Ted Simmons was one of the MLB's greatest catchers.  Two games with the St Louis Cardinals in 1968 started his career in the game, but after a year in AAA his natural debut came in 1970. When he retired after 21 years in the majors, he held the catcher records for 2,472 career hits (with 483 doubles), ranked second for RBIs with 1389 runs, and 10th for home runs with 248 out of the park. Throw in seven years batting over .300, and catching two no-hitters with the Cardinals, and you get an idea of how much confidence he gave to his pitchers. We're going to pick up his career in 1971, with Simmons now established as the starting catcher for the Cardinals. On the mound is another legend, pitcher Bob Gibson. What magic can they produce as they visit the Pittsburg Pirates? Jack Buck is behind the KMOX microphone. You can find the boxscore here: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/PIT/PIT197108140.shtml This game was played on August 14th, 1971. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classicbaseballradio/message

From his younger days of excelling in three sports, and being offered scholarships to two of them, to his rise through the ranks at Kent State University, to his eventual journey that would lead him to righting the New York Yankees ship, that had taken on water while under the ownerships of the CBS Television Network. We cover his timultuous relationships with The Boss George Stienbrenner, Reggie Jackson and Carlton Fisk, as well as the tragic end of the Yankees first on-field Captain since Lou Gehrig in the 1920's.   December 12, 1941 – Future Hall of Famer Arky Vaughan is traded by the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Bucs receive four players in return, catcher “Hot Potato” Hamlin, Pete Coscarart, Babe Phelps and Jimmy Wasdell.   Shifted to third base by the Dodgers, Vaughan had an off year in 1942, batting just .277, to finish under .300 for the first time in his career.  However, he rebounded in 1943, batting .305 and leading the National League with 112 runs scored and a career-high 20 stolen bases.   December 12, 1954 – Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente lead the North to victory in the Puerto Rican Winter League's annual All-Star fundraiser. The Sporting News correspondent, Pita Alvarez De La Vega, gives the exuberant young duo's exploits some national exposure: “The league took a break from its pennant battle to stage the annual ‘Three Kings' all-star game at Mayaguez. All proceeds went into a YMCA fund to buy gifts for the island's poor children in keeping with the old Latin tradition of the Three Kings bringing gifts on January 6… The All-Star North team, made up of players from the Santurce and Mayaguez clubs, won the game, 7 to 5. Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente hit home runs for the winners.”   December 12, 1969 — Cleveland trades pitchers Luis Tiant and Stan Williams to the Twins for 3B Graig Nettles, OF Ted Uhlaender, and pitchers Dean Chance and Bob Miller. Tiant posted a 9-20 record with a 3.71 ERA in 1969. However, his strikeout-to-walk ratio completely tanked, leading to suspicions that he was pitching hurt. He pitched very well at the start of the 1970 season. Tiant was 6-0 with a 3.12 ERA by the end of May, which was followed by him going on the disabled list with arm troubles. He came back in early August, but only won one more game the rest of the way, and then gave up a run in two-thirds of an inning in a relief appearance when Minnesota was swept by the Baltimore Orioles in the 1970 ALCS. Born on December 12, 1950 in Charleston, SC. Gorman Thomas A big, lumberjack-like slugger, Thomas was a premier outfielder until undergoing rotator-cuff surgery in 1984. He was the first player ever picked by the Seattle Pilots in the June 1969 draft. A two-time minor league home run champion, Thomas' frequent strikeouts and low batting average kept him from a steady major league job until 1978. The strikeouts continued (478 from 1978 to 1980), but his homers increased. Thomas led the league in home runs with 45 in 1979 and 39 in 1982. He also drove in 100 runs three times and finished in top 10 for MVP voting twice in four years.   Defensively, Thomas had fine range and never feared the fences. A controversial trade, disastrous for Milwaukee, sent Thomas to Cleveland in 1983 that marked the end of the Brewers as a dominant power in the AL East, Thomas was traded to the Cleveland Indians on June 5, 1983, with pitchers Ernie Camacho and Jamie Easterly, in return for OF Rick Manning and pitcher Rick Waits. Manning was everything Thomas wasn't: a slick defensive center fielder with superficially impressive batting averages but no power. Thomas was all about massive power, low batting averages, and only passable defense, which was in steep decline as he was aging. Thomas had a rough start to his season, and was hitting below .200 with only five homers; he had played poorly in the 1982 Postseason as well, going a combined 4 for 41 with one long ball as the Brewers came within one game of being World Champions. So there was concern that Thomas was done as a player. He turned things around somewhat with the Indians, connecting for 17 homers with a .221 average in 106 games the rest of the way, while Manning and Waits brought little to the table for the Brewers. At Seattle, Thomas made a brilliant comeback in 1985 but became relegated to DH and first base duty and he will retire in 1986, with 268 career home runs. December 12, 1980 – The St. Louis Cardinals send pitchers Rollie Fingers and Pete Vuckovich, as well as catcher Ted Simmons to the Milwaukee Brewers for outfielder Sixto Lezcano, pitcher Lary Sorensen, and two minor leaguers. The trade will benefit the Brewers; Fingers will win the Cy Young award and MVP award in 1981 and Vuckovich will garner the same honor in 1982. A year later on December 10, 1981, Sixto Lezcano and Garry Templeton were traded by the St. Louis Cardinals to the San Diego Padres for Steve Mura and Ozzie Smith. In 400-plus episodes of The Dale Jr. Download, guests have brought a lot of Earnhardt stories to the table. But on this week's edition the mold has been broken as Dale Earnhardt Jr. and co-host Mike Davis welcome longtime MLB player, coach and team manager Ned Yost. After being drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1974 and playing in the majors for a handful of years, Ned retired during the ‘85 season. When he was at home in Mississippi figuring out his next move in life, he received a call from the Hank Aaron that would change the trajectory of his life forever, inviting him to be a coach for the upcoming pitching prospects of the Atlanta Braves. It was during his time with the Braves organization that he first made the acquaintance of Dale Earnhardt Sr. Ned and friend Jody Davis had made plans to go deer hunting and Davis invited Dale Sr. to come along. Ned and Dale Sr. became fast friends, bonding over their love of hunting and the outdoors and Ned would become a confidant for the Intimidator for years to come.Dale Jr. and Mike pick Ned's brain about the transition from being a player to a coach, and he explains about how his time with Ted Simmons on the Brewers helped teach him the nuts and bolts of the game. When it came time for Ned to try his hand at team management, he leaned on his experiences of working with Bobby Cox, longtime manager of the Braves. And when he needed to turn a losing organization into a winning one, he depended on the lessons he learned from a brief stint of working on Dale Sr.'s race team in ‘94.Ned recalls the instance that occurred during the ‘94 MLB strike, where Dale Sr. invited him to come on the road with his Richard Childress Racing No. 3 team as they chased their seventh championship. While Ned merely worked as a “rehydration engineer”, he gained first person insight into what it takes to win at the highest level. The education came in handy as he went on to win his first World Series title with the Braves the following year as a bullpen coach.Another lesson that Dale Sr. instilled in Ned was that you never leave a winning team for a losing one. Ned explains that during a hunting trip in Texas, Dale Sr. was talking about his ongoing contract negotiations for the following season. When Ned suggested that he drive for his own start-up D.E.I., Dale Sr. explained that they weren't ready to win yet. Ned pondered eventually having to leave the Braves to get his shot at managing a major league team and Dale Sr. implored him to stay put, explaining that winning is everything. The time came for Ned to leave in 2002 when he was made team manager of the Brewers. Ned breaks down the time it takes for a young organization to grow confident in their ability and start winning consistently, about a two-and-a-half-year process. Unfortunately, he was let go by Milwaukee before this concept came to fruition, but he found another opportunity to prove the system when he became manager of the Kansas City Royals in 2010. Ned would have the last laugh, as the Royals would win the ALC Pennant in 2014 and the World Series championship in 2015. The first thing Ned thought of was his old friend and how proud he would be of the persistent road to success. This episode has many never before heard Earnhardt hunting stories, as well “the rest of the story” of some of the most memorable tales told on The Download. First-off we did Ted Simmons wrong since his career average was .285 which is much higher than Andruw Jones' career .254 BA.  Simmons had 248 HR's which is among the best (13th) all time for a primary catcher.  Simmons' speech was the best from any of the three players although Larry Walker and Derek Jeter acquitted themselves well.  10 HOFers passed away over the 2 year period but only 4 people were inducted. We feel and discuss that there could easily be 30 or more that could be inducted which would still keep the percentage of players at 1%.  Please subscribe to our podcast and thanks for listening!
