The reason you hire a lawyer when you have trouble with the law is two-fold: the lawyer isn't personally facing danger; and they have a procedural grasp of how to guide the process to your favorable outcome. That detached and cool-headed grasp of the process is critical. Emotional people make mistakes. In our ongoing advocacy of skepticism, we turn to some advice attributed to the Dalia Lama. _______________________________________________________________ Check out BETWEEN THE LINES on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPNOEOPOuzo PREPARE or REPAIR: http://PrepareLikeKyle.com (MyPatriotSupply Food Prep) Use PROMO CODE "KYLE" at these sites: http://PatriotCoolers.com/ (Tumblers & Coolers) http://MyPillow.com/Kyle (Pillows/Towels/Bedding) https://matthatjerky.com/kyle (premium Beef Jerky) http://The-Suspendables.com (Show Merch)

But soccer mom Lara Love Hardin has been hiding a shady secret: she is funding her heroin addiction by stealing her neighbors' credit cards. Until it all comes crumbling down. Lara is convicted of thirty-two felonies and becomes inmate S32179. She learns that jail is a class system with a power structure that is somewhere between an adolescent sleepover party and Lord of the Flies. Furniture is made from tampon boxes, and Snickers bars are currency. But Lara quickly discovers that jailhouse politics aren't that different from the PTA meetings she used to attend, and she climbs the social ladder to become the "shot caller" and earns the nickname “Mama Love.” When she's released, harnessing lessons learned from women she was incarcerated with, she reinvents herself as a ghostwriter and successful agent. Now legally co-opting other people's identities through her writing, she goes on to meet Oprah, meditate with The Dalia Lama, and have dinner with Archbishop Desmond Tutu. But the shadow of her past follows her. Shame is a poison worse than heroin—there is no way to detox. Lara must learn how to forgive herself and others, navigate life as a felon on probation, and prove that she is more good than bad. The Many Lives of Mama Love is a heartbreaking, tender, and ultimately inspiring journey from shame to redemption, despite a system that makes it almost impossible for us to move beyond the worst thing we have ever done.   Praise for The Many Lives of Mama Love   “A suburban mom weathers addiction, jail, and parole in this roller-coaster debut memoir…Hardin mixes despair and comedy in her evocative prose: “I carefully pick through the bottom-of-purse debris until I find some small brown chips.... I don't know if I'm smoking heroin or food crumbs or lint, but I feel the anxiety slowly leave my chest.” This redemption story feels well earned.”—Publishers Weekly   “In addition to revealing the struggles of female felons in a misogynist justice system, the author celebrates her own determination to accept herself and begin again. A courageous and inspiring memoir.”—Kirkus   “A hilarious and heartbreaking confession that will not let you go until it is done—and then it will haunt you. It will give you hope in what is possible for each of us if we allow others—and ourselves—to move beyond our shame, find redemption, and write a new, more inspiring story of our lives.”—Lori Gottlieb, author of the New York Times bestseller, Maybe You Should Talk to Someone   “Lara Love Hardin writes with the same humor and bravery that helped her navigate incarceration, sobriety and a daunting return to the community to regain her place in her children's lives. This beautifully told story flies in the face of assumptions about substance use disorder and incarcerated women and shows how community and connection help people rebuild themselves for the better.”—Piper Kerman, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, Orange is the New Black   “A compelling and timely rebuttal to the perverse and unjust notion that people who are convicted of crimes can only be criminals. This critically important idea is essential for a nation that has been so derailed by destructive “law and order” narratives that have left us both less just and less safe.”—Bryan Stevenson, author of the New York Times bestseller Just Mercy   “The Many Lives of Mama Love is a masterclass in perseverance. This brilliant memoir is a reminder and inspiration that sometimes the only way out of suffering is to go straight through it. This book will leave you inspired and empowered to reveal your own most authentic self.”—Rich Roll, bestselling author of Finding Ultra and host of The Rich Roll Podcast   “Laced with penetrating wit, written with unsparing honesty and manifesting irrepressible resilience, The Many Lives of Mama Love is a book to intrigue, enchant, instruct, entertain and inspire readers of all ages and backgrounds. It speaks to our common human experience of suffering and the healing that can follow.” —Gabor Maté M.D., author of the New York Times bestseller, The Myth of Normal   “Start this thrilling, heartrending, funny book, and you won't stop. I couldn't. From page one, I was swept into Hardin's remarkable, un-put-down-able, artfully told story of suffering and redemption. This book can help anyone who's struggled and felt hopelessness (and who hasn't?). shows that not only can we survive the bleakest times, but we can thrive in them and because of them.”—David Sheff, author of #1 New York Times bestseller, Beautiful Boy   “Hardin reveals who we truly are deep inside: infinite souls of limitless possibility. We are far more than the sum of what we have done and not done, what we have and do not have. In her profound, moving memoir, Hardin is honest, courageous, and challenges us to exceed the limiting definition we impose on ourselves and one another. We all can be redeemed.”—Dr. Lisa Miller, psychologist and author of the New York Times bestseller, The Spiritual Child “This book will make you laugh, cry, and realize that everyone deserves a chance and, sometimes more than one. A powerful, poignant memoir filled with grace, enlightenment and love.”—Dr. James Doty, author of the New York Times bestseller, Into The Magic Shop AUTHOR BIO: LARA LOVE HARDIN is a literary agent, author, prison reform advocate, and president of True Literary. Prior to founding True Literary, she was the co-Ceo of Idea Architects. She has an MFA in creative writing and is a four-time New York Times bestselling collaborative writer, including the #1 New York Times bestseller Designing Your Life, and 2018 Oprah Book Club pick, The Sun Does Shine, which she coauthored with Anthony Ray Hinton about his 30 years as an innocent man on Alabama's death row. In 2019, she won a Christopher Award for her work “affirming the highest values of the human spirit,” nominated for an NAACP Image Award, and short-listed for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. Love Hardin lives in La Selva Beach, California, with her husband, Sam. Weed Words: In my humble opinion

Your Intended Message

Play Episode Listen Later May 2, 2023 2:27

In my humble opinion When you hear this phrase what do you think? How do you feel about the speaker? Are you eager to hear a humble opinion?   Do you feel that they are truly humble? Do you believe that their opinion is valid? Do you prepare yourself for a less than humble opinion? Do you think, Who asked for your opinion?   The words humble and opinion do not belong in the same sentence. Put them together and warning bells ring in our heads.   When I hear this phrase, the question that pops up is “Are you expressing your opinion or are you pretending to be humble?” If you are truly humble, why are you expressing your opinion? A humble person doesn't express an opinion. They keep their mouth shut. I imagine that your humbleness doesn't compare to the Dalia Lama. He doesn't claim to be humble. He simply is. If you are humble, you don't need to say it. We will recognize your humbleness by the way you speak and treat others. So your claim to being humble is … what's the word I'm searching for… weak, false, phony – a lie.   If you are humble why express your opinion? If your opinion has value, why is it humble? If your opinion is valid and is more than an opinion – why degrade it?   What I find curious and revealing is that this phrase doesn't suggest that you are humble, instead it's only this particular opinion that is humble. Other opinions might not be humble.   If your opinion is humble – don't express it. If you believe you must pretend to be humble because you don't have faith in your opinion, shut up.   If you want your opinion to be taken seriously, don't pretend to be humble and don't call it an opinion. Instead say, “Based on my experience… Based on my research, Based on my perspective   If you offer value, there's no reason to fake humble. If your message is valuable, don't give it crutches by calling it humble. Say what you mean and mean what you say.   Beware of the weed words.

Happiness is found in the circumstances of our lives, joy is found in the way we live our lives no matter what the circumstances. In The Book of Joy, the Dalia Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu give us 8 pillars of joy. The second pillar is humility. It's about finding connection with each other and value and divinity within ourselves and others. Look at the pillar of humility through the eyes of a coach – why it's important, what gets in our way, and how we can move past the obstacles to developing humility. Are you wondering if coaching is right for you? We also get rare insights from the Dalai Lama into everything from the mechanics of reincarnation to His Holiness's own personal mediation practice.  In this first installment, Dan watches as a young activist directly challenges His Holiness: In a world plagued by climate change, terrorism, and other existential threats, is the Dalia Lama's message of compassion practical — or even relevant?  Want more of The Dalai Lama's Guide to Happiness? Finding Our Rhythms In Changing Seasons: Barbara Brown Taylor Prays Us Into 2023

It's the benediction episode in our “Ending the Year with a Bang” series and what a well of wisdom we have for you. The Dalia Lama of the Christian faith who resides in and walks the trails of beautiful rural Georgia–a For the Love favorite—Barbara Brown Taylor, shares her priceless insights with us. She and Jen talk blueberry pies, retired racehorses who get a second chance at life in her backyard, and making room for friendships when the world wants us, above all else, to be productive. She shares a “Farewell to 2022” prayer that she composed specifically for this podcast community (which might have elicited a tear or two) and how considering new rhythms in our day to day might bring us new life in 2023. Barbara wants to remind us that God created this world to be enjoyed and to heal and nurture us. As we contemplate how we are looking to live in this coming year, BBT has this to say to us all: “be patient with the changing seasons and not insisting that spring be like fall or that winter be like summer; trust the change in them. There's a rhythm that is settling into a pattern and then there's a point at which the rhythm means breaking the pattern to insert a slower rhythm, a more attentive rhythm. It is a great walk of trust.”  * * * Thank you to our sponsor! BetterHelp | Visit BetterHelp.com/forthelove and get 10% off your first month   Thought-Provoking Quotes “It's been an odd liminal transition space between two heavy pandemic years and then seeing what comes next with really no assurance about what comes next. Which I think for people of faith, it is a great walk, a great kind of trust walk. So my 2022 has been a lot about deciding how much normal I want to go back to and what kind of a tempo I want to live because at this point everything's picking up again and I have found myself rushing and busy and distracted and I remember that too well and there are not enough years left to live like that. So 2022 has been for me a hinge year. It's been a year for coming to terms with age, both the fear of what that means and the invitation that it brings perhaps especially for a woman, I'm not sure about that. But the fear is about the stereotypes.” - Barbara Brown Taylor “I prayed much differently in my twenties than I did in my thirties or forties or now. So to be patient with the changing seasons and not insisting that spring be like fall or that winter, be like summer, but to be patient with the rhythms and to trust. To trust the change in them.” - Barbara Brown Taylor “Part of realizing God is with us is giving up illusions. That means that God is very chatty and always available. I mean I'm an introvert so I recognize one when I see one. And sometimes God with us means God's silent and withdrawn and that does not mean God's gone.” - Barbara Brown Taylor “My understanding of my Christian faith is it's the religion of the neighbor and it's the religion whose prime teacher said, "If you've got to choose between your religion and your neighbor, choose your neighbor…Because I never told you to love your religion.” - Barbara Brown Taylor “The faith of my childhood did not teach me that God had any interest in our pleasure…in fact the opposite was more true. The harder something was probably the godlier it was. Or the more I denied myself something that felt beautiful or wonderful, that probably meant I was being obedient…God made this world to just be so enjoyed and to heal us and to nurture us. And that feels so crystal clear, true to me now that I'm shocked that it wasn't always.”  - Jen Hatmaker “I've got to attend to the sustainability of a supple heart. And all of that means as we've been talking about kind of changing closer, further back, local, global, just finding a way to remain present to all the things you just named and more without becoming wooden or completely fatigued beyond any usefulness.”  - Barbara Brown Taylor “Hope can become a way of not being in the present, a way of refusing what is happening right now and a kind of insistence on a better thing coming. And so I'm real wary of hope unless it functions right here, right now. And so hope becomes really a wish to be more faithful to the reality I'm planted in when it's horrible and when it's lovely.” - Barbara Brown Taylor “This is the age when all the cliches come true. Life is short and grief is the price we pay for love and all fleshes grass. And guess what? Love, intimacy, closeness, friendship. That's what counts. That's what lasts.”  - Barbara Brown Taylor   Guest's LinksBarbara Brown Taylor Website Barbara Brown Taylor Facebook   Resources Mentioned in This Episode Rhythm of Prayer Book   Connect with Jen!Jen's website Jen's Instagram Jen's Twitter Jen's Facebook Jen's YouTube

The Soulfully Confident Podcast with Emily Elizabeth

As humans, we often attach our happiness to things, situations, and people.  What we don't realize is that these things aren't everlasting, and that at any moment there is this possibility of losing them.  That's why most of us end up in pain when something happens like a relationship ending, losing a job, or even when your valuable items are stolen. I know it's not easy to let go of attachment. It's a continuous battle within us.  However, our attachment to anything, no matter how valuable it is, is not worth our emotional well-being.  LETTING GO is the key to a more fulfilling life.  Today, I want to talk to you about non-attachment and its importance, benefits of practicing non-attachment, different types of attachment, and the practice of letting go so you can start living a happier life.    Episode Quotes "Our attachment to anything, no matter how expensive it is, is not worth our emotional well-being." He is an international fellow of the Explorers Club and was honored by National Geographic Society as one of six ‘Explorers for the Millennium' for his ethnographic and geographical field research in Tibet's Tsangpo gorge and his team's discovery of a waterfall that had been the source of myth and geographic speculation for more than a century. Ian is the author of seven critically acclaimed books on Himalayan and Tibetan cultural history, environment, art, and medicine including The Heart of the World: A Journey to the Last Secret Place, The Tibetan of Art of Healing, and The Dalai Lama's Secret Temple, a collaborative work with His Holiness The Dalai Lama that illuminates Tantric Buddhist meditation practices. Ian has also written for National Geographic Magazine and has contributed to academic journals in the fields of Tibetan yoga in Vajrayāna Buddhism. Ian also leads pilgrimages to sacred sites in India, Tibet, and Bhutan. In this episode of the Wisdom Keeper podcast Ian and Miles trace his own Hero's journey from his childhood expeditions in mountaineering, to his first pilgrimage to Nepal at 19 where he met some of the most celebrated Tibetan masters of the last century, to his first experience of awakening, kensho, during meditative retreat, and to his pioneering efforts to practice the Tibetan yogas under the advise of His Holiness the Dalia Lama in solitary retreat in a secret cave. The conversation cuts to the heart of dzongchen, where we dance between illusion, the self-imposed limits of mind, and the boundless luminosity of our own true nature. This is one pilgrimage you won't want to miss. In this episode Dr. Ian Baker and Miles discuss: ・His childhood interest in adventure and mountaineering which helped him learn to push beyond self-imposed mental limitations and would later inform his yogic practices. ・His college junior year abroad that took him to Kathmandu and changed the course of his life when he meet some of the greatest Tibetan masters of this century. ・Ian discusses his first break through meditative experience into the nature of mind during a college retreat and its residual impact on the course of his life. ・He describes his return to Nepal for intensive meditation retreat in a High Himalayan cave practicing the advices given to him personally by the Dalai Lama.  ・We frame Ian life as one that converges the outer, inner, and secret forms of pilgrimage.  ・Ian discusses the union of wisdom and bliss found within the nervous system and accessed through Tibetan Yogas.  ・We discuss the intersection between psychedelics Greek and Tibet mysticism, including a new research project of his exploring the use of soma in a very secret Tara cult in India. ・Finally we reflect on what it means “to go back in order to go forward.” The Wisdom Keeper Podcast is available on: APPLE PODCASTS GOOGLE PODCASTS SPOTIFY CONTEMPLATIVE STUDIES PROGRAM Courses, Community and Buddhist Pilgrimage https://www.gradualpath.com/ 25% off all courses with coupon code WISDOMKEEPER More about Dr. Miles Neale on his website https://www.milesneale.com/ Follow Miles Neale on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/milesneale/

I'm recording this review today to let you know about a special free online seminar where you'll discover how to partner with the Universe to accomplish anything you want in your life. This is WAY deeper and of higher consciousness than simply the law of attraction!?!It's presented by Dr. Jean Houston, a pioneer of the Human Potential movement, international luminary, and prolific author that has "chummed around" with the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Deepak Chopra, the Dalia Lama, Buckminster Fuller, and Margaret Mead. ( Not only this, but she's a PEACH and thoroughly enjoyable to listen to!) I just listened to her seminar this week and I have to tell you that what she is discussing is not only significant, but I too am already understanding, aligning with, and bringing into my own experience what she is articulating from her vast experience. In this seminar alone, she has put structure and understanding around the subject of quantum powers and manifestation that I am already intuiting for myself.  So, just for a moment, I invite you to imagine what the full creative power of the Universe must be to have created every unique thing on our planet — every bird, boulder, raindrop, star, and idea since the Big Bang.I have been "shown" the enormity of this power during heightened states of awareness and can assure you the truth of what Jean will be conveying to you... if you are willing to step into the courage to accept it and align with it. Now imagine that power coursing through every cell of your body and flowing out of you in every moment, creating the world and the experiences that unfold around you.I have experienced this at a high level, but I didn't understand it... This is actually how the Universe works, but the problem is that you're probably not always focused on ways that generate the kinds of positive results you want.I was NOT focused on ways that produced positive results.I created stunningly beautiful results and horrific results! Now I know better.Perhaps this type of ideating is even trickier now with the world undergoing such tremendous change, and maybe you feel like your energy is dimmed or misdirected in the midst of more chaotic circumstances than usual. The good news is that there are techniques you can master that will help you steer the power of the Universe within you in the directions you want it to go, (I have already intuitively been doing this!) and those techniques are part of one of the 5 “Quantum Powers” Dr. Jean Houston will tell you more about in her FREE Online Event: ‘The 3 Keys To Unlocking Your Quantum Powers'I recommend gettUnlock Your Quantum Powers Dr. Jean Houston on unlocking your Superpowers The most relevant FREE event you'll attend this yearBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Associate Director for Communication and Operations with Center of Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics at Emory University Carol Beck is in the studio for today's Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio episode. Joined by co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick, the group discusses the center's 21-Day Compassion Challenge designed to help individuals explore the power of compassion and learn how to practice it on a daily basis. With a Masters of Fine Arts in Filmmaking, Carol Beck started her career in the film industry as a college filmmaking professor before spending 20 years as a self-employed line producer and media professional. Her experience as a long-term contemplative practitioner and her strong producer skillset impressed Emory University who recruited her for her current position in January 2014. The Center of Contemplative Science and Compassion is a mini-unit within Emory University, but not an academic department. While it does offer programs for students and faculty, most of its work is done externally through three main programs. SEE Learning offers a K-12 curriculum that helps kids learn to be more compassionate, improve attention, gauge thinking and skills that aren't typically addressed in the everyday curriculum. The center also offers a very unique program called the Emory Tibet Science Initiative which teaches a robust science curriculum to Tibetan monks and nuns in refugee settlements in order to train future contemplative collaborators. Of course, the center also offers its popular Cognitive-Based Compassion Training (CBCT) which is aimed to help people expand their compassion to be more inclusive. Not only should compassion be inclusive, but it should also be sustainable. The best way to get acquainted with compassion and build upon your skills is to participate in the center's 21-Day Compassion Challenge! This three-week challenge is designed to help people recognize their capacity for compassion and learn how to practice it every day.  Throughout the challenge, participants explore several topics covering the power of compassion. The Compassion Challenge kicks off on March 6 at 10:30 a.m. with a Facebook Live celebration. Following the kick-off, participants enjoy experience guided meditation in multiple languages with facilitators from around the world, panel discussions, entertainment and inspirational messages from The Dalia Lama, Richard Gere and others. The challenge serves as a great introduction to the science and practical aspects of compassion while also helping to create a happier, kinder and more inclusive society. When registering at www.compassionshift.emory.edu, participants will have access to bite-sized structured exercises along with reminders and inspiration, as well as mini-instructional videos and guided meditation. A convenient online journal is also provided for self-reflection. Lessons are easy to incorporate into daily life and even easier thanks to fun active challenges that get participants to practice compassion in the real world. According to Beck, there are three components to compassion: affective (feeling empathy), cognitive (realizing other's feelings) and action (having a want to help). On an individual level, research shows many great physical benefits for showing compassion. Not only does it reduce inflammation, but it also helps with depression and anxiety. Compassion also helps to improve our sleep, makes us resonate with feelings, allows us to shift perspectives and makes us more likely to act. Socially, compassion has a powerful ripple effect that occurs unconsciously. Saying please, thank you, hello or simply smiling at someone are all simple ways to show compassion to others and shift the culture. Amy Tyre was raised in Boston and had a typical childhood. The first notice of a major shift for her happened when she moved to Arizona. This change forced her to realize that she needed to rely more on her immediate family after relying on her parents while living in Boston. However, the biggest moment for her was getting sick. She had struggled with symptoms of IBS since middle school but she did not realize this until much later. To try to solve this problem, she sought out the use of traditional medicine, only to find that this approach only made things worse. She then looked into alternative medicines. After being told by a medical intuitive that the main cause of the IBS issue was not allowing her emotions to surface, she did yoga and was able to get her emotions to surface, only to find that she did not know what to do with them. She worked with therapists to help her sort out what these emotions were. She was told by a gestalt therapist to just allow for those emotions to surface. This approach allowed her to not only get a sense of what her emotions were but also start to work through those emotions. During her recovery period, she learned that pain is not comparative. Based on all of the changes that she encountered she realized that the pain that one person feels might be very different for someone else. After allowing her emotions to surface she realized that she was miserable even though she had everything that one could want from a material standpoint. She realized that something was wrong but was unable to figure it out until much later. As she was growing and learning about her emotions, she realized that she wanted to contribute to the rise of alternative medicine practitioners as that was something that she had success with during her journey. She decided to do this by creating Alternative Medicine Connection, a site for posting experiences with alternative forms of medicine. Now, she works in yoga, something she has studied for over 20 years and is a mentor and coach, hoping to give back what she has learned through her own experiences to help others.  To find our more or to contact her go to  https://yoga-for-joy.com/  Some of the books that she had mentioned as being helpful to her throughout her journey are The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, Many Lives, Many Masters by Bryan Weiss, The Art of Happiness by the Dalia Lama, Journey of Awakening by Ram Dass, Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall and The Book of Joy by the Dalia Lama and Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu. #yoga #Alternativemedicine #emotions #allowyouremotionstosurface #painisnotcomparitave

Smiling Sundays-#421 February 25th The Strong Within Daily Affirmation Podcast Kindness Is My First Language   “Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.” ~Lao Tzu I've had the pleasure of meeting some amazingly authentic and kind people, and I've had the pleasure of meeting some major a-holes…and if I was being loving towards myself both would have the same effect on me. Meaning, I wouldn't let unkind people get to me because I know there's something more behind that wall they have up.   Sure I'd rather deal with kind people, but when we think of kindness we think about sharing it with others or others being kind to us. And we forget, that the greatest kindness is the one we direct towards ourselves.   I've always said that a world where people focused more on themselves would be a better world. And no, I'm not talking about self-centeredness, I'm talking about being kind to yourself and doing things that help you grow as an individual. For when you take time out for ourselves, when you purposefully work to be kinder to yourself, you become calmer, happier, and a more pleasant individual…because the hardest critic we will ever face will be the one in between our ears.   The Dalia Lama said his religion was kindness. What if that were our religion too? What if it were our main mission to love people no matter what…because we decided to love ourselves first. I've spent a good portion of my life spreading kindness and trying to love people to the best of my ability, even the a-holes. But sometimes I saw myself trying to love others so hard because I had so much trouble loving myself. It was my deflection tactic. If I focused more on others, then I wouldn't pay attention to the negativity I used to harbor towards myself. I figured that if I could get enough people to love me, then I might feel better about myself. And it was a painful cycle that made me feel worse because the answers that I thought would make me feel better kept me feeling even more empty inside.   How kind are you to yourself?   Do you ever look in the mirror and say “Wow! You look good today. I hope you go out and do amazing things today!” Have you ever stopped to look at a project you've been working on and say great job and pat yourself on the back celebrating the small wins along the way? Have you ever taken yourself out to a movie, or a walk, or a place that you love just because you knew you needed someone to take you to a nice place you enjoy?   I think we spend so much time trying to make others feel good, to make others feel important and loved…that we forget to love ourselves. We forget to do the things we do for other people for ourselves. As we rationalize, that would be silly to take ourselves out because we believe that if we were worth it, someone would do it for us. Or maybe we've told ourselves the story that we're too busy with everyone and everything else that there's no time for us…and so we always come last in being taken care of, if at all.   Over the past few months I've been feeling this heaviness, this resistance, this resentment inside myself. And I could blame it on other people. I could blame it on those who took me for granted, I could blame it on those who took advantage of me because they only wanted my positivity or kindness in their life. And I could even blame the a-holes of the world who hate everyone. But the reason I've been feeling this heaviness, is because I've been giving from an empty cup. I've been giving in hopes of getting back what I was giving…and that's a recipe for disaster because what we give is unique. So when we expect others to reciprocate our love exactly the same way back, that's a surefire way to be disappointed. People need the room to love in their own way, and we need to respect that.   I want to ask you a question. Are you being kind to yourself first, so you aren't having to look for that love outside of yourself? I know that's easier said than done, but learning from personal experience, people won't be there for you like you need them to be all the time. And one of the greatest ways to find comfort in any situation is to love yourself enough first before you go trying to spread every ounce of your love…to everyone else.   Now don't get me wrong in thinking I'm saying love yourself and to hell with everyone else. I think with love it always comes down to the same answer: are you loving yourself and others in a matter that keeps you balanced?   Sure, there will be days where I'm giving more love and kindness out, and there will be days where I am working to give and receive more love towards myself. We construct ourselves to be more balanced individuals by becoming aware of those days, weeks, and months that we're feeling more resistance or heaviness within…and then asking one simple question, ok maybe two: What's going on? Am I trying to force things?   When I become aware of the resistance within myself, it brings up a red flag in my mind, which makes me pause and begin a self-analysis. I then begin going through a checklist in my mind by asking what's happening for me to be this way.   When we become aware of those subtle signs in our minds and our bodies, we then begin changing not only a situation but the whole direction of our lives. Some people spend years living in their own personal hurricanes and rainstorms. And I know the world can be a hateful and mean place at times, but there's always something beautiful going on that we can put our attention towards. I believe the best way to change a negative situation is to ask, “how can I love myself more through this?” And I believe you'll find yourself not only feeling better by doing this, but you'll find the people and the situations around you changing too. Whether that be by them leaving your life, or you changing them by changing your energy.   The times that I had the greatest energy, the most hope, and the confidence to tackle anything in my path…was when I was taking time to love myself; when I was taking time to be kind to myself. We cannot transfer what is not within us. So are you sharing kindness with others, by first sharing it with yourself?   Today's Personal Commitment: How kind are you to yourself?   Do you deliberately take time out to do nice things for yourself?   I think we get so caught living in a world of doing, as we trap ourselves within the daily hustle and bustle of life, that it can be easy to take for granted what self-love can do for us.   Maybe you're good in this area, but in my experience, I've seen a lot of pain and hurt come from not loving ourselves. When people hurt us, it's easy to lash out at others. And I believe taking out our frustrations on others happens more frequently when we weren't comfortable in sharing consistent kindness within ourselves.   Because if someone wrongs you, sure it may sting, but someone who's loving themselves to the best of their ability won't take it as hard…because they're getting the love they need already. They understand people are dealing with their own demons and the hurtful action had nothing to do with them—it was just a reaction of what the other person was dealing with.   So this week, I want you to write down three things you'll do purposefully to love yourself a little more. Maybe it could be something as simple as reading a book you've been putting off because you've been too busy. Maybe it's going to the movies alone, so you aren't worried about someone else liking the movie or not, or whether you chose a movie they would've preferred. Maybe it could be going for a drive in your car when you need a break to blast the radio and sing at the top of your lungs where no one will judge you.   You decide, but I think it can be fun to take yourself out. It's fun to be kind to others, but it's even more fun to share kindness when we have shared kindness with ourselves first.   Oh and when you go on your self-date, shoot me an email to tell me what you did. I would love to share those ideas on another podcast to give people inspirations for their own self-dates. You are pretty dang sexy, you deserve to take yourself out on the town. In this episode I had the distinct pleasure and honor to sit for a highly elevated chat with one of my favorite spiritual teachers and world renowned authorities on meditation, Sharon Salzberg. She started meditating the year I was born (1970), so it goes without saying that she had some profound insights with which to enlighten our listeners. Sharon has an exceptional gift for making somewhat esoteric Buddhist teachings accessible to the masses. If you’re someone who has struggled finding meaning and application in spiritual and religious teachings, but knows deep down that you are missing out on a more rich experience of life as a result, this episode might just be the bridge you need to cross the existential gap. On the other hand, if you’re a veteran meditator and feel as though you’ve got this whole ‘mindfulness’ thing down, you will no doubt be pleasantly reminded of some basic, yet easy to forget universal truths. During this interview Sharon shares endless nuggets of simple, yet powerful wisdom that she has derived from all her years of spiritual work and teaching. From hanging out with the Dalia Lama, to sitting for thousands or hours of meditation (around 15,000 by my estimate) Sharon has unlocked the secrets to happiness, fulfillment and peace in our sometimes chaotic and confusing world. If you’re ready to take your consciousness to the next level, sit back and join me and Sharon in this guided meditation, followed by a profound, yet funny and irreverent conversation about life between a student and teacher of sorts. Please take a moment to think of one person you know who could use some help embracing a spiritual perspective on life, then share this very special episode with them. Alternatively, if you feel like everyone in the world could use a bit of enlightenment, go the extra mile by posting this show to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. You’ll be doing me, Sharon, yourself, and the world a great service. May whatever you call god bless you, Luke Topics Discussed on Today's Episode:   We talk about the fact that she’s been meditating exactly as long as I’ve been alive What it was like for her to travel to India for her first 10-day Vipassana meditation, and why she went the route of the buddhist tradition, while so many of her contemporaries leaned toward Hindu-based teachings Why she never chose to take on a special spiritual name, or wear guru costumes, and how she has managed to avoid the trappings of a spiritual ego The value in taking a ‘householders’ approach to spirituality Then Sharon treats us to a short ‘idiots guide to Buddhism’ where she breaks down the origins of the tradition and some of its teachers Why she still chooses to live in NYC some of the time, and what value a big city holds for spiritual growth Her views on social media and device addiction The fine line between making a positive contribution to the world and being a fanatical activist How she has discovered the path to freedom from the mind, and why she’s devoted her life to teaching it The fact that in life pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional We explore the idea that mindfulness is not passive, but rather surrendered action How to become free of negative attachments What is the hungry ghost, and how we can avoid being trapped by our desires How reincarnation effects our lives Sharon’s views on the value of the 12 Steps Program We talk about Real Love, her 10th book and what role compassion toward ourselves and others plays in our lives Lastly Sharon gives us her prediction on where the current spiritual movement is taking us, and how she’s hopeful for the future state of mankind’s evolution Lifestyle recommendations For MORE about this Episode WATCH IT on YouTube!   MY 90-DAY LIFESTYLE DESIGN COACHING PROGRAM Your opportunity to work with me one-on-one.
