I decided to record this episode as a follow-up to Ep. 30 given how many questions and discussions I've heard from listeners. If you have not listened to Ep. 30 (link here), you should go back and listen as Cody Garrett joined me to talk about the challenge of psychologically going from "Saver to Spender" in retirement. However, many of the follow-up questions were about what tactical action items you could take to get comfortable with "spending" down your retirement nest egg. There are 7 potential tactics and philosophies you could adopt, but be sure to coordinate these concepts with a comprehensive financial plan. Here are some of the resources I referenced in the show: -The Retirement Planning Education Facebook Group - Changes in retirement spending behaviors over time (Michael Kitces article) - Bill Bengen's original 4% rule study - Immediate Annuity (SPIA) rates - IRS single life expectancy tables ***Just a note here, I meant to add that the "Required Minimum Distribution" is based on qualified tax-deferred accounts including IRAs, 401ks, 403bs, TSPs, etc. Roth IRAs are exempt, non-qualified brokerage accounts are exempt, AND Roth 401ks/403bs/TSPs will be exempt from RMDs beginning in 2024. - Ep. 14 from The Retirement Planning Podcast (Retirees - Stop Underspending in your Go-Go Years) -Using the Guardrail Withdrawal Strategy to Increase Retirement Income -Guyton and Klinger Guardrail Decision Rules If you are interested in working with me 1x1, visit my website: https://imaginefinancialsecurity.com/ You can email me directly at kevin@imaginefinancialsecurity.com I hope you enjoy this episode! -Kevin

Nonillion… That's a number so big, I hadn't heard it before recording this episode. Should you budget and track every single dollar you spend? Should you put 10 percent of your income into your 401k? These are just two of the typical questions I get asked when it comes to money management. In fact, when you think about the hundreds of decisions the average person is faced with in their financial journey, you end up with a nonillion different possible outcomes. This week I brought on Cody Garrett to make these decisions a little clearer. With dual degrees in music theory and contemporary piano performance, Cody shifted gears in 2018 to focus on his growing interest in finances. Having served as a music director for renowned Broadway shows to now, sharing actionable personal finance advice, Cody's journey is a testament to his drive and adaptability. Cody runs his firm that caters to DIY investors on the path of early retirement, and also educates over 1000 financial advisors, impacting the future of financial planning in a meaningful way. We've all heard the sales pitches! "Permanent life insurance solves all of your problems!" For those of you who have followed me for a period of time know I don't believe this to be true. But at the same time, there is a large % of the financial advisor (and talking heads) population that blanketly tells people, "Don't ever buy permanent life insurance." To me, this is a breach of fiduciary duty. Just because we all have our biases doesn't mean we should PUSH those biases on someone's personal financial situation. As my friend Cody Garrett likes to say, "Keep Finance Personal." Here is a link to the article I referenced in the show about "How to divide assets in a blended family." Here's a link to an episode from Andy Panko's podcast; Episode 77 - "Understanding cash value life insurance and how it's sold, with Kevin Lao." This could be a nice compliment to what we discussed today! I hope you enjoy it. Make sure to give the show a follow and leave us a review so we can reach more people and make a bigger impact! Kevin

Jeff takes the pod solo with his guest, Cody Garrett of Measure Twice Financial, who breaks down his “advice only” financial planning operation. They discuss the branding elements that go into providing paid financial advice for the anti-financial-adviser population. Cody lets us in on the success he has had advising these DIY investors, to the extent that he only works 10 hours per week. Guest Bio:Cody Garrett is an advice-only financial planner passionate about helping families refine their path to financial independence (FI) as DIY investors. As a Certified Financial Planner™ professional, Cody specialize in comprehensive financial plan development, topic research, and personalized financial education. Cody believe that truly comprehensive financial advice can provide the clarity and confidence necessary for families to implement their own well-informed decisions.
We're excited to welcome XYPN member Cody Garrett, CFP®, founder of Measure Twice Financial—an advice-only firm based in Houston, TX. After 10 years in the music industry, Cody jumped into a career in financial planning. As Cody learned about financial planning, he shared blogs to teach others at the same time. His generosity changed the trajectory of his career. Cody lasted two and a half years at an RIA before the floodgates opened. Dozens of clients started reaching out wanting planning advice—without investment management. After two months, he generated more revenue than an entire year. So, he made the decision to go solo. In this episode, Alan and Cody discuss the importance of empowering clients to get involved with their finances. Measure Twice Financial leads by example—simplifying financial topics to help DIY investors to align their money with their values. Cody built his firm from the ground up, finding his ideal client before choosing a service model and fee structure. His goal is to change the perception of a financial planner's role by increasing the transparency of planning. If you're interested in advice-only planning or are looking to align your professional goals and values, this episode is for you. On July 3, 1994, 21 year old Linda Gibson and her 4 year old half-brother Cody Garrett left their apartment to walk to the local convenience store. The siblings never returned home. Four days later their mother and step-father were driven to a vacant field at the edge town where the bodies of her two children were subsequently found. It has been nearly 28 years since this brutal double homicide rocked the small town of Somerset, KY and the family of these victims is stills searching for answers. ** In this episode, I inadvertently mispronounced the last name of the Somerset Sheriff Sam Catron. I only learned of this after recording the entire episode. I wanted to apologize for this error. In any future episodes this mistake will be corrected.**

Cody Garrett is the founder of Measure Twice Financial, an independent RIA based out of Houston which has managed to grow to nearly $150,000 per year in annualized financial planning fees in just over six months. Cody uses an “advice-only” financial planning model that has quickly attracted a waiting list of clients who want to do it themselves, but not necessarily learn it themselves. In this episode, Cody shares why he launched with the advice-only model, where clients don't have the option to have their investments managed by the firm, but do get personalized education that they can use to manage their own finances. Listen in to learn how this model has allowed Cody to build a practice that supports his own personal lifestyle and work no more than ten hours per week, as well as how he has generated a steady stream of clients and kept the business lean so he can take home more than 90% of his gross revenue after business expenses.
