She is also an artist and illustrator. In our conversation, we talk about how Sydney got into fight direction and some of the plays Sydney has worked on, or would like to work on and the swords she enjoys using. We also talk about being a clown, and the joy of having the audience throw a pie in your face. This leads us into a discussion about some of Shakespeare's clowns and how they have been portrayed on film by different actors, more or less successfully. Sydney has a website for her art, called True Edge Art, and we talk about some of her designs and what inspires her. A big part of her inspiration in both her visual art and her stage work is environmentalism, and she is keen to do more work making the violence of climate change feel more real and more visceral by embodying it through actual violence on stage. And she's also going to do a one-person show about a clown raccoon.

Brews and Tiny Teeth, The Unfiltered Pediatric Dentistry Podcast
Dr. Brandon Schwindt is a pediatric dentist who practices in Portland, Oregon. He started Kona Kids Dentistry from scratch in 2003, and practiced for 6 years in a leased space before making the investment and buying land to build a new office. He discusses the conversations he had with his financial team to determine if building a large office was the right move from a growth and tax perspective. In 2011, he completed the building with 3800 sq ft and 8 op chairs plus a hygiene bay. He practices in the location with his wife, who works as a GP seeing adolescent patients, along with an additional new associate. Dr. Schwindt and I spend a lot of time discussing the process of transitioning from a leased space into a ground-up build, and the lending and tax consequences that go along with it. We review how deductible rent expenses from the practice can go towards paying the mortgage on the building. He explains how depreciating components of the building and smart accounting work helped to lower his tax liability while building equity that he can use to boost his retirement. He also gives advice to new pediatric dentists who are trying to decide if building or leasing is the right choice for their practice.

In today's episode, we take a closer look at how climate change affected early modern England--especially during the Little Ice Age, a period of global cooling that occurred from the 16th to the 19th century. We explore how this environmental phenomenon influenced the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, and what it can teach us about our current global climate crisis. To help us gain a deeper understanding of the issue, we are joined by Sydney Schwindt. Sydney Schwindt wears many hats in the theatre world; she is an actor, director, fight director, and educator. She is a resident artist and climate justice advocate on the engagement team with the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival. She is the program developer with the Society of American Fight Directors and is on the advisory board for the Same Boat Theatre Collective. She has taught movement and stage combat at the American Conservatory Theatre's Graduate program and Indiana University. Sydney shares her expertise on the intersection of climate change and the arts, and how theatre can be used as a tool to raise awareness and promote action on climate issues. We discuss the role that theatre can play in shaping our attitudes towards the environment and how they can inspire us to take action. Finally, we provide listeners with resources to get involved in the fight against climate change, from simple actions that can be taken in our daily lives to organizations that are making a difference. This is the second episode in our Heart Month 2023 Medical Monday series. In last week's Wednesday Writer Chat, Anna talked to author Richard Schwindt about his life and he was born in the 1950s with a congenital heart condition. He informed Anna that monkey lungs helped to keep him alive through one of his surgeries. Curious about what procedure would utilize monkey lungs, Anna did some research and found an article in the December 2021 journal Perfusion Theory and she shared it with her husband, who is a certified, registered nurse anesthetist. He also looked deeper on the Internet to see what he could find out about this curious time in congenital heart disease history. This episode not only reveals what Frank and Anna discovered online but some personal anecdotes from Frank about working in the operating room, as well as some interesting facts about Dr. William Thornton Mustard. In this episode Brianne Vaillancourt and I explore the the edge between Possibility Management and Permaculture. In particular we explore the potential to harness conscious feelings in our design work. Having started this conversation back in episode fifteen with Clinton Callahan, I feel joy to be going there again. Joy because the clarity of the distinctions I have learned in Possibility Management contexts are contributing so much to my work in design, holding space, and my life generally. Brianne Vaillancourt & Dan Palmer Learn more about Brianne (and sign up to her newsletter!) through her personal website. Learn more about Clinton at his personal website. Learn more about Anne-Chloé Destremau, who Brianne mentions, here. Learn more about Possibility Management, Rage Club, Fear Club and Mage Training which are all mentioned. Something that wasn't mentioned, but I was thinking of during the episode, is this site using the term Whole Permaculture to explore the Permaculture-Possibility Management bridge. If you are interested in learning more about Possibility Management in an actual training experience, I recommend this online Expand the Box training run by my friend, colleague and guide Vera Franco. Chris has been involved as a principal in real estate projects throughout Oregon and SW Washington for over 17 years. He is a former practicing attorney and has deep expertise in foreclosures & redemption rights, probates, bankruptcy, land development, renovation/value-add projects, and creative financing & transaction structures within all real estate classes. He currently manages a portfolio of residential and commercial assets, and is active in buy-sell, development and redevelopment projects throughout the area. He enjoys the challenge and variety in bringing creative, mutually beneficial solutions to challenging real estate-related problems, as well as the lifestyle this work affords. What makes Chris different from the other Attorneys[3:43]Chris has a very entrepreneurial mindset. He got tired of working the billable hour and so he looked for something outside of that. He was willing to take the risk of being an entrepreneur and he knew the risks of losing money or not making it sooner and aggressively. Competition[6:43]It's always been competitive. Back then it wasn't as competitive as it became. There were fewer players and more people that were just waiting for the auctions and going to buy at auction at that time. If you're trying to jump ahead of that and figure out ways to transact deals and structure deals ahead of that, that would be profitable and resolve the problems. Fewer people were doing that so it worked.[7:29]There are always competitors and there always has been certainly getting more competitive over the years in terms of activity, pre-foreclosure activity, and just the type of marketing that you do for that. Chris's Solution[9:13]Buying the property. Generally, you're just trying to buy properties. You're trying to buy properties below market and create a spread to market or retail or unlock some type of value in the property through development or redevelopment. [9:47]Doing a lease-purchase option back with the seller was one way to allow them to stay in the property and even potentially buy it back for profitable spread to the investors. The Lease-Purchase Option[12:39]Doing the lease-purchase option, the transaction is pretty much been eliminated at this point in time, because of some statutes that came on the books a little while back. Keys to Success[13:30]Having the legal background gave Chris a bit of a leg up in terms of understanding the statutory processes. Understanding how to read and decipher title reports, manufacture and deliver and negotiate the contracts involved. Familiarizing yourself with all three of those and building relationships with attorneys who understand it. The Learning Curve[14:44]It just depends where you're coming from. There's a lot to learn. I wouldn't probably start doing that as a novice real estate investor off the bat on my own. I would probably be looking to partner with somebody who's already been doing it for a while and knows all of them and kind of bring them leads or do some of the grunt work.[15:39]There's an element of just taking some risk and getting in there. I've learned way more just by doing deals and dealing with different unique situations than I've ever learned from any book or seminar. Just getting in there and actively doing it and giving it a shot and then learning as you go. Motivated Seller[16:43]It just kind of grew more just diversifying into different ways of finding a motivated seller. Most of what we do boils down to finding a motivated seller that they have some motivation to sell on terms or on how to price it provides a profit potential and then managing that transaction through to the end sale. Growing and adapting[17:27]Being adaptable, being creative, and learning and trying new things. It's how you grow and build it over time. Predictions and Opinions[19:38]January and February are going to be the highest number of eviction filings ever all across the country due to the Pandemic. Where Chris will focus his efforts on the Future[23:35]I've got a lot of different irons in the fire and over time, my business and experience have grown and I've gotten into commercial and development projects and things like that so I'm not as focused on single-family, distressed properties as it once was, but it's still a good business and there's still opportunity to bring value and make a lot of money doing it.[24:00]I think it makes sense to be positioned as having already gained experience, knowledge, and background dealing with all that to be ready for it. I assume that there's going to be a lot more opportunity in that area probably for several years. Chris's Advice[24:52]Understand the title of what you're bidding on is important.[25:25]Make sure that you're capitalized well enough to bear whatever risk you're taking. You have to really understand the risk you're taking and be willing to bear the risk of loss. Calculate that you have a greater chance of gain and loss in any given deal or transaction.[26:46]When you're starting out, you got to rely on a third party so make sure you build in the time you need to figure it out so you can get the people in there that have that experience to tell you what you don't know.[28:55]The number one thing to also keep in mind is that you're gonna make your money when you buy. If you didn't make your money when you bought you probably gonna lose money.[30:23]Understand that you're going to make your money on that purchase and not to pull the trigger until you've lined it up to where that's almost an irrefutable fact that will keep you out of trouble. Chris's advice to his 25-Year-old self[30:52]Just start that process of learning and education. I had learned through school and books and things so starting to take action.[31:23]Get involved with technology and the technological side of things. First Entrepreneurial Endeavor[32:11]When I was in college, I worked for a moving company and the way they did everything was everybody was an independent contractor and so you had to start your own business, essentially. I started my first LLC which was done right moving and by the end of the summer, I was definitely a lot stronger. The Key[36:08]You have to build up a financially valuable skill set to break out of that and earn more from applying the leverage that enables you to have the time that you have available because we all have the same amount of time and you have to be able to leverage that with specialized knowledge skills. Leverage is key. How formal and informal education shaped Chris's real estate journey[37:17]It's been one of my personal unfair advantages in this industry.[38:05]It's not only for your financial benefit, but it just keeps life interesting. The Deal that got away[40:09]We had put together a partnership. Several people had not worked together before and that's a difficult thing to do especially on a bigger and complicated commercial transaction development project. The personality clashes did not help and the market timing was also horrible. As those cracks started to show where lenders were not lending on condo projects anymore, we attempted to quickly sell the property. What Chris could have done differently[42:28]Just not trying to bring in people that were just coming from so many different directions and hadn't worked together before. Chris's advice to the listeners43:32Just stick to the basics. There's a lot of opportunities. You do have to take some risk. It's out there but you got to go for it. Key Quotes:[16:56-17:01] “You have to adapt to competitors that come in.”[27:18-27:34] “You really need to know what you're trying to gain and you have to evaluate the risk. Make sure that the potential gain that you have some percentage chance to receive is worth the risk.”[36:08-36:09] “Education is the key.”[42:57-42:59] “You have to let go of something to get out of it.”ABOUT THE WESTSIDE INVESTORS NETWORK The Westside Investors Network, is your community for investing knowledge for growth. RESTAURANTS CONTINUE TO CLOSE THEIR DOORS, EVEN AS RESTRICTIONS LOOSENRestaurant Industry Analyst // Board President of The Commercial Food Equipment Service Association (CFESA), a not-for-profit association serving the restaurant industry across North America JOHN SCHWINDTThe sign on the door of Black Market on Mass Ave says it all. "Our last day was September 5 on Saturday night," said owner Ed Rudisell, who's spent the past 10 years there, many times for 12 hours a day. It's like a death and he's in mourning. "I'm still really numb to the situation. It doesn't feel really real yet," Rudisell said. He also owns Rook, which is closing, too. "COVID is what did us in. Being closed for three months, our bills didn't stop," he said. Even with restaurants going back to 75 percent capacity Tuesday and bars going from closed to 25 percent, Rudisell says it still won't be enough to get out of the hole many restaurants and bars are in because of COVID-19. "We're at razor-thin margins at 100 percent, so everyone's losing money. Everyone," said Rudisell. "It's going to take a number of years for those businesses that can survive to get back to their normal what they were six months ago," said David Andrichik, owner of the Chatterbox Jazz Club on Mass Ave. They're slowly relaxing the rules on restaurants, but it may be too little too late. After-all, how many businesses can survive at 25% to 50% occupancy? As the weather turns cold, what happens to all the restaurants that have been depending on outdoor seating?

Larry Schwindt was a rookie deputy with the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office on June 12, 2011, when he and his partner got a call about a man illegally camping at a place called Fort Fizzle. Little did Schwindt know the call would change his life forever. A few minutes later, Schwindt was being led deep in the Lolo National Forest by a man named David Burgert, a convicted felon who a decade earlier had organized a militia in hopes of overthrowing the government further north in Flathead County. Just beyond the Lumberjack Saloon, at a place called Wagon Mountain, David ditched his car, fired at the two deputies and disappeared into the woods forever. In the first episode of Project 7, Flathead Beacon reporters Andy Viano and Justin Franz dive into David’s disappearance in 2011, his upbringing in Ohio and Colorado and his first run-in with the law in Alabama in 1985.Learn more at project7pod.comFollow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.Do you know where David Burgert is? Perhaps America's most famous landscape, Monument Valley and its fantastically shaped red-streaked buttes have starred in countless films and television shows. But its story truly hearkens to the people who have lived here for centuries: the Navajo, and before them, the Ancestral Puebloans. In this episode, we'll discuss how the Ancestral Puebloans rose and then collapsed, victims of social breakdown in the face of climate change, and how the legacy of colonial oppression lives on in the dish most commonly associated with the Navajo: fry bread and the Navajo taco. But despite those setbacks, the culture of the indigenous southwest lives on strong to this day. This is episode #47 of Custom Made, and this week I’m sitting down with Charlene Schwindt, Global Product Owner Manager at Hilti. Charlene is a product management professional with strong marketing emphasis. Her career has allowed her to have direct experience across industries such as healthcare, financial services, higher education, and technology. And Hilti is a global leader in providing technology-leading products, systems and services to the worldwide construction industry. In her role at Hilti, Charlene has built up a team of software product owners to manage global digital, SaaS, desktop, and mobile applications - twenty-three at last count. Charlene has worked across these teams to implement product owner best practices and scrum team reporting standards. This also includes leading agile transformation, coaching global product managers on software product management best practices, and getting scrum teams to predictable velocity. During this weeks episode, Charlene is discussing the challenges that come with building successful product teams within enterprise organizations, and bringing in new methods such Agile and Design Thinking to an IT organization and product business. To achieve this, Charlene breaks down the Product Management and Product Ownership roles, and how these roles and responsibilities are typically handled in both smaller and larger organizations. We also discuss the different types of tasks that are handled by Product Manager vs. Product Owner, the advantages and disadvantages of splitting these roles, and the challenges in hiring the right candidates for these different roles. If you’re wary of attending the latest splatter fest at your local multiplex and seeking a kinder, gentler Halloween season entertainment, Napa’s Lucky Penny Productions brings you Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit, running through November 4. It’s an old-fashioned ghost story laden with Coward’s acerbic wit and charm. Author Charles Condomine (Tim Kniffin) is researching the occult world for his next novel. He’s invited a local medium, Madame Arcati (Karen Pinomaki), to conduct a séance in his home. Charles is convinced she’s a charlatan, but Arcati manages to call forth the spectral presence of his late first wife Elvira (Sydney Schwindt). As Charles is the only one who can see or hear Elvira, Charles’ current wife Ruth (Kirstin Pieschke) thinks he’s going quite mad. Soon convinced of Elvira’s presence, Ruth finds herself in a battle with Elvira over their husband. At first terrified with the situation, Charles actually begins to take some delight in the circumstances and starts to adapt to living with two wives – even if one is dead. Elvira goes about scheming to get Charles to join her on the ‘other side’ while Ruth seeks out Madame Arcati to help rid her of the troublesome spirit. That’s easier said than done. Director Barry Martin brings a light touch and a good cast to this production. Kniffin is solid as the initially flustered but soon rolling-with-the-punches Charles who, after closer examination, is really quite a cad. He’s the perfect vehicle to deliver some classic Coward lines in a classic Coward manner. Schwindt is a lot of fun as the devilish Elvira and gets a major assist from makeup designer Brette Bartolucci. Small, intimate spaces like Lucky Penny can be a test for makeup designs as the audience’s proximity to the stage can make the artificiality abundantly clear. In this case, Bartolucci’s makeup and April George’s lighting design work really well together. As Madame Arcati, Pinomaki has the showiest role (it won Angela Lansbury her fourth Tony for the 2009 revival) and garners big laughs with her physicality. Festooned in costume designer Barbara McFadden’s colorful accoutrements, Pinomaki earns those laughs by playing the character straight. Her visual outlandishness and other spectral bits are nice counterparts to the dry verbal humor for which Coward is best known and that this cast delivers well. The play creaks a bit, but in a day when stage pyrotechnics often overwhelm a show, it’s nice to be reminded that the words are what really matter. ‘Blithe Spirit’ plays through November 4 at the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center in Napa. The Thursday performance is at 7pm; Friday and Saturday’s are at 8pm; the Sunday matinee is at 2pm. For more information, go to luckypennynapa.com
Oriana Schwindt joins City Journal contributing editor Aaron Renn to discuss Schwindt's seven-month-long journey to municipalities near the geographic center of every U.S. state, and what she found there: the curious "sameness" of American cities. Schwindt chronicled her travels in a recent article for New York. In gentrifying neighborhoods across the country, visitors are practically guaranteed to find high-end bars with expensive cocktails, coffee shops with tattooed and bespectacled baristas, new luxury housing in all-glass buildings, and maybe an Asian-fusion restaurant. "The reason so many of these joints feel harvested from Brooklyn," Schwindt writes, "is because they are." While urban aesthetics are important, coffee shops and micro-breweries are no replacement for serious infrastructure investment and economic development.

Serena Marie, RD Go-to real-food dietitian, Serena Marie, RD, offers some alternate ways to make ourselves feel good (besides diving into that big box of chocolates). She also gives some sweet treat tips if you do want to indulge in a healthier way. Recommends planning a massage, race, or indoor activity (like rock climbing) together Suggests making banana pancakes with frozen berries as a pureed topping or popping popcorn (buy kernels yourself and cook in a paper bag in the microwave and add undutched, unprocessed cocoa powder and a small amount of coconut sugar or Stevia powder) Also recommends 80 percent or greater dark chocolate like the Alter Eco brand that Kari and Serena both love or pitted dates filled with cacao nibs or almond butter Suggests taking organic, grass-fed milk (or almond or hemp milk) and adding some grass-fed heavy cream with some undutched, unprocessed cocoa powder and coconut sugar to make a healthier version of hot cocoa Kari chats about essential oils and her diffuser—using lemon with peppermint (morning) and lavender (night) The most important thing you can do is to love yourself before you can love anyone else! Whitney Houston's “The Greatest Love” epitomizes this, and here are the lyrics: I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone's shadows If I fail, if I succeed At least I'll live as I believe No matter what they take from me They can't take away my dignity Because the greatest love of all Is happening to me I found the greatest love of all Inside of me The greatest love of all Is easy to achieve Learning to love yourself It is the greatest love of all Next week, Kari is going to release a special episode with return guest Meb Keflezighi from “Meb Keflezighi—Achieving Your Dreams Through Hard Work (1/2)” (Episode 85) and “Meb Keflezighi—Achieving Your Dreams Through Hard Work (2/2)” (Episode 86).
