Episode 116 | Sheridan O'Donnell (filmmaker) returns to the podcast! In this episode, we discuss the exciting theatrical release of Sheridan's first feature film, Little Brother, and how retinitis pigmentosa leaves its fingerprints on his filmmaking. ------------------------- Gravitas Ventures is set to release LITTLE BROTHER in-theaters on September 17th, 2024. LITTLE BROTHER stars Daniel Diemer (UNDER THE BRIDGE), Phillip Ettinger (FIRST REFORMED), and Academy Award-winner J.K. Simmons (WHIPLASH) in the heartfelt and highly personal debut feature from the Korean-American writer, director, and low-vision disability advocate Sheridan O'Donnell. Following his friend's death by suicide, O'Donnell wrote the film in remembrance to "capture their warmth and humor, and to attempt to understand their mental health journey, all of which I hope deeply connects with viewers.” Scoring the Audience Award at the 2023 Atlanta Film Festival, LITTLE BROTHER begins after Pete (Ettinger) attempts suicide, pushing his overbearing father Warren (Simmons) to recruit his little brother Jake (Diemer) to drive Pete from Albuquerque to Seattle for a family intervention. The brothers aren't just oil and water; they're fire and gasoline—and they're both crammed inside a busted-up van for 1,400 miles with nowhere to hide. As they cross the American West, the two struggle to reconcile their past and forge a new bond. ------------------------- SEE-THROUGH is hosted by Lance Johnson. Based in New York City, Lance is a video editor living with a rare and incurable eye condition called retinitis pigmentosa (or RP for short). In most cases, RP causes legal-blindness by the age of 40. Now 34, Lance uses SEE-THROUGH as a platform to explore his inevitable future of blindness through his transparent conversations with his guests. ------------------------- SUPPORT SEE-THROUGH: Buy Merch: https://seethroughpod.com/merch ------------------------- GUEST LINKS: Little Brother Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wUf5utKS8g Sheridan Website: https://www.sheridanodonnell.com/ Sheridan Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sheridan.odonnell/ ------------------------- FOLLOW SEE-THROUGH: YouTube: https://bit.ly/3JRSPEO Instagram: https://instagram.com/seethroughpod TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@seethroughpod Twitter: https://twitter.com/seethroughpod Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/seethroughpod Website: https://www.seethroughpod.com/

Brian Newman is one of the more trenchant observers on the documentary scene. He's worn many hats in the industry: as an indie film producer, as the CEO of the Tribeca Film Institute, as a programmer for the Atlanta Film Festival, and much more. He currently leads a consultancy called Sub-Genre, doing content, strategy, development, distribution and marketing, for which he writes the Sub-Genre newsletter that a lot of media folks read. He has, as you'll hear in this conversation, some hope for the independent documentary world, even in the face of recent media consolidation, as we talk about how an ecosystem friendly to independent documentary once sprung up, and also how it might be sustained in the world of commercial media. More about Brian here.Note: In this episode, we mention that one of my favorite films of 2022, Reid Davenport's “I Didn't See You There,” is not streaming. Blair Bathory has been creating works of horror for many years. She began her career as maestro of the macabre when she was just 19-years-old. Beginning with a 3-minute short film entitled ‘First Date: A Modern Love Story', Blair wrote, directed, and produced the short film. Instantly gaining a large following after premiering the film online, she decided to follow her success with another film.Immediately following, Blair wrote another short horror film, but this time at longer length and more ambitious. Planning to create a full foam-latex creature suit she set out to raise the money for production through crowdfunding. After successfully garnering three-times what she asked for; Kitty, Kitty was shot and completed in 2014. It was invited to many film festivals around the world and eventually released online in 2016.In the process of creating her own horror stories, Blair quickly realized the lack of platforms that short form filmmakers had to showcase their work. Furthermore, she felt the need for a centralized location for the massive amounts of short horror films in existence. With her love for anthology shows like ‘The Twilight Zone', ‘Tales from the Crypt', and ‘Goosebumps' she saw an opportunity to combine the two mediums. From her years of working within the genre and meeting so many talented filmmakers, Blair had an arsenal of films to choose from.In May of 2015, Blair Bathory rose from the grave and lit the candles inside FEAR HAUS. Once a week The Lady of the Haus introduces her Victims to one new short horror film. Showcasing independent directors from all over the world, an audience quickly grew. Since its conception, Blair has been invited to host a night of horror films at The Rome International Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, Frightfest and many others around the world. Also, in 2017 Blair took the position of Festival Director at The Spooky Empire Film Festival - running that for the next three years.Spooky Empire, one of the nations largest genre conventions, was a massive success and gave Blair yet another opportunity to see the best of the best in independent horror cinema first. FEAR HAUS helmed by Blair has done brand activations now at DreamHack, the world's largest streaming convention, and a tour with across the East Coast sponsored by several liquor companies.Currently, she is the new host for the widely successful podcast Something Scary, which boasts over 3 million fans.Blair's personal social media platforms are highly popular and she reaches over 250,000 fans.YouTube TikTok Instagram
The Atlanta Film Festival for 2023 has come to a close. In this episode, I discuss the experience of the festival, some of my favorite films of the fest, and share my interviews with George R.R. Martin and Vincent D'Onofrio on the red carpet for "Night of the Cooters." I hope you enjoy!
One of my favorite films of the 2023 Atlanta Film Festival was the meditative sci-fi film, "Red Earth". On the night of its premiere, I had the chance to discuss it with director Georg Koszulinski, cinematographer Kate E. Hinshaw and producer Tiffany Albright, and it was great to discuss this complex film with them.
Travel expert Rick Steves joins us for this month's edition of “ATL Up and Away.” Plus, our series, “Speaking of Comedy,” shines a light on Atlanta comic Damon Sumner. Then, we hit the red carpet for a visit with George R.R. One of the great things about the interviews I did at the 2023 Atlanta Film Festival was that they feel more like conversations than just basic Q&As. This one, with Georgia filmmaker Brian Lonano, is no different. In addition to his short film, "Content: The Lo-Fi Man," we discuss content vs. film, inspiration, film scores and the value of film festival. I hope you enjoy!
One of my early favorites from the 2023 Atlanta Film Festival came from watch Geoff Marslett's "Quantum Cowboys" ahead of the festival. As a result, I was able to set up some time prior to the film's screening at the festival to talk with the director and one of his producers, Melodie Sisk, about the film, and it was a great, expansive discussion. I hope you enjoy!Continuing with the Western motif, the piece that plays at the end is my own "At Peace Under the Stars" (Reprise) from my 2007 album, "Sonic Visions of a New Old West".

The number of film festivals has exploded in the past 10 years. More than 2,000 are staged around the world, dedicated to women directors, Japanese film, hip-hop and countless other themes. As testament to that intense festival growth, this year the 46-year-old Atlanta Film Festival (ATLFF) received 10,000 entries. Following a hybrid model, this year's Atlanta Film Festival will return to indoor screenings at the Plaza Theatre and Dad's Garage, and also feature special outdoor screenings at the Carter Center and the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Viewers can choose to see films virtually or in-person, or a combination of both. On this week's podcast, Felicia Feaster will bring us her conversation with the directors of one of the fest's films, “Refuge,” which is set in Clarkston. Learn more about your ad choices.
