“College Boy” Greg Harrington started working at Tower Records Burlington MA and did so well on his first day of register, they threw him back in receiving to do pricing. Not the usual path to working in the receiving department, but our guest this week didn't have a conventional career at Tower Records.Burlington MA, the big store on Boston's Newbury Street and the Cambridge store were all part of Greg Harrington's Tower journey. But in between all of that were stints at The Boston Phoenix, the Virgin Megastore and when Tower shut down, a considerable stint at FYE.Through it all Greg Harrington handled his Tower gigs with a positive outlook, a keen sense of humor and a pair of Oakley sunglasses wrapped around his head.On this week's episode of “2500 DelMonte Street” Greg Harrington, a Star Wars nerd, recalls ringing up Natalie Portman in Cambridge, an incident of a never solved, inside job robbery at the Newbury St. store, visits from New York Yankee coach Willie Randolph, regular visits to all three locations from Boston legend Peter Wolf, once with Van Morrison in tow and a whole lot more.Join us for a hilarious conversation with Greg Harrington on this week's episode of “2500 DelMonte Street: the Oral History of Tower Records”.
Back in the old days, there were a few ex-pats who had come from what became the Soviet Union, and may have been during their careers — Eddie Ainsmith was born in Russia, but came to America and went to high school in New Hampshire before becoming a catcher for the Washington Senators from 1910-18, and then on to the Tigers, Cardinals, Brooklyn Dodgers, and New York Giants through 1924. Ukrainians Reuben Ewing (1921 Cardinals) and Izzy Goldstein (1932 Tigers), and Latvian Joe Zapustas (1933 Philadelphia A's), all played in the majors after the Russian Revolution, but were born before it.Similarly, Dovydas Neverauskas was born in Vilnius in January 1993, nearly three years after independence was restored in Lithuania. Neverauskas, who went 1-4 with a 6.81 ERA with the Pirates in 76 relief appearances from 2017-20, is currently on the inactive list for Frederick in the Atlantic League, where the nickname-free team also is where Starlin Castro, Jimmy Paredes, and former nominative determinism prospect Johnni Turbo (career 290 stolen bases in 1,348 minor league games, but 86 times caught stealing, reaching Triple-A with the Angels and Orioles) can now be found. But the actual USSR? Only one major leaguer was born there: Victor Cole, born in Leningrad on January 23, 1968, and author of a scoreless inning against the Mets on June 6, 1992. Unfortunately for Cole, he was then asked to pitch another inning, and after getting Todd Hundley to ground out, he served up a ground-rule double to Sid Fernandez, a walk to Vince Coleman, a single to Willie Randolph, and a bases loaded walk to Howard Johnson before Dennis Lamp came in and allowed those inherited runners to all score, on hits by Eddie Murray and Bobby Bonilla.Cole pitched seven more times for the Pirates, making four starts and going 0-2 with a 5.48 ERA. Cole started the next year back on the farm, and wound up pitching in the farm systems of the Brewers, Royals, Padres, Cubs, and Cardinals, along with stints in Mexico and Korea. He was just as well-traveled before even setting foot on a baseball field. After Cole was born, his family moved to Sierra Leone and Canada before arriving in America at 10. He might go back to his birthplace to check it out, but he'll never be… This is a public episode. Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra is one of baseball's all-time greatest superstars. He amassed 10 World Series rings, three American League MVP awards and 18 All-Star Game appearances. He caught the only perfect game in World Series history in 1956. Yet for many observers his prolific accomplishments on the diamond were overshadowed by his remarkable and unique appeal as a pop culture personality. Long before athletes endorsing products became commonplace, Yogi was starring in TV commercials and connecting with fans from every demographic. His groundbreaking TV commercial appearances and unforgettable "Yogi-isms," which initially appeared to be head-scratching philosophical nuggets, became fashionable catch-phrases that made him a national treasure and an endearing figure on the American pop culture landscape. In telling the complete story of his extraordinary journey, It Ain't Over chronicles Berra's life as a savvy, commanding, bad-ball-hitting-catcher with a squat frame but also a D-Day Navy veteran, coach and manager, loving husband and father and, yes, product endorser and originator (mostly) of his own brand of proverbs now ingrained into everyday life. First person accounts include granddaughter Lindsay Berra, Yogi's three sons (Tim, Larry, and Dale), plus a legion of former Yankee greats, including Derek Jeter, Joe Torre, Mariano Rivera, Willie Randolph, Don Mattingly, Tony Kubek and Ron Guidry. Also featured are Billy Crystal, Bob Costas and Vin Scully, plus photos and eye-opening archival footage on and off the diamond. Berra famously said, "I'd be pretty dumb if I started being something I'm not," and It Ain't Over lovingly makes clear he stayed who he was for the benefit of baseball and everyone else. Berra was born on May 12th, 1925 in St Louis, Missouri in a neighborhood known as "The Hill." He spent his entire professional career playing in New York with the Yankees and briefly with the Mets, before retiring in 1965. Montclair, New Jersey was home for Yogi and his wife, Carmen. In 1972 he was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. That same year his iconic uniform No. 8 was retired by the Yankees. In 1988, the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center opened its doors on the campus of Montclair State University. He passed away at the age of 90 in 2015

NFL – National Football League – Week 16 Tonight Jacksonville Jaguars at New York Jets, 8:15 p.m. NFL – Bears not necessarily scheming for Fields to break record Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy says he hopes Justin Fields breaks the NFL single-season record for rushing yards by a quarterback. Getsy says the Bears won’t take Fields out of a game if he’s closing in on the record. But he also says the team won’t scheme for Fields to reach the mark. Fields has 1,000 yards rushing and has emerged as one of the NFL’s most exciting players. He needs 207 more yards to break Lamar Jackson’s mark from 2019, an average of 69 per game. The Bears started calling more runs for Fields after he struggled early in the season. NFL – Suspicious package causes brief lockdown at Bears’ facility The Chicago Bears' practice facility was briefly on lockdown Wednesday because of a suspicious package. Team spokesman Brandon Faber says police were called. No one was allowed to leave or enter the team's suburban campus for about an hour. The Bears practice about 30 miles north of Soldier Field. Chicago is scheduled to host the AFC East-leading Buffalo Bills on Saturday. NFL – Franco Harris, Steeler who caught Immaculate Reception, dies Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris has died at the age of 72 just days before the 50th anniversary of the “Immaculate Reception.” His catch for the Pittsburgh Steelers is considered the most iconic play in NFL history. Harris ran for 12,120 yards and won four Super Bowl rings with Pittsburgh in the 1970s. The team’s dynasty began in earnest when Harris decided to keep running during a last-second heave by quarterback Terry Bradshaw in a playoff game against Oakland in 1972. His catch and run off a deflected pass gave the Steelers their first-ever playoff win. Harris' son, Dok, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that his father died overnight. No cause of death was given. MLB – Cubs, All-Star SS Swanson finalize $177 million, 7-year deal All-Star shortstop Dansby Swanson has joined the Chicago Cubs, finalizing a $177 million, seven-year contract. The addition of Swanson is the biggest of three major moves by the Cubs since the end of the season. Right-hander Jameson Taillon signed a $68 million, four-year contract, and 2019 NL MVP Cody Bellinger got a $17.5 million, one-year deal. The 28-year-old Swanson is coming off perhaps his best big league season, hitting .277 with 25 homers and a career-best 96 RBIs in 162 games for Atlanta. Toulon tells the guy's Republicans do not own the thought of being tough on crime. The sheriff was a Yankee batboy in the '70s. His favorite player is Willie Randolph.
Before we get to the 1980 World Series, let's check in on the American League. For the fourth time in five seasons, the AL West Champion Kansas City Royals (97 - 65) face off against the AL East Champion New York Yankees (103 - 59) for the AL pennant. The Bronx Bombers came away victorious in the three previous matchups, but this year KC was looking to change the narrative. These teams come from cities that couldn't be more different, but a closer look at the make-up of their respective rosters shows similarities. Led by MVP-caliber stars: Reggie "Mr. October" Jackson and George Brett. Tremendous second-basemen: Willie Randolph and Frank "Smooth" White. Productive backstops: Rick Cerone and Darrell Porter. Solid veteran hitters: Bob Watson, Oscar Gamble and Hal McRae, Willie Aikens. And firemen at the back end: Rich "Goose" Gossage and Dan Quisenberry. Don't let the overall records and recent playoff history fool you; these are two very evenly matched teams. Game 1 in KC sees a matchup between two lefty aces, Larry Gura (18 - 10 2.95 ERA in 283 IP) vs. Ron "Gator/Lightning" Guidry (17 - 10 3.56 ERA in 219 IP) Game 2 in KC sees the veteran workhorse Dennis Leonard (20 - 11 3.79 ERA in 280 IP) take on veteran lefty swingman Rudy May (15 -5 2.46 ERA in 175 IP) Game 3 in NYC yet another lefty-lefty battle, NYY sends rubber-armed Tommy John (22 - 9 3.43 ERA in 265 IP) vs. Paul Splittorff (14 - 11 4.14 ERA in 204 IP) Can the Royals finally break through versus their cross-country rival, or will the Yankees continue their dominance into the new decade? Audio Clips from Youtube As always, shout out to Baseball Reference and SABR for statistics, box scores, background information, and much, much more. Catch you next time, P.C.O. *On the original publish, an audio glitch with my microphone occurred around the 44 minute mark, and corrupted my audio from that point. I had to rerecord on a different microphone for the second half of the show. Apologies for the drop off in audio quality*

He has had the honor of getting to know some of the game's greatest names, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Reggie Jackson, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Billy Martin, Casey Stengel, Whitey Ford, Bobby Richardson, Elston Howard, Catfish Hunter, Graig Nettles, Thurman Munson, Lou Pinella, and Willie Randolph. SHOW NOTESSEGMENT 1Kevin Barbaro starts his show off with introducing Kevin Beck, an author who writes about Track and Field and who was Kevin's former roommate and teammate back in college. Run Strong is one of the books Kevin has written within his writing career. They speak about the recent news surrounding Shelby Houlihan and the ban that followed her positive drug test. The substances found in Shelby's system could have come from things like ingested meat, which further questions the legitimacy of the test. Kevin Beck then discusses the media and press and the narratives that have come out following this suspension.SEGMENT 2Following the break, they continued their Track and Field discussion on Shelby Houlihan. Kevin talks about his observation on the tiny “fishbowl” of Track and Field in the sports world, and how this impacts the media coverage on this sport. Kevin Beck is able to give his personal perspective on sports writing on T/F and the lack of coverage on this specific sport. Sometimes he sees how journalists would rather be the “big fish” in this sport rather than give more focus on the quality of the written or verbal media being produced from it. Kevin shares his personal experience with accidentally taking steroids because the substance he bought was over the counter and he was not drug tested. Today, Kevin is still surrounded by people and actors who are taking steroids. And he shares the many reasons as to why Shelby might be telling the truth, as the process it takes to obtain the drug without others knowing is more complex than others would think it would be.SEGMENT 3Kevin welcomes his second guest onto his show, Willie Randolph. After his career of coaching, Willie then wrote his first book, Faith in the Eye of the Storm. Willie shares his personal experience on when Hurricane Karina hit and there was loss and grief found everywhere. As a head coach, Willie stepped up and helped multiple families in this tragic crisis. From the values he was raised on, he continued to stay kind and faithful despite the burdens he had brought on to him. By progressing into multiple roles including the NCAA representative to a cook, his main focus was making sure his players would be taken care of and given comfort during this difficult and uncertain time.SEGMENT 4Following the break, Kevin and Willie continue to speak more about Willie's book and the experiences that sparked him to write this book. Willie gives special thanks to his mother and grandmother, two very strong women he had in his life during his youth, for being his main source of faith. Watching his mother go through many difficult things, including illness, showed him the values of a true character. After Katrina hit, Willie noticed more people having a feeble foundation in faith or even an absence of faith. Kevin jumps in to talk about certain questions that come up when things are going bad and your faith is being questioned. However, both Kevin and Willie agree that still, we are all human and it is inevitable to be imperfect. Willie adds that it's important to keep “moving in your purpose” and find ways to make an impact in this world despite the difficult experiences that may occur.
Coach Randolph discusses leading a team through Hurricane Katrina, navigating the politics of collegiate sports, and fear as the most destructive virus.
Although Willie Randolph praised Gene Baker, his first MLB coach with the Pirates, who taught him the fundamentals of the game, but he also shared a powerful message from his teammate and mentor Baseball Hall of Famer Willie Stargell. And the joy of being around his roommate Dock Ellis. Our guest interacted with a number of Baseball Hall of Famers who passed away but it was the late Bob Gibson and Joe Morgan who impacted his life on how to compete and play the game the right way. This Brooklyn native (who actually enjoys doing impersonations) talked about hearing from a message from Buck O’Neil and even another voicemail left by “The Boss” George Steinbrenner. As the former Mets manager, Willie’s recollections of the 2006 Mets season and if he were asked to come back to manage could he navigate today’s players, coaches and his team in the world of baseball analytics?
Although he was born in South Carolina, Willie Randolph’s childhood was deeply rooted in New York City. This Yankees all-star infielder played 18 seasons and in 2004, he received “The Call” to become the first African-American manager for the N.Y. Mets. This was an extraordinary moment considering the Mets were the team he actually rooted for while playing sandlot ball as a kid in Brooklyn. In 1972, before his high school graduation, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was at Pirate City, the Pirates’ Spring Training complex in Florida, where he would catch a glimpse of “The Great One” taking batting practice. He never forgot that moment and although he didn’t meet Roberto Clemente, he enjoyed his brief career playing with the organization and playing alongside Clemente’s teammates. But before eventually becoming a World Series champion, he shared a heartfelt story about his mom and dad who provided unwavering support to their son and he even talked about a former Negro League player who made a huge impact in his playing career.
Do you or a loved one suffer from Metsothelioma? Then you may be entitled to compensation. Make no mistake about it, new ownership or not, being a Mets fan is a sickness and this week was a prime example of that. What felt like a marathon of events was crammed into just 7 days and had the guys thinking they may need to add a second episode if it continues on this pace. We break down the Dom Smith/ Alvarado "meet me in the tunnel" feud, ESPN's trash broadcast that makes everyone's ears bleed and the unlikely -illar duo that's taking the lineup by storm. Clem recaps his sleepy night during the Diaz blown save/ Homer-NoMer from Hoskins, KFC declares Rojas is officially on borrowed time and everyone gives their thoughts on the Alonso-Donnie Stevenson-Hughie Q news that gave us flashbacks to the Willie Randolph firing. It's a lot to keep track of when the Mets are constantly riding highs and lows, but we gotta believe that cooler heads will prevail. deGrom will take the extra time he needs to get healthy, Frankie Lindor will eventually learn how to swing that thing called a bat and the rest of the squad will assume the roles they were meant to play. Don't let a shaky start out of the gate sway you into thinking this team isn't good. They are exactly who we thought they were, now they just have to show it.

Tom and Josh decided to change things up and have a bit of fun this week drafting squads of position players based on the sort of MLB legends who appealed to retired MLB manager Whitey Herzog -- teams full of players that ran well, defended well and got on base. Then we ran a totally realistic simulation of our lineups in a seven game series against mediocre MLB journeyman Darren Oliver and famous MLB bust Todd Van Popple and forgot to track stolen bases until midway through the series. Notes: Tom's dog Dalton makes a few cameo appearances in the background. He's such a good boy. We used WhatIfSports to run the simulation: https://www.whatifsports.com/locker/ Here's Hal McRae's famous "takeout slide" of Willie Randolph: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIiYw53nGd0
We look back at the career of #12 Willie Randolph. From his Brooklyn roots to his minor league stint in Quebec and NY Yankee stardom. We relive his late run with the Dodgers, realize a connection with Sandy Alderson and briefly touch on his Mets tenure in '92 (brief the key word), before jumping to his coaching career, and finally landing the big gig with the NY Mets. Ray and JonnyIce also make a bold 2025 prediction including Willie and point out Willie's lore in a pop culture classic. During this episode, we share memories of Willie's run at the helm, including leading a franchise turnaround, before captaining a sinking ship in '07. We debate what could have been had Willie been allowed to pick his own staff, showed more emotion in key times and relive key moments in his run with the team. Toward the end, we look back at the "Midnight Massacre - Part II," and analyze everything that went wrong with his firing. As always, we start with looking back at the week that was in Mets land, and make a few obscure references to Mets of the past. This week's "hot name" is Chico Walker. Don't ask. Amazin' But True: A NY Mets Baseball Podcast from New York Post Sports
Jake Brown and Nelson Figueroa open the show talking about the COVID outbreak on the Marlins and how it may affect the league. They then dive into the Mets losing two out of three games to the Braves, Edwin Diaz allowing the game-tying homer Saturday, Sunday's embarrassing loss and what needs to change. NY Post sportswriter Zach Braziller makes his debut on the pod to talk about the remainder of the MLB season, the Mets bullpen and options for the fifth starter. Former Mets closer and one of the greatest closers in baseball history Billy Wagner then joins the show. Wagner discusses not being in the Hall of Fame, his final season being so good, coming back quick from Tommy John Surgery, the pressure pitching in New York and looking back to Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS and Willie Randolph not putting him in to pitch the 9th inning.
On Jan. 25, 2006, then-Mets manager Willie Randolph appeared on "Mike and the Mad Dog" to discuss the previous season and the one that was on the horizon. Randolph talked about Aaron Heilman, Kazuo Matsui, Xavier Nady, showdowns with the Phillies and more. The Mets, of course, went on to win the NL East in 2006 and came within one game of reaching the World Series.
Rock of Ages star Kirsten Scott joins Al in the Batter's Box to chat about her career on The Great White Way. Whether it’s Hairspray, Big Fish, or Jersey Boys, Kirsten is a spark plug for any cast she’s in - - a parallel you’d find on any successful Broadway championship team in the spirit of Willie Randolph, Derek Jeter, or Johnny Damon. She also holds the distinction of being one of the few people on Broadway who’s had the chance to share the stage with the New York Yankees’ 6-time All-Star, and socially progressive closer, Aroldis Chapman, for a special one-off performance at Rock of Ages this summer. So impressed by Chapman's fastball velocity and theatricality, she and Al not only discuss his impact on baseball, but on the Broadway community. Kirsten's career on stage very much mirrors various aspects of what it's like to be a successful Major League player, which sets a nice undertone for this episode. Much like a night at the ballpark, this episode also features some singing during the 7th Inning Stretch...
