Once considered obsolete, the format has reestablished its presence in the music sales market, attracting collectors, audiophiles, and younger generations discovering the medium for the first time. On this episode of Music Evolves, host Sean Martin is joined by Larry Jaffee, journalist, author, and co-founder of Making Vinyl, to explore the past, present, and future of vinyl records. The History and Evolution of VinylLarry Jaffee's passion for music began early, shaped by childhood experiences with radio, tape recorders, and eventually, his first turntable. His journey mirrors that of recorded music itself—from early reel-to-reel tapes and cassettes to the dominance of LPs. Jaffee explains how vinyl records initially took hold in the 1940s, replacing fragile shellac 78s, and how the industry saw its first format war between Thomas Edison's cylinders and Emil Berliner's flat disc records.By the 1980s, however, vinyl was rapidly losing ground to compact discs, and later, digital streaming. The shift was largely driven by convenience, corporate pressure, and the record industry's aggressive push for higher-priced CDs. As labels stopped accepting returns on LPs, retailers began phasing them out. Yet, as Jaffee points out, the format never truly disappeared. Audiophile labels, collectors, and independent artists kept vinyl alive, setting the stage for its resurgence decades later. The Vinyl RevivalVinyl's comeback has been driven by multiple factors, including nostalgia, superior sound quality, and a renewed appreciation for physical media. Jaffee highlights Record Store Day, the annual event launched in 2008 that played a key role in reigniting public interest in records. Starting with just a dozen exclusive releases and a high-profile in-store appearance by Metallica, Record Store Day quickly gained traction, attracting major labels and leading to hundreds of special vinyl releases each year.Independent artists and labels have also embraced vinyl as a way to connect with fans and generate revenue. Unlike streaming, where payouts are minimal, selling a physical album—especially directly to fans—can be a major source of income for musicians. Jaffee notes that younger generations are playing a key role in sustaining the trend, with millennial and Gen Z listeners making up a growing portion of vinyl buyers.Sound Quality and the Vinyl ExperienceOne of the biggest debates in music is whether vinyl actually sounds better than digital formats. While some argue that CDs and high-resolution digital files offer cleaner sound, vinyl enthusiasts appreciate the warmth, depth, and dynamic range that analog recordings provide. The experience of playing a record—removing it from the sleeve, placing it on the turntable, and carefully dropping the needle—also adds a tactile, immersive element that digital music lacks.Jaffee discusses how vinyl manufacturing has improved in recent years, with pressing plants refining quality control and experimenting with new formulations, including colored and marbled vinyl. However, the resurgence has also exposed industry bottlenecks, with pressing plants struggling to keep up with demand. The Future of Vinyl: Sustainability and InnovationAs vinyl production increases, concerns about its environmental impact have also grown. Traditional records are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a material that Greenpeace considers among the most harmful plastics. Jaffee is now involved in efforts to create plant-based, sustainable alternatives, and his team recently produced their first eco-friendly record using a new biodegradable material. With new pressing plants opening, younger audiences embracing the format, and innovations in sustainability, vinyl's future looks promising. While digital music remains dominant, the continued demand for physical media proves that records are more than just a nostalgic novelty—they offer an experience that streaming cannot replicate.Listen to the Full EpisodeLarry Jaffee's deep knowledge of music history, industry shifts, and the cultural significance of vinyl makes this an essential episode for music fans. Tune in to Music Evolves to hear more about the making of records, the role of packaging and design, and what's next for the format that refuses to fade.SponsorsAre you interested in sponsoring this show or running ad placement in the podcast?Sponsorship

Elizabeth Jaffee, MD, is an internationally recognized expert in cancer immunology and pancreatic cancer. She is the Deputy Director of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, Co-director of the Skip Viragh Center for Pancreatic Cancer and Associate Director of the Bloomberg Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy. Her research focuses on developing novel immunotherapies for the treatment and prevention of pancreatic cancer. Dr. Jaffee is a past president of AACR. She has served on a number of committees at the National Cancer Institute including the Co-chair of the Biden Moonshot Blue Ribbon Panel which identified high research priorities for the NCI. “You can be an amazing scientist, but what's most important is that whatever you do in science has implications for the patient.” From being inspired by Dr. Marie Curie's biography as a child to now becoming one of the leading names in pancreatic cancer research internationally, Dr. Elizabeth Jaffee helps us re-focus on the patient and our role as ‘physician' scientists. Tune in to this episode of The Medicine Mentors as we journey with Dr. Jaffee to connect the science with the patient. Pearls of Wisdom:   1. Regardless of the direction we take in our professional journey, we have to keep the implications of our actions and research focused on our patients and how we can help them. 2. While leadership is a forefront activity and mentorship an educational activity, both can be thought of as similar in that you're helping someone become the best version of themselves. That means taking into account each individual's strengths and weaknesses and tailoring that to the intended outcome. 3. Don't have just one mentor. It's futile hoping that one person can teach you everything you'll need to know. Find a network of individuals that can help you, which starts by putting yourself out there as someone who wants to do more and wants help.

Dr Ally Jaffee: The Junior Doctor on why GPs don't understand how nutrition helps health and how patients are suffering

When was the last time you went to your doctor with a chronic health problem, such as high blood pressure, depression or weight gain? And what was the outcome?

Alongside your prescription to tackle the most severe complications of the condition, were you give any dietary advice to help ease your symptoms? What about any positive lifestyle changes that may put you back in control of your physical and mental health?

All too often a visit to the GP ends in packets of pills and little else, depriving millions of patients of the proactive nutrition and health-living advice that could transform how they feel with very little cost, time and effort.

Even if you haven't experienced this yourself, Dr Ally Jaffee, an NHS Junior Doctor, explains to Unfiltered that many GPs lack a deep understanding of how dietary and lifestyle changes can be potent first-line interventions for those under their care.Instead, the default approach involves prescribing drugs, a trend driven by both insufficient nutritional and lifestyle education, knowledge and confidence, Big Pharma lobbying, and - an often overlooked factor - a patient population that would prefer quick fixes through pills than undertaking a proactive lifestyle approach to their health and wellbeing.

For Dr Jaffee, this lack of training around health-helping dietary and lifestyle interventions during medical school was so much of a shock that she decided to do something about it. So she co-founded Nutritank, a pioneering nutritional education platform on a mission to revolution medical training and the healthcare system by giving doctors the information - and confidence - they need to start providing patients with additional wellbeing solutions that drugs alone. The goal? A future where doctors are empowered to offer a spectrum of treatment options that allow patients to make informed, proactive and balanced health choices, not just for the benefit of their physical health, but their mental health too.Dr Jaffee reveals her mission has received a mixed reception from her peers and senior doctors, highlighting both support and resistance for the need to shake-up medical training at its core, making nutrition and lifestyle medicine as integral as pharmacology. But she is sticking to her guns, believe that the profound impact of a balanced diet and regular exercise on patient health could significantly shift patentee outcomes and reduce reliance on long-term drug therapies, promoting a more holistic approach to healthcare. We also delved into the current climate within the NHS with Dr Jaffee painting a vivid picture of life as a junior doctor working on the frontlines of the British healthcare system that critics claim is creaking under the weight of soaring waiting lists and slashed budgets. She also reveals the reality of Junior Doctors' ongoing struggle for better pay and working conditions against the constant backdrop of accusations of greed, selfishness and dereliction of duty from some senior doctors and most of the mainstream media.Visit https://unfilteredonline.com/ or get in touch!Email: editorial@unfilteredonline.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGSV7XVaBYUYq5YidLI12owInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/unfiltered.extraTwitter/X: https://twitter.com/UnfilteredExtra

In Episode #12, we have our first For Humanity debate!! John talks with Theo Jaffee, a fast-rising AI podcaster who is a self described “techno-optimist.” The debate covers a wide range of topics in AI risk. This podcast is not journalism. But it's not opinion either. This show simply strings together the existing facts and underscores the unthinkable probable outcome, the end of all life on earth.  For Humanity: An AI Safety Podcast, is the accessible AI Safety Podcast for all humans, no tech background required. Our show focuses solely on the threat of human extinction from AI. Peabody Award-winning former journalist John Sherman explores the shocking worst-case scenario of artificial intelligence: human extinction. The makers of AI openly admit it their work could kill all humans, in as soon as 2 years. This podcast is solely about the threat of human extinction from AGI. We'll meet the heroes and villains, explore the issues and ideas, and what you can do to help save humanity. Resources Theo's YouTube Channel : https://youtube.com/@theojaffee8530?si=aBnWNdViCiL4ZaEg Glossary: First Definitions by ChaptGPT4, I asked it to give answers simple enough elementary school student could understand( lol, I find this helpful often!) Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RLHF):  Definition: RLHF, or Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback, is like teaching a computer to make decisions by giving it rewards when it does something good and telling it what's right when it makes a mistake. It's a way for computers to learn and get better at tasks with the help of guidance from humans, just like how a teacher helps students learn. So, it's like a teamwork between people and computers to make the computer really smart! Model Weights Definiton: Model weights are like the special numbers that help a computer understand and remember things. Imagine it's like a recipe book, and these weights are the amounts of ingredients needed to make a cake. When the computer learns new things, these weights get adjusted so that it gets better at its job, just like changing the recipe to make the cake taste even better! So, model weights are like the secret ingredients that make the computer really good at what it does. Foom/Fast Take-off:  Definition: "AI fast take-off" or "foom" refers to the idea that artificial intelligence (AI) could become super smart and powerful really quickly. It's like imagining a computer getting super smart all of a sudden, like magic! Some people use the word "foom" to talk about the possibility of AI becoming super intelligent in a short amount of time. It's a bit like picturing a computer going from learning simple things to becoming incredibly smart in the blink of an eye! Foom comes from cartoons, it's the sound a super hero makes in comic books when they burst off the ground into flight. Gradient Descent: Gradient descent is like a treasure hunt for the best way to do something. Imagine you're on a big hill with a metal detector, trying to find the lowest point. The detector beeps louder when you're closer to the lowest spot. In gradient descent, you adjust your steps based on these beeps to reach the lowest point on the hill, and in the computer world, it helps find the best values for a task, like making a robot walk smoothly or a computer learn better. Orthoginality: Orthogonality is like making sure things are independent and don't mess each other up. Think of a chef organizing ingredients on a table – if each ingredient has its own space and doesn't mix with others, it's easier to work. In computers, orthogonality means keeping different parts separate, so changing one thing doesn't accidentally affect something else. It's like having a well-organized kitchen where each tool has its own place, making it easy to cook without chaos!

2023-24 Frankel Institute "Jewish Visual Cultures" Today's Guest: Deborah Dash Moore Project Title: “Camera as Passport” During the 1930s, ‘40, and ‘50s, throughout the great depression and into the post-WWII era, photographers who were members of the NY Photo League, many of whom were Jews, documented working-class street life in New York City. And without quite realizing it at the time, they pioneered a new form of photography. In this episode, University of Michigan historian and Jewish Studies scholar Deborah Dash Moore tells the stories of these photographers, whom she chronicled in her latest book, Walker in the City: Jewish Street Photographers of Mid-century New York. The episode contains rich descriptions of photographs by Sol Libsohn, Dan Weiner, N.J. Jaffee, and other prominent Jewish members of the New York Photo League, whose self-imposed mission was to capture and ennoble the lives of working-class New Yorkers. The 2023-24 Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies, led by co-head fellows Deborah Dash Moore and Richard I. Cohen includes twelve scholars from four countries who are exploring various aspects of Jewish visual imagination. This exploration encompasses different periods and regions of the world and touches on interactions among the written word, sound, and image.

On this week's Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, opens the tap for a much-needed conversation with Dr. Daniel Jaffee, author of the brand new book, "Unbottled: The Fight against Plastic Water and for Water Justice," released by University of California Press, September 2023 (https://www.ucpress.edu/book/9780520306622/unbottled). Dan Jaffee is an environmental and rural sociologist, and Associate Professor of Sociology at Portland State University. He is the author of “Brewing Justice: Fair Trade Coffee, Sustainability, and Survival” (revised edition, UC Press 2014), which received the C. Wright Mills Book Award. He has published a number of articles and book chapters on water commodification and on social conflicts around bottled water. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2006. Unbottled is an exploration of bottled water's impact on social justice and sustainability, and how diverse movements are fighting back. In just four decades, bottled water has transformed from a luxury niche item into a ubiquitous consumer product, representing a $300 billion market dominated by global corporations. It sits at the convergence of a mounting ecological crisis of single-use plastic waste and climate change, a social crisis of affordable access to safe drinking water, and a struggle over the fate of public water systems. Unbottled examines the vibrant movements that have emerged to question the need for bottled water and challenge its growth in North America and worldwide. Drawing on extensive interviews with activists, residents, public officials, and other participants in controversies ranging from bottled water's role in unsafe tap water crises to groundwater extraction for bottling in rural communities, Dan Jaffee asks what this commodity's meteoric growth means for social inequality, sustainability, and the human right to water. Unbottled profiles campaigns to reclaim the tap and addresses the challenges of ending dependence on packaged water in places where safe water is not widely accessible. Clear and compelling, it assesses the prospects for the movements fighting plastic water and working to ensure water justice for all. This episode finds me chatting with Larry Jaffee, who started and runs an initiative called Making Vinyl, which focuses on the manufacturing and upkeep of vinyl production in the music industry. Larry also wrote a book called Record Store Day: The Most Improbable Comeback of the 21st Century, about the re-emergence of vinyl records over the course of the last fifteen years or so (something I, as a major music nerd, have been keeping a keen eye on). Larry goes deep for this one. We discuss their growing up in the racially fraught Sixties, busing and being a part of "white flight" out of NYC into Long Island, we talk about relationships, parenthood and divorce, and we talk about Larry's ongoing quest to come to terms with their non-binary gender identity.  Anyway, our assigned hour went super fast and we had to do a hard stop because we both had other commitments, but rest assured, there will be a Part II at some point. In the meantime, enjoy!

Summary: Wondering how to deal with volatility and protect your gains defensively? David Jaffee comes on the show to discuss some strategies for trading based on how the market is progressing. He suggests that people hedge and take the opposite side, and also recommends buying elongated put options. This, in addition to taking the contrarian standpoint when investing, can help to reduce your portfolio volatility. Tune in for more insight. Highlights: -How do you deal with volatility? Should you put everything into cash or look for alternative strategies? -What is a poor investor to do, and how do you protect your gains from the last few decades defensively? -People need to make sure that they hedge and take the opposite side -It's wise to end up buying puts -You can buy elongated put options that are two years in duration, which will reduce your portfolio volatility -It's good to be a contrarian. When everyone is scared, it could be a good time to buy shares -Similarly, when the stock market goes up and people are euphoric, disciplined investors are buying protection because the market goes down a lot faster than it goes up -As long as you don't trade too big, you're safe -When the market is oversold, it's better to buy elongated call options -In this moment, the risk-reward is favorable for buying elongated call options Useful Links: Financial Survival Network Best Stock Strategy
