Welcome back to the Blues Focus Podcast. Today we have another special guest in former Birmingham City captain, Paul Robinson. Within the time we spent with him, Paul talked to us about his six years at the club, his introduction into professional football, and his mentality when it comes to leadership and being an overall pro. Paul was signed under Lee Clark in 2012. His contract was only supposed to be for a few months to help out after two of our most esteemed defenders, Stephen Carr and David Murphy, were out due to injury leaving very little choice in backup. However because of his passionate performances, Paul signed an extended contract that saw him through to the end of his career in 2018, which was a 3-1 win on the last day of the season against Fulham. We loved having him on. It was great to absorb everything he had to say and he is more than welcome to come back on in the future. Hope you enjoy. BWI Daily host Thomas Frank Carr interviews Indiana beat writer Dustin Dopirak of the Indy Star and the Bloomington Herald-Times to find out more about what's going on with the Indiana football team.  The Hoosiers are 2-2 so far this season with losses to two ranked teams in Iowa and Cincinnati. Dustin starts by taking T-Frank through the ups and downs of quarterback Michael Penix Jr.'s recovery from his third knee injury and second ACL tear in his right knee. He says that the injury itself didn't seem to be the issue early, but something else. Dustin also explains the story behind all of Penix Jr.'s interceptions to start the season and why head coach Tom Allen has stuck by the senior despite his struggles.   The pair also discuss how the Indiana offensive line has been dealing with its own injuries and how that has affected Penix Jr. and his ability to play his style of football early in the season. The offensive line, Dustin says, plays well enough to get the job done on the ground and through the air but won't blow anyone away.  They also discuss what transfer running back Stephen Carr brings to the table and what he's been missing in his game so far this season. That leads into a discussion about the receivers and skill positions that Dustin says are embattled through the first part of the year, not only due to injuries to key players but also the rocky road that tight end Peyton Hendershot has been walking for the last year.  From there, the two switch their attention to the defense and the front seven, which is not a bad unit, but like the offensive line, may be more a sum of their parts than individual stars. The one star Dustin does point out is middle linebacker Micah McFadden, and explains how his absence from a game this season changed the course of the competition and how much he means to the defense.  The Indiana defense has been injury-riddled, like the skill positions and Dustin takes T-Frank through the list of players that won't play or may not play on Saturday and how that matchup will go beyond just Penn State receiver Jahan Dotson and cornerback Tiawan Mullen. He discusses the players that stand out, and what Indiana has been missing so far this season from that group.  Finally, he gives his impressions of Penn State and what he expects the key matchups to be on Saturday.    SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: http://bluewhiteillustrated.com/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://bluewhiteillustrated.podbean.com/ Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/BWIonRivals

After a fateful internship with the Seattle Seahawks and a stop at USC, Deland then signed on with the Kansas City Chiefs and became nothing less than a Super Bowl champion. Hello Interactors,We’re coming up on spring in the northern hemisphere so this post eases us in to cartography — via the brain.Cognitive maps play an integral role in our ability to interact with place. We don’t even give it much thought, but our brains are amazing cartographers. As interactors, you’re special individuals self-selected to be a part of an evolutionary journey. You’re also members of an attentive community so I welcome your participation. Please leave your comments below or feel free to email me directly. Now let’s go…LOCK DOWN. WALK ON.It was a year ago this month that I started walking. A lot. For me anyway. Last summer I’d walk four or so miles every other day and up to 17 miles on the weekend. I would pull out my phone, launch Google Maps, and look for a patch of green within the city limits of my town, Kirkland, Washington. I would then set out to visit it by foot.I’ve lived in Kirkland for nearly three decades. Only in this last year do I feel like I really know it. For thirty years I’d wake up, eat breakfast, jump in my car, and commute 6.5 miles to Microsoft. Yes, I’d sometimes bike or bus and I’ve run and biked around Kirkland many times. But, honestly, I haven’t really lived in Kirkland, I’ve mostly just slept here. If anything, I’ve mostly lived on its roads. It’s a common pattern in America. Climb in a car and hit the road on your daily commute. The lockdown has disrupted that routine for those of us fortunate enough to work from home. Many, including me, don’t miss the commute. But others, I’ve heard, miss having the alone time that comes with the Single-Occupancy Vehicle. Zooming has taken on new meaning these days, but there’s something satisfying about zooming along alone in your thoughts in a climate controlled capsule caressing the concrete. I think we’ve probably all experienced those moments when you realize you have no recollection of the last mile or so of driving. We are literally lost in our thoughts. But you’re taking it all in whether you know it or not. Your brain does not like being lost, so it makes sure your eyes are capturing images of your surroundings. It uses those images to build a map in your brain – a cognitive map. The commuter’s cognitive map is special map based on the path of your commute. Each successive trip further imprints those images into your brain while filling gaps in between. It’s building a coherent collection of ordered memories. Unknowingly, the brain stores a collection of anchor-points that are reliably recalled should the need arise to alter your interaction with place. TURN LEFT AT THE WATERTOWERIn 1969, MIT Urban Design professor and practitioner, Stephen Carr and Northeastern University Psychology professor, Dale Schissler, conducted an experiment to better understand how we build up impressions of a place. They started by interviewing commuters in the Boston area, including passengers. They had them relive their journeys and recorded environmental cues they recalled. For example, a sign, a building, or a tree. The next day they strapped a camera to their head with an optical device pointing at the cornea of their eye. They wanted to see exactly what the commuters saw and where exactly they were looking. I’m not sure what it was like strapping a 1960’s era camera to the head, but it probably looked like this Evans and Sutherland virtual reality contraption from 1960:While on their journey, commuters where prompted to verbally describe landmarks that were recorded by the researchers. Days later, they showed the commuters the images they observed along with film footage from the trip and had them again identify landmarks on their journey. The researchers tallied which images were recalled by each set of commuters and determined these as meaningful landmarks. What they found is the number of meaningful landmarks varied among those new to the area, routine commuters, and passengers. The average driver, including those new to the area, recalled 10 objects over a four mile section of the trip. Passengers recalled 21. And routine commuters were able to recall 28. But there was one thing they all had in common. They remembered similar images and in the same order. Routine commuters were adding more detail and filling in gaps, but appeared to be using the same anchor-points as a drivers new to the area. This is a significant finding. It suggests our brain is reliable at building a cognitive map made of anchor-points – even if the path is unfamiliar to us. We use these anchor-points as orientation should we need to recall them at a later time. It also demonstrates our ability to learn and modify our path and our image of a city over time.IT’S IN THE BRAINNearly a decade later, in 1978, neuroscientist John O’Keefe had a similar curiosity of cognitive maps. Instead of tracking and measuring the mechanics of the eye, he probed and measured the cellular activity of the brain. By implanting microelectrodes into the hippocampus region of a lab rat’s brain, he was able to record electrical signals emitted from their brain cells as they navigated a maze in search of food. These cells were mostly inactive until the rat happened upon a particular place. A cell would fire and continue firing until it left this region. O’Keefe then implanted other electrodes into other cells and discovered some would come to life when others fell dormant. He discovered three classes of cells that harmonize with one another in assisting the rats through the maze: Cells for location in space: where in the environment the mouse was. Cells for orientation: which direction the mouse was facing. Cells for distance: the distance between anchor-points. This trio of harmonized cellular electricity embedded in the center of the brain is another way of describing a cognitive map. O’Keefe won a Nobel Prize for his discovery. The field of neuroscience continued on O’Keefe’s path. Now equipped with brain imaging capabilities, scientists have gone on to visualize these phenomena in real-time. And what they have discovered are many more classes of engaged cells than just the three O’Keefe identified. It’s not a trio after all. It’s a symphony. And it’s not residing just inside the hippocampus, but throughout the brain. As enamored we are with our phones with gyroscopes and GPS, they’re nothing compared to an animal’s navigational system. Shane O’Mara is a neuroscientist currently doing experimental brain research at Trinity College Dublin. He notes,“…there are many other cell types contributing to our sense of space. Place cells signal where you are; head direction cells signal where you are heading; the boundary cells…tell you about the edges of the environment; and grid cells provide a metric for space. In addition to the core GPS system, there are other cells that signal distance to objects, speed of the head and body movement, and your relative upright position. So our picture of our brain is becoming much more complex.”But another discovery O’Keefe made with his food seeking anesthetized maze rats, is that their cellular GPS had a far weaker signal when the rat was pulled through the maze on a trolley. What I realize now is that after nearly three decades of commuting, my brain has an over-developed path-based cognitive map of a 13 mile round trip commute from home to work and back. In fact, my cognitive map of the entire region is comprised of paths derived from a drive through a road network as I sat silently in a seat speeding down the street. It turns out walking and cognitive mapping are mutually dependent systems that are only optimized when done together. Driving or riding as a passenger are poor substitutes for enhancing our interactions with place. In the words of Shane O’Mara, “The brain’s navigational and mapping and memory systems are so intertwined as to be almost one and the same. Walking to somewhere depends on the brain’s navigational system, and in turn walking provides a vast amount of ongoing information to the brain’s mapping and navigation systems. These are mutually enriching and reinforcing systems.”This explains why walking around Kirkland over the last year has introduced me to a city I’ve known for nearly 30 years. And walking has not only enriched my cognitive map, it’s enriched the love of my environment and my own emotional well-being. Walking makes us happy. WALK AND WHISTLEIn a 2016 study out of Iowa State University (Go Cyclones), researchers Jeffrey Conrath Miller and Zlatan Krizan demonstrated walking yields happiness in a simple study of college students. They presented one set of students pictures of buildings on campus while seated indoors in a lab. They asked them to describe the aesthetic qualities of the buildings in the pictures and also their emotion state at the time. They then asked another set of students to walk around campus in search of those same buildings and had them record their aesthetic impressions and self-reported feelings.  What they found is represented in the title of their paper: “Walking facilitates positive affect”, and their second discovery is offered in parenthesis, “(even when expecting the opposite).” It turns out that even those students who dreaded the thought of walking around campus self-reported being happier having done it.This is a limited study with a small sample size, but longer range studies with significant populations have demonstrated positive mental health effects from walking. A 2017 study by public health researchers out of Australia tracked nearly 34,000 people over eleven years. They wanted to know what effects exercise has on preventing depression, how much intensity is required to have an effect, and what causes the effects. They found that just one hour a week of walking could prevent 12% of cases of onset depression by otherwise healthy adults. Imagine what walking an hour a day would do.COVID has drawn many people out of their house to walk. There hasn’t been much else to do. Some of these people may have even dreaded it. It’s possible this is one positive outcome of this pandemic. As frustrating as the lockdown has been, perhaps walking has prevented a sizable number of people from succumbing to sedentary induced depression. Our cities don’t make it easy to walk. A century of car culture has kept people from interacting with place. We can deduce from the research I’ve cited, that this is a bad thing. Not only do we have a biased and hazy image built in our minds of the environment in which we live, sitting in a car or a chair does not facilitate happy thoughts. We all succumb to what those Iowa State researchers referred to as the ‘dread effect’. It’s all too easy to tap that green square on Google maps, hit the ‘walking distance’ tab, shutter at the time and effort it would take to walk, and then grab the keys and drive there. But for the last year, I instead grabbed my headphones, took a step, and felt the cells in my brains come alive. I am interacting with place, with a smile on my face, as a cranial cellular symphony traces a map of the space.References: Shane O’Mara. In Praise of WalkingReginald G. Golledge;Robert J. Stimson. Host Ricky Sacks was joined by Jason McGovern and former Spurs defender Dean Austin as we interviewed another former Spurs player from that crazy 90's period. It is fair to say that Dean Austin isn’t a household name but the former defender was an important member of Tottenham Hotspur’s defence in the mid-nineties. After leaving Spurs in 1998 due to the emergence of Stephen Carr, Austin spent four seasons at Crystal Palace before finishing his career in 2003 with non-league side Woking. Upon retiring from playing, Austin went straight into coaching and spent a year with the youngsters at Watford’s academy before joining Farnborough Town as the club’s director of football. He was in the job for a matter of weeks before he was asked to take over the team as manager just two weeks before the start of the season. Unfortunately during Austin’s time at the club they endured a number of off-the-field problems and he left in February 2005. However, he wasn’t out of work for long and joined his former side Southend United in July 2005 as a coach and the club’s head of recruitment. He enjoyed three successful years at Roots Hall, helping the side to two successive promotions before leaving to join Brendan Rodgers as his assistant manager at Watford. Austin was on his travels once again in 2009 when Rodgers left Watford to join Reading but this appointment was short-lived and the entire management team left six months later. He then spent a year back at former side Crystal Palace as first team coach and under 21 manager and then a year at Bolton Wanderers as a regional scout before a very brief spell at Notts County as Chris Kiwomya‘s assistant manager. In January 2015 Austin re-joined Watford as head coach Slavisa Jokanovic’s assistant coach where he played an important role in getting them promoted to the Premier League. He stayed on at the club when Jokanovic left and spent the 2015-16 season working with Quique Sanchez Flores. He left in May 2016 upon the appointment of Italian manager Walter Mazzarri who brought in his own Italian backroom staff to assist him. Austin made a return to football in September 2017 when he joined Northampton Town as Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink‘s assistant manager and ended up taking over first-team affairs on a caretaker basis when the Dutchman was sacked. Although unable to save The Cobblers from relegation, the Northampton board appointed Austin as permanent manager for the 2018/19 season but his tenure was short-lived and he was sacked at the end of September after winning just one game. A year later he made a return to Watford for the fourth time when he linked up once again with Quique Sanchez Flores as his assistant manager. Unfortunately his time at Vicarage Road came to and end in December 2019 when Flores and his backroom staff were sacked. #THC #COYS #TOTTENHAM #HOTSPUR #TOTTENHAMHOTSPUR #SPURS

USC won its matchup against Fresno State, 31-23, Saturday night in the Coliseum, but lost the war as starting sophomore quarterback JT Daniels saw his season come to an end soon after it began. Daniels got off to a brilliant start and was 25 for 34 for 215 yards passing when he tried to retreat from a Bulldogs blitz and got folded up by the pressure. He tore the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his right knee, ending his night and ultimately his season on the Trojans' final offensive play of the first half. That meant USC had to turn to Kedon Slovis. It ran a very run-centric offense in the second half to take some pressure off of true freshman. Keely Eure and Shotgun Spratling return to the USCfootball.com studio with a new episode of the Family Feud Podcast to discuss how concerned Trojan fans should be about Slovis starting for the first time against Stanford and whether there may be more pressing things that USC has to take care of even before worrying about the success of Slovis. In this week's Stock Up/Stock Down segment, Keely and Shotgun have plenty of takeaways from the first game of the year. They look at the dynamic running back duo of Vavae Malepeai and Stephen Carr -- who combined for 190 yards rushing, more than 50 yards receiving and three touchdowns -- and the big men up front that helped paved the way for the rushing attack, including graduate transfer Drew Richmond. The Drakes are discussed as freshmen Drake London and Drake Jackson both earned starts in their collegiate debuts. The USCfootball.com duo also look at the positives and negatives from the tight end position. Keely frowns upon the message sent by the USC coaching staff when it delivers conflicting information to the media while Shotgun breaks down the issues the Trojans had on defense against edge-rushing plays, including the struggles of talented sophomore linebacker Palaie Gaoteote. After the first game, Keely and Shotgun have some notes from the sidelines of what they were able to observe and hear while covering the game and practices throughout the week, including Juliano Falaniko's attempt to stake claim for the Trojans like a 15th century explorer, the atmosphere in the Coliseum when safety Isaiah Pola-Mao sealed the game with an interception in the end zone and the demeanor of Slovis and Daniels on the sideline in the second half. In the Agree/Disagree portion of the podcast, Keely questions Shotgun about the how Stanford's defense may attack the Trojans with a true freshman behind center and how the USC defense can get better in a week. This episode of the Family Feud Podcast concludes with the questions that you emailed (familyfeudpod@gmail.com) and tweeted to us, including whether Tyler Vaughns' performance changed Shotgun's perception of the potential of "Stock Neutral," what might not have been revealed yet by offensive coordinator Graham Harrell, the length of Slovis' leash and what can the Trojans consider to be a good record for the season with a freshman at quarterback for the second year in a row. Keely and Shotgun are looking to feature your question on an upcoming episode. Send in your Stock Up/Stock Down contenders for debate, provide an Agree/Disagree statement or a question you want answered. Stephen Carr is a man of faith, lifetime learner, maritime lawyer and avid sailor. He also happens to be my dear father and I am delighted to share my conversation with my dad. The release date of this podcast, April 30th, 2018 is his 88th birthday! Steve is my eldest guest and I marvel at his long, rich life as he shares childhood memories, family history, his 4 years in the seminary and decision to leave, his appreciation of his education, first at St. Michael’s College/ University of Toronto, then at Georgetown University Law School, before landing a job at the law firm of Haight, Gardener, Poor and Haven. Dad embraces his Irish roots, love of the Clancy Brothers and John O’Donohue as well as other writers who stimulate and nourish him: Thomas Merton, Richard Rohr, Ernest Hemingway, Gregory Boyle. After retiring from his law firm, Dad kept up 20 years of legal consultation, volunteered in prisons, and to this day, stays active with walking, biking, sailing and pickleball (and he credits his wife, Vivian for helping him stay young). I’ve always loved how easily my dad cries, he is touched deeply by tender moments in life, and lets the tears flow. I know I may be a bit biased, because he is my Dad, but I think you, too, will enjoy Steve’s thoughtful, funny, sentimental life reflections.
