Dennis is joined via Zoom by actor Emerson Collins who is currently starring in the one-man play Buyer and Cellar by Jonathan Tolins at the Whitefire Theatre in Los Angeles. The play is a "What if?" story about an underemployed actor who gets a job working in the mall in Barbra Streisand's basement. Emerson talks about what drew him to the play, shares his favorite moment in the show and recalls his harrowing first audition, which happened days after he had emergency appendix surgery. He also talks about working as a producer for writer-director Del Shores (Sordid Lives), getting discovered by Del in a Dallas production of Del's play Southern Baptist Sissies, then taking a leap of faith and moving to LA to appear in the LA production. Other topics include: whether famous people can have real friendships with non-famous people, Emerson's memories of the late, great Leslie Jordan, the shooting permit disaster that almost shut down the film of Southern Baptist Sissies, working retail aa a Banana Republic display visionary, driving for Lyft when he found out he got cast in Rent: Live for Fox TV, why he posts Speedo shots on Instagram and the curvacious and hard-to-read title font Barbra picked for the book that inspired Buyer and Cellar, My Passion For Design. www.emersoncollins.com

Playwright Howard Skora stopped by Playwright's Spotlight, and what a fascinating interview he delivered. What I thought would be another insightful look into the craft of playwriting, turned into an unsuspecting history lesson about the psychologist Sigmund Freud and quite a few unknown stories about his life. Not only does Howie educate me about the all things Freud, we delve into the stakes in comedy and playing against opposites, taking creative license with historical characters and stories, the research that goes into said people and events and what gets sifted out, and whether or not he writes prior, during or post research as well as the need to collaborate. In addition, we touch on writing for specific actors, stage directions requiring specificity, the pros of self-producing, rewriting during rehearsals, and the struggles and success and starting in standup when it comes to playwriting. It's definitely an episode for the books, and I look forward to catching a performance of Freud on Cocaine. Howard Skora is a Los Angeles based playwright whose play Damaged Furniture had a 6 month sold-out run in Los Angeles that garnered him a Best Play and Best Writer nominations for the 2019 Valley Theater Awards. His first play, Miserable with an Ocean View ran for 5 sold-out months and was the top-rated original comedy in Los Angeles on Bitter Lemons for its entire run with a 94% sweet rating. His most recent play Freud on Cocaine will premiere at the Whitefire Theatre in Sherman Oaks, CA September 8th, 2023.To view the video format of this episode, visit the link below -https://youtu.be/lFdmcz_VyCYLinks to sites and resources mentioned in this episode - The Diane Thomas Award -https://www.networkisa.org/contest/view/ucla-diane-thomas-awardThe Actor's Gym -https://www.theactorsgymny.org/teamThe Whitefire Theatre -https://www.whitefiretheatre.comHollywood Fringe -https://www.hollywoodfringe.orgLucy Pollack PR -https://www.lucypr.comDunning-Kruger Effect -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning–Kruger_effectTickets for Freud on Cocaine -www.freudoncocaine.comContact information and socials for Howard Skora -www.howardskora.comTwitter - @howardskoraIG - @howardskoraWebsites and socials for James Elden, Punk Monkey Productions and Playwright's SpotlightPunk Monkey Productions - www.punkmonkeyproductions.comPLAY Noir -www.playnoir.comPLAY Noir Anthology –www.punkmonkeyproductions.com/contact.htmlJames Elden -Twitter - @jameseldensauerIG - @alakardrakeFB - fb.com/jameseldensauerPunk Monkey Productions and PLAY Noir - Twitter - @punkmonkeyprods - @playnoirla IG - @punkmonkeyprods - @playnoir_la FB - fb.com/playnoir - fb.com/punkmonkeyproductionsPlaywright's Spotlight -Twitter - @wrightlightpod IG - @playwrights_spotlightPlaywriting services through Los Angeles Collegiate Playwrights Festivalwww.losangelescollegiateplaywrightsfestival.com/services.htmlSupport the show

What is postpartum depression really like? What does it feel to be a mother that's really in the trenches with depression? An honest, hilarious and insightful conversation with comedian and 'accidental activist', Angelina Spicer.Strap in kids, this is a good one.Her movement and also the title of her documentary, "The Push For Permission" is not only a love letters to all mamas, but a call to action to raise awareness to PPD and hopefully shed the stigma it brings.----------------------ABOUT ANGELINA:Comedian, Creator and “Me-Time” enthusiast Angelina Spicer has built an impressive online presence with her viral comedy sketches. It began as she portrayed Tyra Banks, Beyonce and Nicki Minaj on the Disney web-series Electric Spoofaloo. Her viral success catapulted her career from phone screens to the silver screen, when she appeared in several episodes of hit talk show THE REAL, as well as playing a crazy mix of characters on JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE, and CONAN. Many of her sidesplitting skits have been featured on Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Funny Or Die, WorldStar Hip Hop, Essence magazine, and have been tweeted by countless celebrities including Shonda Rhimes, Taraji P. Henson and Taylor Swift.Angelina became an outspoken advocate for maternal mental health, when she was released from a psychiatric hospital for treatment of Postpartum Depression. It was then that her journey to remove the stigma from the shame from PPD began. The documentary film she is developing 'The Push for Permission' will address her twelve month struggle with postpartum depression. Much like her live standup comedy shows, the film is slated to hilariously depict Spicer’s awkward transition into motherhood, her ridiculous race to return to work, complete denial of her postpartum struggles, her acceptance, recovery and triumphs over the illness.-------------------GUEST LINKS:INSTAGRAM: @angelinaspicerTWITTER: @angelinaspicerTIK TOK: @funnyangelinaspicerDONATE TO DOCUMENTARY: Push for Permission DocFOLLOW ‘Push for Permission’ Movement & Doc: The Push for Permission on IG--------------------Please Subscribe to That One (Blank) Friend on Apple Podcasts & Spotify and follow us on on Social MediaHOST: @saudiarashedSHOW: @thatoneblankfriendWEBSITE: SaudiaRashed.comTickets for my solo show are here for 'Release and Let Go: A Journey of Solo Artists' show streaming live November 7th at the Whitefire Theatre.

We sat down with actor/dancer/writer/performer Megan Rippey as she was in the process of moving her solo show Deer Woman from the showcase stage of The Whitefire Theatre to The Fringe Festival circuit. Having gotten the nuts-n-bolts perspective of directing the show from Valerie Hager, we were thrilled for the chance to find out how the play was written and, of course, which parts were true, which were lensed truth and which were fabricated. The story of the origins of Deer Woman turns out to be one that spans her entire life (up until now at least). Along the way, we get into her work as an exotic dancer, her time as a student earning her MFA and the ingredients that had to come together to make Deer Woman possible.
