This week on It Was a Thing on TV First, in the 70s, Sherwood Schwartz had an idea to introduce a couple with a multiethnic group of kids. The ahead-of-its-time idea was revisited in the mid 80s, but would anybody watch it? And what happens when nobody watches it? On this episode, we break down the strange case of “Together We Stand”…. Or “Nothing is Easy”. Then, in honor of Susan St. James' 77th birthday back in August, Greg and Chico looked at this 2004 straight-to-DVD movie about a down on his luck clutz who teams up with a sea captain to find a sunken treasure. Also, Lou Rawls and Richard Moll are trying to stop them for some reason. We're also pretty sure that The Dove Foundation which "approved" this movie didn't actually watch this. The Brady Bunch is one of several TV series not to have a proper series finale. The final episode broadcast, "The Hair-Brained Scheme", centered around Bobby's idea of selling hair tonic. Once Greg uses the tonic, it turns his hair bright orange just before graduation day. Series patriarch Robert Reed was written out of the episode due to his objection over the storyline. Moreover, he and series creator Sherwood Schwartz fought constantly over the show's content.

Big Big episode folks! This is an interview that is one year in the making and the guest is one that I am very excited about. When I was growing up in the 70s and 80s (which was amazing for many reasons) TV was just a different experience then. For one, there was only a few channels, there was no recording shows, there was no fast forwarding through show so you had to be there to watch and before NBC created “Must see TV” there was our own version of must see TV on channel 38 and 56 both UHF stations out of Boston – if you are under 35 and don't know what UHF is, look it up…you needed an actual antenna to watch…anyway, part my after school ritual with my brother and anyone else was around involved watching a Certain Show…it's the story of lovely lady who was bringing up three very lovely girls…that's right that show was "The Brady Bunch" a TV classic and groundbreaking show in many ways…a cultural touchstone for certain. Our guest tonight is Wendy Winans from Bradyworld.com and she is one of the biggest (IF NOT THE BIGGEST) Brady Bunch fan on the planet and she has a cool website to prove it! Wendy and I talk about the origins of Bradyworld.com, her amazing Brady Bunch collection that will be featured on this weeks version of "Collectors Call" on Metv! (go check it out!), we discuss the infamous Tiki Doll necklace (bad luck OR good luck?), we review the mystery of Carols first husband, the sad story of Tiger the dog(s), the amazing list of celebrity guest performers, the genius of Sherwood Schwartz, Fake Jan, MARCIA MARCIA MARCIA, the amazing talent of Barry Williams, the business acumen of Peter Brady, all the kids hooking up with each other, was Bobby a Dead Head?, MARCIA MARCIA MARCIA, a fact that no one knows about the Brady Bunch, the generosity of Robert Reed, the curse of Johnny Bravo, Wendy's favorite episodes, the efficiently powerful impact of Sam the Butcher, the miracle of all Brady child actors avoiding the very common pitfalls of child stardom, which character would she most want to hang out and and of course we tackle the subject of Cousin Oliver among many other hidden secrets and stories about the greatest TV show ever made*! We hope you enjoyed the conversation as much as we did and make sure to check out Wendy's edition of "Collectors Call" on MeTV! #Bradybunch #bradyworld #marciamarciamarcia #tikidoll #samthebutcher #metv #collectorscall #fakejan #cousinoliver #barrywilliams #johnnybravo #tigerthedog #lisawhelchel #UHF #aftershoolspecial #Alice #sherwoodschwartz #1970sTV

The Girls do a deep dive off Gilligan's Island, with special guest and Gilligan Expert, Robbie-Ann's childhood bestie Karen. Karen talks about her all-things Tiki obsession, which evolved into a Gilligan's Island obsession. Robbie-Ann asks, and Karen answers, the tough questions: how did they get years out of that radio battery? Why didn't they build a boat? Where did they get all those wardrobe changes from just a three-hour tour (a threeee hour tour...)? Amy talks about her after-school joy watching Gilligan's Island, and her love for the vibrant colors on the show. Karen and Robbie-Ann reminisce about getting off the kindergarten bus at Karen's house and spending the afternoon on the Island. Amy reveals the shocking world tragedy event that occurred on the day the cast were filming the pilot episode, and how you can see a reference to it in the original opening sequence. Amy goes on to describe Sherwood Schwartz' origins of the show, as something of a political statement. Shocker: when Schwartz first conceived the series, the seven characters originally represented the Seven Deadly Sins. Can you identify who was which? The Girls discuss. Karen reveals her favorite episode, featuring the fictional Beatle-esque band the Mosquitos. The Girls dissect the Honey Bees' (Ginger, Mary Ann and Mrs. Howell) song "You Need Us." Naturally this leads to discussing the iconic tv Gilligan's Island theme song, and Karen reveals a crazy fact about the Wellingtons, who sang it. Amy reveals that the original pilot's Calypso theme song was co-written by none other than Star Wars, Jaws, Indiana Jones and E.T. composer John Williams. BUT - then Amy also reveals what Christmas classic was written by George Wyle, who co-wrote the historic "Just sit right back..." theme song that ended up in the show. Amy reports the five basic plot lines that covered almost all of the episodes. Gilligan's opera-radio reception in his teeth. The Dream Sequence episodes. Trivia: The Skipper's real name. The Professor's real name. Mrs. Howell's maiden name. Which cast member was the only one allowed by Sherwood Schwartz to improvise? The 1978 "Rescue from Gilligan's Island" tv movie. Casting Could-have-beens: could Jane Mansfield have been Ginger? Tina Louise, "method actor." The old Ginger vs. Mary Ann debate. Gilligan's first name: a controversy. Raquel Welch or Pat Priest as Mary Ann? Carol O'Connor as the Skipper? Dabney Coleman as The Professor? Dawn Wells, Natalie Schafer and their "Ice Cream Diet." Which Gilligan's Island stars ended up on Sherwood Schwartz' next sitcom, The Brady Bunch? Jim Backus' stellar acting pedigree. The show's enduring effect on its cast: typecasting. Which cast members embraced their roles after the show, and who didn't. Which cast member ended up being the only one still earning residuals decades later? The Gilligan's Island tie-in to the "Very Brady Sequel" movie. Sidebar: the 1990's Brady movies. "Gilligan's Planet?!!" "Aloha Paradise" - who remembers this show? The Gilligan's Island "warm fuzzy." Mary Ann's navel: snuck by the network standards and practices. The various island inventions: the car, the washing machine. Sidebar: Robbie-Ann and Karen talk about their kindergarten friendship, and the outfits they wore. Gilligan's Island shooting locations - where Seinfeld and Roseanne were also filmed. Who was the only Gilligan's Island star who did not guest star on The Love Boat? Sidebar: a discussion of their Gen X Childhood friendship. Robbie-Ann describes going to see Shaun Cassidy with Karen in 1978, and Amy wants to know what Karen and Robbie-Ann wore to the show. Who had better toys, Karen or Robbie-Ann? Robbie-Ann coveted Karen's Bionic Woman Dome House, her I Dream of Jeannie doll and bottle-house playset, and her Pet Ghost. Robbie-Ann describes the first day of kindergarten 40+ years ago, when she and Karen met. Karen and Robbie-Ann talk about kindergarten life in the 70s, and Robbie-Ann's bravery in the face of being told she couldn't play with the boy's better toys at recess. Final thoughts on the "warm fuzzy" of Gilligan's Island: there was no villain, no romance on the island, and Karen celebrates the real life friendship between Mary Ann, and Natalie Schafer.
We had a great conversation with Producer & Writer Lloyd J. Schwartz on The Chris & Sandy Show. We talked about so many things from his Classic Couples Counseling, his life growing up with his father Sherwood Schwartz, some about The Brady Bunch & Gilligans Island, he told some really amazing stories to a whole lot more!Lloyd J. Schwartz is the playwright. A man of all media, he wrote for the TV series Love, American Style; Alice; The Munsters Today; The A Team, The Love Boat, Baywatch and more. As an ABC network executive, he supervised production on Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, What's Happening and Three's Company. With his father, TV legend Sherwood Schwartz, he co-created Harper Valley P.T.A. Lloyd also produced numerous iterations of the Brady Bunch and Gilligan's Island franchises (created by Sherwood) for feature films, television and stage. With his wife Barbara, Lloyd created the long-running Storybook Theatre at Theatre West. He has also had 34 produced plays.CLASSIC COUPLES COUNSELING OPENS APRIL 1 AT THEATRE WEST. THIS PRODUCTION HAS BROADWAY POTENTIAL TELEVISION WRITER/PRODUCER OF THE BRADY BUNCH & GILLIGANS ISLANDLLOYD SCHWARTZ IS THE WRITER/ BRAINCHILD BEHIND THIS PRODUCTIONSchwartz said “ I was intrigued with the idea of what would happen if the very troubled Shakespearean characters went to couples therapy. What would it be like if Hamlet and Ophelia sought help? Or Romeo and Juliet? Or MacBeth and Lady MacBeth? Or Othello and Desdemona? or Kate and Petruchio? Would it help? And I then started imagining if the therapist had her own problems which would make her patient's problems even worse. On May 9th, 1961, a still-celebrated speech rocked the world of broadcast television. In it, FCC Chairman Newton Minow zeroed in on television's vapid programming landscape, and the words "vast wasteland" became a contemporary catchphrase. More from WNYC's Sara Fishko in this edition of Fishko Files. Newton Minow told broadcasters that they might lose their licenses if they didn't improve the content of their television. Hollywood producer Sherwood Schwartz felt that Minow was interfering with broadcasters. To rib Minow, Schwartz named the ill-fated boat on his show, Gilligan's Island, the S.S. Minnow. Minow and Public Television Newton Minow played a major role in the creation of Public Television in the United States. Channel 13 in New York began in the 1940s as a Commercial Television station with a cultural bent. After going through several owners, Channel 13 was put on the market in 1961. Minow and a number of interested broadcasting colleagues got together to help Channel 13 make the transition from a Commercial Television station to a Public Television station. One day I read in the paper that Channel 13 was being sold. And there was a group of people in New York -- particularly led by some of the foundations -- that were trying to buy it and make it into an educational station. And I decided then and there that we were going to help them, and then we did. And Channel 13 became an educational station. And we did the same thing in Los Angeles, the same thing in Washington. And without those three we would never have had a national system. My main goal was to expand choice. To let the viewer have a wider range of programming. And that’s why we created, really, public television. By expanding choice it seemed to me that was the best role for the government. Channel 13’s first day as a Public Television station was September 16, 1962. Edward R. Murrow introduced the first broadcast. Mike Dann – then a programming executive at CBS -- remembers Minow’s role in Public Television. I think he was a great advocate of it. And made broadcasters and the public conscious of the difference between PBS and the broadcast networks. There was a sense of dignity. We didn’t have public broadcasting practically at all at the start. There was none. It wasn’t until a number of us banded together and helped start channel 13 in New York. I think he helped make public broadcasting more important. Jack Gould Newton Minow cited Jack Gould as a major influence: "At the time [of the FCC appointment] I had been deeply influenced by a television critic named Jack Gould, who was the television critic for the New York Times. He was writing very often about the failure, as he perceived it, of the FCC to uphold the public interest in regulating broadcasting. And I went to the FCC with his message very much in my mind." From 1948 to 1972, Jack Gould was the head television reporter and critic for the New York Times. Gould’s columns were devoured by television executives. And because he worked with the Times as television critic for so long – from TV’s beginnings to its installation as a cultural mainstay -- even these selected article titles show the progression of the medium, in just his first few years on the job (Excerpted from Watching Television Come of Age, by Jack Gould). “Matter of Form: Television Must Develop Own Techniques If It Is To Have Artistic Vitality, October 31, 1948” “Edward R. Murrow’s News Review ‘See It Now’ Demonstrates Journalistic Power of Video, November 19, 1951” “Celebrity Time: Murrow Puts Camera into Their Homes in ‘Person to Person,’ October 7, 1953” “Man on the Street: The Public Often Can Outshine TV Stars, August 14, 1955” For more from the people heard in this episode of Fishko Files… Newton Minow is a lawyer living in Chicago. He writes often – his most recent article, on the 50th anniversary of his speech, appeared in The Atlantic. Mike Dann’s book about his years in television, As I Saw It: The Inside Story of the Golden Years of Television, is available here. Thomas Doherty is a professor of American studies at Brandeis University. One of his books is Cold War, Cool Medium: Television, McCarthyism, and American Culture. Mary Ann Watson wrote The Expanding Vista: American Television in the Kennedy Years. This is the final edition of Fishko Files at WNYC. The episodes will live online and in the WNYC archives. After college she joined her father, Sherwood Schwartz (famed creator of Gilligan’s Island and The Brady Bunch), as a writer. Hope’s musical It’s The Housewives! enjoyed a very successful L.A.run, as did A Very Brady Musical, for which she co-wrote both book and score and which earned her the “Best Author” ADA award. Hope’s innovative play Without Annette had extended runs at The Whitefire Theatre and Theatre West and is published by Playscripts. “THE GILLIGAN MANIFESTO” WILL DEBUT AT 12TH ANNUAL LA FEMME INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, SATURDAY OCT. 22 Writer-Director Cevin Soling’s highly anticipated documentary, The Gilligan Manifesto, will be the Saturday night presentation at the La Femme International Film Festival on Oct. 22 at 6 pm at Laemmle’s Music Hall Theater Venue 2 in Beverly Hills. If you missed Cevin Soling on today's show, listen here! Just one year after the Cuban Missile Crisis, radio and television writer Sherwood Schwartz began filming his comedy classic Gilligan's Island, which depicts seven Americans shipwrecked on a deserted island. Soling’s film reveals that this seemingly innocuous sitcom was actually an analogue for a post-apocalyptic world where survivors had to rebuild civilization as this was a major concern during the Cold War where many families had fallout shelters in their homes. What is even more shocking is that the society the castaways create is founded on Marxist Communism. Soling’s revelation was published in the prestigious academic journal, Americana: The Journal of American Popular Culture. To convert his article into a feature documentary, Soling interviewed creator Sherwood Schwartz. He also spoke with Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells, who played the Professor and Mary Ann, and several professors from Harvard. “Sherwood Schwartz often noted that he conceived Gilligan’s Island as a social microcosm where people from all walks of life would have to figure out how to get along,” Soling said, “but he confessed to me, in his last interview, that the show was deliberately designed as lowbrow humor in order to conceal its political message. For this reason, American audiences never realized that the show celebrates Marxism and lampoons Western capitalism and democratic governance.” “The most transgressive message conveyed by Gilligan’s Island is that it shows how much better off people are in under true communism – not the dictatorship government the Soviets and McCarthyites called communism. The characters that represent the pinnacle of success in capitalist society – the millionaire and the movie star, become whole people and establish social bonds that they never could have otherwise. On the island, their lives cease to be empty.” La Femme board member Deborah Gilels served as associate producer on the documentary which was edited by Joe Davenport and narrated by Rennie Davis, who, along with Abbie Hoffman was a member of the Chicago Seven. David Jackson’s Showcase Entertainment is selling the worldwide rights. Cevin Soling produced and directed the first theatrically released documentary on education, The War on Kids, which was honored as the best educational documentary at the New York Independent Film and Video Festival and has been broadcast on The Documentary Channel and The Sundance Channel. Soling wrote, produced, and directed Ikland, which documented his efforts to rediscover the lost Ik tribe of northern Uganda, who were famously disparaged in the early 1970s as the worst people in the world. The film won Best Documentary Content at the Boston International Film Festival and was heralded by the NY Times and other major media outlets. Last year, he completed Mr. Cevin & the Cargo Cult, a documentary about a tribe in Vanuatu who worship America, and is currently working on The Summer of Hate, a documentary on the Beatles’ controversial observations on religion and racism during their tour of America in 1966. ABOUT THE FILM At the height of the Cold War, Gilligan's Island depicted seven Americans living in an analogue of a post-apocalyptic world where the survivors have to rebuild civilization. Remarkably, the society they create is pure communist. Interviews with the show's creator and some of the surviving actors, as well from professors from Harvard, reveal that Gilligan's Island was deliberately designed to be dismissed as low brow comedy in order to celebrate Marxism and lampoon Western democratic constructs.
