New Zealand v Australia, Christchurch Day 4: It was a final day as good as we could have hoped. A decisive strike early but a decisive miss to go with it. A partnership that built. Then a dramatic final sequence. New Zealand and Australia had a stunner, as the clouds rolled in and the afternoon darkened. Alex Carey was involved, Mitchell Marsh, Ben Sears, Glenn Phillips, and inevitably late in a chase, Pat Cummins. New Zealand v Australia, Christchurch Day 2: It could have been a day when New Zealand went over the edge, but instead they managed to keep both feet on the ledge - although the drop is still there. Matt Henry made his summer even hotter to keep Australia within range, then Tom Latham and Kane Williamson resumed NZ's second-most prolific partnership to close the distance. Approaching day three, a couple of results are still in range. New Zealand v Australia, Christchurch Day 1: Win the toss and bowl. It is becoming a Pat Cummins signature, and the move looked pretty good with Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc to back him up. New Zealand v Australia, Wellington Day 3: Both teams kept the foot down during a Test that keeps motoring along, with Nathan Lyon having some fun playing at being a batter before Glenn Phillips had even more playing at being a bowler. New Zealand v Australia, Wellington Day 2: Well, that escalated quickly. The morning went by as Cameron Green and Josh Hazlewood worked their way into historical territory that involved the Big Ship Warwick Amstrong and Final Word fave Arthur Mailey, before a series of calamities befell New Zealand's batting. Glenn Phillips was great fun as ever, Matt Henry kept carrying this team, and Kane Williamson had one of his strangest days. New Zealand v Australia, Wellington Day 1: After eight long years, the Australian men's Test team returned to New Zealand to play. And for a couple of sessions they perhaps wished they had not, as the local bowlers got on top on a green pitch. But another Green thing is Cameron Green, and he had something significant to say about the state of play by the close in a flurried finish. New Zealand v Australia, Wellington Day 0: What will we do without Neil Wagner? A fine career comes to an end ahead of the series opener between the Black Caps and Pat Cummins' men at the beautiful Basin. For the Aussies, it's the XI as anticipated - the same side that lost to the Windies at the Gabba a month ago - and they're on the hunt for precious WTC points away from home. As for Tim Southee's team, they would do anything to get over the line against Australia in a Test Match for the first time in over a dozen years but they won't have Devon Conway's assistance in that mission, out with a thumb injury - a big blow. Bharat Sundaresan is with Adam Collins in their Airbnb/commune/hostel. And then... India v England, Ranchi Wash-up: How did it come to this? Will Bashir and Hartley ever get a game in the County Championship? And what on earth happened to Ollie Robinson? Cameron is joined once again by Cricinfo's Vithushan Ehantharajah to analyse to England's series defeat and have the latest from the camp. The first of two tests gets underway on Thursday at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. Part one of Meagan's story of abuse, takes her from Canada to New Zealand to Australia. Along the way, she meets a man she thinks is just the one she needed at just the right time. Her narrative soon becomes an inexplicable story of serial mistreatment. Like many accounts of abuse told on this podcast, Meagan's story left me speechless many times. How such an agreeable, young, smart woman could become captured by one man's vicious web of abuse remains beyond anyone's comprehension. Hear this narrative and hope you never meet up with someone like Max: a man so devious, so thoroughly awful. Max found ways to keep an inescapable grip on Meagan time and time again. Often, we ask ourselves why (how) anyone would go back to their abuser. But there is more to these tangled relationships than we know. There is a pull there most of us have never felt. This episode helps us gain understanding. Max appeared to be just what Meagan needed to make her feel complete. But he came to represent a serial abuser who made her life a complete nightmare. Things start out slowly. But hang on. This is going to become unbearable. Part two of Meagan's story of abuse picks up immediately after she escaped certain death had she fallen from her fourteenth-floor apartment balcony. Her fall would have been precipitated by her boyfriend, Max. She is not sure what o do about this abuser/boyfriend. Is he an unfortunate victim of himself, or a serial abuser bent on making her life a living Hell?Meagan is presented with a few chances to leave Max. But she wonders if a few facets of their relationship can be turned around, maybe it can become what she thought in the early days. In this WHEN DATING HURTS episode, there are times when Meagan chooses to remain with Max over finding her own freedom. It's a vicious cycle many victims find themselves stuck in. She isn't sure whether to go to the police, call a domestic violence agency, or return home to endure further emotional and physical abuse from this man. One morning, when Max was determining whether to kill her or let her live, it was time for her to decide her own fate. This episode points out examples of abuse like "love bombing', "gaslighting", and more classic techniques worked to perfection by today's abusers. Be sure to listen to the end. Sometimes, it takes a risk to make a difference. Just ask Brendan McEnroe , the successful CTO of Trade Window , the first blockchain company on the New Zealand Stock Exchange. He is also the founder of consultancy service DigitalTui and co-founder of software firm Block Zero. Brendan, a technologist at heart, clearly has his fingers in many pies, which he explains to us in detail in the latest episode of the Agile CTO podcast. He also shares his insights on: The value of the Agile philosophy in business The importance of a growth mindset How the Spotify model has helped his team achieve success His commitment to engineering excellence He also chats a bit about his personal life – his big move to New Zealand (Australia has too many spiders!), what keeps him up at night, and his passion for electronic music. We also raise the question: could music and software development be intrinsically linked? Brendan weighs in on this fascinating concept and so much more. With over 30 years of industry experience, Brendan shares some of the things he has learned along the way, including how to embrace inevitable change or risk being left behind. In this edition of "Asia Insight" we take a look at the complex and important relationships between NZ, Australia and China. Tensions have escalated in the last 18 months between China and Australia, while NZ has remained a cautious observer, willing to speak its mind, but wary of any potential souring in the trade relationship. In a post-covid recovery, the three nations will need each other more than ever. We're joined in the studio this week by Dr Bec Strating from La Trobe University in Melbourne, and Dr Jason Young, Director of the Contemporary China Research Centre at Victoria University in Wellington. Kia ora,Welcome to Monday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the International edition from Interest.co.nz.Today we lead with news – forget about house prices, we are all about to be obsessed with angst about inflation.First we should note that over the course of this coming week the central bank news will be relentless. Final 2021 review meetings are being held at the US Fed, The Bank of Japan, the ECB, and in Switzerland, England, Norway and Mexico. All are facing inflation issues, and all need to set new defenses against that, a threat many in their countries have forgotten how corrosive it can me. But all also face huge public debt for which 'financial repression' is the standard playbook solution. Their judgements will be watched with interest.Clearly, both supply and demand issues are occurring at the same time, and that means these policy makers face a unique set of policy circumstances their forebears didn't. If earlier times it was one or the bother; now its both. One thing seems certain; faster tapering by the US Fed.American consumer price inflation came in at the expected 6.8% year-on-year in November, and up from 6.2% in October. Their core inflation level also didn't surprise with a 4.9% rate compared to 4.6% in October. The main driver was energy costs, and the impact of these may fall away soon as crude oil's gains seem to have settled down. But other elements are rising faster too with food prices up a concerning 6.1%, clothing and apparel up 5.0%, rent up 3.8% and new car costs up 11%. Oddly, medical care costs have only changed minorly over the past year. And we should note that the widespread tornado damage through the US Midwest will, temporarily at least, disrupt domestic supply chains, causing enhanced supply-side inflation over the next few months.Americans haven't experienced inflation like this two generations (since 1982) so there is bound to be unease, and probably much of it partisan. Overlooked will be that average weekly earnings rose +5.6% in the year to November, more than the core CPI rise and less than the headline rate. 'Real earnings' will have declined, but there is more than enough room for consumers to make small adjustments to ride out these changes. And of course, most will. But inflation 'shock' will be real, especially more those who didn't see this coming and others at the margins. However, so far there is no real evidence there is widespread angst, with the widely-watched University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey coming in more optimistic that analysts had expected and broadly stable over the past four months. So far, Americans seem to be handling higher inflation in a mature way.Meanwhile, the US budget deficit is now shrinking, even if the progress is small. It came in under -US$2.7 tln in the year to November, or -12.5% of GDP. Rising tax revenues from higher activity is helping. For the first two months of their new fiscal year (October and November) federal tax receipts were +23% higher than the same period in 2020. If that keeps up (and it may be unlikely), they will eat into their deficits quickly. US federal tax levels are very low by international standards; in 2020 they were 16.5% of US GDP, 25.5% for all taxes (not just Federal) whereas the average for OECD countries was 33.5%. In New Zealand it was 32.2% and Australia 27.7%.In China, the top brass in Beijing are increasingly concerned about stability as their economic activity slows down. In a statement after their closed-door three-day Central Economic Work Conference they declared: “Ensuring stability is the top priority for the economy next year.”China's housing market is cooling fast. Unsold new home inventories have climbed to the highest level since August 2016. In some regions a sense of panic is growing as their home owners face steep losses. You can see why 'stability' is now the catchword. And there are increasing concerns, even internally, that China's economic data is being manipulated again - to be relentlessly positive. In Japan, producer prices rose more than expected in November, adding to background global costs. At an annual rise of 9.0%, and a monthly rise of +1.4%, that puts them at a 40 year high, and a very uncomfortable position for their manufacturers.Germany also reported very high consumer price inflation for November, up 5.2% and it highest since 1992 (and up +6.0% on a harmonised basis to compare with how other countries report it). Energy costs are the main culprit there, but food prices rose 4.5%.Brazil also reported CPI inflation over the weekend - and theirs was at 10.7%. (All these high CPI rates puts New Zealand's 4.9% into perspective and makes Australia's 3.0% seem very modest. Inflation will surely persist as long as the supply-chain pressures persist, irrespective of the oil price.)We should also note that coffee prices are now at a ten year high and have risen very sharply since April.India's industrial production disappointed for October, up +3.1% and much less than was anticipated. The RBI's maintenance of loose monetary policies to try and get some momentum building in the Indian economy makes sense with this data.Locally, supply-chain pressures, especially in the house building industry, are causing extreme cost inflation. It isn't an issue only affecting New Zealand - Australia has equally severe pressure. The houses we thought we were getting via the very high consent approvals, either may not actually arrive, or if they do, they will be substantially more expense that budgeted. The UST 10yr yield opens today at 1.48% and down -1 bp from this time Saturday. The price of gold will start today at US$1783/oz and down -US$3 from this time on Saturday. And oil prices start the week a little firmer at just under US$72/bbl in the US, while the international Brent price is still just over US$75/bbl.The Kiwi dollar opens today marginally softer at 67.9 USc. Against the Australian dollar however we are marginally firmer at 94.8 AUc. Against the euro we are unchanged at 60.1 euro cents. That means our TWI-5 starts the week at 72.6.The bitcoin price is virtually unchanged at US$47,845 and up a mere +0.7% from this time Saturday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has stayed modest at just over +/- 1.6%.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. And get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston and we'll do this again tomorrow.

I saw a good post online from a brother in Christ who is in New Zealand/Australia. I thought what he said was eloquent and to the point. I hope in my ramblings I say something in this episode that will cause you to think about what is going on around you and will cause you to treat your brothers and sisters in Christ better regardless of what side of the issue you are. Here is the post: STOP SEGREGATION I urge the people of New Zealand, Australia and the world to say no! Let us not be driven apart by a divisive narrative setting those who are jabbed against those who are not. This threatens families, loved ones, friends, communities and individuals. Without judgment on who chooses or chose not to have the “jab”. Whatever your choice, realise that the narrative is not all it seems to be. If the jab worked it would mean that the jabbed ones would be protected, even though the opposite is proving true. How despicable it is to start to attack and degrade honest and loyal citizens based upon a trial “jab” status. Together we can stand but divided we will all fall to tyranny and oppression. The survival rates for this virus are extremely high generally and preventative measures are proving effectual. Regardless of what those who seek to control decide, let us say no to segregation and fear mongering. Let us pray and choose against segregation. The world is quickly heading down a dark road but we can change that by being united. Police, lawyers, judges, citizens, families, doctors, nurses, all… let us say no to turning on each other. Unite in prayer and in refusing to segregate and incapacitate our fellow man. Think about your choices and how they will impact the future for all people. Let us pray amd fast about such a huge threat facing the world. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern rejected a suggestion that New Zealand's statements on Five Eyes and China had created a strain with the United States."None of my interactions have suggested there is any such strain. I would reject that."And she said New Zealand was not choosing China over the United States."We have never been in the position of choosing sides. We have always been on the side of New Zealand's interests and New Zealand values."Ardern also said the Labour caucus expected to discuss next Tuesday the Act Party's motion it plans to bring to Parliament on labelling China's treatment of Uighurs in Xinjiang "genocide."She made her comments to New Zealand reporters after a video conference session with the US Chamber of Commerce, hosted by executive vice-president Myron Brilliant, during which the issue of Five Eyes was raised by an Australian reporter for Axios. The Five Eyes issue was raised last week when Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta said New Zealand was uncomfortable using the intelligence and security network (Australia, Canada, NZ, US and UK) as the first point of reference for New Zealand's messaging around human rights and China. It raised an outcry from commentators and politicians particularly based in Britain, including former Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer and leading Brexiteer Nigel Farage.Ardern said in her session with the US Chamber of Commerce that New Zealand did not rule out signing up to future Five Eyes statements but it was more interested in getting broader support."Our view is that we should continue to encourage a range of different platforms for countries for issues be it Myanmar, be it China to continue to raise those concerns."In some cases that might be through the UN. In others it may be as individual countries."New Zealand Australia have jointly joined together in recent times. In others, it may well be coalitions under the platform of say Five Eyes."But what was most important was the principle was to share New Zealand's views openly when it saw issues counter to its interests and values."They are of course support for international rules and norms and the importance to us of human rights and democracy. And that takes precedence over everything."She said New Zealand was proud of its independent foreign policy."We have never chosen partners perse. We have always chosen to stand on our values which are strongly embedded in the importance of democracy and human rights."She also reiterated that she had raised the issue of the treatment of Uighurs in Xinjiang directly with the leadership in China in Beijing.Speaking to reporters afterwards she was asked about Act's intention to move a motion when Parliament resumes next week asking Parliament to debate a motion declaring China's oppression of Uighurs in Xinjiang an act of "genocide."Ardern said the act of declaring genocide was governed by a set of international criteria and definitions and New Zealand had done it only three occasions: the Holocaust in the Second World War; the massacre of Tutsi in Rwanda and the killing fields conducted by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia."Because there is process there that is defined by international definition, the New Zealand Government has not taken that step at this stage," said Ardern. "What has been put before us as Parliament, however, is a different question."The New Zealand Labour Party is yet to consider its position but I expect we will do that as part of our caucus meeting the next time we meet."That is a similar process that has taken place in other Westminster parliamentary systems. In Britain and Canada, the respective Parliaments have voted without dissent to declare China's treatment of the Uighur as genocide, but the Governments have not taken a position.Ardern took part in the US Chamber of Commerce from the Auckland CBD via video conference. It was billed as a conversation on her priorities for its year hosting Apec, climate and sustainability, Covid...

This week, we’re taking on the biggest news story in the country. The gates have been opened across the ditch, and the New Zealand-Australia travel bubble, an idea first floated in April of last year, is finally upon us.Joining me today to help 'burst the bubble' is Senior Lecturer in the Management Discipline Group at the UTS Business School, co-chair of the CAUTHE (Council of Australasian Tourism and Hospitality Educators), and member of DFAT’s Consular Consultative, Dr. David Beirman.
In this episode, I interview Carmen Vicelich, the award-winning founder and Global CEO of Valocity Global, a company that harnesses technology and data to transform and create new and connected digital ecosystems, streamlining the mortgage lending and valuation processes around the world and automating workflow from end to end. Carmen is an entrepreneurial powerhouse passionate about leveraging data and technology to generate impact and transformation. In record time, she has created two multi-million-dollar, industry-leading businesses that do just that. Purchasing a property is often a significant investment, however, before any bank can lend money for a mortgage, they must first assess its value. Carmen’s company Valocity has revolutionized this process, by digitally connecting lenders, valuers, brokers, and customers in one smart platform to streamline the valuation and approval process. This makes property-buying faster and more transparent for all parties, delivering huge efficiencies to the estimated $2 Trillion-dollar New Zealand property market. The unique, cloud-based platform is used by some of the world’s largest lenders across New Zealand, Australia, India, and Asia. A true Kiwi success story, Valocity has been recognized globally including the prestigious India FinTech Awards 2019 as Fintech Start Up of the Year, and Singapore Top 10 Global Fintech 2018. In parallel to Valocity, Carmen developed a second company, Data Insight, which helps New Zealand’s largest business and government organizations leverage the power of data and advanced analytics, enabling data-driven decision-making to improve customer experience, efficiency, and profitability. Outside of founding two data and technology businesses, Carmen mentors several students and business founders, is a regular speaker sharing her innovation success story, serves on several boards including UNICEF, and is a proud mother of four children. Stay tuned to gain valuable insights as Carmen shares her amazing small business ownership journey This Cast Covers: Helping businesses that have data to make data-driven decisions through analytics and helping them leverage the power of that data. How Valocity eases the process of mortgage lending in New Zealand, Australia, India, and Singapore. Starting a business as a mother of four, aiming at transforming mortgage valuations around the world, and the value of getting support from her husband. Having a monopoly by introducing groundbreaking and new technology that was cloud-based, configurable, and customizable. Growing organically and the great partnership they forged with their current investor two years ago. Starting off with a small founding team and growing it to just under 100 full-time employees within 6 years. Winning awards and being driven by collaboration and innovation. Working with your customers to understand their problem so you can solve it better. Being really good at what they do in their first 4 years by growing organically without any external funding. How being agile has helped them navigate even the most challenging of times including the Covid-19 pandemic. Building a great culture and continuously appreciating her employees. The importance of focusing on one product or service that meets customers’ needs. Ensuring every team member is aligned with the goals of the business. Work-Life balance from Carmen’s point of view: Understanding your values and figuring out what you’re prepared to compromise on. Why small business owners should look after their physical and mental health. The valuable support she receives from her advisory board and why she would advise every small business to have a visionary board and a playbook. Dr. Dimitri Varsamis is Senior Policy Lead for digital primary care at NHS England. End of 2020 he published a report titled Incentives and levers for digitizing and integrating primary care in New Zealand, Australia, and the USA - lessons for the UK’s NHS. Dr. Varsamis researched primary care digitalisation prior to the global coronavirus pandemic. In Australia, people are not required to register with a GP or a practice. Consequently, they see multiple GP which impacts the continuity/integrity of their medical record. Compared to the USA, the public healthcare systems of Australia, New Zealand and the UK lack the expertise in change management and purchasing support. These are just two findings by Senior Policy Lead for digital primary care at NHS England Dr. Dimitri Varsamis about primary care digitalisation in the mentioned countries. A New Zealand-Australia travel bubble is a step closer after New Zealand's Cabinet agreed in principle to establish a bubble with Australia early next year. Australia already accepts New Zealand travellers without forcing hotel quarantine. And despite hotel quarantine outbreaks in South Australia and NSW, Australia has kept community transmission cases very low. So what could be the hold up in creating a New Zealand Australian travel bubble? Well on today's Coronacast, we can look to sexually transmitted infections for a possible answer. Also on today's show: * mRNA vaccines fiddle with genetics, does that mean it could cause cancer? * Social distancing has suppressed many viruses, but my son in kindergarten has just had his 10th cold. Are we doing something wrong?

Pacific nations have largely avoided the worst health effects of COVID-19, but its economic impact has been devastating. With the tourism tap turned off, unemployment has soared while GDP has plummeted. In recent weeks, Fiji Airways laid off 775 employees and souvenir business Jack’s of Fiji laid off 500. In Vanuatu 70% of tourism workers have lost their jobs. Cook Islands is estimated to have experienced a 60% drop in GDP in the past three months. In response, many are calling for the Pacific to be included in the proposed trans-Tasman travel corridor. Such calls have come from tourism operators, politicians and at least one health expert.Quarantine concerns aside, there is economic logic to this. Australians and New Zealanders make up more than 50% of travellers to the region. Some countries are massively dependent: two-thirds of visitors to Fiji and three-quarters of visitors to Cook Islands are Aussies and Kiwis.Cook Islands has budgeted NZ$140 million for economic recovery, but this will increase the tiny nation’s debt. Prime Minister Henry Puna has argued for a limited tourism bubble as soon as New Zealand relaxes its COVID-19 restrictions to alert level 1. Cook Islands News editor Jonathan Milne estimates 75-80% of the population is “desperate to get the tourists back”.A Pacific bubble would undoubtedly help economic recovery. But this merely highlights how vulnerable these island economies have become. Tourism accounts for between 10% and 70% of GDP and up to one in four jobs across the South Pacific. The pressure to reopen borders is understandable. But we argue that a tourism bubble cannot be looked at in isolation. It should be part of a broader strategy to diversify economies and enhance linkages (e.g. between agriculture and tourism, to put more local food on restaurant menus), especially in those countries that are most perilously dependent on tourism.Over-dependence on tourism is a trapPacific nations such as Vanuatu and Fiji have recovered quickly from past crises such as the GFC, cyclones and coups because of the continuity of tourism. COVID-19 has turned that upside down.People are coping in the short term by reviving subsistence farming, fishing and bartering for goods and services. Many are still suffering, however, due to limited state welfare systems. In Fiji’s case, the government has taken the drastic step of allowing laid-off or temporarily unemployed workers to withdraw from their superannuation savings in the National Provident Fund. Retirement funds have also been used to lend FJ$53.6 million to the struggling national carrier, Fiji Airways.Fiji has taken on more debt to cope. Its debt-to-GDP ratio, which ideally should sit below 40% for developing economies, has risen from 48.9% before the pandemic to 60.9%. It’s likely to increase further.High debt, lack of economic diversity and dependence on tourism put the Fijian economy in a very vulnerable position. Recovery will take a long time, probably requiring assistance from the country’s main trading partners. In the meantime, Fiji is pinning hopes on joining a New Zealand-Australia travel bubble.Out of crisis comes opportunitySupporting Pacific states to recover is an opportunity for New Zealand and Australia to put their respective Pacific Reset and Step-Up policies into practice. If building more reciprocal, equitable relationships with Pacific states is the goal, now is the time to ensure economic recovery also strengthens their socio-economic, environmental and political infrastructures.Economic well-being within the Pacific region is already closely linked to New Zealand and Australia through seasonal workers in horticulture and viticulture, remittance payments, trade and travel. But for many years there has been a major trade imbalance in favour of New Zealand and Australia. What happens when you find yourself craving a new lifestyle? You design a life of adventure abroad and discover more of who you really are. Our podcast guest this week is Kelsey Powell, a risk-taker, writer of wrongs in the world, creative soul, animal lover, and founder of cravingapeace.com / @cravingapeace. She expresses herself creatively through her vegan blog, inspires you to travel and explore — even if you’re going at it alone — and dishes out which food, travel destinations, and big life cravings are on her bucket lists. Kelsey is an incredible example of someone who knows that chasing your creative cravings can truly be a compass guiding the direction of your life, no matter how challenging or scary it may be. Make your way over to Instagram @creative.cravings to participate in this week’s creative challenge, inspired by Kelsey and her 3 ingredients for living life to the fullest. How did Kelsey change the path of her life by starting a vegan blog, feeling lost in the US, and finding herself in New Zealand? Kelsey is such a role model for chasing your creative cravings, especially when your creativity allows you to stand up for what you believe in most. Food for Thought mentioned in this podcast episode: Is traveling one of your priorities for living life to the fullest? What’s next on your travel bucket list? What are your best memories while traveling somewhere special? Co-hosts Sari and Lauren share what’s next on their travel bucket lists, which is also on creativecravingspodcast.com under “Our Story” Kelsey inspires all of us to think about how putting yourself outside of your comfort zone through traveling, actually sparks your creativity Where you start isn’t where you’ll end up, and you’re the one who gets to decide where you’re going Who is Kelsey, and what led her to chase her cravings for blogging and writing, travel, veganism, and “writing” a wrong in the world Big differences in culture between living in the United States vs. New Zealand & Australia Kelsey’s journey from New York to living on the opposite side of the world What to do when you feel like the place you grew up isn’t the right place for you or where you belong How studying, working, or volunteering abroad flips your world upside down and changes everything you thought you knew about the world What’s her favorite place in the world? Her journey from working in mental health to working for AJ Hackett bungee company — something she never thought she would do! What it looks and feels like to live a life that you design for yourself Where does her wanderlust come from? Where does yours come from? Why the question on her mind is always “where can I go next?” Can you relate? How tough times back home led to chasing a craving for travel and a fresh start Lauren asks about different ways to be a risk-taker, from adventure to business to cooking Why people are innately scared to put themselves out there because change is scary and weird, but it’s rewarding if you do it — whatever it is — anyways How wearing your heart on your sleeve is a strength, not a weakness How traveling inspires you to live your life more intentionally and compassionately How to turn your emotions into positive activism Ways to channel emotions, through art, music, songwriting, activism and standing up for what you care about How to make a big leap with the security of someone else, and then go your own way when you feel a calling to do so How to dream bigger than you ever have before, and make it happen Why she felt more confident being alone than lonely being alone while traveling How to turn the experiences of your life into art, through whatever form of self-expression best fits you How do you find a sense of community or belonging when you’re traveling by yourself? How brushing her teeth at a campsite with other girls she had never met before lead to a four day hiking trip with new best friends Transitioning to something new is not easy, from living new places to creating something from scratch like a blog What was she craving when she started her blog? What was the first step? What to do when you’re craving a platform to share a space to be creative, make it meaningful, and help a community of people Advice for anyone who’s creating: keep going, whether you’re at the very beginning or a year into your creative endeavor Stay tuned for what recipe us co-hosts want to make, from Kelsey’s vegan blog, Craving A Peace (Buffalo Cauliflower) Deep dive into Kelsey’s writing process for her Craving A Peace blog and Instagram: What’s the end goal of the post? What am I encouraging people to think about or what problem am I trying to solve? Think about the person you were previously — what would you have wanted to hear? Ask yourself “how can I create that?” Once you have the idea, write it all out, then go back and edit You use two parts of your brain — so first create, then edit/modify, don’t edit as you write or create Pose a question to help people come to the solution on their own How to communicate your message without being too preachy “no one likes a preachy vegan” Sari and Lauren shed light on our imperfect podcasting journey as Kelsey shares the evolution of her blogging The impact that losing someone close to you can have on you and changes your perspective on how you live you life to the fullest — be selfish in a good way How do you become a doer, even as a big dreamer? If you just do, create, write, read one thing every day, no matter how small — chip away at a small part of a bigger goal What is her life compass ? Has travel been the answer to finding her way? Has her body image struggle been the driving force for change? Exchanging funny traveling stories: Kelsey — traveling through Tasmania that ended up featured on Buzzfeed with this photo, Sari — getting hit in the head with a surfboard What does Kelsey’s New Zealand accent sound like? “Keep trying new things, screwing up, failing, learning, look for signs and how you’re feeling about it all” Kelsey’s Ingredients for Living Life to the Fullest: 1. Be bold & brave — add zest to your life, go on adventures, “go out and set the world on fire” (cue music “she sets the city on fire” by Gavin DeGraw). 2. Be passionate & compassionate — kind towards yourself and kind towards others (humans and animals) 3. Share your raw authenticity — don’t hide who you are Food mentioned in this podcast episode: Matcha Milkshakes from Shuhari Matcha Cafe on Abbot Kinney in Venice Beach Smashed avocado with garlic salt, chili flakes, on toast Feijoa, sweet-sour fruit native to New Zealand Green kiwis and golden kiwis Hot Sauce Passionfruit Cashews Lord of the Fries in Queenstown, NZ Places mentioned in this episode for you to add to your travel bucket list: Thailand, Ghana (Western Africa), Central America (volunteering), Australia, New Zealand Melbourne, Queensland, Airlie Beach Great Barrier Reef, French Polynesia, Tahiti, Mo'orea (swimming with sharks and whales and sting rays) Samoa, Tuvalu, Vanuatu South Pacific Islands Add Australia’s “The Big Things” to your bucket list Creative Cravings Challenge, inspired by Kelsey: What are 3 foods that represent your ingredients for living life to the fullest? Or, which 3 food emojis, and why? This week on the Whole Horse Podcast, I connected with the incredible Lucie Klaassen in the Netherlands, fresh on the heels of her first New Zealand/Australia clinic tour. I never know quite what to call Lucie, as her combination of tools and way of working with horses is truly unique and defies labels. In her own words: "I do not follow one method or trainer, I love to learn from different teachers and I try to stay open to everything and then find my own way. Now I have a huge 'toolbox' that I can use. I think there is not ONE method that fits every horse and rider. Every horse is unique so I do a lot by intuition and feel. The horse will tell me what he needs..." Here are a few of the treasures in her tool box: Straightness Training Instructor, Centered Riding instructor, EAD coach (Equine Assisted Development), Masterson Method Certified Practitioner, Holistic massage therapist (for human). Lucie offers international Body Awareness workshops and Balanced Rider & Horse clinics and has had the pleasure of teaching in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the UK and is very open to traveling to new places in the world to share this work! Camping in New Zealand. Living in Australia. Moving to Bali and Italy and other exotic locations. This wasn't part of the plan...at least at first. Phil and Amanda North did have a family adventure planned for after retirement. In fact, they had spent years planning and preparing for that family adventure, and when the time was right, they were ready to begin. ...only it wasn't the family adventure they had planned for. CAMPING IN NEW ZEALAND: ADVENTURE RE-IMAGINED Their North's dream was to sail the oceans together. They had already bought a boat, planned their itinerary and rented out their house when the call came. The boat they bought had unforeseen damage — it would cost too much to repair. Their family adventure plans were shattered, so they did what anyone would do: they started on a new adventure. Three years later they're still traveling the world. Listen in as we talk about house sitting, homeschooling, making friends on the road and many other aspects of their exceptional family adventure. In 2011, my next guest surprised even herself by quitting an enviable office job, hugging friends goodbye, and leaving New York City after six years. She went home to California to regroup, wondered what she was doing with her life, and then got herself a work visa and an outlandishly expensive plane ticket for New Zealand. She spent 12 months living and working on New Zealand's south island, traveling Southeast Asia, and becoming the most hesitant extreme-adventure connoisseur in the world. I guess you could say she did it all on a whim. Jess, from jessonawhim.com, welcome to The Pursuit Zone.

After several long flights, the RV Navigator arrived home from 83 days in New Zealand & Australia in early April. This month we are glad to share a new RV song and an interesting interview with another Australian RVing couple, Andrew and Catherine. This interview was conducted in our hotel room on one of the final days in Sydney. They we kind enough to drive several hours to spend some time with us. The efforts of our listeners to spend some time with us is truly gratifying and we appreciate the efforts. As usual we also have been doing some upgrades to our RVing experiences at home in preparation for our upcoming trip to some of our biggest national parks later in May. We upgraded our cell phone data service with a new data card, purchased new folding bikes, and bought new batteries for the motorhome. These and several other new topics are the focus of our discussion in this episode. So what about daisywheeling - our guests purchased their motorhome (a class C by US standards) because they did NOT want to do daisywheel camping. We on the other hand nearly always to daisywheel camping. Where do you stand? Take a listen for more details.
