Sales Game Changers | Tip-Filled Conversations with Sales Leaders About Their Successful Careers
This is episode 491. Tips for Sales Career Success. Read the complete transcription on the Sales Game Changers Podcast website. BOB'S TIP: "Cling to, “Yes and.” There's an oversimplification that the majority of people use for ‘yes and' that it's an ideation tool only. At its core, it's a communication tool because you cannot ‘yes and' somebody without listening to them, without understanding them. And' is the bridge to your voice. This provides this opportunity to build bridges. ‘Yes and' links to that postponement of judgment. ‘Yes and' is a fantastic conflict management technique. Imagine some difficult questions being thrown your way or pushback that you're receiving. A way to deal with both of those is through ‘yes and.'
Bob Kulhan is the Founder, President, and CEO of Business Improvisations, an interactive learning program that uses the tenants of improvisations to enhance all levels of a business. Over the past two years, I’ve been doing research on the topic of improvisational leadership. In the book “Getting to Yes And” by Bob Kulhan, he discusses that effective leaders can answer four questions about themselves: Why this? Why now? What do I have to do? What’s in it for me? Bob discusses these questions as if he was to bring the tenets of improvisation into his firm. So why should you consider bringing improv into your organization? Let’s discuss that now. He was a member of Chicago’s famed Second City acting group and has performed in the iO and Annoyance Theaters, as well as the PIT in New York City. In our interview, Bob explains his technique of, Yes, And, explained in his book, “Getting To YES And-The Art of Business Improv.” The phrase, Yes, and, is the cornerstone of improvisation. For example, in a sales conversation, rather than being satisfied with a No answer, or an objection to your presentation, simply respond with, Yes, And --- what can we do to make our product work for you? Always keep the client engaged and let them tell you what they need and explain how you can fill that need.Tune in to learn how you can use improvisation to improve your communications. https://soartosuccess.eliteexpertsnetwork.com

As an L&D or business leader, does improv immediately jump to mind as a solution to a number of the human challenges we’re facing amidst the coronavirus pandemic? I wouldn’t be surprised if many answered no to that question. However, I’d advocate it should be. Amidst the ever-growing, gloomy news about the coronavirus and the negative impact it’s having on the world around us, this conversation is a breath of fresh air that’s focused on solutions instead of problems. In this episode we talk with Bob Kulhan about how he has focused his experience and team at Business Improv to harness the power of improv and translate it into a solution that solves real business problems. He’ll also share more about how their latest solution that is not only preparing people to operate in a virtual and distributed world but creates an opportunity for people to see how to do it in practice. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/learningtechtalks/support

Stand up in front of a group. No script. No prep. No rules. This is improv in a way. Its not quite as scary as that, even though that set-up is likely to send many an introvert running in the opposite direction. And in fact, what looks like a completely spontaneous improv situation actually DOES have rules, and there are ways to prepare yourself. Sure, theres no script, but life doesnt have a script, so who needs one? Ive spoken several times over the years about the power of improv and how it can be a transformative tool for introverts. In this episode, I talk to one of the first people to put the principles of improv together with the world of business. Bob Kulhan is an Adjunct Professor of Business Administration for The Fuqua School of Business, Duke University as well as an Adjunct Professor of Business for Columbia Business School, Columbia University. He also is the CEO of Business Improvisations. BI is a world-class leader in developing experiential learning programs for businesses. Bob and I start by defining improv (it might not be what you think!), then talk about how it has grown to be an exciting alternative to traditional professional development offerings. He also offers some basic improv principles you can use to make networking more enjoyable, as well as tips for getting yourself off the mental hamster wheel.
