How does a single sensor help change your outlook on a planet? A single small seismometer on Mars can help understand Mars' past, present and future. What do an ultrasound and Mars have in common? Both can use a single sensor to peer deep inside. Listening to the echoes of marsquakes helps researchers understand what's in Mars' core. Modelling the inside of Mars' core helps researchers understand its past and future. Mars is often thought to be volcanically dead, but there are signs of some activity. Comedian Sheng Wang has spent much of his comedy career trying to hide in plain sight. Now, thanks to a boost from his longtime friend and colleague Ali Wong, he is reluctantly stepping into the spotlight. In this episode, Wang opens up about everything that led to his first hour-long stand-up special ‘Sweet and Juicy,' which premiered on Netflix earlier this month and also marks Wong's directorial debut. He breaks down how seeing the late, great Mitch Hedberg perform forever changed the way he thought about comedy and tells stories about getting judged by Norm Macdonald on ‘Last Comic Standing,' channeling his own childhood as a writer on ‘Fresh Off the Boat,' the origins of his most famous bit about ripe avocados and more. Sweet & Juicy. That's the name of comedian Sheng Wang's first ever hour long Netflix special and we're here for it. We hadn't talked with Sheng since 2017 and we needed a catch-up. 2017 Sheng was writing for the ABC television series Fresh Off the Boat and doing stand up. 2022 Sheng has a Netflix special directed by Ali Wong, loves Costco, knows a lot about Jalapeno peppers and Hatch chili's, is an avid botanical garden visitor, and just uses regular brand shampoo and conditioner on his lovely long locks. It was a joy to catch up with our old friend Sheng and support his journey in the comedy scene. I convinced Kari Assad (IG: @assadkarirocks, Twt: @kariassad) to watch this little-known movie about standup, This Is My Life (1992). The movie is directed by Nora Ephron and stars Julie Kavner as standup comic Dottie Ingels. It's a weird little time capsule of 90s notions of what a standup career is like for working moms. We didn't hate it! Kari also talks about her standup show, This is Different. I love this show because it has amazing lineups, outdoor setup and cheap tickets. Our guest this week is comedian Sheng Wang. You may have seen his Comedy Central special or in your local metropolitan comedy club. Look. Don't get too hangry, 'cause this week Sheng Wang (Totally Biased, Late Night) is in the guest star chair to discuss the pros of NOT decorating your apartment with Sharon. We also learn about when Sheng was elected Historian of his high school China Club, as well as his unreleased comedy album. Sheng and Sharon discover a mutual love of hot things, and we finish up by finding out just what "dippin' dirty" really is.
Sheng Wang came to my apartment to talk about the Asian American experience. Well, he came over to do a podcast, and then I asked him all about Chinatown, and then it just becomes a whole podcast about Asianness.
It’s the triumphant return of Joe Machi. Machi talks about tearing up the dance floor on his birthday night, his irritation toward secret menus at restaurants, and forcing Sam to drink even though he wanted a night off! Taiwanese Texan comic Sheng Wang "takes the bike lane" over to "the studio" with a houndstooth folder of humiliation; from attempting to entertain college students on the night of the Vice Presidential debate, to performing for old white people in a "barn-like" structure, to not being quite sure he actually did contractually obligated stand-up on a debauched pot-brownie enabled cruise. Sheng also divulges how he's "turning over a new leaf" and lightening up on his hard partying ways. Lots of sex on the open ocean in this week's WORST GIG EVER!
