How did we feel about Otis and Maeve / Otis and Ruby? Do we still root for the Groff's as they continue to find themselves following the stellar writing of season 3? Do we feel every character had their best pay off and found their place in the sun (no, they didn't! But which ones do we think got burned by a rushed season?). As usual, Alex & Dan share some of their own adolescent stories of woe and worry - if you'd like to share some of yours, the more the merrier - contact details below! Best known for his work on ABC-TV's daytime drama, All My Children for over 30 years – 15 of those years as a director – Michael Pomarico has been a loyal David Cassidy fan since 1970. In this episode, Michael reflects on his own career, David's acting career on television and the stage, relives David's 1972 Madison Square Garden concert, offers an analysis of David's songs and the respect he had from his peers. Michael speaks movingly about seeing David in concert at the Garden State Arts Centre, Madison Square Garden and being present at his final show in New York 45 years later. Michael was nominated 18 times for daytime Emmy Awards, winning six times, and we talk about how he would, if given the chance, directed The Partridge Family. He began his career at ABC-TV in Master Control at the ABC Broadcast Center in New York directly from College. Michael moved on to work as a Technical Director – doing ABC sports integrations and worked with Howard Cosell on his Saturday Afternoon magazine show Sportsbeat. He was technical director for Howard's interview with boxing legend, Gerry Cooney. In 1983 he became a full time Technical Director on All My Children, moving into directing in 1996. He directed All My Children in New York, Los Angeles, and then went on to direct the Web version of “All My Children” for Prospect Park (production company) in Connecticut in 2013 after the cancellation of the Network series. Michael has worked with many outstanding actors and musicians from the worlds of Daytime TV, Primetime, and Pop Music. These include musicians: The Young Rascals, The O'Jays, Johnny Maestro and The Brooklyn Bridge; actors such as Susan Lucci, Carol Burnett, Kelly Ripa, Mark Consuelos, David Canary, Cameron Matheson, Sara Michelle Gellar, Lee Meriweather, Stevie Wonder, Josh Duhmal, Eva LaRue, Abigail Spencer, James Mitchell, JR Martinez, Amanda Seyfreid, Michael B. Jordan. Early in 2016, Michael assisted with the live theatrical production of a one-woman show – Tammy Faye Tweets produced by and starring Charlene Tilton (Lucy Ewing, 1980's Original Dallas TV show) in Los Angeles, California at the Whitefire Theatre. In the Fall of 2016 Michael directed Season 2 of the web based, Pride: The Series on Amazon Prime. His most ambitious project was for charity – a Historical Talk Show (Town Hall) for Holmdel, New Jersey, his hometown. The show was recorded in front of a live audience. The 3-hour program hosted by one of the High School's prominent teachers included interviews and clips telling the story of the High School's beginning by the men and women who created it. Michael produced, directed, edited, and authored the program on DVD as a fundraiser for the school's football field refurbishment. This program went on to win two Telly Awards in the Directing Category and the Editing Category. Currently Michael is part of the creative team of two Drama/Comedy programs that are in development and are being prepped for presentation to various streaming platforms. Michael enjoys spending time at the Jersey Shore with his wife and two children, visiting friends around the country, and attending concerts with his family and friends. Michael shared more personal memories of his career and role David has had in his life and that of his family, in my book, Cherish David Cassidy – A Legacy of Love available from Amazon and leading bookstores.

We then go into the realistic chance of what the Primetime Emmy telecast might actually look like with the Television Academy already canceling the Governor's Balls and turning the two-night Creative Arts Emmys into virtual events. We tackle the Comedy, Limited Series and Drama categories (about an hour each) including all acting. So much to unpack here with the newly expanded categories (eight in series and supporting roles for drama and comedy) and how the the loss of Game of Thrones opens up the race tremendously. Does that mean a long-standing bystander like Rhea Seehorn (Better Call Saul) finally gets in or was she never that close to begin with? What does Lead Actor in a Drama Series look like, which has been on a clear path of rewarding only first and last season performances with wins? How will Apple fare in its first Emmy season with The Morning Show and Defending Jacob? Watch out for full written predictions including writing and directing throughout this week. There is a slight glitch between 1:54:00-1:54:15 while Amanda is doing her Supporting Actor in a Drama Series predictions that couldn't be fixed in editing. This podcast runs 3h 5m 50s with intro and outro. Opening: Pose opening (FX) Closing: Schitt's Creek main and end title medley (by Maribeth Solomon and Geek Music)

Two Words with Taku
Episode 68 – Daina Reid on Directing Australian TV Drama, Comedy and Sunshine

Two Words with Taku

Daina Reid is an award-winning Australian TV and Film Director. And she’s just lovely! In this interview, she shares how a Tropfest short film led her to leave acting and become a director. She talks about her recent work on SBS’s Sunshine TV drama and what she learnt working with the South-Sudanese community in Melbourne. Later in the interview, Daina explains some of her directorial and technical decisions for filming comedy shows. Less is more! It was also interesting to hear her thoughts on casting and what it’s like working with non-actors compared to established actors like Asher Keddie (Offspring; Paper Giants). I met Daina when I attended her Directing Masterclass a few weeks ago. Learning more about directing is really changing how I write my stories. In this episode, you may hear my fellow classmate Kylie in the background who came to film the interview with me. Find more about Daina Reid on her IMDB profile: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0717225/< Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries (ABC TV) Fledgling detective Phryne Fisher is known for her sharp wit and pearl-handled pistol, which she uses to fight injustice in Melbourne during the 1920s. The glamorous sleuth makes her way through the city’s alleyways and jazz clubs while she fights crime as part of a larger mission — making sure that Murdoch Foyle, who she believes is responsible for the disappearance of her younger sister, stays behind bars. She fights for justice for people who can’t help themselves, including exploited workers and missing girls. Sunshine (SBS) Sunshine is based in Melbourne’s outer-western suburb of Sunshine and its surrounds. The story follows Jacob Garang, a young, aspiring South Sudanese-Australian basketballer who is on the cusp of being picked up by scouts for the US College league. He gets caught up in a police investigation involving a teenage girl from one of Melbourne’s affluent suburbs. The Wrong Girl (Network 10) The series follows Lily Woodward, a producer on a morning television show, and what happens when life, love and friendships collide. Longing for a life rich in romance, a dynamic career and a happy family, Lily is constantly thrown off course. As her journey continues, Lily discovers that sometimes the right choices can lead to the wrong places and the wrong choices can turn out to be the right ones. The Secret River (ABC TV) This two-part miniseries is based on the novel of the same name written by Kate Grenville. It follows the story of young couple, William and Sal Thornhill, who are transported to the new colony of New South Wales in 1805, giving a look into the colonisation of Australia and the escalating conflict between the original Indigenous inhabitants and the newly arrived white convicts and settlers. Romper Stomper (Stan) Romper Stomper is an Australian television series sequel to the 1992 film Romper Stomper movie and and set 25 years after the events in the film. The six-part series follows a new generation of far-right activists and their anti-fascist counterparts, with the story focussing on a fictional far-right group led by Blake Farrand known as Patriot Blue.
