Maricella Xiong of St. Paul admires the work of Urban Roots, a nonprofit community and safe space that serves local youth. This November, around the Hmong New Year, local Hmong youth dressed in their traditional Hmong clothes and took photograph portraits at the Urban Roots' Rivoli Bluffs Farm. Youth at Urban Roots then selected the final pictures for the show. “I thought it was a phenomenal expression of cultural revitalization, indigenous solidarity, and Hmong indigeneity in general," says Xiong. The photo exhibit “Rooted Legacy” is on view now in the front window display of Indigenous Roots, which is a center for arts and activism dedicated to “Native, Black, Brown and Indigenous peoples” in St. Paul. Xiong also recommends stepping inside to enjoy Indigenous Roots' excellent café and programming. Rachel Mock of Duluth's Magic Smelt Puppet Troupe has long been a fan of Bold Choice Theatre Company. Its veteran stage actors are all adults with disabilities, and they've been working for more than a year on this Saturday's country western musical “Sundown on the Jasper County Jewel.” The original show has songs and music by Duluth's Toby Thomas Churchill. In the show, a traveling band shows up for their booking at the Jasper Jewel, a grand old country music hall that has most decidedly seen better days. Based on past experiences, Mock is looking forward to a high-caliber event with good music and some classic western danger, romance and intrigue. The musical is one night only, this Saturday, Jan. 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Duluth Playhouse.  Improv actor and comedian Bailey Murphy of Minneapolis is glad that “Off Book” is back at HUGE Improv Theater this weekend. The half-improv, half-scripted show is a long-running HUGE Theater favorite. Murphy has acted in the show several times over the years, but every night is different. The performance is adapted with permission from Upright Citizen Brigade's Gravid Water. In it, one actor goes on stage with a memorized script for a show, and the other must improv their way through. No matter what the improv actor throws at them, the scripted actor must stay on script. Murphy says the show always gets huge laughs.  “Off Book” opens Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m. and runs Saturdays through Feb. 24.

Sujata is a performer, writer, and director for TV & Film. You may know her from the Upright Citizen Brigade's Asian AF show, from her involvement with Sundance as a Lab Fellow and a Film Festival influencer, or from her characters in film and TV. Those include Cece in The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl or Sarah in HBO's Insecure. More recently, she acted, wrote, and directed in her first independent full-length feature film, Definition Please. The movie, which has been touring the film festival circuit, discusses mental health and family relationships in the context of a Bengali family. And the protagonist is a washed up Spelling Bee champion… a story which may hit painfully close for those of us in the diaspora with a dusty third grade trophy somewhere in the house. In this episode, Sujata talked about why she got an engineering degree despite knowing that she would be an actress from a young age, in addition to the hilarious stories behind her transition from consultant to actress. She shared the moment that got her moving on her dream project, and how she convinced actors that have been in Scrubs, The Jungle Book, and other major productions to take a chance on her independent film. Lastly, she talked about making a South Asian film where an identity crisis was not the central conflict and how she avoided stereotyping while still crafting a relatable story in Definition Please.

Monte Montepare and I grew up together in Summit County, Colorado. During our conversation, we catch up on the current state of what it means to be a comedian and adventure guide during the COVID Pandemic.Monte owns Kennicott Wilderness Guides in Kennicott Alaska, and for the past 4-5 years, he has been pursuing comedy and telling stories in Los Angeles. Kennicott Wilderness Guides is at the end of a 60-mile dirt road and offers trips into Wrangell- St. Elias National Park including; glacier hiking, ice climbing, pack rafting, and bush plane backpacking expeditions. Monte recently joined the Upright Citizen Brigade on a weekly show called Harold night. He talks about this being one of the big goals he had when moving to LA and diving into the entertainment scene. Monte talks about how COVID - 19 has affected his life, all of the ways he has of making money involve large gatherings of people or travel. Monte's momentum in his comedy pursuits came to a screeching halt and he is currently navigating the next phases of how he is going to operate. He is working on a creative way to engage through improv zoom, but discovering that its difficult for him and he is being pushed to develop other skills that are not his strong suit. We talk about Alaska and his guide business and the logistics that Monte has to navigate to figure out what the summer season will look like for his business. What does guiding in the COVID world look like? Monte keeps coming up short and realizing we still need more information before making any final decisions. Monte explains an authentic way of thinking about choices - Sometimes there isn't a good choice, sometimes the choices are all hard but you have to get somewhere. We hear about some of the local adventures he has been taking. Monte's been hanging out in the San Gabriel Mountains and finding new routes to the top of some of the peaks. Recreating close to home reminds Monte that you can still have big dreams about smaller places and be rewarded. We nerd out for a minute about pack rafting and fantasize about a desert river trip towards the end of the summer. Globally recognized for his Stella Artois Superbowl commercial starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Jeff Bridges,  Andrew Pifko, the award-winning actor and comedian is no stranger to Hollywood and has a comprehensive body of work in film, theater and voice. With countless series and guest appearances under his belt in both comedy and drama, the classically trained actor has his sights set on becoming a household name.  On the big screen, Pifko will be disrupting audiences playing the title role in the acclaimed drama DADDY ISSUES premiering April 19th in cities across North America (will also be available on iTunes). The film centers around Maya (Madison Lawlor), a queer pixie artist who meets and falls madly in love with her insta-crush, Jasmine. It's all gumdrops and fairytales until Maya discovers Jasmine's passionate relationship with a secret sugar daddy Simon Craw (Andrew Pifko). For his role, Andrew was nominated for “Best Lead Actor” at the Nice, France International Film Festival and won in the same category at the NoVa Film Festival in Virginia. On the small screen, Andrew will have a recurring role in as a swashbuckling Robin Hood-esque bandit in BYUtv’s ‘Dwight In Shining Armor’ airing Monday nights and will be heard as a series regular, voicing multiple characters, on Netflix’s ‘Carmen Sandiego’ alongside Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez.  He also recently wrapped ‘Greek Gods’, with comedy icon Mel Brooks, taking an acerbically comic look at the immigration debate.  When he’s not on set,  Andrew can be seen singing and performing as the lead in Second City Hollywood’s production of ‘More Guns: The NRA Musical’ (now extended until August 2019) every Saturday evening at 8:30pm at Second City Hollywood. https://www.secondcity.com/shows/hollywood/more-guns/ Pifko also often performs with the music and rap improv group ‘Kaboombox’ and ‘Robot Teammate and the Accidental Party.’ This Canadian native holds an Honors degree in Zoology and Microbiology from the University of Toronto and is a graduate LAMDA, U.K. post-grad classical program. As an extension of his pre-med studies, Andrew gained certifications in Research, Night and Rescue Scuba Diver on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. He also spent a year in both Japan and Israel teaching English before eventually becoming an actor and graduating from the Upright Citizen Brigade’s Improv and Musical Improv programs. This modern-day renaissance man also enjoys riding his motorcycle and getting his hands dirty, having just completed a 2-year renovation of a classic 1929 Hollywood Hills home to bring it back to its former stature. To no surprise, his many voice over projects and travels have led him to master many languages including German, Japanese, French and Hebrew. Andy’s television credits include David Fincher’s “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “Criminal Minds,” “NCIS:LA,” “The Big C,” “ANT Farm,” “The Mentalist,” “Playmakers,” “Queer As Folk,” and as a notably darker ‘Walt Disney’ in Screen Junkie’s “Roast of Beauty and the Beast”. Comical Radio
Ep. 707: Comical Radio- Upright Citizens Brigade Invades Comical Radio

Bam! Comical Radio abruptly assaults the airwaves with no time to warm up. Why? Let's say technical difficulties and red tape as far as the eye can see. But hey, when something goes wrong, improvise. Improvising was a recurring theme on today's show which started with Upright Citizen Brigade's very own founding member, Matt Besser. Matt discussed studying improv under the late, great Del Close and how Steve Martin and Andy Kaufman. Still more was discussed concerning Besser's cut of UCB, reparations for Amy Poehler's success and Danny's futile attempts to pick up UCB classes where he left off... 6 years ago. Oh and parties, my god, the parties. Passing out at one of these shindigs can be neatly improvised as simply falling asleep. In all, it was probably the worst Besser interview of all time. We at comical radio are always striving for the record books. Next up was a fistful of awkward via telephone with the gentlemen of Magic Hugs (Scott Blair and Tim Wilkerson.) Outside the hilarious video this duo produces let's just say common interests were sorely lacking. But hey, that makes for some good radio. Completing the UCB double-dip was Chris Hines, the veteran imrpov instructer at UCB theater. Once again Danny tries to bargain his way back into UCB Theater to no avail, but there's no harm in trying. Maybe because he's a dastardly stand-up comic who has no right to ride the coattails of fine improvisational actors. Kasten might have a shot, though, with his best pedophiliscious Santa Claus. Live in the studio was up and coming music act, Swear and Shake. These serenading sweethearts warmed the studio with their folk-pop prowess, despite Kasten's Simon Cowell-esque disposition. Lastly was a phone call from Steve Rannazzisi of FX's "The League." Unfortunately, due to time constraints the interview was shorter than his tongue-twisting last name. Steve still had time to assure us the listeners that The League is not as much for football fans as it for those who just really hate their friends. But when your friends are A-Holes, just improvise.
