From 'DA's New York Accent' (Subscribe Here): Jeff Nelson's timing is impeccable. He was traded to the Yankees in December of 1995, just 10 months before the Yankees' first World Series title since 1978. He collected three more championships with the Bombers and then left in 2001, just as the next title drought began. He was in the dugout for two Yankees perfect games and then called another last week for YES as Domingo German achieved the historic feat. Nelson discusses his trade with Tino Martinez, the ghosts in the Old Stadium, and the late nights of David Wells and David Cone. He discusses the 116-win Mariners team that touched regular season history but was doomed by his old Yankees teammates and the chances for an October run in the Bronx this year. Bernie reacts to the news that Scott Rolen will be wearing a Cardinals hat on his Hall of Fame plaque. Bernie talks about how the move isn't a surprise given how he has had ties to St. Louis growing up as a kid. Bernie also revisits how Rolen's beef with Tony La Russa was primarily influenced by Tino Martinez while his rift with former Phillies manager Larry Bowa was harder to understand.
David, Justin and James fully cover the six year agreement between Carlos Rodón and the Yankees. David breaks down what makes Rodón an ideal fit for the Yankees at this moment in time. The crew goes over his increased K-rate the last couple of seasons, the range of fastball velocity he possesses, and David believes Rodón shouldn't tweak anything that has brought him to this point until he has to. Coney believes the versatility of the Yankees rotation is what could make it great. The crew also drew comparisons to Tino Martinez when it comes to Rodón's arrival in the Bronx. Elsewhere, the hosts think the rumor of Max Fried being available is something we all should keep in the back of our minds. What should the Yankees do next? Which of the still-available free agent pitchers would you want to sign? And a look at the World Baseball Classic. 00:00 INTRO 02:09 The Opener 06:24 Yankees sign Carlos Rodon 21:27 Max Fried trade rumors 24:50 Remaining free agents 27:34 World Baseball Classic 34:34 Yankees Talk 42:16 OUTRO
In this week's episode, the boys start off by commenting on the Yankees recent struggles. Trouble in the Bronx? The trifecta of injuries hits the league yet again. This time in the form of Byron Buxton's return to the IL, Walker Buehler shutdown to get Tommy John surgery and Fernando Tatis Jr. getting shoulder surgery while he's suspended. Recent news broke about Los Angeles Angels owner Arturo Moreno seeking a buyer for his club. We knew the Angels were in rough shape, but now more than ever we see the culture is truly broken. The boys break down the shockwaves a potential sale has for the Halos. After, Michael recaps the final two episodes of Derek Jeter's doc 'The Captain.' The Forgotten Series returns; this time the boys cover their second forgotten star of the summer: J.R. Richard. From his beginnings with the Houston Astros in the early-70s, to his sudden departure from the league due to a health scare, Richard is one of the more fascinating figures in all of sports. The boys round out the show with Fantasy Factory and Collection Corner.

Episode 102 is filled with baseball, barbecue, and a contest for the greatest podcast audience ever.Joey Machado is a marketing guru and the barbecue community is lucky he is a part of it. In part two of our interview we learn more about Blues Hog BBQ and Gateway Drum Smokers, but it humorously begins with a Seinfeld TV show reference. From there we learn why Tim Scheer is a genius and has Joey's, as well as the barbecue industry's ultimate respect. Joey provides exceptional information, but more importantly he is a prime example of how barbecue people are some of the friendliest you will ever meet.Tim Neverett spent last year like most of America, unsure of what each day would bring during a pandemic. The difference though is that most of America does not work as a television and radio play-by-play announcer for the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 2020, the major league baseball season, usually a 162 game marathon became a 60 game sprint played in front of empty/cardboard cutout filled stands. Each day Tim chronicled his time with the team as well as what was happening in this country outside of baseball. The abbreviated 60 game season was hard fought and ultimately won by the Dodgers. Covid Curveball: An Inside View of the 2020 Los Angeles Dodgers World Championship Season is Tim's in-depth look at one of the strangest baseball season's ever, and we were lucky to have the chance to discuss this great book. Elda's Kitchen was featured in episode 97 as we interviewed co-owner, Brie Blackford. They are now sponsoring a contest specifically for our listeners. We wish everyone good luck.In-between the two interviews Leonard tells us about a special day he spent at Yankee Stadium. Without spoiling it, the day included Tino Martinez and Mariano Rivera. We conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Ace and Bobo" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. We recommend you go to Fifth & Cherry, https://fifthandcherry.com for wonderful cutting boards and http://www.baseballbbq.com for grill tools and clothing for barbecue and baseball fans and the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag.We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe.If you would like to contact the show, we would love to hear from you.Call the show - (516) 855-8214Email - baseballandbbq@gmail.comTwitter - @baseballandbbqInstagram - baseballandbarbecueYouTube - baseball and bbqWebsite - https://baseballandbbq.weebly.com

Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex gets you ready for what promises to be the most entertaining week of the season to date. It all begins tonight, as the Rays and Red Sox will make-up their game from last Thursday, which was rained out. The two teams had some "tweet beef" over the weekend, which only adds to the anticipation to tonight's game. On the negative side, the Red Sox draw David Price for the second time in less than a week. Tough break. Price had his way with the Red Sox offense last week, as did his teammate Matt Moore and Baltimore's Chris Tillman. Alex examines whether last week's offensive skid was a fluke, or the sign of greater problems. Jose Iglesias' offensive struggles in July are most certainly not a fluke, however. Alex says it's time to remove Iglesias from 3B, and give Will Middlebrooks another chance at the job. If Middlebrooks can't do it, then top prospect Xander Bogaerts should receive an opportunity. Anybody but Iglesias. The Red Sox remain hesitant to trade Bogaerts or other top prospects at the trade deadline on Wednesday, which is why Alex believes they will stand out. Prices are high, and there are no players on the market who are worth deviating from the long-term plan for. Plus, players will still be available in August. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings, and talks about the Yankees' walk-off win on Sunday. Derek Jeter homered in his first at-bat back from injury, and Alfonso Soriano delivered with a home run and the game winning single. Alex talks about how the Soriano trade reeks of desperation, and also tells Brian Cashman, who said over the weekend that ownership forced him to make the trade, to stop whining. As GM, Cashman should do a better job of fighting against ownership/ Alex Rodriguez may plan to fight MLB this week, as reports indicate A-Rod could get suspended through 2014. Clearly, the Yankees are hoping this suspension occurs before August 1st, which is A-Rod' supposed new return date. The Phillies, though not as much of a mess as the Yankees, are in some trouble of their own. They've lost eight straight games, and Jonathan Papelbon has called for full-scale changes. You know things are bad when even Papelbon can recognize the dire state the organization is in. The Marlins are seemingly perpetually in a dire state, and may have hit a new low this weekend when former hitting coach Tino Martinez resigned because he was abusive to players. But that's not even the worst part ... owner Jeffrey Loria originally blocked Martinez' resignation. Okay then. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
