Demand for artificial intelligence and machine learning is booming—and so is AI's energy demand. AI requires massive amounts of computing power, which means huge data centers need to be built to enable AI's widespread adoption.AI's energy demand is expected to grow faster than new generation comes on line. Solving that will be hard enough, but differences between the tech industry and the electric power industry make it even more difficult in some ways. The tech industry evolved with a move-fast-and-break-things ethos, while the electric power industry is one of the most heavily regulated and conservative industries in the country. Developing a new data center takes 12, 18, maybe 24 months, whereas adding new generation and transmission takes years.Tech and power are odd bedfellows, and while they are getting to know each other better, they still have plenty more to learn.Ben Lee, a computer scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, is one of the handful of people in the country who works in the space between the electric power industry and big tech. He says there are opportunities for the two to work more productively together. There are also some things that likely will not make much of a difference to accommodating AI demand in the near future, such as time-of-use rates.

Will Lough, manager of R&M Global Sustainable Opportunities, tells us more about the newly launched fund. We touch on the coexistence of value investing and sustainability, emphasising the importance of defining these concepts broadly rather than in narrow terms. Will explains how sustainability is evaluated through three pillars: people, innovation, and the environment, with varying importance depending on the business model. In the second half of the interview we cover global smaller companies and Japanese equities as a current focus for the fund, highlighting two examples: Nikon and Baker Hughes. What's covered in this episode: An overview of the R&M Global Sustainable Opportunities fundWhy the fund has a bias towards smaller companiesHow value investing and sustainability can work hand in handThe three pillars of sustainability in the fundThe importance of valuations when looking at companiesThe types of companies the fund excludesWhy the manager is taking a more contrarian positionThe appeal of global smaller companies todayWhy the fund has a growing interest in Japanese equitiesHow the fund has been engaging with Japanese companies for positive changeThe investment case for NikonThe sustainability case for energy company Baker Hughes More about the fund: R&M Global Sustainable Opportunities is a high conviction, value-orientated fund, that invests in companies of all sizes. It offers a real alternative to the average global sustainable fund, which usually comes with a large-cap growth style tilt. The fund's favoured area is finding undervalued quality businesses. Its key sustainability objective is aligning with net zero by 2050.Learn more on fundcalibre.comPlease remember, we've been discussing individual companies to bring investing to life for you. It's not a recommendation to buy or sell. The fund may or may not still hold these companies at the time of listening. My guest this week is Andrew Rimby, host of the Ivory Tower Boiler Room podcast. Andrew's career as an entertainer began at an early age as a stage performer, but then he took an unexpected swerve into academia, and he's spent the last decade pursuing a PhD, exploring the work of Victorian poets and in particular the homoerotics of Walt Whitman and Oscar Wilde. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First, a reminder that I've got a book coming out this May — Hi Honey, I'm Homo, now available for pre-order at gaysitcoms.com. And we've just announced a bunch of in-person events I'll be hosting around the country to celebrate the book launch! So far we have New York, Chicago, and Seattle on the calendar with more on the way. Check out the details at gaysitcoms.com.And! I popped by Andrew's podcast to talk about my work, activism, and queer liberation. Check that out here.

Miriam is a high achiever. She went through medical school. Twice. She has a non-stop “GO!” button for earning any title or diploma dangled in front of her. She's also altruistic. But she didn't see that she was leaving herself and her family behind while helping others. Until her 7-year-old's wake up call — “Mom, why did you have me if your phone is more important?” Miriam's priorities didn't fit her values. But it took her four months into teaching others about burnout, in tears, for her to realize that SHE was burned out. The tipping point finally came in an interview with a man for the book she was writing — The 3G Cycle of Life. She quit her job to save her sanity and live according to her values. Find out about her journey back to sanity, and with her debut as an author, how she's helping others do the same. About me... My name is Miriam Zylberglait, everybody calls me "Dr.Z" I am from Perú. I went to medical school there and practiced medicine for almost 10 years. I came to the U.S in 2011, leaving my parents, friends, and my job as an academic physician, to follow the love of my life. In the U.S. I had to start from zero. Learn a new language, and repeat my residency and fellowship. During these years, while in my 40's, I rounded the hospital with my pregnant belly, twice. Best experience ever... I was never alone, my baby's kicks were the best reminder of why I needed to continue pursuing my dreams. Now I'm lucky to have a supportive husband, parents, sister, friends, and two wonderful little boys that help me to find harmony between my personal and professional life. Professional Bio I am a physician triple Board-Certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, and Obesity Medicine. I completed my medical education and Geriatric Fellowship in Perú and provided patient care for over 10 years at the Naval Geriatric Center. After moving to the U.S in 2011, I completed my training in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, got certified in Obesity Medicine. Guided by my interest in education, leadership and advocacy, I completed a Physician Leadership Academy with the Florida Medical Association, a Fellowship on Leadership Development and Education with the American Association of Medical Colleges, and have been certified as a Mental Health Ally and Physician Wellness Advocate. In 2021, I had the honor to be selected by the American College of Physicians to be part of the National Wellness and Professional Fulfillment Committee, and in 2022, I joined the Creators Institute at Georgetown University to write my first book — The 3G Cycle: The Secret of Achieving Joy, Meaning and Well-being. Religion and Sex – Can They Be Bedfellows? Today we discuss the Muslim culture, sex, and vaginismus with Dr. Sadaf Lodhi, OBGyn and sex coach for Muslim women. She is host of the Muslim Sex Podcast – we discuss her origin story Religion can have a profound effect on one's sex life/sexuality. Islam is a sex positive religion. When the Muslim countries were colonized they tended to become more puritanical. Islam discusses sex within the context of marriage. Many times women experience shame and people don't talk about women's pleasure. Common things Dr. Lodhi sees women coming to her with: Seeing sex as a duty Low libido Beliefs like sex is dirty or sex will be painful One of her most important things she likes to do is empower women through education. Women get pressure from their partner and an expectation that it is a duty. And they are failing them and God. Vaginismus – the involuntary contraction of the muscles surrounding the lower 1/3rd of the vagina. 1/3rd of Muslim culture may struggle with vaginismus. The role of mindfulness in helping vaginismus and low desire. “People make putting something in the vagina a big freaking deal” – Dr. C. The role of PT in treating vaginismus. There are no FDA approved medications for vaginismus. Dr. Lodhi shares a huge win with us. It is not about the number of times of sex a week. The role of the scholars and the males in helping women feel sex positive. Things got witchy during the recording of this episode. Unfortunately, there were some technical difficulties that resulted in a decent portion of this discussion having to be cut. However, our discussion of 1977 and 2018's SUSPIRIA with special guest, DANE DIAMOND, still manages to be spellbinding. One, a cinematic touchstone, the other, a haunting homage. Dunia Best was a member of the very first incarnation of The Slackers. And after she left the band, she took a song she'd hope would be a Slackers song, "Walk," and started playing it acoustically. A friend suggested she could start her own band. That band, Agent 99 (1993-1995) played all over New York with No Commercial Value (Scott Sturgeon's first band), The Slackers, as well as punk and funk bands. Though Agent 99 was short-lived, many great musicians came through, like Ara Babajian (The Slackers, Leftover Crack), Alec Baillie (Leftover Crack), Jayson Nugent (The Slackers), and perhaps the most famous of all: Dunia's brother Ahmed Best, who would go on to play Jar Jar Binks in the Star Wars prequels. On today's episode, we talk to Dunia about her time in Agent 99 and the Slackers, but also get into newer projects like Brave New Girl, Dubistry, Rude Girl Revue and Dunia and Aram, who just released their debut LP called Bedfellows. We also talk about Dunia's non-ska influences (Steely Dan, Sade, Joni Mitchell), mind-numbing data-entry jobs, the trials of teaching music, and how being a fitness instructor doesn't pay a living wage. We also discuss the Fierce Pussy Fest and the formation of Riot Grrrls (Agent 99 was there!), and Dunia's deep friendship with Ari Up from The Slits. Today we're bringing you an episode from our friends at Sway about the war in Ukraine and the challenges of conflict-zone reporting. Clarissa Ward has had, as she puts it, a “long and very complicated relationship” with Russia. The chief international correspondent for CNN, she has had stints in Moscow since the beginning of her career, and has struggled to get a Russian visa since she investigated the 2020 poisoning of the Russian opposition leader Aleksei Navalny. But that hasn't stopped her from reporting on the region, and in particular on Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Yet after months of war, it can be an uphill battle to keep the viewers' attention on the front line. “Our job is to keep finding ways to make sure that we don't become numb and desensitized to the horrors of war, because that is exactly how wars continue and grind on,” Ward says.In this conversation, taped last week, Kara talks to Ward about her time reporting in Ukraine, what it's like to “let fear sit in the passenger seat” when reporting from the front and how the hangover of war can leave correspondents detached from the “bourgeois and banal” normalcy of home. You can find transcripts (posted midday) and more information for all episodes at nytimes.com/sway, and you can find Kara on Twitter @karaswisher.“The Ezra Klein Show” is produced by Annie Galvin, Jeff Geld and Rogé Karma; fact-checking by Michelle Harris; original music by Isaac Jones; mixing by Jeff Geld; audience strategy by Shannon Busta. Our executive producer is Irene Noguchi. Special thanks to Kristin Lin and Kristina Samulewski.

You can find transcripts (posted midday) and more information for all episodes at nytimes.com/sway, and you can find Kara on Twitter @karaswisher.

What do you think of when you hear the term “forensic accounting”? I am willing to venture a guess that your first word associations would not be fascination or excitement. However, during this episode of the Defense Never Rests with Howard Silverstone you will learn that the forensic accounting world is far from mundane! In fact, he has encountered both guns and Prince William and thankfully not at the same time! After having the opportunity to sit down and hear Howard's experiences from a visit to Buckingham Palace to uncovering fraud within an organization, I found myself wanting to pop a bag of popcorn and hear more. I expect you will want to do the same. Of course, he offers tremendous insight as to when you may want a forensic accounting expert on your side and when is the best time to get one on board. What has your experience been with forensic accounting?
The Mobility Standard podcast this week hosted John Hanafin, chief executive at Huriya Private, who spoke with us about the complementarity of investment migration and financial planning, both of which are fields in which he has extensive experience.Timestamps00:30 - Who is John Hanafin and what is Huriya Private?05:45 - The complementarity of investment migration and financial planning: Can you plan for one without also planning for the other? Are the two realms best kept separate or will more firms begin offering these services in conjunction with each other?17:04 - Balkan countries planning for CBI and which of them are really closest to EU membership.19:57 - Why Ireland should have a CIP, why and how it should reform its IIP, and which other programs it should be modeled on.Investment migration and financial planning: Joined at the hipMany firms in the investment migration market choose to steer clear of providing advice on tax and estate planning, partly because they don't have the necessary training but also to avoid becoming subject to the stricter regulations pertaining to such practices. Questioned as to whether he thinks RCBI practitioners should also help clients plan for the tax and estate implications of partaking in investment migration programs, Hanafin indicated they were essentially two sides of the same coin:"I think it's mandatory [to plan for both together]. It shouldn't even be a consideration […] I don't understand how it can be just a transaction. […] There are people in the industry who are very good at what they do and who purely want to do [RCBI] and that's it. And I've worked for people who have had that attitude, shall we say. ""In Dubai, you can be selling bananas on Friday and passports on Monday.""Maybe the guy comes to my office and says 'I own the office tower next door,' to which I might say 'oh great, how do you own it? In your individual name? Okay, well you understand this is a civil law country, not a common law country, and you have sharia implications of having assets over here. Perhaps that's something we can discuss alongside your passport,' and so on."Hanafin comments that Dubai, in particular, is a place where clients can easily end up with advisors who are too narrowly focused on RCBI and who don't give due consideration to possible tax and estate implications."The issue with Dubai as a jurisdiction is that you can set up a specialist immigration firm in about 48 hours. You can't do that in the UK, for example, where you need to be a qualified immigration lawyer. You can't do that in most European countries. In Dubai, you can be selling bananas on Friday and passports on Monday."North Macedonia and Albania "about five years ahead of Montenegro" on EU accession"There are rumors about Serbia, there are rumors about Croatia, there are rumors about Albania," he says, but adds that there are some misconceptions as to which Balkan countries are closest to EU accession. "Montenegro promoted themselves as the next EU country. But if you read the statutes and the laws, North Macedonia and Albania are about five years ahead of Montenegro."Where would John Hanafin most like to see a new CIP open? In his native Ireland, he responds without hesitation. For now, however, he says there are still too many uncomfortable memories from the Bertie Ahern years, when Ireland operated a citizenship by investment program (of sorts). He does, however, lobby the Irish government from time to time, urging them to at least reform their Ireland Immigrant Investor Program and make it more attractive.
"You've been talking a lot about this, but please keep going. The green economic revolution is an illusion! If the hidden values, morels and agendas are about perpetual growth, it will mean more mineral extraction and the levels of unsustainability we witness in the current system. Its not about capitalism or communism, even though both are closer bedfellows than they may have us believe. Both focus on constant growth. To me, it seems to be about finding a new framework to live by, with elements of both these systems. Its true, I believe, that the fossil fuel industry have helped people out of poverty, but has already placed some in poverty. For example, there are endless cases of societies being evicted from lands, in pursuit of mineral extractions etc. Its not just in colonial days, its still happening now, but pushed under the carpet. The current value system we collectively hold will see more and more of us saying hello to poverty and destitution. No one yet has a system to replace what we have, but its about getting all the big thinkers, around a table, to find that new adaptable system, to organize our varied societies around. We need to find better ways to sustain human wellbeing, and increase it, as both communism and capitalism have failed us to a degree." Do you “spoon” when you sleep with a spouse or bed partner? Outside, the shutters may be banging against the house in the stiff western wind; the windows encased in white frost; the wind chill at minus 20. But inside, with another body close against yours under the covers, a warmth builds quickly. It's as if the heat of the body is amplified by being bounced back and forth, the way mirrors can refract light and back and forth to intensify heat and light fires. And the benefits of spooning go beyond heat, to feelings of intimacy and protection. You might even feel secure enough to surrender that axe you keep next to your bed to dispatch intruders. Spooning involves adjustments and compromises. If you're the big spoon, does your bottom arm comfortably fit under your partner's head or torso? If you're the little spoon, is the hand of the top arm resting where you like having it? If one of you tosses, does the other turn, and how do you negotiate the frequency? You are surrendering considerable individual autonomy to sleep as a unit with another, so much so that I wonder whether the inclination to spoon correlates with political orientation. How much freedom are you willing to give up to gain those feelings of warmth and protection? As many of you know from your pets, who will sleep with you given half the chance, animals too seek the warmth of other bodies at night. The last cat I shared a bed with remained draped over my feet, but when Lillie the dog is in my bed she seems to work her way up through the night until her head is resting on the pillow and she can herself be properly spooned. Nor is the practice of group sleeping confined to animals that, sharing our homes, have human behavior as an example. I don't know if evolutionary biologists have studied group sleeping as a cross-species phenomenon, but it's pretty clear to me that the instinct to sleep à deux or en masse is shared across innumerable species and may be deeply engrained in our animal DNA. Most of my chickens line up on their roosting bars right next to one another, though there's ample room to spread out. Lambs will sleep with their mothers for months after they're born and even weaned. If I were to arrive early enough in the morning, before the sheep rouse themselves, I'd see Sophie's lamb, Chloe, nestled in alongside her mother, between the front and back legs, not far from Lale's ram lamb with his mother, and so on, each little family unit in their own cluster. Pigs go the sheep one better. Back when we had 30 or 35 pigs, we'd find groups of a dozen or more young ones sleeping piled up against one another, and not necessarily from the same mother or litter. On the coldest days, like the ones we're experiencing right now, you could literally see steam arising from the heap. I'm sure there's a social structure of sorts to these pile ups, such that one's position in the heap correlates to some sort of dominance in the group. But it was always hard for me to tell whether it would be preferable to be under three other pigs or the one on the top. The top one might be exposed to cold air, but the steam from everyone below might provide sufficient warmth and it might be far easier to breathe up top. Of course, not everyone has another creature to rub up against. Luckily, we humans have central heat, space heaters, hot water bottles, blankets, duvets, down comforters, and flannel pajamas, all doing their part to keep us cozy. The animals, too, take an “all of the above” approach, enabling them to thrive in unheated shelters. They shield themselves from the wind by sleeping on the leeside of whatever structure they can take advantage of. The sheep will sometimes even sleep outside the barn, so long as the barn wall is protecting them from the wind, in order to catch the heat of the earliest sunrays in the morning from the southeast. And animals build nests. Nests, made of l
I loved being snug under my heavy blankets yesterday so much that I took all my blankets from atop my doona and folded them in half - doubling the weight and cosiness. Was so weighty and nice. I'm investing in some weighted blankets soon. Was amazing. Who needs bedfellows! Work. Another project due. Didn't quite get it done. Had a coffee at like 6. Could be a long night. Catch up meeting with manager postponed. At least I feel like I'm starting to get a roll going now so I'll be a bit more optimistic going into the manager meeting tomorrow. Lady in a meeting was wearing a Warmcore fleece. I had my photo of Caroline in the Warmcore shirt right to hand. Of course I probably went on about it for too long and made it weird. Went viral on reddit with a Kanye screenshot. Mug from @rosaliekate arrived. That was fast! Was going to not bother closing my Apple Watch rings but it's the 28th and there's only a few days left in the month for me to get an award. Walked in actual hailstorm to get my Move goal. Was going to spend that time doing pro bono. Will do a bit. Bath with salts, bubbles, and a wine. Lovely. Back to work before bed! M: 7. E: 7. L: 0.

Ali Hendry is a holistic relationship coach, corporate trainer, and performer based in the UK. She currently works with womxn, especially those that identify with the LGBTQ+ community. Ali believes that when we approach life with compassion and curiosity, we cultivate happiness and holistic wellness. We had a thoughtful conversation about inclusion, holistic philosophy, therapy, passion, jealousy, friendships, fear of abandonment, embodied emotions, and relationship contracts. We delved into the juicy topics of jealousy, envy, and compersion and how they play out in friendships, monogamous, and non-monogamous relationships. I was particularly intrigued by the idea of romantic, non-erotic friendships. And, of course, we talked about boundaries and how important they are to establish with ourselves and others. Ali's pronouns are she/her and she identifies as a gay woman. She has been married to a man and then to a woman. She now dates womxn (with an x – women, non-binary, trans folk) and is in an open relationship with a main partner. Episode 49 The story of how theatre found it's way into the church service on the most important days in the Christian calendar, Easter Sunday and Christmas Day. For a long time drama was a small elaboration to the massif the same way music, architecture and art were only included to amplify the message of the service and the word of God. Following a lot at their impact and use we get to the Trope, but it that really the beginnings of church drama? The Synod of Winchester in 970 might just have the answer.
