Then they discuss Pascal Lougier's Martyrs, a real French movie meant to make you feel uncomfortable. Let us be absolutely clear: Eric watched Martyrs so you don't have to. He has born witness. You're welcome. The French Dispatch talk begins immediately, Martyrs begins at 40:00. Léa Seydoux had an enviable and prolific 2021 with standout turns in Cary Fukunaga's No Time to Die, Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch, Ildikó Enyedi's The Story of My Wife, Bruno Dumont's France, and Arnaud Desplechin's Deception. At this year's Cannes, she continued her streak with starring roles in two excellent, very different movies: One Fine Morning by Mia Hansen-Løve, where Seydoux plays a young mother grieving the cognitive decline of her father; and Crimes of the Future by David Cronenberg, where the actress is a dystopian performance artist alongside Viggo Mortensen. For our latest podcast, Film Comment Co-Deputy Editor Devika Girish sat down with Seydoux for a windswept conversation on a rooftop on the Croisette (with a surprise cameo by Viggo Mortensen!). Seydoux discussed her experiences working with Hansen-Løve and Cronenberg, the intricacies of being an object versus a subject as an actor, her thoughts on beauty in cinema, and more.

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are back in 2022 and taking stock of the recent losses, new trailers, ongoing controversies, and this week are reminiscing about two solid action thrillers from the 2010s, "Non-Stop" and "Source Code," to combine into a new pitch. Available on Apple and Spotify Episode 334 includes: -R.I.P. Betty White, Sidney Poitier, Bob Saget -Does Marvel's Moon Knight look like 1997's Spawn? -Joss Whedon just can't help but dig that grave a little deeper. -Nate runs through several Oscar-contending indie movies, "Parallel Mothers," "The Novice," "Passing," and "The Hand of God." -Ben's loathing of Wes Anderson's "The French Dispatch" is everything you come for. -Switch the Pitch -- "Non-Stop" / "Source Code" -The guys discuss two elevated action thriller,s the first about a terrorist on a plane (Non-Stop) and the second about a terrorist on a train (Source Code), and then combine them into an original pitch for a man who claims to be a time traveler trying to thwart a hijacking.
Wes Anderson's "The French Dispatch" was meant to premiere at last year's Cannes Film Festival but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It finally premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival, then made its way to the Telluride and New York Film Festivals before coming to theaters, and is now available to watch at home on digital and Blu Ray. The film is a visual feast which isn't surprising considering cinematographer Robert Yeoman has been Anderson's secret weapon in his filmography going back to "Bottle Rocket" in 1996. Yeoman was previously nominated for an Oscar for his previous collaboration with Anderson on "The Grand Budapest Hotel," and their latest offering might even be better! Yeoman was kind enough to take time out of shooting their upcoming film "Asteroid City" to talk about his work on the film, working in black-and-white, his friendship with Anderson, and much more! We hope you enjoy this look into one of the most visually splendid-looking films of the year. Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... It was not the best time for our two Packers fans to watch this particular film.End Credits: Please make sure to Like, Follow, and Subscribe to Live Breathe Film!

Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch is a love letter to classic French cinema and The New Yorker magazine. Like all of his films, it's highly stylized — this one adopts the format of a magazine. It's an anthology of sorts, featuring three different main stories. The film's actors Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Benicio del Toro, Timothée Chalamet, and Jeffrey Wright.

October is shaping up to be a busy month at your local multiplex. For us at Movies Last Night our most anticipated release's of the year will finally come out. Denis Villenevue's take on the sci fi classic Dune finally hits screens, Edgar Wright's Last Night In Soho drops and Indie auteur Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch will round out 2021's hottest month for cinema nerds. All three of these movies were shelved from their original 2020 release dates and thrust forward into a still evolving and unsteady market place over one year later. And depending on where you live, it's probably a bigger gamble to see them on the big screen now than it ever was. Eric and I are fans first and foremost. So when three of our favorite directors have movies releasing in the space of seven days it feels like Christmas is coming early for Movies Last Night. So that got us thinking… it's looking pretty slow for the next few weeks, and whilst we sit at home waiting for this summer to finally end now seems like as good a time as ever to launch a mini series looking back at a directors career up to now and how they've shaped our love of their art. Stylistically Wright, Villenueve and Anderson could not be further apart, but they all share a very strong back catalog of work that many could argue is spotless. So please join us in conversation as we recount the first time we crossed paths with these filmmakers, our favorite entries in their illustrious catalogs, hot takes, clashing opinions and hopefully we can convince some of you to check out a blindspot in your back catalogs along the way. Once again, thanks for listening, please enjoy the show. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/movieslastnight/message
The coming fall movie season is less a slate of titles than it is a promise fulfilled, with loads of big films coming to the big screen, some of which have been delayed for a year or more: “No Time To Die,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” Denis Villeneuve's “Dune,” and Wes Anderson's “The French Dispatch” to name just a few. For their FALL MOVIE PREVIEW, Adam and Josh have questions about some of those long-anticipated titles, along with queries about some of the season's more obscure offerings, including films starring Idris Elba and Regina King; Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield; and Tom Hanks and a dog (and a robot). Plus Josh has reviews of the new CANDYMAN and SHANG-CHI AND THE TEN RINGS. 0:00 - Billboard 1:11 - Fall Movie Preview George Lam, "Mr. Strong Man" 25:51 - Josh: "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," "Candyman" 37:32 - Next Week / Notes 47:00 - Polls 54:17 - Fall Movie Preview, cont. 1:10:28 - Outro Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. By happenstance, we still have some of the biggest titles at Cannes to discuss, and I couldn't be happier to talk about them with the critic Mark Asch, a longtime colleague who I've worked with as both an editor and a writer over the past decade and change. Mark brings a lot of goodies to the program, including Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch; Sean Baker's Red Rocket; Titane, the sophomore feature from Julia Ducournau, who directed Raw; and a couple of picks that haven't been screaming from the Cannes headlines. Plus: JFK Revisited, which Oliver Stone teased on this very podcast about a month ago.
