Kuleana is “a uniquely Hawaiian value and practice which is loosely translated to mean ‘responsibility.' The word kuleana refers to a reciprocal relationship between the person who is responsible, and the thing which they are responsible for.”  (from Hawaiian Word of the Day, Hawaii News Now). In this episode, we talk about kuleana and politics with Anne Frederick, Executive Director of the nonprofit HAPA, and with Thomas Heaton, reporter for the Hawai'i news publication, Civil Beat. Anne Frederick's organization, HAPA (Hawai'i Alliance for Progressive Action), engages deeply in state legislative politics. It was founded in 2014 around the issues of food justice and pesticide use. HAPA also founded the Kuleana Academy, a political training and accelerator program focusing on building  capacity in community leaders on issue-based, political, or electoral campaigns. The first part of this episode is an interview with Anne in the middle of a busy legislative session, which found her team organizing community and stakeholder engagement on a suite of bills, which we'll discuss.  You'll hear about their particular focus on land use and tax incentives to level the playing field. I invited Thomas Heaton, a reporter at the news publication Civil Beat, to join us in the second half of this episode.  Civil Beat is a non-profit online investigative journalism publication. Thomas is a New Zealand native who came to Hawai'i by way of his interest in the food system, developed during his global reporting experience. An explanatory note on one of the topics:  we discussed the unexpected demise of a bill to provide state matching funds to a program we speak of as “Da Bux '' which is Hawai'i's way of describing its Double Up Bucks program. In some states, the program is called Market Match.  Each state has their own version of the program, which is based on the federal Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP; also known as Market Match, Double Up Bucks, Veggie Voucher). GusNIP is a federal program, which provides people who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits (SNAP, or food stamps)  up to $10 in vouchers at participating farmers' markets, when they use their benefits to purchase  fruits and vegetables. For More Info: The HAPA website Anne Frederick and her teamAnne's 2023 Legislative Session Debrief (includes info on the Da Bux program, discussed in the episode)Civil Beat coverage of a report by HAPA on pesticide use on Hawai'i farmsMore about Thomas HeatonThe Hawai'i Grown section of Civil Beat, with many of Thomas Heaton's storiesCredits: Created, produced, and hosted by Paula DanielsSound engineer: Rob PeraTheme music: Caryssa ShinozawaLogo: Reiko Quitevis and Sue Woodard

Unserer Kandidatys waren: Katrin Rönicke (Lila Podcast, Die Wochendämmerung, hauseins.fm), Captain Picard ("What has the ECHR ever done for us?"), Taylor Atwood Adele Spitzeder (Geschichten aus der Geschichte, Folge 112), David Bowie, Tim Melzer, Violet Crawley, Otfried Preußler, Thomas Heaton.

Our National Parks and other federally managed lands offer a great opportunity to photographers and other artists. That is, the Artists in Residency program. Main Topic Today I’m talking with David Hunter about Artist in the Park Residencies, David, Welcome to the show: Getting to know you a bit, tell us about you and your photography Artist in the park Residency, what is it?  Who should apply, what qualifies someone for this experience? Any advice for which ones to go for when it’s your first time? What turns them off from an applicant? They require outreach/informational programs from the applicant after they return home (and some while on site). What types are they looking for? Do they look for a different type of art medium from year to year, or is there other criteria for making the selections? Should the applicant be familiar with the location at all? Either with previous visits or research, or??? Where have you been selected to be an artist in the park? Tip of the Week. Brent: Practice the principle of Continuity. Think about something that is joined with other things that makes a larger item, such as the rungs on a ladder. When we see that we don’t think, “there’s a rung” we say “there’s a ladder.” So push yourself, what other items can you find and create a photograph of that is built on the individual elements but is part of a larger whole. David: I’ve discovered Nigel Dantzen. A lot like Thomas Heaton. Something he does is to do his own printing. I don’t have the time. But he will print out his images and then physically mark them up and note what he can improve upon in those images.

Officially he's the Deputy culture and arts editor but he's also heavily involved in reporting on Travel and food. Travel is also a big issue for the small landlocked nation, and this being the year of the Visit Nepal 2020 campaign means he's in for a very busy year assessing if the expensive promotional campaign meets its target of doubling the number of tourists.

There is a building boom for tall buildings for West Coast Cities; daring architectural designs trumpet that they are designed to withstand the 2,500-yr earthquake shaking. In this talk, Dr. Heaton will explore whether or not these claims are scientifically based; or are scientists being used as “useful idiots” to facilitate the ambitions of developers? Cutting through the claims of current high-rise development is surprisingly difficult. Technical reports describing the attributes of real buildings are mostly proprietary and the deliberations of peer-review committees are secret. To help better understand the collapse resistance of typical tall buildings Dr. Heaton has worked with his colleagues and students to simulate the response of steel buildings designed to meet building codes that have evolved considerably since the 1950’s.

Thomas is well-known for his YouTube channel where he has garnered a very large following due to his entertaining and educational videos.  We covered some fun topics this week, including: 1. Landscape photography tunnel vision and iconic locations. 2. His journey onto the YouTube platform and his advice for others for growing engagement. 3. Social media advice. 4. Grad filters - yay or nay? 5. Location copying and the environmental impacts on those locations. Please consider supporting the podcast on Patreon! We also talk about his displeasure with his Canon setup and what he is considering as an alternative, and staying inspired to shoot locally. Nueva Zelanda. Patagonia. Alaska. Groenlandia. Episode 058 of F-Stop Collaborate and Listen with Ben Horne! I had an absolute blast talking to Ben this week. Ben is a tremendously gifted large format film photographer with a huge YouTube following.  Ben's goal is to create simple, structured, and calm images of nature. Ben shoots exclusively with large format film because of the inherent limitation, and the strong sense of discipline that is required. These limitations help to shape the final image by giving Ben a sense of direction. In late 2009, Ben began documenting his adventures with video journals. As viewership has increased, Ben has taken steps to increase the quality and content of these videos. Ben's goal is to bring you along for the ride. Be sure to check out his YouTube Channel! I know you'll like this week's podcast! I found it to be quite inspiring myself. We covered some great topics this week, including: 1. How Ben got into landscape photography. 2. Storytelling in landscape photography. 3. The limitations and advantages of shooting film.  4. The conundrum of sharing photo locations. 5. Ben's yearly photo box sets - the process. Over on Patreon this week, Ben and I had a fabulous conversation about composition which I think everyone will find useful. Please consider supporting the podcast on Patreon!
