al-Mugheera Ibn Shu'ba رضي الله عنه (S13) al-Mugheera رضي الله عنه narrates: “The Messenger ﷺ performed wudhu and wiped over his Jawrabayn and his sandles”. This Hadith is the only ‘Sahih' report regarding the wiping over normal socks. However, the shuyukh, such as Imam Ahmed, Sufyan at-Thawri (r.h) have stated this Hadith is infact weak. This is due to 2 narrators in the Hadith chain who used the word ‘Jawrabayn' I.e normal socks, but the Hadith mentions ‘Huff' I.e leather socks. Thus it is agreed that one can only wipe over leather socks, and not normal socks as we see today. Hasan al-Basri (r.h): “70 companions رضي الله عنهم told me that The Messenger ﷺ wiped over leather socks”. One cannot wipe over leather socks if a bath is needed - wiping can only be done for wudhu. Mugheera رضي الله عنه elucidated that it is sunnah to wipe over the right foot with the right hand, and wipe over the left foot with the left hand. The Messenger ﷺ recieved leather socks [Huff] as a gift from Negus (r.h).

For two decades he was a chief antagonist of the Prophet ﷺ, only to be forgiven and given a position of leadership for the sake of the greater cause.

He was the first cousin of the Prophet ﷺ, and his brother in that he was nursed by the same woman. He was one of the closest and most beloved people to him. When Islam came, he turned his back on the Prophet ﷺ and became a bitter enemy until the very end where after a painful reunification, came a beautiful ending.

Abu Sufyan—bukan Abu Sufyan bin Harb, ayah Muawiyah—adalah sepupu Rasulullah SAW. Ayahnya, Harits bin Abdul Muthalib, adalah saudara Abdullah, ayah Nabi Muhammad. Hubungan keduanya menjadi semakin erat karena mereka disusui oleh Halimah Sa'diyah secara bersamaan. Mereka pun menjadi dua sahabat bermain yang saling mengasihi satu sama lain. Karena hubungan yang demikian erat tersebut, maka kebanyakan orang menyangka Abu Sufyanlah yang akan paling dahulu menyambut seruan Rasulullah SAW, dan dialah yang paling cepat memercayai serta mematuhi ajarannya dengan setia. Namun kenyataannya tidak. Bahkan sebaliknya, justru ketika Rasulullah mulai menyampaikan dakwah di kalangan kerabatnya secara sembunyi-sembunyi, api kebencian menyala di hati Abu Sufyan. We look at new writing from Syria and about the experiences of Syrian refugees, including Ramy Al-Asheq's Ever Since I Did Not Die, a book he categorizes not as poetry or prose but as “pieces of my body, haphazardly brought together in a paper bag.” Show Notes Ramy Al-Asheq's Ever Since I Did Not Die was translated by Isis Nusair and edited by Levi Thompson. Samar Yazbek's Planet of Clay was translated by Leri Price and is on the shortlist for this year's National Book Award, in the Translation category. Rabih Alameddine's The Wrong End of the Telescopefollows a Lebanese-American trans woman's journey to the Moria refugee camp on Lesbos, Greece. Haya Saleh's Wild Poppieswon the 2020 Etisalat Award for Arabic Children's Literature in the YA category and follows two young Syrian boys, Omar and Sufyan, as they struggle to come-of-age during wartime. We finished on a reading of an untitled poem by Ramy Al-Asheq, published in Transference, translated by Levi Thompson.

It is one of the sharper ironies of Islamic history that the clan which had led the resistance to the young religion went on to found its first dynasty. Umayyad influence swelled under the third caliph, but Mu'awiya was the one to formalize it as the foundation of a dynasty. The first few years of his reign were dedicated to securing his grip on the umma, and he embedded his clan and loyalists in a way that transformed the caliphate.
