It's been called “The World's Greatest Deliberative Body.”  One-third of its members are elected every two years, and serve six year terms.  Presided over by the Vice President of the United States.  We are of course talking about the United State Senate.  The Founders created the Senate with a purpose, to be a place when debate happens as a “House of Reason.”  To walk us through the Senate and what separates it from the way the House of Representatives does business, we are thrilled to have two guests on our show this week.  Josh Holmes, host of the popular “Ruthless” podcast, served as Chief of Staff to Speaker Mitch McConnell from 2010-2013 and also worked in the U. S. House of Representatives.  Jade West served as Staff Director of the U.S. Senate Republican Policy Committee and as Executive Director of the U.S. Senate Steering Committee.

As such, I had the great privilege to interview and get to know a candidate running for a United State Senate seat here in Utah. Her name is Becky Edwards. She shared stories of how the Church has impacted her political life and helped her emphasize listening. She shared stories of successes and failures during her time in the Utah State House of Representatives, and even talked about how perceived failures can turn into successes when given enough time.It is incredible to see how members of the Church are impacting so many areas of life.  During the interview, Becky said something that I think is indicative of her political philosophy, "I want the average Utahn to look at a piece of legislation and say, 'That actually connects with my life.  That makes a difference.'"To learn more about Becky and her candidacy go to beckyforutah.com.

Four (now five) people are dead and many more injured after radical Trumpsters lay siege to the U.S. Capitol building. Decades of the GOP stoking the fires of racism, conspiracy theories, and ideologically driven media is coming home to roost. Fire’s like that. Only fools believe that they can tame a wildfire.  After hours of delays due to the Trumpster insurrection, the results of the Electoral College Vote was officially counted and Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be sworn into office in less than two weeks.  It’s time to break out your copies of Timothy Snyder’s On Tyranny, or pick up a copy if you don’t have one yet. The escalating violence is part of the authoritarian playbook. This does not bode well for 2021.  Some Democrats initially tried to simply “get back to normal” following the failed coup, but it’s becoming increasingly impossible for them to do so. Pressured by Democratic House and Senate members, Pelosi and Schumer are now calling for Trump’s removal though the 25th Amendment or impeachment. This is a quickly developing story.  Congresswoman Katherine Clark told CNN this morning that House Democrats are preparing an impeachment vote by the middle of next week if Trump isn’t removed by the 25th amendment.  All of that happened after Democrats scored historic victories in the Georgia runoff elections. Rafael Warnock and Jon Ossoff victories give Democrats control of the Senate with Kamala Harris as the tie breaker.  And THAT came after Trump was recorded trying to intimidate Georgia election officials to give him enough votes to give the Georgia election to Trump.  The other big news of the week seems almost trivial at this point.  Pennsylvania Senate Republicans this week gave their one preview of what we saw unfold in DC this week. PA Senate Republicans led by Senate President Pro Tempore Jake Corman refused to seat incumbent, reelected State Senator Jim Brewster. Corman and Senate Republicans forcefully seized control from Lt. Governor John Fetterman who was presiding over the session. John Fetterman hinted about his candidacy for the United State Senate on twitter this morning. Kutztown University President Kenneth Hawkinson announced that he has tested positive for COVID. Kutztown University has some of the worst COVID numbers in PA higher education after Hawkinson demanded a return to in-person classes in Fall 2020. Kutztown has more than 430 confirmed cases of COVID among students and staff. Hawkinson’s announcement comes at a time of spiking COVID cases in Berks County, passing 25,000 cases this week.  And in more Kutztown University news, a man in a Kutztown hat was captured on film assaulting an AP photojournalist at the Trumpster insurrection. It’s good to be golden, I guess.  The full 2021 calendar for space launches and missions is out. We’ll have links and highlights for what looks to be a pretty active year in space.  And, of course, we’ll take you through some of the Free Will Brewing releases ready for 2021.

The fight over President Donald Trump’s wall entered a new stage today as the United State Senate passed a bipartisan border security plan. The 83-16 Senate vote advances the bill to the House for a vote Thursday night. The measure requires a signature by Trump in time to avert another partial government shutdown this weekend. The measure would finance 55-miles of fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border, significantly less that Trump wanted. The vote came shortly after the White House announced the president would use emergency powers to build additional miles without approval from Congress. Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell said he would support Trump’s decision to use emergency powers. McConnell had previously said he opposed the use of them. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said all options were open to counter Trump’s threat. She said a lawsuit is possible and accused trump of an attempt to undermine democracy. The Center for Constitutional Rights, a New York based progressive legal organization has been suing the Trump administration over its border policies. Staff attorney Angelo Guisado says at the heart of Trump’s threat of declaring a national emergency is an appeal to his xenophobic, anti-immigrant base. Meanwhile on capitol hill… The Senate on Thursday voted to confirm William Barr as attorney general, 54-45. The confirmation of Trump's nominee, who will oversee special counsel Robert Mueller's probe, had been expected given the GOP's 53-47 control of the chamber. He was sworn in several hours later at the White House. Barr, 68, who has been counsel at the Kirkland & Ellis law firm, served as attorney general under President George H.W. Bush from 1991 until 1993, following an 18-year civil service career that began at the CIA. The new attorney general, nominated by Trump in December to replace Jeff Sessions, will be only the second person to hold the job twice. While attorney general under the Bush administration he facilitated the presidential pardons of several officials either charged or convicted of crimes.. including Elliot Abrams who is now Trump’s special envoy to Venezuela. A former reporter for the Washington Post, Jefferson Morley is editor of the Deep State Blog. He says Barr defended the actions of the Central Intelligence Agency during the Iran-Contra scandal.. Moreley adds that Barr is a supporter of broad presidential powers. ————————————————— Meanwhile In a luncheon speech to a U.S.-led Middle East security conference in Warsaw, Vice President Mike Pence calls on German, France, and Britain to withdraw from the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement. The signature deal of former President Barack Obama was overturned by Trump, but is still supported by the other signatories. Dan Kovalik is author of The Plot to Control the World: How the US Spent Billions to Change the Outcome of Elections Around the World He says Trump is picking potential war criminals to spearhead his plans in South America and Iran.
