In this episode, we explore the critical roles of the enteric nervous system (ENS) and the vagus nerve in digestion and gut motility. We also examine how autonomic nervous system dysfunction can contribute to conditions such as Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). Topics: 1. Introduction to the Nervous System and Its Role in Digestion - Overview of the enteric nervous system (ENS) and vagus nerve - Focus on location, function, and associated dysfunctions 2. Overview of the Enteric Nervous System (ENS) - ENS as one of the three divisions (Sympathetic, Parasympathetic, Enteric) - Location and function overview 3. The Mucosa - Structure and Function of the Mucosa - Epithelium (cells such as enterocytes, goblet cells, enteroendocrine cells) - Lamina propria (loose connective tissue, immune cells) - Smooth muscle layer 4. The Submucosa - Structure and Function of the Submucosa - Thicker connective tissue providing support for blood vessels, lymphatics, and nerves 5. The Submucosal Plexus (Part of the ENS) - Location and Functions of the Submucosal Plexus - Regulation of digestive enzyme secretion, mucin production, and electrolyte balance - Role in creating protective mucus barriers and controlling local blood flow 6. Mucus Secretion and Protection - Role of Goblet Cells - Secretion of mucins and formation of the protective mucus layer 7. Blood Flow Regulation by the Submucosal Plexus - Role in adjusting blood supply during digestion 8. Neuronal Cells of the Submucosal Plexus - Sensory Neurons: Detecting changes in the gut - Interneurons: Processing and integrating sensory input - Secretomotor Neurons 9. Communication Between Neurons and Epithelial Cells - Chemical Signaling and Neurotransmitters - ACh and Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) - Serotonin's role in activating sensory neurons and regulating secretion 10. Role of the Vagus Nerve in Digestive Regulation - Vagus Nerve as Part of the ANS - Regulation of digestive secretions, gut motility, and smooth muscle contractions 11. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:    Anonymous: Hi, I've listened to lots of your podcasts on oils, which are ok to cook with, which shouldn't be heated. I posted a comment about it online & got a lot of heat from someone saying seed oils are not unhealthy... they sent me 30 PubMed research done on people (not animals) also concluding they are not so bad, especially sunflower oil. Their explanation: Heating won't be an issue. Canola, sunflower and rapeseed have some of the highest smoke points (400-450 F), yes they produce polar compounds when overheated, but the lesson there is to simply not overheat them. On a household stove, this really isn't a problem. As for the whole processing thing, doesn't matter either. During the refining process, seed oils are heated to a temp that drives off volatile compounds (steam distillation, it drives off aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, short chain fatty acids), which makes the oils MORE stable. That's why refined oils have higher smoke points and a longer shelf life than their unrefined counterparts. And that temp that the oils are heated to is lower than the temp necessary to oxidize the oil. As for hexane, we've been using since the 30s, and there's no evidence to substantiate any risk/danger to our health when trace amounts are ingested. Refined oils extracted with hexane contain < 1 ppm of residual hexane. Filling your car with gas or using quick-drying glues give you loads more. Seed oils being dangerous is an unfounded and Seed oils being dangerous is an unfounded and insanely pervasive myth in nutrition, and it leads people to have food phobias and reach for tallow and butter (WAY worse, for a variety of reasons). This is what they said, a registered dietitian, citing 30 PubMed studies and when I wanted to send them your research from your shownotes, I couldn't find anything on this scale.. could you please link the research you cite so we can actually substantiate why seed oils are unhealthy to cook with and which? Is sunflower oil ok to consume when unheated and organic? Thank you for being amazing!      Anonymous: Hi Dr Cabral, I recently heard that taking laxatives for over a year can cause nerve damage to parts of the GI. I wanted to ask if Magnesium also carries this risk, particularly oxygenated magnesium like Oxypowder or Mag07? Ive been taking Oxygenated Magnesium everyday since 2020 as its helpful and I seem to have some difficulty going without that. I had a hyperparathyroidectomy for hyperparathyroidism in July 2023. I believe my motility or peristalsis was impacted since atleast 2020, as such a disease can take years to manifest. I find that my motility has improved some since, but not enough for me to discontinue the Magnesium. I often times combine 2 capsules Oxypowder with 1 capsule of Equilifes Full Spectrum Magnsium every night. Even with this, I often times do not get complete evac.     Lee: Hi Dr C. Im male an I often times get what feels like hotflashes almost immediately after eating. It feels like the body wants to get rid of whatever I just ate, right away. My Testosterone levels are at over 700 when I had them checked, so I dont think its low T. It seems like a histamine response thats often accompanied my heart burn and upper GI pain and discomfort. I do take quercetin and histapro, but I might only get relief from the hotflashes for short time. When I press against my stomach (right below the sternum) and take deep breaths, I can make my stomach gurgle. Its pretty loud and can do it consistently. Is that normal? Sometimes I get a bit of pain relief doing this, but it may only last a few seconds before the usual discomfort returns. This discomfort is there 24/7. Thanks       Lara: Hi, I noticed you listed Wholetones in your resources page as your Binaural Beats go-to.. I understood that you need to listen to those over headphones for best results but Wholetones offers speakers with prerecorded music in specific frequencies.. could you please explain how it works and if it is better with this speaker or over headphones? Also, can you provide any free binaural beats resources that work? I would think probably not from youtube, but I could be wrong? Thank you for your explanation and help, you're amazing!     Anonymous: Hello, I've always had achy teeth, receding gums & lots of problems. Now it looks like my enamel has “chipped off” on the tops of the teeth, next to the gums - before you could just see some of the roots because of the receding gums but now there's a lot of it and it's darker than the rest of the teeth (I eat a lot of blueberries). I don't remember if you ever said whether electric toothbrushes are ok or not and what would you recommend for this problem? Talking about pooping is a total taboo, but it's an important topic.   The prevalence of GI disorders such as diarrhea, constipation, and alternating diarrhea and constipation is extremely common, with 3-5% of the U.S. population experiencing chronic diarrhea. Globally, 16% of adults experience chronic constipation - up to 19% of adults in the U.S. and a whopping 33% of adults over the age of 60 experience chronic constipation.   Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) with Alternating Diarrhea and Constipation, characterized by symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and variability in bowel habits, affect 10-15% of the global population. Among those with IBS, a significant portion (around 25-30%) experiences alternating diarrhea and constipation (IBS-M, mixed type). *Mehta, S. Why a balance of the two is crucial for healthy digestion 11:58 What an excess sympathetic state looks like vs prolonged parasympathetic state; why both should be balanced before or alongside supplementation / diet changes  13:40 Specific nerves of the PNS: the vagus nerve and pelvic (splanchnic nerves); how tech neck, neck tension/restriction could impact these nerves and in turn digestion 16:05 Why hip and pelvic dysfunction can disturb these nerves 17:25- Why the "fusebox" of the body should never be ignored when systems functions go awry! Would you buy all new light bulbs before checking the source of power?  controls all of our organs functions: the spine.  18:24- Recognizing the brain gut connection (& why its legit!); vicious cycle of stress on digestion 19:54- Heightened stress states; what they tell us and what they don't have to 23:40- At home tips we give to patients with IBS symptoms 25:03- Children's digestion— potty training, constipation, the potential emotional stress or physical anatomical stress involved 26:20- Working all along the spine in different ways- utilizing inhibition and stimulation along the spine, the sympathetic nervous system's means of communication along the spine and ribs in our mid back 29:08- Commonly diagnosed spinal issues (herniated discs, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis) and how they can be affecting your digestion more than you knew 32:50- Our tips on movements and hands on assessment post meal and in times of digestive upset, working to stimulate the vagus nerve via breath work, and inhibit sympathetic nerves energetically with mindfulness and expansion through the mid spine and body And finally, how we can help balance our body's pressure gradients We're passionate about showcasing Osteopathy as an integral part of healthcare. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   Sally: Hi doctor Cabral, what are your to tips for treating slow gut motility? My meals digest super slowly, even if I leave 4-5 hours between them, and it causes uncomfortable bloating. Thanks so much for your answer, really appreciate it!   Anonmous: Hi Dr Cabral, it seems that I am having a severe form of gerd. For about 3 years Ive had a persistent gnawing , sometimes burning pain around my sternum area so bad that i believe my vagus nerve has become inflamed. I occasionally get brain zap sensations akin to ssri withdraw, which may be due to vague nerve inflammation, but not sure. Anyway, it seems im finding relief for the first time using US based gaviscon. Im switching to UK based as US has aluminum, but the relief has been incredible. The UK ingredients are sodium alginate and pottasium hydrogen carbonate. What do you think of this medication for long term? I have tried many other natural solutions including healthy belly but it seems that this medication is giving life altering relief so far. Thanks   Nana: Hi Dr. Cabral and team! I recently realized i have parasites and i am taking plant paradox protocol. So scared they will come back. Whats the best way to prevent another parasitic infection? Also, i am sensitive to lectins but heard fermentation reduces lectin content. If i make fermented milk with A1 milk instead of A2 milk, would it still have lectins? Finding conflicting information online.   Elsa: What are your thoughts on heated/electric blankets? I get cold easily and use it nearly every night to help me fall asleep. I also have anxiety and the heat helps calm me in anxious moments. The blanket I use is low EMF and turns off after 2 hours but I still can’t help but worry that this may have long term risks if using every night. Would love your feedback, thanks!   Jamie: Dr. Cabral. Love your work. Changed my life! Also loving HPH. On a recent podcast you indicated that you are supplementing with Berberine and mentioned all of the benefits. My question is, is there any concern with Berberine suppressing muscle protein synthesis when taken on a regular basis?   Thank you for tuning into this weekend's Cabral HouseCalls and be sure to check back tomorrow for our Mindset & Motivation Monday show to get your week started off right! - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/2977 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept? Everyone always wants to know what caused their Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), but often you can't know for sure. This episode aims to provide clarity amidst the confusion.IBS - A biopsychosocial condition influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors.Post-infectious IBS emerges as a common trigger, often following a bout of gastroenteritis or food poisoning, disrupting intestinal barriers and triggering chronic inflammation.Motility issues play a significant role, with slow movement leading to bacterial overgrowth and constipation, while fast motility causes diarrhoea.Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is highlighted as a treatable cause, affecting a substantial portion of IBS sufferers.Additionally, improper digestion of certain foods, especially fermentable fibres, and the intricate gut-brain connection are explored as key contributors. The gut-brain connection and how this can impact your digestionUseful episodes Tracking your symptoms for IBS - Ep 6SIBO - Ep 11, 12 and 31Gut-brain connection - Ep 4Work with meGroup Gut Reset - https://www.goodnessme-nutrition.com/group-course-ibsc/1:1 Gut Reset - https://www.goodnessme-nutrition.com/consultations/Ready for your gut reset?

In this episode, I discuss the mechanisms by which human eggs and sperm are generated, the ovulatory/menstrual cycle, the conception process and overall fertility in males and females. I also explain how, regardless of whether you seek to conceive children, optimizing egg and sperm health is directly related to vitality and longevity. I cover the nutrition-based, behavioral, supplement-based and prescription approaches to optimizing egg and sperm health, the ovulatory/menstrual cycle and fertility. In addition, I explain lifestyle choices that greatly assist or harm fertility—several of which are very surprising. I provide science-based protocols for those trying to conceive children. The tools and principles I discuss can also improve overall vitality and longevity in all people, regardless of age.  For the full show notes, visit hubermanlab.com. Have had since I was a child. Presented as red, itchy bumps on legs and back and as flaky and itchy red patches in creases of elbows mostly during summer)Started having Increased flares starting in summer of 2020 with itchy bumps and red patches covering most of body. Additionally, developed new type of severe eczema on my face, neck, hairline that had never occurred before. Before this, had never had any eczema on my face. Flares got increasingly worse over the next ~6 months.Dermatologist gave 10 day taper of oral prednisone and topical steroids to help "heal eczema (Jan 2021) and then started on Dupixent (injections every other week). Stopped injections in Feb 2022.After stopping injections had small amount of eczema on body, only small itchy bumps, nothing on face.  Face had another severe flare in July-August 2022 requiring topical steroids to heal again.Additionally, only have 3-4 BMs per week. Do not use any stool softeners/laxative. (but uses motility support!)Feeling very fatigued in the afternoons, trouble getting out of bed in the mornings for a long time. New issues of waking up in the middle of the night and occasional muscle cramping.Saw functional MD who did blood work and Gut Zoomer stool test (Vibrant wellness).Stool test with gut commensals high for leaky gut, moderate for SIBO and other categories.
