Apparently the Coat of Arms debate rages on as the Tassa Association wants the real Trini instrument on the emblem instead of the imported steelpan. Brilliant! It's an episode of dualities as we discuss the mourning as the news of the closing of the famed Carrat Shed in Marabella spread against the backdrop of apparent celebration of the woes of Movie Towne. It's a mixed bag when it comes to the reactions to the passing of Lawrence Duprey, once heralded as one of the greatest businessmen in the region. We do a deep dive into his legacy and the unfair tainting of his name and the hostile takeover of his businesses masked as a financial bailout. The music in this episode is a direct response to the divisive statement made by the Tassa Association of Trinidad & Tobago suggesting that Steelpan isn't 100% Trinidadian.Enjoy!!

As a pillar in the London pan scene for decades, Delphina James has established herself firmly as a pan advocate, music educator and pan innovator keen on helping her community improve its capabilities for the instrument. One of her biggest accomplishments is her book series, "Learn Music On...", created specifically for each major instrument in the steel orchestra, including tenor pan, double seconds, guitar pan and bass pans. Songwriters Guild Live is a weekly radioshow in Amsterdam, focussed on artists who write their own songs. This week your host was Ro Halfhide. A Montréal-born Trinidadian-Canadian, Zaynab comes to the music scene with a wealth of cultural and musical diversity. Her recent Live EP (2018), is the debut to her career as a fronting singer-songwriter where she draws musical and rhythmic inspiration from her Caribbean roots and merges with folk, her heart and soul. Her voice is sweet, unaffected and naturally blended, and carries a strong sense of rhythm. Zaynab grew up in a large family of musicians, specializing on Steelpan, and got an early start to the life of an artist. Being the youngest of the lot of six children, the formula was already set by the time she was six. Zaynab was performing throughout Eastern Canada with her family, the "Von-Trapps of Steelpan", and gaining invaluable life lessons. Now, in addition to steelpan, Zaynab has grown into a sensitive, dynamic and well-rounded musician and is an equally talented percussionist, vocalist, songwriter and drummer, holding a drum-major degree from Humber College. Over the years, Zaynab has had the opportunity to perform with a variety of local and international artists including Alysha Brilla, Jason Wilson, Martin Carthy, Dave Swarbrick and Pee Wee Ellis, and performing at notable festivals including Woodford Folk Festival (Australia), Hillside Festival (Canada) and Celtic Connections (Scotland). On her own front, Zaynab took her Live EP tour on the road to Western Canada in September 2018 and over to Eastern Canada with Arlene Paculan in November 2018, performing in both house concerts and local live music venues. As for 2019, Zaynab is working towards releasing a series of singles, a new EP and tour dates, so far, in both Canada and USA. When she isn’t performing, Zaynab runs music workshops at various schools within the multiple school boards in Ontario. Her workshops are delivered using steelpan, percussion or band instruments with the goal being more than learning repertoire. Her workshops run in schools with higher numbers of newcomers to Canada, for groups with special learning abilities, as part of health and wellness conferences and for overall team building and strengthening of non-verbal and nonviolent communication. She recently attended a Musicians Without Borders Training of Workshop Leaders program, in Ede, to help enhance her workshop leading abilities. In a realistic world, Zaynab would be able to integrate touring as a performer and running music-based workshops along the way.

Pioneering steelpan jazz musician, Rudy "Two Left" Smith chats with Jazz in the Islands editor, Nigel A. Campbell, about his career. His beginnings in Trinidad, his sojourn into Europe to perform and ultimately record are discussed. Landmark albums like his Otinku with the Modern Sound Quintet are put into context as a steelpan jazz first. Now resident in Denmark, Smith's career spans more than 50 years playing and recording music on the steelpan, being among the few still alive who made recordings on the Cook Records label here in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. A bebop musician who uses the steelpan as his instrumental voice in the jazz conversation on the band stand, Smith continues making albums that still garner rave reviews from jazz critics and stand as benchmarks for a new generation to strive towards. A major influence on a number of new steelpan jazz musicians, Smith is modest in his recognition of the deserved accolades. Mon, 19 Feb 2018

A few weeks ago I attended our local radio station WMNF 88.5's benefit - Karbbyan Kruze Music Festival hosted by Angela B. at Skippers Smokehouse and saw some amazing, talented and fun performers throughout the day. When Bickley Rivera and Island Chill band came out to play, I was immediately enthralled with her playing on the steel drums and the percussion and groove of the band they were so much fun to listen to. I couldn't stop moving to the music. I had a great chance to meet her and see if she would be a guest on the sow and she agreed. So, today's episode you will meet Bickley Rivera, the high priestess of steel drums. About Bickley: Bickley Rivera began her recording career in 1985 and branched into the Latin and Caribbean genre when she and her husband, Nelson, formed the group "Cuba Libre" in 1992, where she was keyboardist and lead singer. They originated and produced "Caribbean Madness", the only Caribbean Riverboat Cruise series on the Connecticut River, which sold out for 5 seasons. She transitioned to Steelpan in 2005, training under many seasoned island artists. She has opened for national groups, such as "America" and performed with many other international artists, Tony "Kitch" Paine (son of legendary Lord Kitchner), Jazz singer Joan Cartwright, Eugene Grey (touring guitarist for reggae-star Burning Spear), performed in Trinidad's International Panorama 2015 semi-final competition under the leadership of Andy Narell.

Salmon Cupid, born in the Caribbean Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (T&T also affectionately referred to as Trinbago), fell in love with and learned to play the steelpan there. He began formally playing with St. Augustine Senior Comprehensive School where he led the band in several music festivals and competitions. Under his captaincy, St. Augustine won the Panorama competition and walked away with first place at the Steelpan Music Festival. He also made several international tours with the school to Europe. His experience on these tours confirmed that his idea of the electronic steelpan was crucial to the progress of steelpan. In 1994, Salmon was selected by Pan Trinbago to be the Steelpan Cultural Ambassador as part of the demand by schools internationally to teach and expose the steelpan in Canada. He accepted that opportunity to expand his horizons. It led to his decision to relocate to Canada where he currently resides. In 2000, he boldly entered a steelband in the Kiwanis Music Festival in Toronto. For the next 6 years the band consistently won the competition. Also in 2000, with the support of the students, parents, teachers, and community at large, he founded an alumni band, the Toronto All Stars Steel Orchestra (TASSO). The steelpan is an acoustic musical instrument indigenous to T&T. In honor to the pioneers who originated and developed the instrument and art form, he strived to remain mindful and respectful of the pioneers. To get a better sense of the instrument, click on this link. To view a video of the debut of Salmon's invention, the e-pan, in concert, click here.
