Welcome back to part six of our podcast series on high-impact strategies for struggling readers in Years 3 to 6. Today, we delve into the power of reading aloud, a topic that Mem Fox has passionately explored. Let's reiterate the value of making read-aloud sessions a daily, intentional practice.Once you establish a routine of read-alouds, students will look forward to it and demand it. This excitement is fuelled by selecting texts that not only captivate their interests but also expand their horizons. Instead of choosing books that mirror their everyday experiences, consider texts that introduce them to new ideas and genres, fostering curiosity and broadening their understanding of the world.Chapter books are particularly important for students in Years 3 to 6. They help children develop the skills to engage with longer texts, sustain their interest, and think deeply. Australian authors like Emily Rodda, with series like Rowan of Rin and Deltora Quest, offer rich, immersive stories that are perfect for read-aloud sessions. Similarly, Katrina Nannestad's "We Are Wolves" and Catherine Applegate's verse narrative "Odder" provide diverse literary experiences. The key is to read books you've personally enjoyed and found successful with students. When choosing a book, consider the unique dynamics and interests of your class. Ensure that read-aloud sessions are inclusive, especially for struggling readers, who should not miss out on this enriching experience. These sessions allow all students to be part of the "literacy club," engaging in discussions and building their vocabulary and comprehension skills.Balancing enjoyment with instructional opportunities is crucial. Focus primarily on the enjoyment of the story, but don't shy away from teaching moments. For example, if you notice your students struggling with punctuation, you can briefly highlight how it's used during a read-aloud session without disrupting the flow of the story. This can be revisited and reinforced during dedicated mini-lessons in your reading workshop.Reading aloud is one of the most effective, low-input strategies we have. It doesn't require special materials, just a fluent reader and a collection of thoughtfully chosen books. It's a practice that supports all readers, enhancing vocabulary, comprehension, and overall literacy skills. By making it a daily practice, we provide every child with the opportunity to grow as a reader and thinker. In conclusion, read-aloud sessions are more than just a classroom activity; they are a powerful tool for building a community of readers. They offer shared experiences that foster discussions, wonder, and discovery. So, let's commit to making read-aloud a high-impact, daily part of our teaching strategy, ensuring that every child benefits from the magic of a well-told story.BOOKS, in the order mentioned in the podcast:Rodda, E. One Weka Went Walking by Kate Preece and Pippa Ensor. Beautiful hardback picture book about a weka which goes for a walk on the Chatham Islands and meets some of New Zealand's most endangered birds along the way, from the tiny black robin to the world's rarest seabirds. Stunning illustrations and great rhyme. A gift for any age. I will have a copy with me this morning to show Francesca. Bedtime Blast Off! By Mark Sommerset. Third book in the series by Mark about Little Baa Baa and Quirky Turkey – hardcover picture book with themes that kids will love. The previous books are Baa Baa Smart Sheep and I Love Lemonade. Jason Mason and the World's Most Powerful Itching Powder by Jason and Andrew Gunn. About Jason Mason, an average kid who is also a Secret Agent for the New Zealand government and has all sorts of wacky adventures. Great story, and very well presented with line illustrations and lots of visual tricks to make reading the book a very entertaining experience for a young reader. I believe it's the first in a planned series of eight books. Waiting for the Storks by Katrina Nannestad. This is a book for older readers, 12+. It's the third historical novel set during WW2 which she's done and I've loved them all. The others are We Are Wolves and Rabbit, Soldier, Angel, Thief. This new one is about the Nazi's Lebensborn programme where Polish children who fitted the Nazi Aryan ideal were essentially stolen and taken to Germany where they were adopted into German families with the eventual aim of improving German stock and destroying Poland. These three books are all lovely hardcovers. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K.Rowling, Jim Kay and Neil Packer. This is the biggest of the Harry Potter stories and therefore took a long time to illustrate – the job proved too big for Jim Kay on his own – he did the previous four illustrated versions – so Neil Packer helped out with it. It's a big book, beautifully presented, gorgeous hardcover. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Katrina Nannestad is an award-winning children's author based in regional Victoria whose works include "The Girl Who Brought Mischief", "The Girl, The Dog and The Writer" series, "The Olive of Grove" series, the "Red Dirt" series and more. Her latest book, "We Are Wolves" was released at the end of October 2020 by HarperCollins. A remarkable, utterly exquisite read that had me laughing and crying as I followed the Wolf children on their journey of survival at the end of WWII.Aimed at primary school readers, but equally readable by older children as well as adults, this is a book that sensitively and beautifully explores the devastation of war on families and children in particular.
Today on Middle Grade Mavens, Julie chats with Rebecca Lim, about her new release, "Tiger Daughter," on February 2, by Allen and Unwin. And Pamela Chat's to Katrina Nannestad, about her recently released, "We Are Wolves,' on October 2020. About Rebecca's book: Tiger Daughter Wen Zhou is determined to create a future for herself that is more satisfying than the life her parents expect her to lead. Equal parts heartbreaking and hopeful, Tiger Daughter is a wonderfully compelling and authentic Own Voices novel about growing up Asian in Australia. What I feel most days is that nothing is ever going to change. That my life won't even start, and that I'll be stuck like this forever. Wen Zhou is the daughter and only child of Chinese immigrants whose move to the lucky country has proven to be not so lucky. Wen and her friend, Henry Xiao - whose mum and dad are also struggling immigrants - both dream of escape from their unhappy circumstances, and form a plan to sit an entrance exam to a selective high school far from home. But when tragedy strikes, it will take all of Wen's resilience and resourcefulness to get herself and Henry through the storm that follows. ISBN: 9781760877644 Publisher: Allen and Unwin Publication Date: February 2021 Page Extent: 224 Format: Paperback - B format Age: 11 - 14 Author Interview: Katrina Nannestad About Katrina's book: We Are Wolves Sometimes it's good to be wild. When the Russian Army marches into East Prussia at the end of the war, the Wolf family must flee. Liesl, Otto and their baby sister Mia find themselves lost and alone, in a blizzard, in the middle of a war zone. Liesl has promised Mama that she will keep her brother and sister safe. But sometimes, to survive, you have to do bad things. Dangerous things. Wild things. Sometimes to survive, you must become a wolf.
