Tara Ariano returns to send Season 4 of QIF out on an ice floe with Something To Talk About, 1995's marriage/family dramedy starring Julia Roberts; directed by Lasse Hallstrom (!); and written by Callie Khouri (!!). What is it about this "Hallmark movie, but with an associates degree" that lets it hold together despite what Tara called "a fundamental 'should this have happened? maybe not?' quality"? Good sister chemistry with Kyra Sedgwick and a couple of relatable town gossips triumph over zyde-faux, flagrant reshoot-wig fouls, and a BS excuse for infidelity; and WE triumph over the early-to-mid-nineties portion of Quaid's c.v. Again With This: Beverly Hills, 90210 & Melrose Place

With Sydney settling into her work managing Lauren's call girl business, Michael can't help getting curious about her little black book, and very quickly finds useful information in it: it seems Dr. Levin, his antagonist at the hospital, is a client! Since Michael isn't going to be able to advance on the traditional path of doing reliably good work, he opts for blackmail instead. Everything in his life sure is falling into place! No further drama on the horizon for him, probably! It's starting to be a problem for Alison, and the therapeutic process, that Dr. Miller is exactly her type. Even Billy knows it's worrisome not only that Alison kept her therapy a secret from him, but that (as Amanda reports) Dr. Miller is casual enough to have "sessions" over seafood lunch at the marina. He confronts Dr. Miller about hitting on Alison, which Dr. Miller denies he is doing; then Alison confronts him about not hitting on her? Eep. Both Amanda and Jo notice weird clunking noises at Amanda's place, though when they investigate the apparent source -- the vacant apartment next door -- they don't find anything; that's because Peeping Ted has moved on from the hole behind Amanda's shower to the attic above her bedroom. However, his horniess apparently makes him careless, and he can't escape discovery forever. Find a comfortable position (mood stabilizers optional) and join us for our podcast on "Psycho-Therapy"! This week on the podcast, we're joined by an extra (hot great) special guest: Tara Ariano, the founder of Television Without Pity (may it rest forever in peace), editor-at-large of Primetimer, podcaster extraordinaire, and personal joint hero of Margaret and Kathryn. We are, in fact, so excited to praise Tara for her many accomplishments that we barely remember to say her name! In addition to schooling us on the parallels between Lodge 49 and Succession, Tara lets us know if the new Batman-spinoff show Pennyworth is worth it. And then the three of us dig into what we're REALLY here to discuss: the new Showtime original series Couples Therapy, with which it's safe to say we are obsessed. Join us to hear about therapist Orna Guralnik's expressive eyebrows, adorable dog, and astute insights-- as well as Margaret's strange connection to the show Married at First Sight, and what all three of us would do if Bebe Neuwirth wanted to drink our blood. If you enjoyed Tara as much as we did, you can find her any of the following places: Recapping classic episodes of Beverly Hills 90210 and Melrose Place on the Again With This podcast  Analyzing the present season of Succession on The Sweet Smell of Succession And being generally QUITE interesting and expert about TV at large on her general interest TV podcast, Extra Hot Great (where Kathryn appeared (and covered herself in no Game Time glory) on three episodes.)

I loved what Linda had to say about how practicing appellate law helped hone her critical writing; getting used to listening to her own voice; how she manages anxiety and depression, and the difficulty in even acknowledging that she wanted to write a novel. Is Hulu trying to make its own American Crime Story with anthology true-crime series The Act? Maybe; Tara Ariano and I agree they're off to a good start with the eight-part Gypsy Blanchard limited series co-created by Michelle Dean. Good production design, good performances, and a good sense of the claustrophobia in Gypsy and DeeDee's relationship make for a compelling look at a case full of cons. History Detectives isn't as successful; I thought recent Austin transplant Tara might enjoy an investigation into one of the city's more gruesome chapters, but the show's ponderously didactic tour of the servant girl murders of 1884-5 didn't work for the true-crime buff OR the civilian on the panel. But sidle on up to kiosk anyway, and slide The Blotter Presents, Episode 090 right into your tote bag. Support the pod/site on Patreon! Why does TV matter so much to us? How is producing or critiquing television different in the peak TV era ? We dig into the joys of television ahead of the ATX Television Fest.Joining us in the studio is Tara Ariano, an Austinite who helped pioneer the TV recap format as one of the creators of the website Television Without Pity and who continues to evolve it with write-ups and podcasts at Previously.tv. ALSO: One of the highlights of the festival this year is a "Felicity" reunion, which got Tolly and co-host Addie Broyles thinking: Why are coming-of-age shows so memorable? They chatted with Felicity megafan (and features editor) Sharon Chapman about the other shows that influenced us in our journey toward adulthood, and why we continue to watch them, long after we've "grown up." PLUS: Even if you’re not a soccer-obsessed fan, you'll probably catch some of this year's World Cup action somewhere, so we brought in "The United States of Soccer" author Phil West to explain what we should be looking for, even though Team USA isn't in competition, and which bars and restaurants will have the best watch parties. AND FINALLY: With the Paramount Summer Movie Series already underway, we checked in with Statesman culture writer Joe Gross about which movies you should try to catch there this summer and why it's so fun to watch a movie in an old-school theater. In A Toast recommendations: Nintendo Labo, Calimochos and organizing your friends and family to contribute money for an experiential birthday gift. More info: http://austin360.com/loveaustin360

Dan and I leaned into the Warren Jeffs topic by watching not just A&E's outing but the 2015 documentary from Showtime, and discussed the similarities between LDS fundies and Scientology; what reminded us of Trump about Jeffs; Mormon naming conventions; and whether Norman Mailer's The Executioner's Song should join In Cold Blood as a twin vintage pillar of the true-crime genre. We'll also be discussing whether Sarah's the only one who thinks Édgar Ramirez as Versace looks AND sounds like Enrico Colantoni; if it's appropriate to covet a character's clothing if that character is a spree killer; and the question of The Nose in Penelope Cruz's portrayal of Donatella. In our Cold Case section, Sarah sits down with Chad Boushell -- the unlucky Rob McKernan in the Bride Killa ep we looked at for Episode 39 -- to ask what's the hardest thing about playing the body, and the responsibility actors feel to real victims. Screw It, We're Just Gonna Talk About the Beatles

On this episode we talk about two less-often-discussed Beatles movies: Nowhere Boy (2009) and Backbeat (1994). These are not Beatles movies as in the Beatles were in them, but that are Beatles movies in that they are fictionalized accounts of the Beatles real lives. First we discuss Nowhere Boy, which shows John Lennon in high school, meeting his reckless but inspiring birth mother Julia, learning to play banjo and guitar, meeting Paul McCartney and coming to terms with his strict but reliable Aunt Mimi. Then we get into Backbeat, which shows the life of Stu Sutcliffe, John's friend in Liverpool art college, who was the Beatles original bass player and who joins the band when they go to Hamburg. Plus we talk about the very cool band of 1994 grungy all-stars that got assembled to make this movie's soundtrack! Although both movies have their flaws, I think big Beatles fans would love them both and in this episode we get into why! My panel for this episode is Brian Hines (Sea Tea theatre in Hartford, Ct and brother of the host) and Tara Ariano (previously.tv web site and podcasting network). As I note in the introduction, the recording quality for this ep is a bit less than usual. We were all in different cities and I was using some new software. I didn't configure everything exactly right. Everyone is still easy to understand, but you can hear that we are all on phones, etc. My apologies!
