Dennis is joined via Zoom by L.A. theater director Bart DeLorenzo to talk about his newest production, Noel Coward's Design for Living at the Odyssey Theatre, as well as his career in general. Bart talks about why the 90 year-old play--about three young, struggling artists who can't seem to live without each other--seems so resonant in this moment. He also talks about his directing process, how he reads a play over and over and over again before he starts putting it on his feet and how he believes there are always two plays going on in any given production; the play on stage and the story that's unfolding in the audience. Other topics include: his memories of seeing plays as a child, what he's observed about Gen Z as a faculty member at the California Institute of the Arts, working with Joan Rivers on her autobiographical play A Piece of Work, looking for actors who make his "heart leap" during the casting process, why he loves Los Angeles how he reacts to people whp say theater in LA sucks, and how "nothing good can ever come from reading reviews." https://www.bartdelorenzo.com/

Michael Vaccaro had ended a 16 year relationship. In the dumps, he searched the internet for sad songs and poems to match his melancholy mood. But he found one poem that was uplifting. He liked the poem so much that he printed it out and put it in his wallet, where he carried it for five or six years. Then one day he met a man who embodied what was written in the poem. They were inseparable from that point on.This is a love story completely orchestrated by the Universe. Call it fate. Call it The Law of Attraction. Whatever words are used to describe this story- it was a time of pure magic. And it's one that will haunt the listener for a very long time.Wait for Him:Wait for the guy that calls you beautiful instead of hot,Who calls you back when you hang up on him,Who stays awake just to watch you sleep, who worries and takes care of you when you are ill.Wait for the guy that kisses your forehead, who wants to show you off to the world when you are wearing sweats, who holds your hand in front of his friends.Wait for the guy who is constantly reminding you of how much he cares about you,and how lucky he is to have you.Wait for the guy who turns to his friends and say, "That's him!"Wait for the guy who only wants you.- AntonioMichael Vaccaro is an actor/writer/producer/director/print model and singer. Theatre took a blow during the pandemic, but who better to tackle the challenges than a creative crew. Laurie Steven is an award-winning director, playwright, dramaturge, and the founding Artistic Director of Odyssey Theatre who joins me to share how her theatre group has embraced the growing genre of audio dramas with The Other Path, a unique collection of modern folklore that tackles today's big issues on your favourite podcast provider. We're all starved for some kindness, so I'm delighted to have my dear friend Erica Ehm join me to discuss The Undercover Kindness Project from The Ontario Caregivers Organization that she has partnered with to help spread comfort and joy to unsuspectiing caregivers who desperately could use our support. Anne Brodie is here with entertainment and this week she shares what she feels will be an Oscar contender with Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan for their gut-wrenching performances in The Banshees of Inisherin, South Korea's Official Oscar Selection for International Feature Film Decision to Leave, and Margaret Brown's stunning documentary Descendent, now on Netflix. Choosing to be compassionate over cynical is hard in a world that keeps throwing us curveballs but its the only way through. Leisse Wilcox joins me to to share her three top tips for helping others while maintaining your sanity in a topsy-turvy world. Added bonus Leisse's voice is like butter and if nothing else will soothe your soul just listening to her. We've talked a lot about mid-life lately on this show, so today I offer up someone who is walking the talk. Lesley Crewe wrote her first book at 50 and since then has published 14 books. She joins me to share more on this life pivot and details on her new book Nosy Parker. Finally, writing a book is a lot of work. Now imagine also creating an online world and soundtrack where fans can fully immerse themselves in your fictional world. That's exactly what my final guest Sienna Tristen has done with her husband Avi Silver in The Heretic's Guide to Homecoming, a labour of love that is less plot more vibes built over the last decade.

Dennis connects via Zoom with actor-writer-performance artist John Fleck whose musical satire It's Alive, It's ALIVE! is showing at the Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles through March 20. John talks about the show's central idea; that COVID is here to save us, not hurt us, where the original idea came from and where he got the inflatable COVID headress he wears through much of the show. He also recalls his experience, along with Tim Miller, Karen Finley, Tim Miller and Holly Hughes, as one of the NEA Four, the four artists who had received grants from the National Endowment of the Arts and whose grants were challenged by conservatives like Jesse Helms and others and whose case went all the way to Supreme Court. He talks about how the notoriety led to his first TV job, as a gay secretary in Steven Bochco's Murder One and how he regrets not being present at the Supreme Court hearing because he was working on TV show. John also recalls his early days in Los Angeles in the 1970's, the "radical change" he made that brought him here and opening for Edith Massey, John Waters' Egg Lady, at the One Way punk bar in Silverlake in 1983. Other topics include: embracing imperfection, how having his own shows makes the Hollywood acting hustle less soul-crushing, being an "age pioneer" at 71, the torture and glory of doing alien makeup for multiple Star Trek series and most recently Orville, appearing on projects like Tales of the City, Weeds, Seinfeld, Waterworld and the upcoming Tina Town, vamping in the dark when the power went out during a performance, and the late, great screenwriter who always came to his shows.

Stephanie Nash is a dynamic Mindfulness Coach, Integrative Counselor and speaker specializing in the comprehensive and uniquely structured Unified Mindfulness System, developed by Shinzen Young, with whom she has worked closely since 1998. An accomplished and versatile professional actress and acting coach for more than 30 years, she also has an expertise in body language. Using the Unified Mindfulness System, Stephanie designed and taught a mindfulness program for a 2012 Harvard Medical School brain study with breakthrough results (in connection with which her brain was also studied by Harvard!). She has co-taught a pilot course at UCLA that explored how mindfulness can enhance learning and writing. As a mindfulness coach, Stephanie encourages and teaches a joyful, light, practical approach on how to take mindfulness skills and apply them to living more fully in the present moment. She specializes in stress reduction, optimizing performance, and rewiring one’s relationship to food and eating, all with the goal of navigating life with more insight, less suffering, optimal performance and decision making, while enjoying the process. She is currently writing an instructional book on mindful eating – and also shares various meditations (including ones for sleeping, eating, and a program on “Letting Go of Negative Thinking and Judgment”) offered on the Insight Timer app. She addresses these issues in the easiest, lightest way possible, creating a “user friendly” approach to healing and deepening one’s experiences through mindful awareness and physicality, suffusing the learning with humor and joy. Stephanie has taught her unique style of laughing meditation, which utilizes laughter to help decrease suffering and elevate fulfillment in daily life. Her laughter meditation workshops make laughter contagious. She prescribes 10 minutes of laughing meditation per day to improve one’s quality of life and she incorporates mindful laughing into her stress reduction teaching. Stephanie has also led "Posture Clinics" at meditation retreats where she teaches how the natural structure of the body can support us in ways that most people are presently not utilizing (and consequently unnecessarily stressing the neck and shoulder muscles). She is presently completing her book, Posture for Meditation and Life, based on her article, Posture-pedia, which she wrote in 2005 and which is now widely used by meditation centers and teachers all over the United States. (She was even asked by Navy Seals if they could use it.) As a body language expert, Stephanie has taught a popular workshop called, Shifting Positions to Shift Perceptions: How Body Language Affects How You Think and Feel at UCLArts and Healing– calling upon her years of training in various movement and healing modalities as well as her acting training and experience. She has also taught Expressive Movement at the University of Southern California and has taught movement to various acting schools and groups. Stephanie grew up in Ohio. where the nearby woods were her refuge and seeded her lifelong love of being in nature. With a psychology degree from Duke University, and an MFA from the Yale School of Drama, Stephanie’s professional acting career started in the early 1980’s with a national tour of a Broadway show, “Barnum”, where she played the flute, juggled and hung on a trapeze – continuing over the next decades to numerous appearances in theatre and on TV shows, films and dozens of commercials. Los Angeles theatre audiences have seen her play several leading roles at the Odyssey Theatre, and her one-woman (comedic) show based on the true story of her Native American vision quest (where she spent 4 days with no food or water alone on a mountain) played to sold-out audiences. Stephanie moved to California from New York in 1992. Here she began a semi-annual practice of solitary camping experiences that have had a profound influence on her and led her to a desire to speak with someone about these experiences. She first met Shinzen Young at a meditation retreat at the Vipassana Support Institute. He mentored her in meditation practice and, with her signature joyful and good humored approach, she taught him how to juggle. In 2007 Stephanie founded the nonprofit, Mindfulness Arts, through which she has offered mindfulness programs for the local community, in addition to audio and video recordings of her teachings, and interviews with other respected teachers, all offered at no cost to the recipient. Join us with this wise and joyful teacher!

Contemporary Dance Company at The Odyssey provided thoughts on the following 10 constant things in dance. life and business: No matter how loudly or clearly you think you are communicating, not everyone will hear you or understand you. Everyone has their “crazy” moments, and you are allowed to have those. Life is messy. Life is imperfect. Fear can appear very real. Going against the grain isn’t easy. Sometimes you are responsible for causing the mess, and sometimes others cause it around you, and you can’t always control that. It is important to have release. You can’t always predict interruptions. There is a race against time so get going on your mission and what it is you are called to do.
