"The gospel of sin management" is a phrase that was coined by Dallas Willard. For Joseph Lewis, that phrase perfectly encapsulates the way many people make being a Christian primarily about avoiding sin and following a set of rules. In this thought-provoking episode, Wes McAdams and Joseph Lewis expose the problems with reducing Christianity to mere moralism. They discuss how an obsessive focus on not sinning can paradoxically make us more likely to sin, as well as undermine the true meaning of the gospel. - First off, tell us about your journey to the role of the CISO. What did that look like, what steps did you take, what helped prepare you and so on?- To many, the CISO is considered the pinnacle of the cyber career field. How did it feel when you landed the role and looking back a year now, what are some thoughts that come to mind?- We know as you become more of a senior leader, you get less into the nuance and details of the technical activities and more focused on strategy, vision, organizational objectives and so on. Can you speak about balancing the technical expertise and experience with learning to better engage your business peers and fellow leaders across the organizations?- A key part of being a CISO is building and empowering the team around you to ensure security is successful. How do you approach building and leading a team as a CISO?- Something worth calling out is you aren't the CISO of a SMB of commercial product company, you're the CISO if a Federal agency. That comes with its own unique challenges, demands and complexity, from resources, requirements, compliance rigor and more. Can you speak a bit about the unique aspects of being a Federal CISO and how you've navigated those so far?- What are some of your biggest lessons learned, challenges and recommendations around being an effective leader? - For those aspiring to become a CISO, what resources and steps do you recommend?- Let's talk a bit about your current role and organization, many of course are interested to hear about that. What are some key strategic objectives you're focused on at CDC, to the extent you're able to speak about them publicly?

‘Tis the damn season. Last summer, we convened the Three Heathens--Paul, Arlo, and A/V writer-director Joseph Lewis--to discuss Taylor Swift’s first surprise album of 2020, Folklore. It was surprising not only for the nature of its release but for the folk pop/singer-songwriter shift it marked, becoming the finest achievement of Swift’s career. On her second surprise album of 2020, Evermore, she may have equaled that achievement. The Heathens are back to discuss the progression of Swift’s Joni Mitchell phase, as her lyrics become more reflective and complex. They’re strengthened by producer/co-writer Aaron Dessner’s sonic palette, introducing new sounds to Swift’s oeuvre. It’s true, the boys go a little off the rails into Lynch references, but one thing is undeniable: the more we say, the less you know. Plus, a discussion of the Disney+ making-of/concert film Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions.   NEXT: it’s Hawk the Slayer vs. The Adventures of Robin Hood in a Geek Challenge. Paul has also had to deal with a good deal of poop, even though his isn’t issuing forth from a screaming, squealing bundle of joy. In between all the poop talk, the boys squeeze out some pop culture talk: Arlo catches up with the new seasons of Ramy and PEN15; Paul gets TikTok’d; Arlo watches (and reads) You; and the boys commiserate about the bizarre, disappointing Wonder Woman 1984.   NEXT: ‘tis the damn season. A global pandemic. Britain leaving the European Union. Donald Trump being elected president. FX canceling Terriers after one goddamn season. It has been, without question, the dumbest decade. Add to that list the strange, mystifying endurance of Gobbledygeek. A podcast hosted by two straight cis white male idiots, ostensibly devoted to the discussion of “popular culture,” and listened to by only a small handful of reprobates, has somehow lasted ten years and 400 episodes. Many other, arguably better podcasts have come and gone. But Paul and Arlo are still here, joined by original Gobbler and fellow Heathen Joseph Lewis, to reminisce about their extraordinarily humble beginnings. The gang listened back to their very first episode (now available to cringe through for the first time in years!) before recording, and they revisit those long-forgotten topics in the year of our lord 2020. Do they remember anything about Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland? Does the Lost finale hold up? Do they give even a single shit about “fandom” anymore? All that PLUS they commiserate about our COVID-infected present and reenact a scene from a truly insane screenplay Joe wrote when he was 15. Out of the Past: Investigating Film Noir

What good is it to be a sharpshooter when there's no war on? If you want to understand the sense of impotence and angst that defined the postwar generation, "Gun Crazy" is a case study. With a deft and almost whimsical touch, Joseph Lewis sketches a country in transition--uncertain whether to gratify its thirst for heroism or its hunger for things, big things, lots of things. The film also signals a dramatic transition in filmmaking. In a giant stride, it seems to have one foot in the silent film era (think Murnau's "Sunrise") and the other in the New Wave (think Godard's "Breathless"). A must-see for anyone wanting to understand the evolution of noir. This podcast is brought to you by Clute and Edwards of www.noircast.net.
