The Big Bull of Dalal Street, India's Warren Buffett, Man with the Midas Touch, the Eternal India Optimist, King of the Stock Market – the legendary investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala carried many nicknames. His death on Sunday at 62, prompted an outburst of tributes from businesspersons, politicians and investors big and small who followed his insights and stock bets. Jhunjhunwala's investing career started in 1985 with 5,000 rupees of borrowed money. At the time of his death, his net worth is estimated at $5.8 billion or 46,000 crore rupees. His first big profit came from the 5,000 shares of Tata Tea he bought in 1986. In three months, Jhunjhunwala tripled his money. There was no looking back after that.    In the late 1980s, the qualified chartered accountant made a leveraged bet on iron ore exporter Sesa Goa which brought him his first crores. He bought the stock at 25-26 rupees and sold the holding in tranches, riding the stock till it reached 2,200 rupees. His investment in Tata Power also paid off at the time.  Jhunjhunwa's affinity for Tata group stocks continued. In fact, Tata's Titan Company made him the most wealth. He first purchased the jewellery and watch maker's shares in 2002.  His other stock holdings from Tata group were Tata Motors, Indian Hotels Company and Tata Communications. He also multiplied his investments several times in stocks such as Lupin and CRISIL.  His biggest holding at the time of death remained Titan, accounting for over Rs 11,000 crore or one-third of disclosed portfolio value.  Although famous for his bets in listed stocks, Jhunjhunwala did not shy away from taking bigger risks through private market investments He reaped a windfall when three of his portfolio companies, Nazara Technologies, Metro Brands and Star Health and Allied Insurance, hit the public markets last year.  A Business Standard analysis showed that 76% of the value of Jhunjhunwala's disclosed portfolio emerged in the last seven years after he turned 55 and the biggest gains came in the past two years. The value of his disclosed portfolio rose from 8,431 crore rupees in March 2020 to 30,652 crore rupees in August 2022.  Raamdeo Agrawal, Chairman & Co-Founder, Motilal Oswal Financial Services says, he was an ‘economic philosopher', liked making predictions. Jhunjhunwala was a terrific bargain picker and he always tried to help his friends, be it with money or guidance, says Agrawal.  Rakesh Jhunjhunwala was astute not just as an investor who picked stocks for long-term holding but as a trader too. In 2018, he said he made a lot of money by shorting stocks and one of his biggest fortunes came from short selling in 1992 when the Harshad Mehta scam roiled the markets.  Rakesh Jhunjhunwala had his misses too in stocks, like Dewan Housing Finance Corporation, DB Realty and Mandhana Retail While some of his private investments paid off handsomely, In March last year, he acknowledged that half of his 20 private equity investments by then had turned out to be duds. His last bet was Akasa Air, in which he held a 40% stake. Motilal Oswal's Agarawal described this bet as the ultimate bargain, as Jhunjhunwala made the most of the discounts offered by the aircraft manufacturer.    Jhunjhunwala made his last public appearance at the inaugural flight of Akasa, on August 7th.  Among India's notable philanthropists, Jhunjhunwala's faith in the India story and bullish commentary on the economy and markets was visible till the very end.  Such was his infectious optimism for India that Jhunjhunwala told a business news channel six days before his death, that regardless of global developments, Indian markets will grow, but at a slower pace. According to him, India was entering a golden age.

This episode features Jim Albert, Chairman & Co-Founder, Neptune Flood Guest Bio Jim Albert founded the insurtech startup Neptune Flood in 2016 based on a business model leveraging artificial intelligence and data analytics to make it easy to buy flood insurance.  Neptune, with business in 48 states and over 60,000 policies, is the fastest growing private flood insurer in the US. Prior to forming Neptune, he was CIO at a US insurer, ran a group of technology businesses in the UK, and led the consulting firm Idea Integration. Jim holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from Vanderbilt University, and received additional education at Wharton, INSEAD, and Cornell. Highlights from the Show Neptune was founded in 2016 by Jim Albert and Bill Martin to make it easy to buy flood insurance There are about 5.5 million insured homes for flood risk, but about 60 million homes actually at risk, so this is a currently-small market that isn't protecting enough of the people at risk The average loss in Hurricane Harvey was $117k, and 80% of the homes did not have insurance for the water damage Using advanced analytics based on third party data presented a real opportunity to do better underwriting faster, with less effort on the part of the customer The dominant player in the space is the US government, with the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which takes weeks to get coverage in place at high cost with limited coverage Neptune asks three questions (vs. 54 from NFIP), and can provide a bindable quote in 45 seconds (down from the 2 minutes they started with, so it's getting faster and easier) Rather than cutting the insights they get by asking few questions, they stopped asking things they knew or could know from a verifiable third party, so their accuracy is higher than if they asked for the data, and get more data than they could ask for from 150 external data sources Digital insurance was very new when Neptune was setting up, so it was tough to find capacity willing to back an MGA without an underwriter, but Neptune found support at Lloyd's, and found that regulators are starting to recognize the benefit to consumers from model-based underwriting Neptune just launched their Commercial offering on a direct basis, on top of their residential product through multiple channels (agents, brokers, other carriers, direct, partners like realtors and mortgage brokers) Neptune seeks to be present in the transaction where you think about needing insurance, like buying your home, rather than having to sell it to you when you aren't thinking about it Themes in the industry going forward Advice for startups What Jim is most proud of is being able to expand the market to protect more people than were being protected from flood in the past This episode is brought to you by Medallia (Medallia.com), and the book series, The Future of Insurance: From Disruption to Evolution, by Bryan Falchuk (future-of-insurance.com). Bram Cohen is an American computer programmer, best known as the author of the peer-to-peer (P2P) BitTorrent protocol, as well as the first file-sharing program to use the protocol, also known as BitTorrent which grew to over 40% of Internet Traffic. Bram is also the co-founder of CodeCon and organizer of the San Francisco Bay Area P2P-hackers meeting, the co-author of Codeville and was also featured in 2005 Time's 100 Most Influential People. But here in 2019, he is the CTO, Chairman & Co-Founder of Chia. The Chia Network is a decentralized open-source global blockchain which is less wasteful, more decentralized, and more secure. It is inspired and similar to the Bitcoin blockchain, but in Chia the resource is not computing power, but disk space. To achieve this, the “proofs of work” used in Bitcoin are replaced by “proofs of space”, so disk-space becomes the main resource. This is combined with “proofs of time” to come to a decentralized “Nakamoto-style” consensus that validates transactions. I wanted to find out more about the man who created BitTorrent sitting in his living room on a laptop, as an unknown programmer in San Francisco. But more importantly the incredible work he is doing right now with Chia. Bram Cohen joins me on the Tech Talks Daily podcast, to talk about all this and much more.

My favorite question that helps me get through so many challenges in my life and in my business is, "why?" Not just, "what is my why?" but, "why this goal?", "Why did we end up where we are right now?" "Why did my brother die so young?". Get the idea? I never forgot the other questions like, Who?, What?, When?, Where? and How? but they were not the questions that seemed to unlock the door to my inner knowing like why? did.
