In 1969, the Harlem Cultural Festival was a joyous celebration of Black culture, music and Harlem, in a time of so much societal shift. Despite how powerful this festival was, for decades, it was erased. The 2021 documentary Summer of Soul (...or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) brought this restored footage to public.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The past few months have seen a series of bold proclamations from the most powerful people in tech.In September, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta had developed “the most advanced glasses the world had ever seen.” That same day, Open AI CEO Sam Altman predicted we could have artificial super intelligence within a couple of years. Elon Musk has said he'll land rockets on Mars by 2026.We appear to be living through the kinds of technological leaps we used to only dream about. But whose dreams were those, exactly? In her latest book, Imagination: A Manifesto, Ruha Benjamin argues that our collective imagination has been monopolized by the Zuckerbergs and Musks of the world. Indy reviews Summer of Soul, the documentary by Questlove that recounts the influential but largely forgotten 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, Samantha suggests Jennifer Weiner's That Summer as your next summer beach read, and then we preview next week's big watch: The Talented Mr. Ripley! Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) is a 2021 American independent documentary film about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, directed by Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson in his directorial debut.[5] It had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on January 28, 2021, where it won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the documentary categories. It had a limited theatrical release in the U.S. by Searchlight Pictures on June 25, 2021, before expanding and being released for streaming on Hulu the next weekend. That Summer by Jennifer Weiner: Daisy Shoemaker can't sleep. With a thriving cooking business, full schedule of volunteer work, and a beautiful home in the Philadelphia suburbs, she should be content. But her teenage daughter can be a handful; her husband can be distant, her work can feel trivial, and she has lots of acquaintances, but no real friends. Still, Daisy knows she's got it good. So why is she up all night? I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa

When Mark Kermode, feminist ally of Girls On Film, and one of the UK's top film critics, expressed a wish to come on the Girls On Film podcast, Anna Smith asked listeners in an online poll which recent films they would like the two of them to discuss on the show. They discuss two recent films, beginning with a Don't Worry Darling review. **SPOILER ALERT** from 11:01 they move into spoiler territory, so skip to 18:36 if you'd like to avoid that. They then discuss The Woman King, as well as the winner of the Sight and Sound poll of the top 100 films of all time, Jeanne Dielman; why awards matter, the sense and nonsense of making lists of favourite films, and whether the film industry is making advances where gender parity is concerned. Mark Kermode is film critic for The Observer, co-presenter of BBC Radio 4's Screenshot alongside Ellen E Jones, host of his own film music programme on Scala Radio, and co-presenter of Kermode and Mayo's Take podcast. Don't Worry Darling is available on all the usual platforms in the UK. The Woman King will be available on digital January 30th and on DVD February 13th 2023. Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du commerce, 1080 Bruxelles is available to stream on BFI Player in The Sight and Sound Greatest Films of All Time collection on BFI Player – which now includes over 50 titles from the top 100 to rent or for subscribers. Hey film buds,Summer is a unique time of year. It conjures up both the excitement of possibility and the nostalgia of Summers-past. And though we all have different ways of enjoying it, we all feel that Summer call to shed layers and run out into the heat. Though it is certainly fun to experience that Summer feeling in the fantastical films of Jaws or Do the Right Thing, we thought it could be just as fun to experience something grounded in reality with two documentary films. Introduction - 00:00Opening ChatSummer SeasonFirst is one of the most iconic films in documentary and sporting history; The Endless Summer. It was a labor of love, working in an old-fashioned documentary form, and it is often credited with being the film that made surfing mainstream. We'll discuss the history of surfing, how it evokes that Summer feeling, and surfing in movies overall. The Endless Summer - 13:04History of Surfing Review and DiscussionOur second film is one that recently won the Oscar for Best Documentary. Questlove's Summer of Soul is a concert movie event that captures the power, fun, and energy of a moment forgotten to time. We'll discuss how documentaries changed, why concert movies do or don't work, and more. Ken and Carla celebrate the first day of the month, April Fool's Day. The Oscars are still the buzz as the nation processes Will Smith's assault on Chris Rock, before Hollywood's glitterati and millions of views. Lost in the fray was the Oscar-winning documentary, Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised). Ken and Carla celebrate the music from 1969 that dominated the charts while Woodstock got all the attention. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife Ginni Thomas made the headlines - calling for recusals, open testimony and full disclosure. Florida legislation is also causing controversy as Governor Ron DeSantis seeks to eclipse the influence of the former president, employing his tactics. Carla closes with an inspiring moment from Sunday morning.Become a Patron: www.patreon.com/beachedwhitemaleEpisode 184Support the show (http://thebeachedwhitemale.com)
The 94th annual Oscars ceremony took place Sunday night and...it was pretty boring. We really had to scrape for content because the show was so anticlimactic. Clearly kidding. So many firsts- from CODA winning best picture to Megan Thee Stallion's performance. Hilarious commentary and skits from this year's hosts, Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall and Amy Schumer. And, of course, what is sure to be one of the most talked about moments in Oscar history. Also, s/o to Questlove for winning Best Original Documentary for "Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)." Forgot to mention this during the episode but gotta give him his flowers!

Research shows that the way people change their minds about ideas and the way they shift their worldview to include others is through stories and relationships - not shame or statistics. In service to that idea, we run a series on YouTube called ‘Welcome to My World'. It's an interview show where I get to talk to fascinating folks from all walks of life twice a week about something in their lives the rest of us should know more about. The summer of 1969 was an extraordinary time- the Stonewall riots ignited the modern LGBTQ rights movement, astronauts landed on the moon, Woodstock shaped the anti-war movement and for Black folks in Harlem, it was the Summer of Soul. The Harlem Cultural Festival was a five week musical event featuring the top Black musicians of the time and was sponsored by the City of New York to quell social unrest surrounding the anniversary of the assasination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr..Although the Harlem Cultural Festival was jam packed: Stevie Wonder, Mahalia Jackson, Nina Simone, The 5th Dimension, The Staple Singers, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Blinky Williams, Sly and the Family Stone and the Chambers Brothers, (and so many other legends) it was mostly forgotten until footage of the event was discovered and released in the the new documentary directed by Questlove, Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised).WATCH SUMMER OF SOUL: https://www.searchlightpictures.com/summerofsoul/ERTHE ST JAMES: https://www.instagram.com/erthestjamesToday musician Erthe St. James, who is highly influenced by Nina Simone and the music of this era joins us to look at the impact these artists from Summer of Soul have had on music and Civil Rights.Listen as we chat with Erthe St. James about the wonderful music featured in the documentary and what the world would be like if the footage of the festival was widely seen at the time?
You want more, divas? Well, she's back, the High Priestess of Soul..and she's talking about Nina Simone! (badum tish) That's right, we're graced once again by the fabulosity of the wondrous Bella Heesom and picking up where we left off at the beginning of the fame years for Miss Simone. We cover Nina's tireless work in the civil rights movement, her terrible marriage to all-round shitbag, Peter Stroud, and the tragic slide into mental health difficulties. Trigger warning, there is some pretty real stuff in this episode, which covers physical, sexual and mental abuse. However, we try to keep things as light as we can along the way, covering such topics as a Tellytubby Reboot, the little song Tom's Casio used to play and the awkward outcomes of not listening to lyrics. To know where we are going...it's important to know where we have been...On this installment of the 'Critic's Corner' we sit down with my sifu and find some current gems that either currently or ABOUT to hit the streaming and VOD tree.Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) takes us to 1969, during the same summer as Woodstock, a different music festival took place 100 miles away. More than 300,000 people attended the summer concert series known as the Harlem Cultural Festival. It was filmed, but after that summer, the footage sat in a basement for 50 years. It has never been seen. Until now. Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain is not a story about where you go. It's about what you leave behind . . . Chef, writer, adventurer, provocateur: Anthony Bourdain lived his life unabashedly. Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain is an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at how an anonymous chef became a world-renowned cultural icon. Two POWERHOUSE documentaries that are streaming on Disney+ and playing in theatres (but coming imminently to PVOD) are more then worth your time and we talk about the joys of really diving into things like this on streaming services which is really the value that all these services truly have out there...to go and find the stuff you just won't catch on the big screen.

In the summer of 1969, an African-American music and cultural festival took place in New York City that, unfortunately, faded into obscurity and was nearly forgotten for 50 years. Now, however, that event has been brilliantly brought back to life in the entertaining and uplifting new documentary, "Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)."

In the summer of 1969, hundreds of thousands of fans flooded Harlem's Mount Morris Park to attend the Harlem Cultural Festival, which hosted the likes of Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Mahalia Jackson, and Sly And The Family Stone. Now, some of that footage is unearthed in a new documentary, directed by Questlove from The Roots, titled Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised).
"Summer of Soul (...or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)" taps into a rich musical archive that went unseen for 50 years capturing the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. Filmmaker Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson celebrates the Black performers who took the stage.
August 1969 was when Woodstock took place. It was a huge and very well-known music event. However, there was another very large music event that started July 29, 1969 and went through the end of August 1969. It happened each Sunday (except the 4th of July weekend) and happened about 100 miles southeast of Woodstock, in Harlem, New York But, it wasn't nearly as well-known…. although that may be about to change. A documentary is being released July 2nd, 2021 in theaters and streaming, titled Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), a feature documentary about the Harlem Cultural Festival. It is the directorial debut of Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, of the band The Roots and the former leader of The Night Show band. On this show, I'll give you a sneak peak of the line up of the artists from the festival and the sort of music they play. We'll share some details about the festival. I'll also share some videos of this artists, not from the documentary – I wish I had those to share, on https://www.facebook.com/sexymusicafterdark. I'll also share some additional article and interview links that I found and some previews from the documentary. (I cannot archive the music for copyright reasons, but all videos of the music will be shared on the Facebook page shared above so the songs can be heard and most have performances by the artists.) The content that I shared during the show is contained here and I left 10 second spots where the songs were played. Videos of all the songs are posted here https://www.facebook.com/sexymusicafterdark/posts/2601887663438665. I also posted some additional images and additional links for things I found interesting.
This week on the Julie Says So MOVIE MINUTE, we go over the F9 weekend box-office (Vin Diesel was RIGHT!) and I share my thoughts on Questlove's directorial debut, "Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised). I also talked to Mark Walters & Devin Pike from The Big Film Show, who had lots to say about Chris Pratt's new film The Tomorrow World and his future with Marvel. We also discussed "Cancel-Culture" (a term none of us are fans of) and how it reflects society's own underlying views. Remember to find more movie news and reviews at JulieSaysSo.com!
