talent. Value Bombs from the Podcast Companies with 50 or fewer employees in the US are not required to provide access to healthcare coverage for their workers. Workers Compensation Insurance is mandated at the state level in the US for companies to have in place for all employees regardless of their work duties. PEO partnerships can allow small businesses in the US, whether international or domestic, to extend high quality corporate style benefits such as a 401k, dental and vision coverage etc. to their employees. From 2012 to 2018, an estimated $10 billion in donations to US colleges and universities by foreign governments fueled radical Islamism and conducted espionage and theft of intellectual property. The USDOE in 2019 announced investigation of donations to US colleges and universities by China, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. Investigations by the Clarion Project into additional disclosures filed by US colleges and universities after the USDOE announcement revealed that more than $1 billion of foreign donations were not reported under US law creating a “black hole” as to what were nefarious purposes of these foreign country donors. In February 2020, the USDOE reported that both Harvard and Yale failed to report four years of more than $375 million in foreign donations and contracts. All US college and universities receiving federal higher education funding are required to report foreign donations over the amount of $250,000. Beyond the Matrix 08JULY2020 - PODCAST

In recent times Dr. Melby has published work on the relationshop between energy flux and the probability of maintaining a previous loss of body weight. Long-term maintenance of weight loss requires sustained energy balance at the reduced body weight. This could be attained by coupling low total daily energy intake (TDEI) with low total daily energy expenditure (TDEE; low energy flux), or by pairing high TDEI with high TDEE (high energy flux). Not likely. In this experience we celebrate the 2019 holiday season with a look at some of our crazy and (somewhat) horrific holiday travel stories. But first, Vinny and Geoff celebrate a milestone in this experience. This is the 25th show that they have done in tandem. Here's to the next 25 being just as fun of a ride. Vinny shares his incredible journey from CPH-LHR-AMS-JFK-YHM-YYC-YVR during a massive New Year's storm in YYZ. How many things can go wrong for Vinny on this flight? So many that we interject a couple of stories from Geoff along the way. Although Vinny's story is related to a standby experience, remember that you too could be affected by weather and become a standby passenger. Vinny starts his journey in CPH – it was just after New Year's – and world weather seemed normal, for now. He connects rather uneventfully to LHR and then AMS (little does he know what's coming). Flying standby on KLM he notices his flight options across Canada are quickly disappearing as there are no seats available. All US options were disappearing as well, except for JFK. So off to New York for Vinny. Geoff shares his experience when he caught the flu just before having to fly from VIE-DUS (don't worry we're just sharing the travel experience). He makes it to VIE and manages to catch his flight – but when he arrives in a delirious state to DUS, just how many times can he catch the wrong train? The next day he catches the correct train to FRA for a connection to YYC with Air Canada...all the while missing the massive 2013 Ice Storm that hit Toronto. He arrives in YYC - only to be subject to a medical check first implemented after the SARS epidemic. We return to Vinny who is now at JFK – but his bag isn't. The storm is brewing, and Vinny knows to get priority he needs to get to LGA. He learns about the "passenger rest area" at LGA – even with official blankets. He wakes up to find that LGA-YYZ flights are getting cancelled all over. But wait, there is a WestJet crew – maybe there's a chance? Disappointment awaits – how did the sand get in the engine? What hope is there left? Not much by air, the open road was the only thing left and there was some good fortune with rental costs. Just in time to drive through Manhattan at rush hour! Geoff shares another winter holiday travel delay experience yet again caused by a blizzard at YYZ. Conditions meant that the YUL-YOW-YEG ticket became a standby ticket, but only the YUL-YOW segment could be confirmed. Some t-shirts were traded for hotel and meal vouchers since he wasn't flying further that day. Eventually he got back to YEG with an upgrade to business class. The key lesson in the adventure is to be nice to front line staff...honey will get your further than vinegar – but make sure you know your cancellation or delay rights. We return to Vinny, in a rental car, in Manhattan at rush hour. No storm visible yet the sun is still shining. But as night falls the storm unleashes its fury. The storm is so terrible that it closes the Interstate. Vinny pushes on, blasting through the blizzard in Upstate New York on country roads – all the while having no proper winter clothing. Finally, he reaches the Canadian border in the wee hours of the morning – with snow caked on the back of his car – and the severity of the storm becomes fully known. Vinny has to get to another southern Ontario airport – YHM it is. But how to return the car – since it's not at YYZ and there is no return desk? Vinny leaves multiple notes and voicemails and parks the car hoping for the best as he boards the flight to connect at YYC. How does it turn out? Four hours after landing, where was Vinny? Back on a flight as crew! Lessons from the experience: 1) Keep moving forward; 2) figure out what your biggest block of problem could be; 3) Be prepared that it might cost a bit of money to get out of a jam; 4) Look for telltale signs of things that are happening; 5) Make sure you have all of your alerts set up...and check the weather. Oh, and by the way...what happened to Vinny's WS travel buddy? News Items: Flyertalk article "The Best and Worst Airports for Holiday Travel" breakingtravelnews article "Christmas getaway begins in earnest at easyJet" Vinny and Geoff give big kudos to crews and staff working over Christmas. Here's to another great 25 experiences together. Wow! it's been a long and crazy year. So much has happened here at You're 86, and here we are almost into the 20s again! Fortunately we don't have prohibition this time around.  We've covered a lot on the show this year and I wanted to give you my 2019 top 10 tips for bartenders. These are my favorite bits of knowledge from all of the interviews this past year. They are things that have definitely helped me, and I hope they help you too. Listen to the episode in the player or wherever podcasts are found. Be sure to share with your friends in the industry too. Read on after the break for the list of my top 10 tips for bartenders. 2019 top 10 tips for bartenders 1 - From Episode 0: One of the easiest ways to spot a counterfeit bill is by looking for the vertical security thread. All US currency notes of denominations of $5 or higher, printed after the early 90s will have this thread. You'll spot it easily when you hold the bill up to light. I recommend using the light of your POS screen to discreetly check out the bill. 2 - From Episode 2: Nurse Andrew Campbell advised, when you cut yourself, rinse the cut with water and apply pressure with clean gauze. If necessary, wash the area around the cut with soap and water. Putting soap, rubbing alcohol or anything else in the cut itself can actually cause more damage. 3 - From Episode 4: Beverage Director Andrew Meltzer recommended, when you have to cut someone off, plan ahead, be clear and offer alternatives. Use it as an opportunity to provide further hospitality. 4 - From Episode 5: Founder of Jigger and Dash Tanya Clark suggested finding the type of exercise that is right for you and that you're excited about. If you don't like running, no one is making you go running. There's something out there for you. 5 - From Episode 10: Beverage Director Enoch Tonatiuh recommended taking a vacation after opening a new bar. As soon as the dust settles and your operation starts to get into a groove, take a few days off for yourself. Opening a new bar is both exhilarating and incredibly stressful. 6 - From Episode 12: Mark Goodwin of The Pin Project had so much to say about our relationship with alcohol as bartenders. One of his recommendations for those times when you're offered a shot but don't want to take one is to take a shot of grapefruit juice instead. Not only will the sugar in the juice help appease the part of your brain that wants alcohol, you’ll still be taking part in the ritual of taking a shot with friends. 7 - From Episode 17: Hannah Chamberlain of Spirited LA stressed the importance of greeting every guest that walks in. Prepare a greeting that works for you and your bar and use it every time anyone walks in. 8 - From Episode 18: Joanna Lioce, long-time bartender at Vesuvio Cafe, has had to kick out a lot of drunken guests in her tenure there. We have reached a crucial point in our history, here in Western Civilization. And actually: we are at the point where merely saying Western Civilization is considered RACIST! Does this wake some of you ‘live and let live’ well-meaning folks up?? At long last??This might seem somewhat strange, for a ‘Paleo podcast’, that is all about ancestral health and wellness, to be talking about. “Politics?? PaleoJay, you are off your rocker- I just want to be healthy, along with my friends and family, and of course my neighbors, who make up my “tribe” in my homeplace!”Well, me too! And that is why I am speaking out on this today. The majority of our supposed political “leaders” has totally let us all down! I am speaking to anyone in Western Civilization, anyone in the heretofore WHITE WORLD. That is: those peoples who actually built and maintain Western Civilization. And, Western Civilization is in actuality: CIVILIZATION. For, after all, the civilization created by western people, from the Greeks up to the Romans, through Europe and the Renaiisance and right up to today…Well, it’s ALL US! No ifs, whys, or buts. People of European descent conceived of, crafted, and built the complicated, intricate ediface of Western Civilization. It’s all us- we came up with it all, and it was really, really hard; and really, really significant. We white westerners are a very polite people, actually. We never liked to point out what we have done, and tried to spread our good ideas, our self-created egalitarianism and means to attain wealth through private propery, industry, and self-reliance amongst the rest of the world. We never tried to keep it all “to ourselves”, not at all. We have great ideas, great systems, and actually we are somewhat bewildered when other races and groups fail to join us in our overwhelming, unprecedented success!Just as I strive to spread the news of natural, ancestral health as hard as I can, and have for over 10 years; it seems that most people resist the news that health is their own responsibility, and not their doctor’s, or the government, or the medical clinics!NO- just as in all the truly important parts of your life- it is up to you! And this is the bottom line of Western Civilization, with its freedom and autonomy, which is the watchword of true civilization and true culture: With freedom comes reponsibility. We are responsible for ourselves and our families: not the government, not other people all around us- no, we need to provide for ourselves, and not be a burden on others. Only then can we help out others who are truly in need! This very notion, which is fundamental to Western Civilization, has been turned on its head in recent years. Nowadays, if our health is failing- it is the government’s fault- what are they going to do about it!!??If we don’t feed our children, or provide for them- what is the government going to do about it??And so it goes. The success of Western Man has been so great, that the rest of the world is envious, and proposes endlessly that the reason we have been so successful is because we stole our wealth from the losers. That is, those whose societies are so dysfunctional and maladapted that they can’t even provide for themselves, much less compete! Our ancient, European ancestors survived the Ice Age by cooperating, and by developing compassion. Only by thus cooperating could they have survived, much less prospered duringt t

#MAGA Michael AVENATTI Got Arrested #MAGAFirstNews with @PeterBoykin AOC FACES BACKLASH IN WAR OF WORDS WITH WAR VET CRENSHAW: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., is facing mounting criticism for feuding with freshman colleague Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, over his response to domestic terrorism ... The dustup began after Crenshaw reacted to comments made by Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., who had been criticized for characterizing the 9/11 terrorist attacks as “some people did something.” That prompted Ocasio-Cortez to defend her Minnesota ally, going after the Texas congressman for not co-sponsoring the 9/11 Victim’s Compensation Fund. “In 2018, right-wing extremists were behind almost ALL US domestic terrorist killings. Why don’t you go do something about that?” Ocasio-Cortez told Crenshaw. MORE LEGAL TROUBLE FOR AVENATTI: Embattled attorney Michael Avenatti faces new federal embezzlement charges for allegedly stealing millions of dollars from clients, cheating on his taxes, lying to investigators and trying to hide money from debtors in bankruptcy proceedings ... A 36-count indictment announced on Thursday builds on wire-fraud and tax-fraud charges brought last month by federal prosecutors in Los Angeles. It is the latest in Avenatti's fall from grace after he became a cable news darling last year while representing former porn star Stormy Daniels in her legal battles against President Trump. According to Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett, Avenatti may need to get used to a jumpsuit. CITY OF CHICAGO SUES SMOLLETT: The city of Chicago sued actor Jussie Smollett on Thursday for the cost of investigating his controversial case, as promised, one week after the "Empire" actor refused to reimburse the city ... In a statement obtained by Fox News, the city's law department said on Thursday that it filed a civil complaint against Smollett, 36, in the Circuit Court of Cook County "that pursues the full measure of damages allowed under the false statements ordinance." The lawsuit doesn't include a specific monetary figure, but suggests the amount the city will seek from Smollett will be higher than the $130,000 sought earlier. HERMAN CAIN ELEVATION TO FED MAY BE DOA: President Trump's recently-floated elevation of Herman Cain to the seven-member Federal Reserve board has lost critical Republican support in the Senate, Fox News has learned, all but dooming the former GOP presidential candidate's chances ... Fox News has confirmed that North Dakota Republican Sen. Kevin Cramer is opposed to Cain's prospective nomination to the Fed. Cramer would be the fourth GOP nay, joining Sens. Lisa Murkowski, Cory Gardner, and Mitt Romney. With 53 Republicans in the Senate, losing four GOPers makes it unlikely Cain could score confirmation. Kevin Hassett: GOP senators shouldn't count out Herman Cain

#Assange's arrest sparks debate over #FreedomOfThePress as extradition battle looms @AOC faces backlash #MAGAFirstNews with @PeterBoykin LEGAL DEBATE OVER ASSANGE BEGINS: The dramatic arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London on Thursday will be followed by a likely lengthy legal battle over his extradition to the United States to face conspiracy charges. It also has triggered a debate over press freedom and whether Assange is really a journalist ... Assange is accused of engaging in a 2010 conspiracy with Chelsea Manning, the former U.S. Army analyst, in breaking a password stored on a U.S. Defense Department computer connected to a U.S. government computer network for classified documents and communications. Manning later transmitted a trove of classified government files to Assange, whose website, WikiLeaks, posted the materials to a worldwide audience. Assange's attorney, Jennifer Robinson, characterized his arrest as an assault of press freedom worldwide, saying, "This precedent means that any journalist can be extradited for prosecution in the United States for having published truthful information about the United States." Prosecutors argue Assange's methods are obtaining classified information were illegal. In addition, Assange's arrest may give new ammunition to foes of President Trump who are still holding on to Russia collusion theories. Unresolved questions about Assange's role in the release of stolen Democratic emails leading up to the 2016 presidential election will likely resurface. AOC says journalism 'aspect' of Assange arrest has her 'concerned' Hillary Clinton: Assange the 'only foreignerthat this administration would welcome to the U.S.' AOC FACES BACKLASH IN WAR OF WORDS WITH WAR VET CRENSHAW: Rep. (45:14)Dinosaur Jr – Goin Down (extrait de l'album Give a Glimpse of what yer not, sorti en 2016 chez Jagjaguwar.
