Earlier this spring, we hosted our first-ever live podcast event at Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, Georgia, Healing in Real Time. On that special night, in a room full of our loyal fans and supporters, we explored what it looks like to live healthy online and offline. I'm still so full from getting the chance to connect with so many of you. For those who couldn't make it, we've recorded the conversation for you to enjoy from the comfort of your home. My colleagues and friends, Dr. Ayanna Abrams and Dr. Joy Beckwith, joined me on stage to discuss what it looks like to set boundaries around what gets shared on social media, what happens when the IRL spills onto the web, and what to do when social media trends trigger old hurts. And that's not all – we didn't forget about the audience questions, they'll be released in a bonus episode later this week. So get ready, grab a snack, find somewhere comfy, and enjoy the show. Playing with markers, clay, and stencils is something we may recall fondly from our youth, but today dismiss as childish. Art Therapy, however, is a very legitimate and relaxing form of therapy for all ages that challenges us to think through our emotions by putting pen to paper. To tell us more, today we're joined by Chicago based artist and registered art therapist, Pierra D. Brown. Since graduating with her Master's from the School of the Art Institute, she's worked both in communities, schools, and hospitals to provide clinical services to people of all ages. During our conversation, Pierra and I discuss the training needed to become an art therapist, how art therapy can be used as an alternative or in supplement with traditional talk therapy, and what art therapy can teach us about shedding our perfectionist habits. One of life's most profound and devastating experiences can be losing a spouse. It's a journey that can be marked by sorrow and the reshaping of one's identity, but it's not one you have to go on alone. For today's conversation, I'm joined by author, veteran journalist, and speaker Leslie Streeter. Leslie is the author of the memoir, “Black Widow: A Sad-Funny Journey Through Grief for People Who Normally Avoid Books with Words Like "Journey" in the Title.” A native of Baltimore, Maryland, she and her work have been featured in The Washington Post, CNN, the Atlantic, and more. During our conversation today, Leslie and I discuss the shifting stages of grief in the aftermath of losing a spouse, how having a village aided her through the death of her spouse, and what our society gets wrong about helping loved-ones through a grief experience. One consequence of the pandemic was that it forced us to take inventory of all of the things in our life that we may be unsatisfied with, and for many of us, career is at the top of that list. Maybe you want to try on some new hats in the same field, or even pivot to a new industry entirely, but the question often is, how do I get started? Joining me today to answer that question is author and career coach, Janice Sutherland. Having successfully navigated multiple mid-career transitions herself, Janice specializes in helping mature Black women seek meaningful career and life transformations in their midlife. During our conversation, Janice and I discussed some workplace red flags that may indicate it's time for a career change, overcoming the financial and personal fears that stop us from making a necessary pivot, and how to set yourself up for success once a change has been made. #905 - Bahamas The Bahamas Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? If you're here, won't ya tell me? I know you're here because that's where you're comfortable, listening to The Paul Leslie Hour, a show that's been going for 19 years and God-willing will keep on goin'! We have an interview today with a singer-songwriter, recording artist. He's an act who goes by the name…Bahamas. Really nice fella. You'll meet him. Bahamas, birth name Afie Jurvanen, did this interview with Paul Leslie, quite literally, on the street of Atlanta, Georgia. He was playing at the Variety Playhouse years ago. They couldn't quite find the right place and so they ended up walking down the street and sitting down on some steps right near the street. The original recording which went out over the radio was kind of noisy. You do what you can! All these years later, we've cleaned up that recording so all of the good people on Spotify, Apple, iHeartRadio and elsewhere have the best listening experience possible. We've got a lot of interviews and reviews that will be added for the remainder of 2023 on YouTube. You know, YouTube. Well, you can subscribe to_ _Paul Leslie's YouTube channel and ring the bell, and you'll always be in the loop, see. It's free to do it and we'd sure appreciate it. Before the interview begins, just keep in mind that Bahamas is going on tour this fall. Check him out. Tell him The Paul Leslie Hour sent you. Also, there's a new record coming out on September 15th. You heard that here. Who's ready to hear what Bahamas had to say to interviewer Paul Edward Leslie? I think it's time we listened. Together.
#892 - Paula Cole The Paula Cole Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? Thank you for being here, listening to The Paul Leslie Hour! We've got an interview from the archives. In fact, this one is the very first on-camera interview Paul Leslie ever did, it goes back 10 years ago. We're talking about the very first Paula Cole interview! It is one of Paul's interviews that has received the most feedback through the years. Paula Cole is a very talented singer-songwriter. She was performing at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta and was kind enough to speak with Paul. The interview is a very honest exchange. We've got hundreds upon hundreds of interviews on YouTube. Please consider subscribing to Paul Leslie's YouTube channel where you will be able to enjoy exclusive content just like this. I think it's time to start the show. Don't you think? The Paul Leslie Hour is a talk show dedicated to “Helping People Tell Their Stories.” Some of the most iconic people of all time drop in to chat. #870 - George Duke The George Duke Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? We've got you tuned in don't we? Yeah, you're here indeed, listening to The Paul Leslie Hour. We've got something meaningful and enjoyable for you, ladies and gentlemen. This is an archival interview with George Duke, a legend of music. The interview was recorded in George Duke's hotel room in Atlanta, Georgia. It was before he was to perform at the Variety Playhouse. George Duke was a composer, recording artist, producer, and singer-songwriter. He was born on January 12, 1946 and sadly passed away August 5, 2013. His contributions to music were immense. Some of you may be aware that April is Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM). Well, if you want to appreciate some jazz, we recommend listening to this interview and then delving into the George Duke discography. Lots of jazz in there, and some jazz-funk, Brazilian music and more. We invite you to listen to the man's work. George Duke's handlers told Paul that he had 15 minutes with George. Paul knocked on the door, and away they went. What you're about to hear is what went down. You'll hear about his early days and also about his time with Frank Zappa. It was a warm-hearted little chat. We're doing all we can get to get more and more content like this out there to the masses. Please like The Paul Leslie Hour on Facebook so you can stay updated and help us in our mission. We thank you. And now, here is the interview with the late George Duke. Let's listen together. #746 - Marcia Ball The Marcia Ball Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. So, we have a short interview from the archives and it's just for you. Marcia Ball is a renowned blues singer and pianist. Paul E. Leslie has had the grand pleasure to see her a couple of times in concert, and her records are worth seeking out. Marcia Ball was born in Orange, Texas. So she's Texas born, but really she was raised and I guess you could she's from Vinton, Louisiana. She has a lot of the Gulf Coast and Louisiana influence in her work. Whether she's performing her own songs or someone else wrote, it's distinctly Marcia Ball. People who love real music love her material and have for years. So, this interview with Marcia Ball was taped out doors. It was recorded at this funky coffee shop in the very funky Little Five Points neighborhood of Atlanta. She was playing at the Variety Playhouse, naturally. They had just a few minutes to talk before Marcia Ball would be taking the stage. Now, maybe you have just a minute to help support the show. We're thankful that you're listening to this - but we would be forever grateful to anyone who can do the extra good deed by going to thepaulleslie.com/support It keeps this show going. And right now, we're about to embark on new goals and your help will allow us to get to that next level. Let's start the show. Take us back there.

Together they'll dispense justice on cases having to do with chocolates in trail mix, favorite colors, and more during Swift Justice. Thank you to Jon Combs for naming this week's case! To suggest a title for a future episode, follow Judge John Hodgman on Facebook. We regularly put out a call for submissions.
Today we riff a bit; reflecting on events of last year & chatting about some of the things we're looking forward to in 2020.Thanks for listening to us ramble on! ~ CV & KG

Born to musician parents, Ethan was exposed to guitar and vocals from the moment he was born. After telling his mom that he wanted to "sing like Steve Perry and play guitar like Eddie Van Halen," Ethan began formal guitar lessons, singing and performing at 7 years old. His early passion for music was nurtured by instructors such as Benjamin Ryan Williams, bassist for the Indigo Girls; Heber Pampillon, guitarist for Kickin' Valentina; and Greg Lee, bassist for Yacht Rock. At the age of 12, Ethan began teaching himself at home. Inspired by the music of the Goo Goo Dolls, John Mayer, U2, Van Halen and Stevie Ray Vaughan, he has developed a diverse playing style that he is constantly working to perfect. You will rarely see him without a guitar in his hands. Over the years, Ethan has performed at Variety Playhouse, Smith's Olde Bar, Vinyl, the Masquerade, the 10 High and many other venues in the Atlanta area --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/support

Seth and Rob had one night together before they won’t see each other for several weeks, so they fired up this spontaneous episode. After a nod to Ben and Jerry’s new “It’s Ice…..Cream” flavor, Polay and Clark, Osiris and the Alternate Routes podcast, the hosts announce that friends of the show Great Peacock and Infamous Stringdusters will be doing four dates together March 27-30. The hosts talk about Great Peacock and play their recent track “Rattlesnake,” which features Tom Blankenship of My Morning Jacket on bass. Upcoming show events are discussed including Atlanta’s Holiday Hootenanny which will take place at The Variety Playhouse on December 20, and features Peter Rowan, Larry Keel, Jeff Mosier and others. Then the guys talk about the coming Umphrey’s McGee New Year’s run, and in particular the December 29th show. Tauk have agreed to divert their routing so that they can open that show, and late-night reignite the ferocious hybrid Tauking McGee. The guys talk about Tauk’s 2018 Shapeshifter II release and they end the episode by playing, “”Recreational Outrage” from that cd. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Blair Crimmins & The Hookers joins us in the studio! This is the trio version of the group, sans horns and dancing girls. When people ask Blair what kind of music he plays, he makes it real simple. He just says "Ragtime". And boy does he do it well. We're very happy to say that we got more music on this show than we bargained for, and had a great time as usual goofing around with the band, and sporadically finding out more about them. We're honored to say that Atlanta is home to a band playing original music in this traditional style. Very cool. Enjoy! And as always, please tell a friend or two about our show. They'll love you for it! *DO NOT MISS Blair Crimmins and the Hookers playing at The Variety Playhouse in Atlanta THIS SATURDAY 12/1/2012 with recent podcast guests The Whiskey Gentry! http://www.variety-playhouse.com/ http://www.blaircrimminsandthehookers.com/ https://www.facebook.com/blaircrimminsandthehookers https://www.facebook.com/twofacesradio
In this episode of Sidewalk Radio, our host Gene Kansas explores the art, music, mayhem and culture of this alternative enclave that includes Elvis shrines and disco nights (Star Bar), record stores (Criminal Records, Wax n Facts), raucous retail (Junkman's Daughter), thrift havens (Stefan's), booze (Euclid Avenue Yacht Club), books (A Cappella), bands (Variety Playhouse), co-op's (Sevananda), coffee (Aurora), and pimento cheese burgers (The Vortex) to die for, all available within a few block radius, and in Atlanta that makes it one of the truest novelties of it all. Robert Mercurio, a founding member of Galactic is our guest this week. If you are not already familiar with them, Galactic is an acclaimed Funk/Soul band from New Orleans. They began as an instrumental band highly influenced by New Orleans groups such as The Meters, but now they incorporate lead vocals more often, and are lucky enough to have worked with New Orleans legends such as Allan Toussaint, Irma Thomas, and Walter "Wolfman" Washington. Joining them on this tour is vocalist Cyril Neville of the Neville Brothers. They came through Atlanta Friday night and we were lucky enough to get Robert to sit down with us at The Variety Playhouse to do a podcast. Enjoy! Included on this podcast are two songs from Galactic's new CD "Ya-Ka-May". The first song is "Heart Of Steel", and the second is "Dark Water". www.galacticfunk.com Please check out the Two Faces Radio Facebook page, and we also now have a Two Faces Radio Twitter Page!

The Clitheroe Kid was James Robertson Clitheroe, Jimmy Clitheroe to most, who by some strange coincidence did come from the town of that name without having to change his family name! At his full height he was 4ft 3in, and played the naughty schoolboy from 1958 to 1972. Although plausable from a distance, he was not really able to pass himself off as a youngster close up, so a TV career did not really take off too well, but at the peak of his fame the radio show was raking in about 10 million listeners, although by the end this had dropped to a tenth of that figure. Clitheroe was a very private person, and the shows became a sort of escape for him, as well as the release from the worries of his diminutive size, but despite this, his popularity increased and increased, making this series one of the longer running on the radio - a total of 17 series. It is surprising then that with such a success, and with such a long run that the shows are rarely broadcast. The humour was very obvious and probably wouldn't stand up in todays climes, but there has been one release from the BBC radio collection, so if you wanted to hear some of the shows, you can hunt this down in the shops. I would like to thank Tony Lang for the following information about the series. I do not have any of this series on tape myself, so if anyone has comments to make I would be most grateful. The scripts were generally written by James Casey and Frank Roscoe, with the shows production by James Casey. The series sprang from a single show broadcast on 24-4-56 as part of a Variety Playhouse series The pilot series did not have individual names for the episodes. The producer was Geoff Lawrence, with the music supplied by the BBC Northern Dance Orchestra, conducted by Alyn Ainsworth, and broadcast in the North of England only.

Each of the three "Stewarts" in this episode are of the rare lyrical variety. The Atlanta and Knoxville "Stewarts" could easily be confused as songs to the untrained listener. The Pearl Jam-tinged Birmingham "Stewart" is a nice treat for the children of the 90s in us all. The explanation of the title for Miss Tinkle's Overture gives us at least a little bit of insight into the band's song naming conventions (unconventional as they are). For those unfamiliar with the "Jimmy Stewart", be sure to check out this write-up.
