Many students feel overwhelmed with homework, and it's taking a toll on their mental health. It's the million billion dollar question. How did we get to a point where some teens are so hyper-competitive that giving them a “B” on a paper or quiz is like giving them an “F”? Why do some teens now overload themselves with advanced placement courses and extracurriculars, just to stay up past midnight cramming in homework? Dr. Cathy Vatterott is an education professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and she's been researching and writing about homework for more than 20 years. She believes much of our teens' excessive workloads and goals of “perfectionism” is caused by a desire to get into Ivy League Universities. “We as a culture, especially in highly- affluent communities, have bought into an idea that if you don't get into one of these ten colleges, you're going to be a failure, says Vatterott. “They've made this an incredibly high-stakes game for kids.” What should teens be doing? Vatterott, who published “The Teens are not Alright,” says teens should be – Experience learning as joyful and exciting. – Read for pleasure. – Play a game where winning doesn't matter. – Figure out who they are and what they value. – Fall in love, not with a person, but with a passion. – Discover not what the world can do for them, but what they can do for the world. – Reflect, wonder, and dream. What can schools do to help? Vatterott helps coach educators on what they can do to help teens strike a balance, and she says changing up homework assignments can have a considerable impact. While she is not a proponent of eliminating homework entirely, she does believe schools should reduce homework and make sure that what's going home is meaningful. “We don't prepare kids to do five hours of homework in college by giving them five hours of homework in high school. The way we prepare kids is to teach them the skills that we need to actually be able to handle the work,” says Vatterott. “It's not about time. Time is not the metric.” She also suggests that schools should coordinate the workload across classes and switch to a modified block schedule with fewer but longer classes each day. In Don't @ Me (1:54), Tom opens with an assertion that educators should seek "second opinions" about the degree to which students have met learning goals. Then, Tom is joined by author, speaker, and expert Dr. Cathy Vatterott (15:23) for a discussion about homework and the larger issue of student stress and anxiety. Finally, in Assessment Corner (52:59), Tom focuses on peer assessment and the many iterations and potential outcomes of this powerful, yet often under-utilized practice. The two tackle such over asked podcast questions as "How did you get into stand up?", and "When did you know you were funny?" and "Is there an inherent truth that some aspect of honesty or realness must be bled into absolute absurdity in order for the ridiculous to be any sort of place of abstract substance?"

The first live show where we're feeling out a new style and experimenting a bit, and I call this one FUN and a SUCCESS. With one of my favorite stand-ups Nick Vatterott (Comedy Central Half Hour, Conan, etc.) as the first guest co-host, how could it not be fun? We were joined by former Daily Show correspondent and delightful stand-up Wyatt Cenac, xoJane Deputy Editor Mandy Stadtmiller and wonderful musical guest Xenia Rubinos for a free-ranging discussion of our guests' childhoods that covered: Ghostly Aunt Jemima, a Care Bear massacre, a lesson on re-insurance, growing up with Brian K. Vaughan, Chinese Santa Claus, Scott Peterson's water people defense, and fleeing communist Cuba. Plus, in the epilogue, I talk to adultswim.com writer Kelly Hudson about what it was like growing up in Texas.Check out our new website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes and see some live dates: the next live episode will be August 6th with Jim Norton, Bonnie McFarlane, Eric Drysdale (Colbert Report) and musical guest ARMS, and on Aug. 31st we'll be live at the Out of Bounds Festival in Austin with director Todd Rohal and more!
Check out Comedian Nick Vatterott as we talk about all sorts of interesting topics and some comedy too....
Wowzers! On Tuesday, July 10th we hosted another patented™ Beginnings: Live at UCB East, and what a doozy it was! We had Dapwell, hypeman for the hip hop group Das Racist as well as Das Racist labelmate Lakutis. Nick Vatterott, a stand-up who's been on Conan and Jimmy Fallon (as well as his own Comedy Central Half Hour) joined us as well, but that's not all! Ali Wong - from Chelsea Lately, The Tonight Show, Are You There, Chelsea? and the new Oliver Stone film Savages - told some fantastic stories about childhood painting and figure skating. The show was weird, odd and delightful! Join us!
As a stand-up, improviser and sketch writer, comedian Nick Vatterott is a triple threat. And a triple treat! His stand-up has been featured on Jimmy Fallon and in the Montreal Just for Laughs Festival. He's understudied for Second City, and his sketch group HEAVYWEIGHT (including Cloverfield's TJ Miller) has performed all around the country. Nick's also performed his one man show No Outlet at the iO Theater, the Chicago Sketchfest and the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. A few weeks ago, Nick came over to the Wrestling Team apartment to discuss acting out in class, Jesuits, “Crimson and Clover”, missing milk jugs, pillows as mnemonic devices, boat tours, Sliding Doors, getting out of Chicago, and all-you-can-eat sushi. Plus, we debut our new segment “Creative Rituals”!
Chris and Danny start the show off by talking about how Chris has spent the past week in the Catskills at a family owned bungalow with the ‘fake Iaconos.’ There he put up sheetrock and did other manual labor, but do not worry he also shot some guns. Danny spoke briefly about the quarrel he had earlier in the week with Warren. It was proposed that if Warren is up to it they will reconcile and talk through their differences during a show. The 1st guest of the day was Nick Vatterott. He spoke briefly about his one-man show, “No Outlet” yet the conversation moved quickly to racist rapists. In walks Yamaneika Saunders the female co-host of this episode....on black people time. We learn very quickly that she’s extremely spiritual which will be repetitively brought up throughout the show. Faryn Einhorn is our 2nd guest who is a member of the Harvard Sailing Team. Faryn makes quite clear that their sketch group is not from Harvard nor do they sail. Faryn and Yamaneika hit it off well; Danny suggests that they shoot a comedy buddy film about the two of them going to a burger place. Next Adam Newman joins the show where the talk immediately jumps to his puns and clear tweets to celebrities...that go unanswered. Yamaneika loves to suck on onions and thinks Adam is ‘delicious.’ The last guest of the day is Andy de la Tour. His English accent practically swoons Yamaneika because of her love of the movie Mary Poppins. He tells a story of how Robin Williams stole his thunder at a comedy club in the UK many moons ago.
