Episode Notes Washington, D.C. will spend roughly $20 million in an upcoming campaign to help boost the city's lagging tourism recovery, writes Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam.  The global campaign — called “There's Only One DC” — will launch November 1. Habtemariam reports the campaign will support influencer collaborations, as well as advertising on social media and television. Destination DC, the city's destination marketing organization, hopes the funding injection will help it in its efforts to attract international travelers. Washington, D.C. welcomed 1.2 million foreign tourists last year, which was just 60% of its pre-Covid figure. Habtemariam cited the absence of Chinese tourists, the city's largest visitor market pre-pandemic, as one reason for Washington, D.C.'s international slump.  Next, U.S. hotel group Sonesta is facing a lawsuit about how it displays resort fees on its website and app, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill. The suit alleges that Soneta made tens of millions annually since at least 2017 by not disclosing upfront its mandatory resort and destination fees at some of its properties. O'Neill writes Sonesta isn't alone in not disclosing those fees upfront. He adds all of the major hotel groups and many smaller hotels brands have engaged in the practice of junk fees in recent decades.  Lauren Wolfe, a counsel from consumer advocacy group Travelers United, said lawsuits against more companies regarding so-called junk fees are coming. Travelers United filed the class-action suit against Sonesta.  Finally, Airbnb and New York City have often had a rocky relationship, once marked by lawsuits and numerous disputes. Associate Editor Rashaad Jorden provides a timeline documenting the tension between the city and the short-term rental giant over the past 10 years.  Jorden lists the major twists and turns in New York City's and Airbnb's relationship using Ask Skift, our artificial intelligence chatbot, and additional reporting. Airbnb has sued the city twice — including this June over measures the company called a “de facto ban” against short-term rentals. That recent lawsuit was dismissed by a judge.  In addition, Airbnb is staring at the prospect of a steep reduction in New York City listings starting September 5. That's when city authorities said they would start enforcing its host registration law for short-term rentals.

Is your dream job ‘travel influencer'? I don't blame you! There's something magical about the thought of traveling to the world's most beautiful destinations, snapping awe-inspiring photos, and sharing your experiences with tens of thousands of fans.   As with any career, there are laws and regulations in place even in the influencing space that you should be aware of before you pack your suitcase. In fact, a travel influencer was sued this spring for saying she was the first woman to travel to every country online (along with many other issues).    In this episode, Lauren Wolfe joins me to dig into this lawsuit, explain what happened, and go over why influencers need to be compliant when it comes to posting on social media.    MEET LAUREN WOLFE    Lauren Wolfe is Counsel at Travelers United, a consumer advocacy group focused on travel based in Washington, DC. When not doing consumer advocacy work, Lauren loves travel, running marathons very slowly and biking around town. She's been to over 100 countries and hopes to one day visit them all. As Counsel for Travelers United, Lauren brought the first non-profit case against an influencer for deceptive advertising and she's also the lead - and only - attorney against an army of corporate attorneys in Travelers United's suit against MGM Resorts International and their use of hotel resort fees.    Be sure to follow along with Lauren + the good work she is doing with Travelers United:   Instagram: @wolfetravellaw Website: Travelers United  Facebook: Travelers United  THE 3 BIG ISSUES WITH TRAVEL INFLUENCING TODAY    When researching this case, Lauren found there are three big issues with travel influencing today. 1) Lack of clarity about what is a sponsored post. 2) Reviews by travel influencers that are not marked as paid reviews and  3) False biographical info to make themselves seem cooler to get more fans. The influencer that was sued had all three issues along with making up sponsorships she didn't actually have. When it comes to the legal side of  influencer marketing, problems arise when influencers start promoting products, putting up affiliate links for products, or directly selling to consumers via social media or their own website and they make false claims while selling those goods.   MORE FROM THIS EPISODE    Press play on Episode #134  and you'll hear the nitty gritty of the lawsuit, Lauren's advice for influencers to make sure they are staying within FTC guidelines, why influencers need to be aware of their individual state's regulations, what rules international influencers need to follow with audiences that span the globe, and much more! If you want more helpful business advice like you'll hear on the podcast, be sure to join The Legal Paige Facebook Community where thousands of entrepreneurs just like you are getting real-time answers about running a professionally and legally legit business.

I am your host Ric Gazarian.  This is another special episode from counting countries.  Expect to hear a traditional deep dive episode next week. But this episode is timely.  It coincides with the publication of a Washington post article on April 15 in regard to Cassie De Pecol.  She is well known in the extreme travel community for claiming to be the first woman to travel to every country in the world.  Unfortunately, that claim is untrue, and now Cassie De Pecol is being sued by Travelers United, an advocacy group that works on behalf of consumers.  The 100 plus page document lays out in great detail the numerous times De Pecol makes these false claims amongst many other questionable actions. I speak with Lauren Wolfe, an attorney at Travelers United, who is an avid traveler herself.  We overview the legal complaint made against De Pecol in detail. I was in Bangkok for the recording, Doha airport to edit, and Lauren joined me from Washington DC.  Please listen in and enjoy.

Government, travel providers, consumers, and travel agents all form a web of travel rules and regulations. Delta drops 10 cities from its route map, Norwegian Cruise Line raises $2 billion to help avoid bankruptcy and Frontier Airlines gives the Sleazy Airline Award of the Year for offering to “sell” you the middle seat for $39. That’s the same middle seat that likely would have been empty. Oh, and did they mention they were going to sell that same empty seat to both the window and aisle passengers? Makes you want to run right out and buy a ticket on Frontier. What nice people they are… Travelers United is an organization which advocates for travelers, mostly in the Washington, DC, arena. We invited Charlie Leocha, President and Co-founder, to talk with us about airline refund policies and other virus-related traveler questions. Since it’s Mother’s Day, we invite you to call in and share your favorite story of travel with mom. Your mom, someone else’s mom, the lady who cared for you like a mother, your in-law. Whomever you see as mom, share that once in a lifetime trip you took.

Efforts are underway to get rid of rules that protect airline passengers.  We talk to Charles Leocha of consumer advocacy group Travelers United who is hopping mad about the DOT asking airlines to suggest changes to the rules!  That SMART TV in your living room, bedroom, office and elsewhere may be too smart and invading your privacy and compromising your security.  The President wants a parade.  Some are worried that this means a more militant United States rather than a country willing to cooperate with others. But the rebound in the jobs market could pave the way for the US central bank to raise interest rates, warns Chirs Low of FTN Financial on Wall Street. The Indian government says it's planning new rules allowing airlines to ban unruly passengers from flying. It follows a steady increase in air rage incidents worldwide, and an incident where MP Ravindra Gaikwad hit an Air India duty manager with his sandal. Charles Leocha from Travelers United.org says it is easy for stress levels to rise on packed planes. The chief executive of Goldman Sachs, the world's second largest investment bank, has warned that London "will stall" because of the risks from the Brexit process. He has told the BBC that his firm had "contingency plans" to move people depending on the outcome of the negotiations. More and more people are being allowed to take their dogs to work, which can have surprising benefits for other employees. Susannah Streeter borrowed a dog and brought it to work with her to investigate. Susannah is joined throughout the programme by Clive Hunton of ABC in Canberra, Australia.
