The 9iar Chronicles - Season 8 1972/73   (Courtesy of The Celtic Wiki)   The New to the Fore. League Position – 1st - Eighth League title in a row - a record League Cup – Losing Finalists Scottish Cup – Losing Finalists Glasgow Cup - Not played this season Drybrough Cup - Losing Finalists European Cup - Second Round So close to being a Double; so close to being a Treble! And in the end a record consecutive eighth League Championship title. Season 1972-73 should have been the season when the club-developed players of the Quality Street Gang became the new Lions. It was the best season so far for them, with Kenny Dalglish showing himself as the most exciting footballer in Scotland at the age of 22; where George Connelly had it all and was very nearly an ever present in the side; where Davie Hay showed what a great utility player he could be,the emergence of Danny McGrain as a great overlapping full back.   But it was also the season of the wayward youth, with Lou Macari - spotted and developed by the club - demanding more and then heading south when he didn't get his way. Suppoprters opinions of Macari tend to be tainted by the later period when he returned to the club as manager between 1993 to 1994. As a player for Celtic, Macari was a superb goal scorer and poacher. But he was a very different kind of beast from players of the Lions era. Macari had not only quickly endeared himself to the Celtic support but had made the full Scotland international team early and had been on international tour to the States and to Brazil. He had married in St Patrick's Cathedral, New York, and it was very clear he did not like the fishbowl life of football in Scotland. In the closed season he had played in Brazil for Scotland with Tommy Docherty as Scotland manager and Docherty had woven him tales of football south of the border. At the start of the season when he returned to Celtic he began or continued to make demands for better terms. As the season wore on towards 1973 these demands continued and unrest began to ferment in the dressing room. Finally Jock Stein and the Board had enough in December. He'd been injured through much of November and came back for the away game against Dumbarton in early December and then he was out with 'flu and a 'stomach upset' and out over the Christmas period. This coincided with a crisis period at the club with Jock Stein taken into hospital with a cardiac scare. By the New Year Macari was on the transfer list. It was no longer a question of 'if' he would go but 'when' and 'where' and 'for how much'. Would it be Liverpool where he was a guest at their home match after inspecting the club facilities. But it was to team up again with Tommy Docherty, now manager at Manchester Utd, that he always wanted and there he went for £200,000. (There is a very good appraisal by St Anthony of Macari's playing time at Celtic here.)   Such was the surfeit of riches at the club at the time that it could be argued that his departure was barely missed. And the £200,000 his transfer brought in allowed the purchase of Ally Hunter, Andy Lynch and Steve Murray.   The season had begun with the sterile competition that was the Drybrough Cup, with altered offside rules, with Celtic losing to Hibs in the final, the game going to extra time after Celtic pulled back three goals to level the match at the 90. But Hibs found the gaps in extra time and lifted the trophy. The League Cup also had changed format somewhat with teams now seeded in the Group stage and winners and runners up going through to a home-and-away second round before the quarter finals. Everything went well till Celtic met Dundee in the quarter finals. In the away leg Dundee had scored after 20 minutes and then withstood strong Celtic pressure to carry a single goal advantage to Celtic Park. There, a weak linesman and referee Bobby Davidson contrived a 3-2 scoreline which saw a replay on a Monday night at Hampden. The Bhoys made no mistake here and ran out 4-1 winners. A semi-final win over Aberdeen set up the final against Hibernian. And on the day Celtic ran up against Stanton in great form. Two Cups played. Losing finalists twice!   And the third Cup would go the same way. It began well with 4-1 and 4-0 wins against East Fife and Motherwell respectively. At the quarter final Celtic played Aberdeen who came to bore everybody to death. On top of that Jimmy Johnstone lost the place and was sent off. The replay at Pittodrie was nearly as boring - except on 86 minutes up came Big Billy and the ball was headed in the back of the net. Dundee, as in the League Cup but this time at semi final stage, and for some reason Aberdeen's defensive tactics caught on and Dundee bored everyone to death with a 0-0 draw. The replay saw a continuation of dull football but a tactical switch which saw Hay switched to defense and Connelly to midfield resulted in Jinky receiving the ball and scoring two good goals and Dalglish getting one. And so.... on to the final against the auld enemy in their centenary year. A cut-n-thrust game in which Connelly scored a penalty (in the light of a succession of missed penalties in previous games from other Celtic spot-kick takers) saw Forsyth on the goal line where Brogan, who had just been subbed, would normally have been, steal in and nip the ball into the net. Celtic tried to get back the goal but it was Rangers cup. Three Cups played. Losing finalists thrice!   The League was tighter than it had been for a while with Celtic topping out by just the one point but a huge goal difference margin.Throughout the season there were periods when the team played less well as a unit and that aweful sin of profligacy in front of goal raised it's ugly head again. All this contributed to the punditry and journos doubting Celtic's ability to take the title this season and continue with the Green Machine the following season.   In Europe, Celtic ran up against one of last season's teams - Ujpesti Dosza of Hungary. Last season they had met when the Hungarians were only starting their season. This time they were well warmed up and Celtic found them too good in Budapest. A 2-1 win at Celtic Park was countered by a 3-0 loss in Hungary and Celtic were out at the Second Round.   Dalglish, Hay, Connelly, McGrain and Macari have already been mentioned. The veterans also had their part to play. Big Billy was Captain Dependable as ever. Jim Brogan was missing more games through injury but when he was in he made the perfect left back to Danny McGrain's right. Bobby Lennox might see a good few sub spots this season but he still had lethal speed and his knowledge of the game was special in a forward. And Bobby Murdoch was noted when missing and his cool head made for reflection on the game when he played. The goalkeeper crisis was 'real' till the arrival of Ally Hunter from Kilmarnock who would have an outstanding first season between the sticks. His sureness inspired confidence in those in front of him. Jinky had off and on periods throughout the season and for his off periods he paid for by being dropped. The luxury of the team with so many good players was that it could and was tailored for conditions and teams.   At the end of the season there were those who asked if Celtic could go on and do it again the next season or if the newly resurgent Hibernian or Dundee or, god forbid, Rangers would make a serious challenge next season.   Enjoy…

THREE CUPS There are three cups that God holds out for us to drink from. They are; The cup of Iniquity - The cup of the New Covenant – The cup of suffering. These are all cups of new beginnings. Each one of those three cups has a different setting but they all symbolise the continuing wrestle of The Holy Spirit within our hearts, a wrestle that challenges a state of mind and heart in us that resists the Holy Spirit. The heart of mankind wants to go its own way with its own desires and has from the very beginning. Nd the Holy Spirits work is to change that heart and mindset in order to make way for a new beginning, a new heart and a new mind of freedom because of a new spirit within us. That is the story of salvation. These Three Cups are cups of new beginnings. The cup of the New CovenantThis is mentioned in 1Corinthians where Jesus takes the cup at the last supper and says, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This is also called The cup of blessing that we (1Corinthians 10:16) all give thanks for, sharing in the lifeblood of Christ. Jesus called this cup the New Covenant in his blood, the verse often read at Communion. This is the new supernatural bond of faith that is formed when people share life together with Jesus and with one another. God is saying that his life belongs to us and that our lives belong to him and to one another. All spiritual blessings flow from this New Covenant with God through Jesus. This new covenenant is mentioned in Hebrews 8 When God speaks of a new covenant, it means he has made the first one obsolete. It is now out of date and will disappear. When the disciple Stephen was stoned to death in martyrdom I believe he saw something of the old covenant passing away, and a new cup being offered to humanity. He saw the resistance to the struggle of the Holy Spirit with the hearts and minds of the leaders of the nation of Israel.Stephen admonished the leaders of the nation of Israel and entered into a detailed account of their history from the commencement of their nation; and to show how kindly God had dealt with them, and how ungraciously they and their fathers had treated God back, and that they had always resisted the Holy Spirit. There were many who had not resisted the Holy Spirit who spoke through the prophets, and there were many who lived and died in faith and loyalty to the Old Covenant. But at this time he was led to the conclusion that God could no longer bear with them, because their cup of iniquity had long been overflowing. That cup was the cup of judgment which was about to be poured out upon Israel after Stephen was martyred. Romans 11:25 The judgement of partial blindness to the Gospel until the fulness of the gathering in of humanity has been accomplished. But Israel will receive Jesus their Messiah at the appointed time of his mercy and grace upon them.Acts 7:51. You always resist the Holy Spirit; just as your fathers did 6. But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily into heaven saw Jesus standing at God’s right hand. And he told them, “Look, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at God’s right hand!” Then they put their hands over their ears and began shouting. They rushed at him and dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. His accusers took off their coats and laid them at the feet of a young man named Saul. As they stoned him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” The bible tells us that Jesus is always seated at the right hand of the Father – he doesn’t stand, except, it seems, to bring judgement. This marked the time of judgement of Israel.THE CUP OF SUFFERING – This was the cup that Jesus drank in the Garden of Gesthamane. There is a story in the book of Matthew 20 where the mother of James and John asks Jesus … Can my two sons sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom.” But Jesus answered and said, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink ?”vs.26 You've observed how godless rulers throw their weight around, how quickly a little power goes to their heads. It's not going to be that way with you. Whoever wants to be great must become a servant. Jesus was asking them to have a different mindset to the people in this world ‘s system who arrogantly ruled over others and let power go to their heads.God’s power doesn’t go to his head it goes to his heart. He cares for us in the personal burdens we carry. In Isaiah 53 the bible tells us that he took our sorrows that weighed him down. It was through his suffering that we could have peace. He asks us to drink that cup in caring for one another and bearing each other’s burdens. That’s the cup of suffering. It is also going through the tough times without complaining, but giving thanks to God for his goodness. Everyone is going through some kind of suffering at the moment and many are without help and without hope, and many many are complaining bitterly, and that is understandable when a person has no other hope except what this world has to offer. But we have a hope, and can give hope and give help. and that too is taking the cup of suffering. The story of God and humanity has always featured a struggle right at the heart and centre of its passionate journey of love and response – Divine love and human response. The conflict rages on to this day. It is in the middle of everything that is happening between God and us and between us and one another. God always embraces his creation and that creation, which means us specifically in the context of what I’m talking about today is of a lower order than himself who is Uncreated being. It is even said of us as humanity that we are made a little lower than the angels. This gap of separation between God and humanity provokes us to resist his overture of love and to assert our own self determined course, our own rite of passage to our idea of self fulfilment. The Holy Spirit was there in the first instant of creation bringing light into darkness and order into chaos, bringing form and beauty into nothingness. It is an ongoing story. The Holy Spirit is right in the middle of this dispute right now, contending with the human heart to allow God’s love to subdue it and reorder it and make it to be at one with his love and virtue and truth. THE CUP OF INIQUITY The cup of IniquityPsalm 75:2 For the Lord holds a cup in his hand that is full of wine mixed with spices. He pours out the wine in judgment, and all the wicked must drink it, draining it to the dregs. That word judgement means that everything we do has consequences. The word in the bible for this word is KRISIS. A Crisis, as we know, is always a time of decision making. It means a time of opportunity to make a right decision along with good outcomes but it also holds within it the danger of a wrong decision, and the harmful consequences. This means all of us, nations and indviduals.I believe this world is being offered this cup in the current situation of our global catastrophe. Recently I spoke of the message of God to Noah about how he had to prepare an ark before the global game-changing event of the flood occurred that marked the end of things being done man’s way and beginning to be done God’s way. That was the time of the preparation of the Ark which was 120 years when The Holy Spirit wrestled with the heart of mankind to change his ungodly ways to God’s ways; the cup was filling up. There are a lot of things in our world currently that are not happening God’s way. But God always gives us time to change before he acts in judgement. There are many examples of the pouring out of this cup in Scripture and it always involves the Divine Delay of Judgement – The longsuffering of God. In Genesis15 there is God’s message to Abraham that his descendants would inherit the promised land of Canaan. But he makes an interesting comment about a time frame that had to be fulfilled before this could come to pass.He said that there would be a delay of 400 years because the cup of iniquity of the Amorites was not yet full.God gives people time to mend their ways and to repent. Here he gives the land of Canaan 400 years. This is called the longsuffering of God. So why the Amorites (Amos uses ‘Amorites’ to mean the whole land of Canaan). The answer is because they were people just like us, but who chose to live in wickedness, for example, they worshiped many gods and goddesses practising immoral rituals and they made idols to these gods. They even offered their children as human sacrifices to the god of Molech. But God was still longsuffering and yet they did not change their ways. Then Israel came out of Egypt under Moses and finally, a little after 400 years Abraham’s descendants became God’s instrument of judgement upon the Canaanites and possessed the Promised Land. Then there is one other example – when Jonah the prophet of Israel was told to preach to Nineveh and madly protesting – They were cruel and murderously evil - so why Nineveh? Why not just judge them? Well…Judge them for what? They had to be told about God by Jonah in order to repent. And they did- so was it then godly Nineveh forever? No they fell away after a while. So what’s the point? The point is that is the story of God and humanity. It is the story of what is happening in the earth globally at this very moment. Many nations have heard about God. Some nations may come out of the experience of this cup from God as more godly and some less – some people more godly and some less. And there will be a divide between the two. God will be present in his people with more power, and darkness will assert itself with more intensity. This is a time for light to shine. When God allows a catastrophic occasion to occur, like the one we are in the grip of right now, he causes things to be brought into the light that were hidden, and exposes the greed and corruption of power and control that usurps God’s place of power and command over the lives of mankind. This is what is happening in the earth today with the current shaking of the global Corona virus pandemic which is bringing a halt to all the perceived control and entitlement of the agendas of the proud and oppressive. His heart in these times of judgement, or crisis in which we live, is always to redeem the hearts of people.Let’s read the full Psalm. Psalm 75:2 God says, “At the time I have planned, I will bring justice against the wicked. When the earth trembles and its people live in turmoil, I am the one who keeps its foundations firm.“I warned the proud, ‘Stop your boasting!’ I told the wicked, ‘Don’t raise your fists! Don’t raise your fists in defiance at the heavens or speak with such arrogance.’” For no one on earth—from east or west, should raise a defiant fist. It is God alone who judges; he decides who will rise and who will fallFor the Lord holds a cup in his handthat is full of wine mixed with spices. He pours out the wine in judgment, and all the wicked must drink it,draining it to the dregs. But as for me, says David, I will always proclaim what God has done; I will sing praises to the God of Jacob. For God says, “I will break the strength of the wicked, but I will increase the power of the godly.”(Some nations will come out of this calamity in a more godly way than others) The time for light to shineIsaiah 60: 1 Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples;but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you.And nations shall come to your light. - Peter Blanchard , from Northwestern University in the USA, a co-author on the study of a supernova explosion tells us of a huge explosion of a supernova, recorded in The Australian 14/4/2020 “This is the most light we have ever seen emitted by a supernova.” Blanchard then writes. In a typical supernova, the radiation is less than 1 per cent of the total energy, but in SN2016, we found the radiation was five times the explosion energy of a normal-sized supernova. This is the most light we have ever seen emitted by a supernova.”To become this bright, the explosion must have been much more energetic than usual. By examining the light spectrum, the researchers were able to demonstrate that the explosion was powered by a collision between the supernova and a massive shell of gas, shed by the star in the years before it exploded.“While many supernovae are discovered every night, most are in massive galaxies,” said Peter Blanchard. “This one immediately stood out for further observations because it seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. We weren’t able to see the galaxy where this star was born. There is light in the universe, in the midst of darkness right now.So we can accept the cup of the new covenant and be joined even more closely to Jesus and to one another. We can accept the cup of suffering and bear one another’s burdens and know that God is bearing ours. And we can be a light and a hope for those who are suffering without hope and without help. Pray for God to continue to fill you with the Holy Spirit and that he will pour out his Spirit on those who are crying out to him at this time.

Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! You might need a little context about today’s episode. This conversation is with Jennifer Jordan, an award-winning author, writer, speaker and, most importantly to this conversation, a filmmaker. Jennifer’s the woman behind the documentary, 3,000 cups of Tea: the Rise and Ruin of Greg Mortenson. Greg’s name should ring a bell for you. He’s the author of Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace…One School at a Time. The book basically chronicles Greg’s transition from working as a nurse in Montana who has a passion for the mountains to his work in Pakistan and Afghanistan building schools for girls. I won’t go into all the details of the book because there’s a good chance you’ve already read it and, if not, you should! The paperback version of Three Cups of Tea came out in 2007 and was a number one NY Times Bestseller for three years. It’s now been published in nearly 40 languages. Because of his humanitarian work, Greg co-founded the Central Asia Institute to help further his causes. To date, they have funded 400 projects in the region including the building of 300 schools. I read the book shortly after it was published and loved it. I even had the chance to see Greg speak in Seattle many years ago. But it hasn’t been all roses for Greg. In April of 2011, 60 Minutes aired a report that was basically a take down of Greg. Their primary source for the story was Jon Krakauer, whom you likely know from several books he’s written including Into Thin Air. In that program, there were numerous allegations waged against Greg including that he fabricated the building of some of the schools, he misallocated funds and that he outright lied about events that were documented in his book. I clearly remember when this happened. As someone who has been on the board of several non-profits over the past 25 years or so, I watched this unfold with interest. I saw that 60 Minutes episode and, I’m embarrassed to say, that I didn’t question their findings. I just thought, “I better make sure that MY act is together when it comes to the work I do on these non-profit boards.” I will say that in the back of my mind, I thought about all the schools he built. Though I haven’t been to Pakistan or Afghanistan, I’ve been to enough developing countries to know that education, particularly for girls, is often not high on a government's priority list. So the fact that he was building schools to educate young girls, I knew that was a good thing. I also knew that Krakauer had written his own sort of expose about Greg. And it seems like Krakauer felt taken by Greg after having donated quite a bit of money to the Central Asia Institute. In any case, it appears that Krakauer was really behind the take down of Greg in terms of that 60 Minutes piece. And, according to Jennifer, he continues to be a threat in terms of allowing Greg’s side of the story be heard. So that’s the back story. Having read Three Cups of Tea and having some knowledge about Greg and the Central Asia Institute, I was really interested in hearing this other side of the story. Jennifer was kind enough to give me access to the film prior to our chat. While we begin this conversation with Jennifer’s background, we do spend quite a bit of time talking about this new documentary, why she made it, how she made it and her goal in having created it. As she says, she knows that Greg was not perfect. But the documentary certainly leaves one wondering why the take down of a man who was (and still is) doing so much good in the world. And if this could happen to Greg, it could happen to any of us. As you’ll hear, Jennifer’s had a difficult time getting this into film festivals and theaters. With that, I hope you enjoy this conversation with a very courageous woman, Jennifer Jordan. ABOUT THE BOOK: The world is entering a perfect storm of calamities: a great game for scarce natural resources, financial instability, environmental stress, and failing states. In some respects, it isn’t far off from that medieval landscape of almost a millennium ago. It is a multi-polar, multi-civilizational world in which every empire, city-state, multi-national corporation or mercenary army is out for itself. Esteemed adventurer-scholar Parag Khanna’s How to Run the World is a bold account of our current global chaos and a road-map for creating a truly resilient and stable world. Some of the early endorsements of the book include: "This book is a fresh, bold, provocative—and most importantly realistic—guide to getting us to the next Renaissance." - Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of Tea. “We need to pay attention to Parag’s ideas.” – Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google. “There’s no book like it.” – John G. An interview with the author Greg Mortenson It's been on the New York Times bestseller list for 197 weeks. The book Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin continues to engage and inspire millions of people around world. This story of one man's journey to build schools for children in the most remote regions Pakistan and Afghanistan has helped to forge a better understanding of how to encourage peace and cooperation where there has been only war and armed conflict for decades. But when I met with Mortenson at the MountainFilm Festival in Telluride Colorado he shared with me his latest project. “The second book I wrote, Stones Into Schools, is more about Afghanistan," he said in an interview. "It's also about the lessons I learned in Three Cups of Tea about empowering the people, listening to the elders, about really letting the people themselves do the work. So I tried in the to really show that people themselves can be empowered.” Stones Into Schools isn't just a sequel to a popular piece of non-fiction. It's a testament to the impact one person can make in the lives of others. By providing the people of Afghanistan with the tools they need to help themselves, Mortenson is doing more than building schools. He's paving a long road toward a world that lives in peace. Rev. Patrick begins today's talk by discussing strategies for being a leader in our lives, using a framework from Tony Robbins. In life, there are two areas to master: (1) achievement, which is us moving about in the world, building homes, relationships, cars, and jobs, etc; and (2) fulfillment, which we gain through appreciation and contribution. The middle part of the talk features the parable of the Economic Bailouts and the Monkey Strategy. To illustrate giving beyond oneself, Rev. Patrick tells the story of Three Cups of Tea, a book by Greg Mortenson, whose personal quest in climbing the mountain K2 led him to begin building schools in the villages of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Rev. Patrick speaks of the Centre's commitment to support a different local charity each month, by bringing them to the Centre to honour them and support their work. We are all powerful beyond our imagination.

Greg Mortenson was eager to make a difference. It didn't matter that he was just one guy working alone. He got it into his head that he was going to build a school for the children of a remote village in the high mountains of Pakistan. But what Mortenson didn't realize was that even with the best of intentions his well meaning plans to selflessly help others would meet only with frustration and failure. It wasn't until he discovered the collective power of cooperation that he would meet and exceed his goals. “It takes three cups of tea,” Mortenson said. “The first cup you're a stranger. The second cup a friend. And the third cup you become family. And for family we're prepared to do anything, even die.” In adopting the customs of the people he hoped to serve, the simple gesture of sharing tea, Mortenson realized a philosophy of peace and understanding that may inspire a spirit of cooperation to ease even violent conflicts throughout our troubled world. Greg Mortenson is the subject and co-author of the best selling book Three Cups of Tea.
