For decades, critical praise for a TV show was that it was “not like TV,” but more like a novel or a movie. That ingrained hierarchy always bugged Emily Nussbaum, who went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for her criticism in The New Yorker. She has been compared to Pauline Kael, but Nussbaum—acknowledging the compliment—is quick to point out that she has never written about movies, nor has she wanted to. She was inspired to be a TV critic by “Television Without Pity,” a blog site of passionate, informed fans arguing constantly. In her new book, “I Like to Watch: Arguing My Way through the TV Revolution,” Nussbaum argues that the success of serious antihero dramas like “The Sopranos” and “Breaking Bad” has led many to devalue mainstays of TV, like comedies and even soap operas. It’s time to stop comparing TV to anything else, she tells David Remnick.

Why does TV matter so much to us? How is producing or critiquing television different in the peak TV era ? We dig into the joys of television ahead of the ATX Television Fest.Joining us in the studio is Tara Ariano, an Austinite who helped pioneer the TV recap format as one of the creators of the website Television Without Pity and who continues to evolve it with write-ups and podcasts at Previously.tv. ALSO: One of the highlights of the festival this year is a "Felicity" reunion, which got Tolly and co-host Addie Broyles thinking: Why are coming-of-age shows so memorable? They chatted with Felicity megafan (and features editor) Sharon Chapman about the other shows that influenced us in our journey toward adulthood, and why we continue to watch them, long after we've "grown up." PLUS: Even if you’re not a soccer-obsessed fan, you'll probably catch some of this year's World Cup action somewhere, so we brought in "The United States of Soccer" author Phil West to explain what we should be looking for, even though Team USA isn't in competition, and which bars and restaurants will have the best watch parties. AND FINALLY: With the Paramount Summer Movie Series already underway, we checked in with Statesman culture writer Joe Gross about which movies you should try to catch there this summer and why it's so fun to watch a movie in an old-school theater. In A Toast recommendations: Nintendo Labo, Calimochos and organizing your friends and family to contribute money for an experiential birthday gift. More info: http://austin360.com/loveaustin360

Bunting (@TomatoNation), to discuss the lemonlyman.com plotline—inspired by Aaron Sorkin’s own posts on TWoP. We’re also joined by David Wade (@davideckelswade) who was national spokesman for then-Senator John Kerry’s presidential campaign and who later served as Secretary Kerry’s chief of staff. We compare President Bartlet’s hot mic moment in this episode with a famous one from John Kerry when he was a candidate. For more, visit thewestwingweekly.com/316.

Alan Sepinwall's blog What's Alan Watching launched in 2005, when he was working as a TV critic at Newark newspaper The Star-Ledger. The site would take the TV episode recap, something popularized on sites like Television Without Pity, and turn it into a place for almost instant analysis of readers' favorite shows. He's since moved on to Hitfix and Uproxx and has written two books, each on some of the greatest shows ever made. He joins Todd to talk about why he favors strong episodes to full seasons, the biggest changes to TV criticism over the years, and the greatest TV series ever made. Learn more about your ad choices. From a TV-loving high-schooler who learned about the TV business on the great old “Television Without Pity” message boards to actually writing about TV at TV Guide Magazine and Variety among others…We covered Oriana's journey to becoming one of the best TV-ratings reporters out there. There's a Mark Cuban quote that “Nobody ever quit something they're good at,” but Oriana was not merely good as a TV ratings reporter, she...

(Bonus audio: "Glasses", by Jonathan Coulton, the S.S. Librarianship theme song. Used by permission). Back in the heyday of Television Without Pity, when a show went off the air, they would often assign it the status of "Indefinite Hiatus." In some ways this was a brilliant flash of foresight about the future of TV - they were anticipating that some beloved shows would never be over for good in the age of Netflix and crowdfunding. But it always seemed, too, like a rather poetic nod to the fact that the media we love never really ends, because we can always return to it again and again, often discovering it anew as we continue to grow and change beyond the era it was made and the perspectives we held. You've probably noticed that S.S. Librarianship has been quiet for a while. We've decided that, for the foreseeable future, this project is over for us. We've loved the ride, and we've so appreciated the responses we've gotten and the opportunities the show has given us to engage in conversation with each other and with so many brilliant and fascinating friends and colleagues. We're very proud of this podcast as a body of work and a testament to our passion for our profession and all our other favourite things. We'll keep the site up and running for the time being, which means you can return to this feed or to this page to access the archives. We hope the show continues to be discovered by new librarians and new nerds, and continues to provide something useful, or at least entertaining, to all who listen. We're also not shutting the door completely on podcasting in general. Right now we're both pretty busy with work and life, but we see each other often, and we've never stopped enjoying talking to each other and everyone else about the things we love and the issues we care about. So we may very well be back before you know it, in some form or another. In the meantime you can find us on Twitter individually: Alli is @navillusnosilla and Sam is @dothenextthing. And we still get emails at sslibrarianship@gmail.com. That's all there is for now, friends. We'll catch you on the proverbial flipside. -Sam and Alli

Summer is upon us, and we talk about some of the summer programming we're most looking forward to watching. Margaret's interested in the new Baz Luhrman show The Get Down, Andrew's thinking about catching up with Mr Robot, and we all wonder why TBS won't let us watch Playing House in some easily accessible streaming place. Our main discussion this week is about the secondary television market - recaps, post-show discussions, series-specific podcasts, and all forms of immediate TV criticism. We talk about what works and what doesn't, why we like TV criticism, and what kinds of recaps we seek out. Margaret and Kathryn are wistful about the late, lamented Television Without Pity, and Andrew tells us how TV recaps are like a tree.
