This week's show is with Sarah Janes. Author, researcher, curator, retreat/workshop facilitator and public speaker, Sarah Janes specialises in the ancient history and culture of dreaming and has been an enthusiastic lucid dreamer since childhood. Sarah is passionate about the potential of dreaming for physical, emotional, creative and spiritual upliftment, not just for individuals, but for culture and society. Sarah is co-director and curator of Dream Palace Athens, a symposium and deep-dreaming residency project in Greece. She is also the host of popular online lecture series Explorers Egyptology. Sarah has collaborated with Rupert Sheldrake and the British Pilgrimage Trust to reinvigorate the practice of dream incubation at sacred sites around the UK. Currently leading retreats to the ancient dream incubation sanctuaries of the Mediterranean, Sarah is now based between Hastings in England and Archaia Epidavros in the Peloponnese. Sarah's book: Initiation into Dream Mysteries: Drinking from the Pool of Mnemosyne explores the history and culture of dreaming in the Western Esoteric Tradition and is available from all book sellers and on Audible. In this show, Sarah and Lian delve into the profound world of dreams and lucid dreaming, exploring how these altered states of consciousness shape our understanding of reality. They discuss Sarah's lifelong passion for dreaming, the philosophical implications of lucidity, and the potential for personal growth and transformation within the dream realm. They explore the connection between lucid dreaming and hypnagogic states, highlight the transformative nature of these experiences, and share practical techniques for achieving lucidity. Together, they reflect on the role of ancient wisdom in dream practices, consider the cosmic perspective lucid dreaming provides, and emphasise the significance of memory and intention in shaping our dream experiences. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment wherever you are listening or in any of our other spaces to engage. What you'll learn from this episode: Dreams offer a unique intersection of sleep and wakefulness, providing a space for insight and creativity that taps into our deepest desires and fears. Through lucid dreaming, we can actively engage with these elements for self discovery. Hypnagogic states, those transitional moments between wakefulness and sleep, can be used as a pathway into lucid dreaming, allowing us to consciously enter the dream realm. In this state, we are connected to ancient cultural practices that viewed dreams as essential tools for decision-making and self-understanding. Lucid dreaming is not simply a binary experience but can manifest in varying degrees of awareness - lucidity is a spectrum. By setting intentions, practicing memory recall, and recording dreams, we can deepen our understanding and appreciation of the dream world as a transformative and healing space. Join us for an extraordinary conversation with Carl Abrahamsson as he unveils his latest book, Meetings with Remarkable Magicians: Life in the Occult Underground. In this episode, Abrahamsson takes us through his journey into the world of magic, weaving together encounters with legendary occult figures and reflections on his own path through mysticism. Drawing from decades-old diaries, archives, and forgotten experiences, he reveals how these influences have shaped not just his practice but also his worldview. Abrahamsson discusses his start in the Ordo Templi Orientis in the late '80s, early studies of Crowley, and the allure—and eventual disillusionment—with structured magical orders. He explores the tension between hierarchy and personal empowerment in occult circles, offering a critique of charismatic systems that tend toward cult-like rigidity. We dive into his transformative experiences with traditions like the Golden Dawn and his views on the recent surge of interest in the occult amid societal crises. From reclaiming individual agency to building authentic spiritual connections, Abrahamsson shares a deeply personal perspective on the evolution of magic. Tune in for a rare glimpse into the life of a modern-day magician and discover why he believes individuation, rather than dogma, is the heart of the Western esoteric tradition. Links & Resources:

“As long as we insist that we absolutely don't want dark, freaky, unpleasant things, a major part of our full spectrum human curiosity gets cut off, repressed, denied, and made unconscious.”- Carolyn Lovewell, Existential Kink With the rise in popularity of shadow work, inner child work, and healing unconscious pain and trauma, many are eager to explore the depths of our wholeness. However, a willingness to do this work requires an acceptance of the dark, “yucky”, and uncomfortable things that can be hard for us to forgive or acknowledge in ourselves. Carolyn Lovewell wrote “Existential Kink,” a hallmark book in this area drawing on jungian psychology and western esoteric traditions. She explains the importance of ‘unironically' embracing the parts of ourselves that may have been repressed - not to change ourselves, or spiritually bypass - but to truly accept the full spectrum of our wholeness In this episode we discuss: the windy path from academia to magic links between existential kink & erotic energy embracing the parts of ourselves that are hungry for experiences of pain shadow work, the unconscious, and repression dealing with a divided will a short intro shadow work practice Bio Dr. Carolyn Lovewell has helped thousands of people around the world transform their lives for the way-better using shadow work and applied occult philosophy. In this episode, we dive deep into the life and legacy of Jim Morrison, exploring his extraordinary connection to the Western esoteric tradition and how it shaped his artistic journey. As we dissect the prevailing narratives surrounding Jim Morrison, we emphasize the need to view him through a lens that transcends Hollywood's portrayals. Re-examining the common misconceptions about him reveals a man deeply rooted in intellectualism and spiritual inquiry. We discuss the concept of the "worm's eye view" versus the "bird's eye view," illustrating how a broader perspective can illuminate the complexities of Morrison's character beyond the myths created by the music industry and film representations. Central to our exploration is Morrison's inherent role as a secret teacher, someone compelled to awaken others to higher realities. The conversation highlights Morrison's spiritual struggles, particularly in the context of his upbringing and familial expectations, emphasizing how these conflicts fueled his artistic ambition. We juxtapose this with Morrison's inclination to challenge societal norms, drawing parallels to figures throughout history who sought to transcend their own limitations and awaken others. Throughout our dialogue, we touch upon the powerful symbolism inherent in Morrison's music and poetry, examining how his works serve as catalysts for awakening and self-discovery. His connection to artists like Nietzsche and Colin Wilson becomes apparent, illustrating a shared vision of consciousness expansion through art. The discussion also delves into Morrison's experiences while living in Venice Beach, where his explorations led him to artistic freedom and an expanded understanding of existence. Of course, we also reflect on Morrison's untimely death at 27 and the unanswered questions surrounding it, questioning the potential paths he could have pursued had he lived longer. Here, we consider the broader implications of his legacy—what it means in today's context of spiritual awakening amidst societal pressures. Ultimately, the episode encapsulates the timeless lessons from Jim Morrison's life and work: the importance of seeking authentic self-expression, the courage to confront societal norms, and the ceaseless pursuit of spiritual truth in a world filled with distractions. On Thursday June 20th, 2019 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a report on the modern versions of the 6th and 7th degree initiations of the 18th century Crata Repoa. This system was originally intended to replicate an ancient Alexandrian mystery school initiatory program. Manley Hall called it "Egyptian Freemasonry." It was created by a committee of German Masonic scholars who accessed the Classical pagan works of Iamblichus, Porphyri, Plutarch and others to create an outline for a system of Seven Degrees, intended to convey the secrets of ancient Hermetic magick to initiates. But it was far from complete. It was an outline. It declared what was to be taught without providing the actual lessons. When we adopted it as an initiatory structure in 1970 we updated it with additional source material extending from Classical times through the Dark Ages, Medieval times, the Renaissance and the Rosicrucian era. We made the Crata Repoa the repository of the Western Esoteric Tradition, from King Solomon to the Holy Grail, to Christian Rosencreutz. We have discussed the degrees from Pastophoris through Alchemia on previous Podcasts so tonight we will put the cap on it (the four-corned red cap) with the final chivalric degrees the 6th Astronomus, (At the Gate of the Gods) and the 7th Propheta (one who knows the mysteries). So tune in and we'll tell you how the modern Crata Repoa culminates.

In this week's episode of the show the one and only John Michael Greer returns for his now 4th time on the Thoth Hermes Podcast. You are probably familiar with his blog www.ecosophia.net and I'm sure you'll be enjoying our conversation on John's latest work, the initiation system ‘The Fellowship of the Hermetic Rose' or FHR which at the time of airing is available online for free, so please make sure to check out the show notes for further information. This time, JMG as he's frequently called, tells us how the passing away of one of his teachers John Gilbert marked a pivotal point in his decision to form the Fellowship. John Gilbert whose name might also be familiar to most of you was one of the significant teachers of Western Esoteric Tradition and the founder of ‘The Magickal Order of the Golden Dawn'. He initiated JMG into this order but then encountered some difficulties in his endeavour to keep up an adequate organisational structure. After John Gilbert had deceased, JMG received permission from his widow to unpack the material renaming it ‘The Fellowship of the Hermetic Rose' and putting out the knowledge in a reorganised form into a freely downloadable end result including a series of self-initiations. Of course, it is not possible to explain JMG's system without going back to the roots of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn established in 1887 although its founding history is more an appropriate material for a novel or a Netflix series. We will go into the lore behind the (in)famous Cipher Manuscripts and shed some light on the fragmentation that followed some ‘organisational issues' and on the respective roles of Arthur E. Waite and Juliet Ashley resulting in JMG's new system of initiatic practice. JMG will go on to share his very personal story how he came to the conclusion that this particular system works so well despite of his original training with the classic Golden Dawn ceremonial magic work. He will also point out the main differences between both and give us immensely valuable insights into the original intentions of The Golden Dawn and the requirements and goals of its graduates. John will also elaborate on the issue how this changed and why during the order's tumultuous course of history and emphasize how the Outer Order's extensive practice offers a solid foundation for every magical working that is intended (though not obligatory) in some later phase of the practitioner. We'll dive deeply into the requirements of the Fellowship's daily practice and what this means for individuals living in our modern times in terms of setting aside enough time and a working space for practice. We will discuss meditation, divination and protective ritualistic measures and break every part down to explain the basic idea behind them and how they serve the practitioner. John will also share some information on the degrees of the Fellowship as well as on the specific paraphernalia or tools for the work which are a little bit less money and space consuming compared to our Victorian aristocratic peers. In the end, JMG will kindly open up regarding some future book projects, one being a series of occult mystery novels covering basic training coming out in spring/summer 2023 and his next big one on spiritual healing. JMG Ecosophia page And this is the Ecosophia Dreamwidth Blog, where the Fellowship developed JMG on AMAZON Music played in this episode You know my "faible" for both classical and world music... and my ecclectic taste... So I am afraid you will have to bear with it once again in the musical choices of this week's episode!
On Thursday May 11th, 2017 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will review "Lucifer Princeps" (2015) by Peter Grey. This book is quite different in style from its predecessor "The Red Goddess" which, although well-researched, explored the background and origins of Aleister Crowley's "Babalon" in a popular style. Lucifer Princeps however is a scholarly work and might even be an academic dissertation or thesis edited for the lay reader. Being an academic work it suffers from the assumption that the reader is familiar with the material that the writer is working from. Fortunately this corpus is mostly Biblical and Apocryphal but he cross references other mythologies. Nevertheless the book is a wonderful resource and a great contribution to the Western Esoteric Tradition. He starts with Isaiah's lament and curse as the beginning of the Lucifer's Fall from Heaven story. This sets the stage for a parade of sources from ancient Sumerian and Canaanite mythology. We learn about the first ascent to Heaven by the Sumerian king Etana, and then the Canaanite god Athar who tries to sit on Baal's throne. We learn that the Yahwehists hated the pagan gods of the heavens and that the War in Heaven was actually Yahweh against El and the Elohim. Lucifer is finally revealed as our old friend Semyaza (Semhaza), the leader of the 200 Fallen Angels from the original Book of Enoch. The author concludes his work by offering us a mini-grimoire of Semhaza and his 20 officers, leaving us the job of obtaining their sigils -- which we will certainly do. So if you want get a head start on this project, tune in and give a listen.
Today it is a huge pleasure to have someone back on air who already featured an earlier episode in 2019. Chris Guidice is a well-known scholar - but by no means an ‘armchair magician' - having earned an MA in Western Esoteric Tradition at the University of Exeter and a PhD at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Chris has Italian and English ancestry and grew up in Italy until age 18 when he decided to study classics at the University of Oxford developing a special interest in Greek literature. After finishing his studies, however instead of pursuing a purely academic carreer, he embarked on a 10-year-journey working for MTV in Italy as a video editor and a scriptwriter. As a practitioner he spent 20 years with the OTO and the A.:A.: During a visit in London in 2009/2010 Chris stumbled across a small ad for an MA in Western Esoteric Tradition at the University of Exeter where soon no one else than renowned historian and professor Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke became his teacher. Chris' succeeded and followed up with his PhD at the University of Gothenburg where ultimately it was his graduation thesis that would turn into the soon to be published book that is the focus of this week's episode, ‘Occult Imperium: Arturo Reghini, Roman Traditionalism, and the Anti-Modern Reaction in Fascist Italy' (Oxford University Press). In our conversation, we'll explore the life of main protagonist, Arturo Reghini, who was born in Florence in 1878 and was not only a genius mathematician but also a pagan in a Pythagorean tradition. In this context we'll try to shed some light on the practices of the Pythagoreans in South Italy back then and how their ideas ran parallel with certain political aspirations of the time culminating into the prospect of (re)-establishing a ‘Sacred Imperium of Italy' in the tradition of ‘True Roman' Imperial concepts. Of course, the question of the relationship between Italian occultism and Italian Fascism can't be neglected and so we will have a honest and open discussion about the role and rise of Mussolini, how the occult imperialist ideas came into pretty handy serving a purpose for a limited amount of time and how the relationship finally played out especially for Reghini himself. We'll close our episode with a glimpse at Chris' upcoming projects which include publishing rare occult classics of the fin de siècle period such as Florence Farr's plays and a special project right in time for the Magickal Women Conference in October 2022. You know I like classical music. And from what I often hear from you listeners, there are quite a few who like especially classical music from the baroque time, 16th and especially 17th century. Well, this is for you then! Music from Italy, the country our subject is about in the interview today, from the 17th century! Alessandro Scarlatti's (1660-1725) music forms an important link between the early Baroque Italian vocal styles of the 17th century, with their centers in Florence, Venice and Rome, and the classical school of the 18th century. Scarlatti's style, however, is more than a transitional element in Western music; like most of his Naples colleagues he shows an almost modern understanding of the psychology of modulation and also frequently makes use of the ever-changing phrase lengths so typical of the Napoli school. His son, Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757), is classified primarily as a Baroque composer chronologically,
Evangelicals and other Christians often express concern and fear over "the occult," and the analysis can be very superficial. In this podcast noted scholar of new religions, Massimo Introvigne, provides an overview of the Western Esoteric tradition. Introvigne is an Italian sociologist of religions. He is the founder and managing director of the Center for Studies on New Religions (CESNUR), an international network of scholars who study new religious movements. Introvigne is the author of some 70 books and more than 100 articles in the field of sociology of religion. He was the main author of the Enciclopedia delle religioni in Italia (Encyclopedia of Religions in Italy). He is a member of the editorial board for the Interdisciplinary Journal of Research on Religion and of the executive board of University of California Press' Nova Religio. From January 5 to December 31, 2011, he has served as the “Representative on combating racism, xenophobia and discrimination, with a special focus on discrimination against Christians and members of other religions” of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). From 2012 to 2015 he served as chairperson of the Observatory of Religious Liberty, instituted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in order to monitor problems of religious liberty on a worldwide scale. The interview with my guest of this week's episode was actually recorded right away on New Year's Day and I'm very happy to welcome author, leader of a Gnostic Parish and a Martinist Lodge, 32nd Degree Mason and 9° Magus in the S.I.R.A., Rev. Mathieu G. Ravignat. Mathieu has published three large and very deeply researched and well-written books on the Élus Coëns, the French Gnostic Church and Egyptian Masonry and of course these will be our main topics of interest. Growing up in a devout but open-minded Canadian Catholic family Mathieu was called to spirituality at a young age and even considered priesthood as a path in his early teens. However, during his university years he discovered several authors like William Blake who exerted a huge influence on his spiritual views and pointed him into different directions making him re-questioning his orthodox Catholic framework and opening up the gates to Western Esotericism to him. Mathieu went on to contact local esoteric groups and soon became active in Masonic circles, especially embracing Martinism. In 2019 Mathieu published a book ‘The French Gnostic Church: Doctrinal and Liturgical Evolution' which is about one of the least understood esoteric parts of the Western Esoteric Tradition. We'll be talking about his inspiration for putting quite a lot of work into this project as well as how digitization played a big part in it. We'll be exploring how the Gnostic Church could evolve in France, how it embraced mystical experiences in a Valentinian tradition and went on to become the first church in modern history that consecrated a woman as a bishop. Of course we'll be discussing the figure of visionary and neo-Catharist Jules Doinel who as its leader aimed to return to a ‘primitive' form of Christianity with its basis in the Gospel of John. The covers of Mathieu Ravignat's two books that we disuss in this episode.Available here Aside from Roman Catholicism and Protestantism that both got carried forward into French respectively British Esoteric practices there was also a third ‘movement' within esotericism without a religious framework which was a huge inspiration for another of Mathieu's books, ‘Quest for a Lost Rite: The Origins, High Degrees and Spiritual Practices of Traditional Egyptian Freemasonry'. In this book he aims for the reconstruction of very specific degrees and also provides spiritual methods of the rites and we'll be diving deeply into his motivation to make the information within this book available for the public in not only going into details on historical aspects but creating a work that is useful to the soul and offers real tools for practice. In the end, Mathieu will kindly open up on his upcoming projects including a book titled ‘Hermetic Musings Volume I.', containing articles on esoteric subjects such as the concept of the bridal chamber in ancient Gnosticism, practical alchemy and much more. Music played in this episode ONCE AGAIN, TODAY'S MUSIC IS BY ONE OF OUR LISTENERS. BENJAMIN BROWN, SOUND ENGINEER FROM SCOTLAND, CONTACTED ME AND OFFERED US THREE OF HIS WORKS. Benjamin Brown is a recording engineer and musician based between Glasgow and The Black Isle in Scotland. The music that we hear in this episode is from a record he made during 2020 and finished last year. Here is what he says about his work: "It's a pretty little thing which I suppose is something I have always wanted to make.. It is a continuation of what I have always done - express myself via music - and to me, makes perfect sense. When I was nineteen I joined the band Falloch and made a quiet decision to spend the next decade pursuing "music" to see where I could get.
In today's episode I have the great pleasure to talk to UK based author of two books and more to follow soon, teacher, martial artist and specialist on Daoist witchcraft, alchemy and magic, Jason Read. Jason's path started like probably a lot of ours out there with visiting a local bookstore. Getting his hands on Dion Fortunes ‘Psychic Self Defence' was just the first step in embarking on a journey of long and serious studies of Western Esotericism where he became familiar with the Golden Dawn's system as well as with Aleister Crowley's writings and a lot more important cornerstones in Western Esoteric Tradition. However, after some time Jason felt that he had to go back to some of the more original sources of Western Esotericism such as the writings of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa and after embracing a Neoplatonic path he finally found himself to be attracted by references to Chinese magic made in Kenneth Grant's works. Fascinated by the Chinese traditions Jason decided to live and work in Asia for some time and learned Mandarin fluently. Soon he felt the need to look into forbidden occult Chinese practices in depth but something seemed to be missing to him personally so he relocated to Malaysia where he not only met his future wife but also came across his teacher and entered a 12 years long apprenticeship in the Maoshan tradition, a specific branch of Daoist practice. Find those book to buy HERE In this episode of the show we talk about all those common things that Daoism and Western magic share, point out one often enough overlooked key to magical systems in general and discuss the Western idea of Daoism as an invention. Jason sheds some light on the various branches of Daoism and explains the differences between the Northern and the Southern branch in great detail as well as a lot of parallels to Western magical ideas. We'll go into detail about certain shamanistic practices as the base of an original Chinese magical system and Jason will explain the practice of Qi Gong versus Neigong and the aim of the latter which is quite in harmony with a lot of Western alchemical and spiritual practices. We also touch on the importance of the landscape surrounding the magician and the inclusion of ancestors for his workings. Of course, Jason's two books ‘Thunder Magic' and ‘Fox Magic' that have already been published with Mandrake will be an important topic and he will open up on his motivation using a certain terminology in his writings. Both books are highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn more about Chinese magical concepts in a profound yet quick and accessible way and the next book in his series will be ‘Practical Chinese Magic' which should be out soon, also published by Mandrake. In this most recent book Jason aims for covering the fundamentals that a skilled Western magician can take out and apply to his practice. A special Bicycle Day exclusive episode! Today we talked with PD Newman, author of the books Alchemically Stoned: The Psychedelic Secret of Freemasonry and the soon to be released Angels in Vermilion: The Philosophers’ Stone, From Dee to DMT. PD Newman is an expert in the correlation and secret history of use of psychedelics in classical hermeticism, alchemy, and masonry. He believes that there is ample evidence to suggest that the history of the Western Esoteric Tradition is filled with the use of psychedelics, primarily DMT. It was a fascinating conversation and I hope you enjoy listening to it! More on PD Newman can be found here: https://g.co/kgs/ZhpFtP

If you appreciate Parallax Views and the work of J.G. Michael please consider supporting the show through Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/parallaxviews On this edition of Parallax Views, the Nation of Islam has often been analyzed as a political movement with the trappings of a religion. Dr. Stephen C. Finley, however, has been taking a decidedly different approach to understanding the NoI. Namely, he's sought to analyze the Nation of Islam as a religion with ties to New Age thought, UFO beliefs, Freemasonry, and other elements of the Western Esoteric Tradition. Needless to say, this approach departs from both the conventional histories of the Nation of Islam as well as the Western Esoteric Tradition. Dr. Finley joins us on this edition of the program to discuss his fascinating research into the Nation of Islam. Among the topics discussed: - The mysterious Master Fard Muhammad aka Wallace Fard Muhammad - Elijah Muhammad's formative experiences with racism and how it may relate to the theology of the Nation of Islam - Louis Farrakhan, the reconstituted Nation of Islam, and UFO beliefs - Theological narratives as a metaphor for the lived experience of everyday life (in this case of black bodies) - Discussion of esotericism in the black religious experience outside of the Nation of Islam; specifically rootwork, hoodoo, and conjure - And much, much more.

The questions I'm aiming to answer are one, whether there are any phenomena like electromagnetism which might be considered magic if we considered their properties independently of their realness (in other words, whether there are any other forms of type K pseudomagic beyond electromagnetism and whether there are any forms of type N pseudomagic at all); and two, if magical practices might be incorporated into personal religious belief and practice in a non-realist way (whether type P pseudomagic is viable, in other words). But first I'll need to figure out more about what magic is. Angel Millar joins us again to talk more in depth about his wonderful new book: The three Stages of Initiatic Spirituality; Craftsman, Warrior, Magician. Angel Millar is a well-known lecturer on Freemasonry, initiation, and esotericism as well as an artist and student of the martial arts. The author of several books, including Freemasonry: Foundation of the Western Esoteric Tradition, he lives in New York City. We talk about the important role memory plays in initiation and initiatic orders. Angel describes the different phases of human development, or anti-development moving from the Golden age in Eden to the current likely Kali Yuga Iron age of the present. We discuss the world view of primordial man and how aesthetics and symbolism were perceived, and how they are perceived dramatically differently for modern man. We also talk about the higher self, and what that means for the initiate, as well as the great work of preparing oneself for death. And of course Angel walks us through the three archetypes described in the book in great detail. This and more.... On Thursday May 28th, 2014 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will review the 2008 book "The Music of Pythagoras" by musicologist Kitty Ferguson. This is a wonderfully erudite and deeply meaningful book on the accomplishments, and lasting influence of the most important of the pre-Socratean philosophers, and perhaps the most important ancient avatar of the Western Esoteric Tradition. As a musicologist Ferguson is able to fully expound on the master's development of "The Music of the Spheres" from mythical Orpheus through Kepler to Close Encounters of the Third Kind (we can all whistle that one). The Pythagorean harmonious universe of music, mathematics, and geometry has been re-validated in modern times with the advent of new theories in quantum physics. It was, of course, the bed rock of Qabalah, Alchemy and Magick. We will demonstrate some applications of the Pythagorean magical scale used to activate psychic centers (chakras) and discuss the employment of these techniques in magical operations. So tune in, tune up and we'll sing along with the planets.
On Thursday September 12th, 2013 the Hermetic Hour's host Poke Runyon will introduce distinguished guest Dr. Ralph Metzner who will discuss his latest book "Worlds Within and Worlds Beyond," the seventh in his series of books on "The Ecology of Consciousness." All of Dr. Metzner's works are of special interest to students of the Western Esoteric Tradition. Check out his web site at www.greenearthfound.org. He was one of the original psychedelic experimenters and facilitators of that tempestuous era, an Oxford graduate, psychotherapist and a philosopher. His latest book will be of particular interest to students of Magick who may wish to compare his system of therapeutic soul travel to the Buddhist Six Worlds of the Wheel of Existance, the nine realms of the Nordic Yggdrasill World Tree, and the Octaves of Pythagoras with our own Pathworkings on the Qabbalistic Tree of Life. Many of his insights are applicable to our venue regardless of technique. He refers to his method as Alchemical Divination. Although we may use different techniques, and different mythologies we can always learn from the insights and the visions of a master -- so turn us on, tune us in, and don't drop out.
On Thursday February 28th, 2013, the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon, will explain the fundamental and practical changes the Order of the Temple of Astarte (O.T.A.) has made in Qabalah, Yoga, Angel gender, Evocation of Spirits, and both Biblical and Pagan mythology in order to make Hermetic visionary magick a gender-balanced system that men and women can feel is equally theirs, and still be within the compass of the genuine Western Esoteric Tradition. As most of you know The G.D., the O.T.O., Freemasonry and the Rosicrucians are all patriarchal, male-dominated and male-oriented systems in which there is no veneration of a true Divine Feminine and little concern for feminine viewpoint. The O.T.A. was founded in 1969, when modern Neo-Paganism was emerging as a dynamic spiritual force. We were very much influenced by Feraferia, and Robert Graves. We knew that if traditional magick was to be valid in this modern age, the balance of male and female elements had to be created and maintained. This is a controversial subject and we will be open to call-ins on the topic -- so, tune in and find out about traditional magick's affirmative action program.
On Thursday December 6th, 2012 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon, will present a discussion on the Masonic scholar and author Albert Pike, his legacy and his unique contributions to American Masonry and the Western Esoteric Tradition. Pike was and still is a very controversial figure. He was also a paradox: opposed to slavery, he still served as a general in the Confederate army. He was an advocate of Native American rights and led a regiment of Confederate Indians against the Yankees whom they hated. He was the father of Scottish Rite Masonry in America, rewriting and organizing a jumble of continental Masonic degrees into a coherent system that has become the largest Masonic jurisdiction in the world. He was an occultist much influenced by Eliphas Levi, and a proponent of the Hermetic Tradition which he showcased in his favorite Scottish Rite degree Knight of the Sun (the former 28th degree), which he devoted more text to than any other degree in his classic "Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite." Even back in the 19th century he was a lightning rod for anti-masons, being the alleged Luciferian Master of the mysterious lady sex magician "Diana Vaughan" in the great French "Palladian Hoax". So if you want to get the inside story on this giant of American Masonry and his efforts to preserve the ancient mysteries behind Freemasonry, tune in and we'll shed some Light on the subject.
On Thursday September 6th, 2012 the Hermetic Hour, with host Poke Runyon, will present a discussion on the work and the influence of the 19th century French occultist Eliphas Levi (Alphonse Constant), a former Catholic priest who embraced and codefied a Rosicrucian version of Kabbalah and Hermetic philosophy. Eliphas Levi launched the modern occult revival in 1856 with his book now titled "Transcendental Magic." He developed the theory of "Astral Light," and assigned Kabbalistic letter correspondences to the Tarot trumps. He considered the Tarot more ancient than the kabbalah itself. Levi was a seminal influence on Blavatsky, Pike, Westcott, Mathers and Crowley. He was sometimes wrong in his historical assumptions, but this was almost intentional on his part. He was creating a grand, unified scheme out of divergent myth-themes which he synthesized into what we now call The Western Esoteric Tradition. Tune in and we will spend an hour remembering "The French Magus."
The Hermetic Hour for Thursday August 23rd, 2012 will feature a discussion by host Poke Runyon on the 1st century " Alexandria Connection" where the elements that make up the Western Esoteric Tradition (Hermetic Tradition) came together and began the synthesis that was finally codified by Abbott Trithemius and Cornelius Agrippa in the 16th century. We will trace the Pythagorean, Ancient Egyptian, Gnostic, NeoPlatonic, Biblical (kabbalistic), Alchemical, Astrological, and even Christian influences that were shuffled together in a spiritual-intellectual ferment in what was perhaps the greatest university our Western world could boast of until the modern "Age of Enlightenment." We have dealt with this subject before, but this time we will focus on the particular people and their traditions: Alexander (Himself), Ptolemy the astrologer king, Hypatia the Pagan martyr, Hermes Trismegistus, and Marcus and Simon Magus. We will touch on the Greek Qabalah, the Osiris myth, and the influence of Zoroaster. So, if you have a burning desire to visit the Library of Alexandria, join us -- but no smoking inside, please...
On Thursday, August 9th, 2012 The Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a discussion on Satanism and its relation to the Western Esoteric Tradition. We will trace its early historical precedents: Set, Tiamat, Nergal, Ahriman, and how these demonic elements were incorporated into the Biblical tradition as contenders in the service of "God." We'll discuss Gnostic ideas about the Cain and Abel Biblical perversity, the evil Demiurge, and the medieval Luciferians. Moving into the Hermetic Tradition in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, we will explain High Magick's sophisticated idea, based on ancient Egyptian concepts, of controlling and using dark forces with the Power of Light. Then we will trace the descent of magick, following the Reformation, into the "Faustian School" of the Baroque period with its "Demonic Pacts," finally evolving into full-blown Satanism in the decadent Fin d' Sec le era in late 19th century France. We'll mention several books by famous authors taking the Devil's side, and we'll recount our afternoon with Tony Levy (Anton LaVey) and his wife, and I'll even recall my own meeting with The Devil Himself. The bottom-line in all of this is that Old Nick cannot be avoided in any serious practice of Magick based on Biblical traditions -- because he is very much a part of those traditions -- but he should never be worshiped or allowed to run your show. He's an adviser, a consultant, and even a friendly one at times, but always remember: he works for God and he plays God's game. Tune in and we'll tell you how to get to Heaven before the Devil knows you're dead.
On Thursday April 26th, 2012, The Hermetic Hour, host Poke Runyon, will review his 1980 master's thesis in cultural anthropology at Cal State, Northridge, titled: "A History of Magical Cults and the Rise of NeoPaganism in Southern California." This work has never been published and contains what some might consider "sensitive" material. It briefly reviews the history of the Western Esoteric Tradition starting in first century Alexandria, up through the 19th and 20th century magical groups, concentrating on the modern rise of Magick and "Wicca" in England -- and immigrating to America. Magick first in the 1920s, followed by witchcraft in the 1960s. The rise of nature oriented NeoPaganism in Southern California, through the turbulent psychedelic era, and the new "Coven model" organizations. I saw this phenomenon as a cultural revitalization movement I referred to as "NeoRomanticism." It is a sad fact that most contemporary witches and magicians know very little about the actual history of their "traditions," especially in relation to other earlier traditions, and groups they may not be aware they are related to. We will open a time capsule and go back 35-40 years to the thrilling days of yesteryear. Tune in and we'll ripe the veil of mystery from our history.
