Dennis is joined via Zoom and telephone by writer to talk about his new book It Seemed Like A Bad Idea At The Time: The Worst TV Shows In History And Other Things I Wrote. The book attempts to answer the question, "How did this project happen?" about such so-bad-it's-delicious shows like The Star Wars Holiday Special, The Brady Bunch Variety Hour, The Paul Lynde Halloween Special as well as the feature films Can't Stop The Music and Ice Pirates. Bruce shares stories about working with Florence Henderson and Robert Reed on The Brady Bunch Variety Hour and reveals the famous socialite who was the Number 2 choice for "Fake Jan" on the show. Bruce, who was adopted as a baby, also shares the story of how, just in the last four years, DNA testing led him to discover a whole new birth family who have become a big part of his life. Other topics include: dealing with the Mormon elders while writing for Donny and Marie, what is was like to work with such 70's TV icons like Bob Hope, Robert Urich, Paul Lynde, Rip Taylor and Sid and Marty Krofft, why he he's happy to host benefits, the secret to his career longevity and the pact that he made to himself early in his career that "no one day should be like the other day."

Don't have a cow, man - it's another episode of Altmania right on schedule. We're joined by a returning favorite, a writer we both admire, Peter Raleigh! He steps into the pen with us to check out Alan Rudolph's second film with Zalman King (happy Zalmanuary to those that celebrate). It's the horror sci-fi eco-thriller ENDANGERED SPECIES - we get into X-Files talk, Twin Peaks, 1982 horror, cattle mutilations, aliens, the CIA, other government ops, Gary Larson, Cow Tools, Robert Urich being a weird sex freak in the movie. So much to enjoy on this episode, and the movie is pretty cool, too! HERE'S A LINK to a nice version you can watch... Matt & Todd discuss their fondness for the critical and commercial flop Turk 182. Sure this movie has its problems and plot holes, but it's still a fun little film. It has excellent performances by Timothy Hutton and Robert Culp. Also starring Robert Urich, Peter Boyle, and Kim Cattrall. Directed by Bob Clark.

Robert B. Parker (1932-2010), in conversation with Richard Wolinsky and Richard A. Lupoff, recorded June 13, 1992 while on tour for the Spenser novel, “Double Deuce.” Mystery and suspense author Robert B. Parker died at the age of 77 on January 18, 2010. His career encompassed 38 novels in his popular Spenser detective series during his life, with another three published posthumously, plus nine novels in the Jesse Stone series, four in the Cole and Hitch series, six in the Sonny Randall series, nine other novels, and four books of non-fiction. There were two Probabilities interviews with Robert B. Parker. The first time, co-hosted with Lawrence Davidson, was recorded in Parker's hotel room in the spring of 1981. At the time he'd just switched publishers and with Looking for Rachel Wallace and then Early Autumn, he was finally having success as an author. His success would explode exponentially over the next eleven years, and by the time of this interview. Robert Parker had written an additional ten Spenser novels, the TV series Spencer for Hire starring Robert Urich had run for three seasons, and a spin-off, A Man Called Hawk had had a 13 episode run. In addition, he'd completed an unfinished Philip Marlowe novel by Raymond Chandler, and followed that up with a sequel. Four Robert Urich Spenser filmswere produced after the interview was recorded, each based on a different Spenser novel by Parker. Three Spenser TV movies, based on three other novels with Joe Mantagna as Spenser ran from 1999 to 2001. A 2020 Netflix film with Mark Wahlberg, Spencer: Confidential, was based on a Spenser novel written by another author, Ace Atkins, who continued the series. In the interview, Robert Parker insists he won't start other series. In fact, of course, he did. The Sonny Randall series, featuring a female former cop turned private eye; the Cole & Hitch series of western detective novels, and the Jesse Stone series, featuring the police chief of a small town in Massachusetts. There have also been nine made for television films starting Tom Selleck as Jesse Stone. This interview was digitized, remastered and re-edited in January 2024 by Richard Wolinsky. The post Robert B. Parker (1932-2010), The Spenser novels, 1992 appeared first on KPFA.

This week on It Was a Thing on TV we celebrate Halloween like only we can. First, while not spooky in any way, Child's Play shares its name with a well-known horror movie franchise from later in the 80s. Besides being Bill Cullen's last show with Mark Goodson, it may be better known for being replaced by the game which typified the 80s, Press Your Luck. Then, in 1984, the same year horror master Wes Craven gave us "A Nightmare on Elm Street" he directed this ABC TV Movie starring Robert Urich, Joanna Cassidy, and Erica Kane herself Susan Lucci. In this made-for, Susan plays a devilish dame who tries to tempt ol' Spenser for Hire with power if he can just join this hot country club that just about everyone at his company works for. Avast, ye space mateys! Con and Dan haul anchor and set sail for the 80s yet again for a slice of semi-spoof space operatics in the form of The Ice Pirates (1984), which stars Robert Urich, Mary Crosby, Michael D. Roberts and features early appearances from Anjelica Houston and Ron Perlman. Set in another galaxy far, far away, where water has become a rare commodity, the film starts out as a heist caper, then takes a weird left-turn into castration and slavery before ending with a battle in a time warp on the way to finding a fabled water-rich planet. It has lasers and robots, but also knee boots, chain mail, cutlasses and an alarming amount of swinging on ropes. Not to mention something called 'space herpes'. But is it still entertaining when you're no longer 10 years old? Find out! Follow us on Threads, Facebook, Instagram and maybe Twitter, if it's still functioning. In 1987, ABC celebrated Independence Day by combining an evening of variety with a rally for literacy. Oprah and Robert Urich host from St. Louis as the likes of Suzanne Somers, Yakov Smirnoff, Barbara Mandell, Atlantic Starr, and a choir of 500 singers entertain from across the country. In between, filmed segments show the different ways America celebrates and provide testimonials from adults who've recently learned to read. If that weren't enough, the wife of the vice president makes an appearance! Rick and Mike break it all down and reveal a little of Rick's carny past. #podcast #tv #retrotv #seventies #eighties #abc #oprah #roberturich #july4 #independenceday #america #literacy

This is special. This is really effin' cool. I got to speak with the legendary E. Duke Vincent. He was Aaron Spelling's producing partner. Together, they re-shaped the landscape of television. Duke produced Vegas, Dynasty, 90210, Melrose Place, and dozens of other iconic television projects. We discuss working with Carl Reiner, Shannon Doherty, Heather Locklear, and the late, great Robert Urich. He reveals what it was like to work with Lucille Ball and which TV show ended up being his favorite. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Super Bowls are a time for leaders to step up. And for heroes to me made. But they're not real heroes. They're football players. And most of them are not real heroes. But a generation ago, there was a real hero playing in the Super Bowl. A true legend. And that legend was established the moment he stepped back on an NFL field. And was elevated after he made it to the Super Bowl. And after he won FOUR of them. Against all odds, he became the only purple heart recipient in history to win a Super Bowl. And the only one to win FOUR! For more than two years, he drove himself. Little by little he overcame obstacles and fought his way back. He not only made the Pittsburgh Steelers, but also eventually became a starting running back on a team that won four Super Bowls and became the greatest football team of the 20th century. The hard lessons Rocky Bleier (@RockyBleier) learned early in his life that helped him overcome adversity and reach his goals, have paid off after football. These lessons are seen between the lines in the popular book on his life, "Fighting Back" and on stages of speaking appearances around the country. Rocky Bleier is a true hero. A true champion. Not just a Super Bowl champion. But a champion for veterans. A champion for America. And, now, a champion for independents everywhere. He's leading an effort in his home state of Pennsylvania to end the ridiculous and un-American closed primaries. And continuing to inspire millions. Welcome to a conversation with a true champion. Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues Bookwaves Vanessa Veselka, whose latest novel is “The Great Offshore Grounds,” in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky. “The Great Offshore Grounds” is an epic novel about two sisters on a quest to find themselves during the upheavals of the current era. It's a detailed examination of feminism, of lives lived on the edge, and of life in the parts of America we hear little about. Vanessa Veselka's first novel, “Zazen,” has just been reissued by Vintage. Published by a small press over a decade ago, it looks at the travails of young adults set against the backdrop of an ever-increasing political violence in America. Both novels are available in trade paperback. Vanessa Veselka, the daughter of journalist Linda Ellerbee, left home at the age of fifteen and early in her life lived the life of a homeless vagabond, eventually becoming a professional musician in the Pacific Northwest, a union organizer, and a writer of fiction. Complete 51-minute interview. Bookwaves Robert B. Parker (1932-2010) is known today as one of the most important writers of detective fiction during the final quarter of the 20th Century. His wise cracking Boston private eye, Spenser, Spenser's sidekick Hawk, and girlfriend Susan Silverman have become iconic figures. When Parker died at the age of 77 in 2010, 38 Spenser novels had been published. Two more came out posthumously, and a third was completed by his agent. Novelist Ace Atkins has now written nine more Spenser novels. The series Spenser for Hire, starring Robert Urich and Avery Brooks ran for three seasons, and Brooks had a spin-off that ran for half a season, A Man Called Hawk. Several television movies were also made from Parker's Spenser books, the most recent, Spenser Confidential, is actually based on one of Ace Atkins' Spenser novels. This interview hosted by Richard Wolinaky and Lawrence Davidson, was recorded in the spring of 1981 while Robert B. Parker was on tour for his novel, Early Autumn, and marked the first Probabilities interview with a mystery writer. His career hadn't advanced under his first publisher, Houghton-Mifflin, and he switched to Delacorte, and Parker's audience began to grow. This was his seventh Spenser novel, and his eighth over all (Wilderness had come out late in 1980 and Looking for Rachel Wallace was his first under the new contract. At the time of the interview, his first five novels were all out of print in paperback. Though he says in the interview his detective fiction would be limited to the Spenser series, eventually he branched out to write another series of nine books featuring Jesse Stone, a former LAPD detective who becomes the police chief in a small New Enngland town, and six novels featuring Sunny Randall, a female detective. Eventually there was some crossover between the three series. Along the way, he also wrote a handful of westerns, the Cole and Hitch series, and two books featuring Raymond Chandler's detective, Philip Marlow. When Parker died in 2010 of a sudden heart attack, the family decided to let other writers continue the Spenser, Stone and western series, which go on to this day. Complete 40-minute Interview. Vega$ is a crime drama show that aired from September 20, 1978 to June 3, 1981. It stars charming but unlucky-in-casting Robert Urich as a capable private detective named Dan Tanna. Tanna must dive into the murky, neon-stained waters of Sin City itself as part of his work.In "The Macho Murders," which aired on November 28, 1979, Tanna is pulled into an investigation into a crusading feminist, after a sleazy leader of the local sex trade is found murdered. The episode also features Greg Morris, Bart Braverman, Phyllis Davis, and Academy Award winner Shelly Winters.Listen to Áine and Kevin roll the dice on political ads, the ups and downs of Urich's career, and Benson.Follow us on the usual social media suspects:FacebookTwitterInstagramAnd send your revolutionary feminist manifestos to mysterytomepodcast@gmail.com.Mystery to Me is a production of Mystery Sheet LLC.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Ice Pirates is a 1984 American comic science fiction film directed by Stewart Raffill, who co-wrote the screenplay with Krull writer Stanford Sherman. The film stars Robert Urich, Mary Crosby and Michael D. Roberts; other notable featured actors are Anjelica Huston, Ron Perlman, Bruce Vilanch, John Carradine and former football player John Matuszak. The film was made at MGM, then under David Begelman, with John Foreman as producer. It was originally called The Water Planet and had a $20 million budget. However, as MGM was in financial difficulty, its bankers put a limit of $8 million on all films. Raffill said he would have to rewrite it and make it more comic, and they agreed. Rafill and Foreman said pirate movies like The Crimson Pirate were the main inspiration and they deliberately did not watch Star Wars. This was Trent's pick. Trent had not watched the movie since it's literal release in 1984 when he was 13 years old. Needless to say, it wasn't the same viewing experience this time around... Originally recorded 6/8/22 After a Robert Urich induced hiatus the boys are back with another episode of SlurpToast goodness. The countdown to SDCC begins in earnest with this episode, but that wasn't all that was discussed. There was also: Stephe still hasn't seen Dr. Strange Ms. Marvel Black Adam Thor Thoughts on things being woke Toxic fandom Glorious Trash Black Samurai The mid-career films of Sylvester Stallone Donna Pescow and the one-named female-driven sitcoms of the 70s Lumber jokes Game of Thrones The possibility of a Dennis Miller bobblehead...babe Then we played a rousing game of "What's on Your Desk?" Dr. Zaius for the win.

Now that all the 2021 lists are over, and the ReFlicktions for last month have been ReFlickted, its time to finally move forward with new lists, new topics, and old movies to discuss! In honor of this year's NFL Draft, which just happened and to which likely 2 of the 3 Deucecasters (Dave, Mikey, Dr Earl) have no idea who was #1 (Minka Kelly, maybe?), it's time to talk a little football acting. First up, a little May the Fourth Be With You chitchat, then the return of The Rotten Tomatoes Game (and the first mention of Knute Rocke in 531 eps), then, this week's Top Five... Football Players (college and pro) who turned to acting. Some cameo roles (as in, why Brett Favre is in Miami) and Bernie Casey gets a nod and a few names Rock multiple lists and even Burt Reynolds shows up. Plus... both Robert Urich and John Metuszak might be making their debut mentions. Maybe. Unclear.
My old high school friend Ted Craig stops by to watch Ice Pirates with us! Ice Pirates is pretty much the nail in the 1980s sci-fi adventure films. It just made it under the radar in 1984, making its budget back. A year later, it's likely to have been a PG-13 film and because of that, a huge flop. Ice Pirates' budget was cut in half during production and rewritten as a comedy. It stars the late great Robert Urich, with a scene stealing segment featuring legendary writer/raconteur Bruce Vilanch and a troupe of Amazons! Or is it a gaggle of Amazons when they're with someone as witty as Bruce Vilanch? It's a movie that features Space Herpes, Castrated Slaves, spandex galore, and Angelica Huston wearing rebar! If you want to let us know what you thought about Ice Pirates, or you have a movie you think we should watch, let us know. Singing since he was a child, Mark Preston took every opportunity he could to sing for those who would listen and those who believed in his talent. Joining the Air Force was Mark's first stop on his way to being a top performer. His talent earned him accolades when he was selected as the Air Force's finest vocalist of 1975, and then toured with Tops in Blue. This elite group is made up of the Air Force's top 20, most versatile entertainers. During his time in the Air Force, Mark was awarded the American Spirit Honor Medal as well as the Air Force Commendation Medal. Country Music Hall of Famer Tennessee Ernie Ford so aptly put it, "Cock your pistols, there will be no stopping this young man", and there hasn't been. From his string of impressive performances at one of Los Angeles' oldest clubs, The Horn, Mark decided to make his next career move to Las Vegas. Mark Preston became a featured performer at The Dunes, The Silverbird, The Marina and The Sahara hotels. Preston also performed on Harrah's stage in Reno and in Lake Tahoe. Variety magazine dubbed him "one of the finest entertainers in show business". With several appearances on the hit series Vega$, as well as being the stand-in and photo double for the show's star, Robert Urich, Mark went on to do guest appearances on several network specials. Again, none of this went unnoticed as Mark would find himself moving again for another opportunity to expand his already growing career. Because of his acting on television and his singing, the Indiana native was asked to co-host The Bob Braun Show, a syndicated variety show originating in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mark proved his versatility when he joined the Braun Show. While he was performing on the Bob Braun Show, he was asked to open for the First Lady of Comedy, Phyllis Diller. "I love to refer to Mark Preston as my protégé", said Ms. Diller. "He has one of the strongest, most beautiful voices I have ever heard. He really gets to an audience. He sings, acts, emotes, is handsome...everything". Mark's unique talent preceded him again, and he was asked to join the world famous recording group, 'The Lettermen'. Mark accepted and he performed for a total of 11 years with the group. During that time, the group recorded several albums and CDs. There was a campaign to put forward the group's most recent recording "New Directions 2010" with the Les Brown Jr. Orchestra, for 3 Grammy nominations. In 2001, the Lettermen were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall Of Fame and in early 2020, the group was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. Mark has performed on over 110 different cruise ship and his a continued headline for all of the premier cruise lines and lets us know how cruising is back.
'1883,' or 'Macho Knots Landing," has some moments of greatness that are weighed down by a repetitive script, a narration that simply does not work, and a lead performance that has shades of Robert Urich in 'Lonesome Dove.'
Enjoy Pi Day with Jovial Jay and Shua as they take the idea completely out of context and talk about Private Investigators of 80s TV. It's a great episode to listen to 3.14 times! There are many ways to celebrate Pi Day on March 14. Whether you make a nice round birthday cake for Albert Einstein or share all kinds of round food with your friends, we think you'll have fun watching 80's TV shows about Private Investigators. It was an interesting take on the Dark Knight with a detective story and a surprising message of hope by the end. Enjoy TV! What is Pi? A delicious dessert? A mathematical constant? Well, yeah. But to recognize this year's March 14, with different kinds of P.I.s; private investigators of the 80's. Magnum PI pushed Tom Selleck to the top of fame when he starred as Thomas Magnum, private investigator staying in the mansion of Robin Masters and tormenting the butler, Higgins. All this while solving crimes while driving around in a fancy car. 1984's Riptide starred Perry King as Cody Allen and solved mysteries with his friends Nick and Boz, while driving around in a fancy car. Simon and Simon were two brothers who, while opposite in a lot of ways, were great at solving mysteries and driving around in a variety of fancy cars. Hardcastle and McCormick premiered in 1983 and starred the legendary Brian Keith as Judge Hardcastle who is trying to catch a bunch of criminals who escaped conviction with the help of a car thief named McCormick, who drives around in a stolen fancy car. Hunter set the stage for overly-macho guys who carry big guns, but sometimes have a female partner. Rick Hunter and his partner DeeDee McCall help to save Los Angeles, but don't always have the luxury of a fancy car. Spenser for Hire showed us that the great Robert Urich as Spenser, saving the day in Boston with his reliable and not yet Star Trekified Avery Brooks, while driving around in a fancy Mustang car. And this just scratches the surface. In our head cannon, they were all connected and worked for Angela Lansbury's Jessica Fletcher. What else can you do on Pi Day? How about some Pi-kus? Or maybe have a Pi-arty? Serve some Pi-themed food like Pi-napple or Pi-stachios. Whatever you do, have 3.14 times the fun on this fun Monday! Are you celebrating Pi Day? Do you have a crime that needs investigating? Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to podcast@enjoystuff.com

Robert B. This interview, hosted by Richard Wolinaky and Lawrence Davidson, was recorded in the spring of 1981 while Robert B. The recording was digitized, remastered and re-edited in November 2021. The post The Probabilities Archive: Robert B. Parker (1932-2010), the early Spenser novels, 1981 appeared first on KPFA.

Actor and Stuntman Tom Morga stops by to talk Friday the 13th part 5, Halloween 4, Chainsaw Massacre 2, and much much more. Tom Has acted alongside all the greats. Don't take my word for it. Read his IMDB. Stuntman, stunt coordinator, and actor Thomas Alvin Morga was born in Burbank, California. While in college, Morga worked as a smoke jumper stationed in Missoula, Montana between 1969 and 1974. It was Tom's work as a smoke jumper that led to his first television appearance as himself in the documentary series Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom (1963) in which he saved a wild buffalo herd from a forest fire. Morga first began performing stunts in films and TV shows in the mid-1970's. Among the notable actors who Tom has doubled for throughout his career are Jeff Goldblum, James Coburn, John Travolta, Leonard Nimoy, James Keach, Patrick Duffy, Jonathan Frakes, Tim Robbins, Robert Urich, Bruce Boxleitner, Keith Carradine, Harold Ramis, and Steve Railsback. Moreover, Morga has portrayed an eclectic array of different aliens as well as has doubled for an assortment of actors in various "Star Trek" movies and TV series. A member of the Stuntmen's Association of Motion Pictures since 1982, Tom was the recipient of a well-earned Lifetime Membership Award from the Stuntmen's Association in 2012. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chronicleshistory/support

Ok, I’m assuming the majority of people have Netflix, except of course our Amish listeners, Caleb and Elvesta, who can’t listen because they don’t have electricity, and spend their time baking Shoe Fly Pie. I also assume if you have Netflix you have finished, or are currently watching Tiger King and his nemesis the evil queen of the uncomfortable laugh, Carole Baskins. And if you don’t know what Tiger King is, we can’t be friends so don’t call me looking for toilet tissue and Purell. But if you want to watch a movie, I’ve got one for you. Spencer Confidential. Now if you weren’t watching TV in the 80’s the name Spencer probably doesn’t ring a bell. This was a TV show that was on from 1985 to 1988 and it starred Robert Urich as Spencer and his sidekick Hawk, played by Avery Brooks. Spencer is a Boston Cop who left the force to become a PI. Each week he solved a murder case with the help of Hawk who worked both sides of the law and always had Spencer’s back. The character is based on books by Robert B. Parker. There are over 40 books and I have read them all, so it is safe to call me fan. When I heard Netflix and Spencer I was skeptical but once I knew Mark Wahlberg was playing him I was good to go. I expected some changes but the biggest was Hawk. When Avery Brooks played Hawk he was the epitome of cool, a snappy dresser, only drank champagne, and worked mostly as a hired killer. Winston Duke played him completely different. Spencer has been in prison for a few years for beating up his Chief when he was a cop. Now he is out and plans to move to Arizona and drive a truck. As soon as he gets out of prison his old Chief is murdered and another cop is set up to look like he did it. But Spencer knows better and sets out to prove it. This leads to a lot of action, including a machete wielding Dominican gang. You can always depend on Mark Wahlberg, especially if the movie is set in Boston where he lets his natural accent go crazy. Alan Arkin, who plays Henry, Spencer’s old boxing coach, does not get nearly enough to do, but when he is in a scene, he steals it. Iliza Shelseinger plays Spencer’s crazy psycho girlfriend Cissy, and trust me, she steals a few scenes herself. Its 111 minutes, Rated R for violence and a bunch of language, with some sexual content but not much, but the language is much. But let’s be honest, curse words sound different with a thick Boston accent. If you are a Spence fan you will love it. Wahlberg is nothing like the late great Robert Urich, but he is Mark Wahlberg and it works. Fast paste action, fast moving, great dialog. You won’t be disappointed, I wasn’t. It also leaves room for a sequel, which doesn’t make me mad. My Score: As a big Spencer fan, a full 6 Pack.
Welcome to hell. Literally. We’d love to say that this episode is the first of the new season, but seeing as how we’re all grounded until summer, this is going to be a one-off until Sam can invite his friends over without risk of certain death. Luckily, this one is a great one: Jeff Nelson, camp impresario and Scream Factory co-founder, talks with Sam about INVITATION TO HELL, a Wes Craven-directed, Robert Urich-starring made-for-TV effort that features Susan Lucci as the devil. Don’t be shocked — this one comes from 1984, making it our first TV movie to fall outside of the 1970s. That Sam Pancake is VERSATILE! It was bound to happen sooner or later and a collision of streaming coincidence allowed us to get this done in our first hundred episodes. Matt is an old aficionado of the Robert B. Parker Spenser novels, a fan of the television series Spenser: For Hire, and he has strong opinions about the made-for-TV Spenser movies from the 90s and early aughts. He’s going into the 2020 Netflix offering, Spenser Confidential, with a keenly hewn fandom and a careful critical mind. Trevor hadn’t consumed ANY Spenser properties when he finally sat down and socially distanced himself with Spenser Confidential. But after watching the new film with Mark Wahlberg, Winston Duke, and Iliza Shlesinger Trevor did his homework and read some Robert B. Parker to beef up for the episode. The streaming gods did also smile upon Matt and Trevor, bestowing them with an unexpected and very welcome gift- three seasons of Spenser: For Hire on ImdbTV, a free-with-commercials service. So in this episode the guys talk about Robert B. Parker’s work, Spenser: For Hire the series, and the dessert is a no-spoiler discussion of the latest R-Rated action comedy that debuted on the Netflix charts and still is hanging in there several weeks later. Folks, a take on Parker’s Spenser is one we really wanted to do. It was intended mostly to be a larf, and something to check off the Nighthawks’ bucket list. But in these times, when we’re stuck inside and have nothing better but to watch a movie, the Nighthawks would like to encourage you to reach out and try something new. Maybe one of the Spenser properties is for you. Maybe they aren’t. We recorded this episode with you folks in mind, hoping to give you the context needed to decide if a few seasons of Robert Urich and Avery Brooks are worth your time (I mean…how could that not be worth your time?) Maybe a few hours watching Alan Arkin be a crotchety fart is in your wheelhouse (again, whose wheelhouse is that NOT in?) Hunker down. Stay healthy. We are always with you in the Nighthawks Diner. In the meantime… episode 100 is fast approaching, and the recent coronavirus caused COVID-19 global pandemic has put a hitch in how we were planning to handle the content of that episode. With that being said we’ve resumed appropriately distant production, and hope to bring you a really special 100th episode very soon.
What do you get when a meteor crash lands off the coast of Africa and then gets hit by a bulldozer? This week we talk 1974 made-for-tv movie KILLDOZER! When one of their bulldozers becomes sentient, six-man construction crew played by Clint Walker, Carl Betz, Neville Brand, James Wainwright, James A. Watson Jr. and Robert Urich have to fight(or just sort of lazily move around) for their lives to try and survive. Featuring some of the most boring, flat characters and a questionable timeline Killdozer is just kind-of meh!

James will soon be seen opposite Mark Wahlberg in Wonderland—the forthcoming Netflix feature, directed by Peter Berg, based on Robert B. Parker’s Wonderland—and the upcoming independent features Designed to Kill and The Banker. Topics include shooting Wonderland on location in Boston, and how Wahlberg’s Spenser compares that of Robert Urich in the Spenser: For Hire television series. Carolyn McCormick was born in Midland, Texas and grew up in Houston where she went to The Kinkaid School. Upon graduating she went to Williams College where she majored in theatre and graduated with honors after directing and translating Jean Paul Sartre’s No Exit for her senior thesis. For the next four years she lived in San Francisco getting her masters degree in acting at the American Conservatory Theatre. After two years as a student she joined the main stage acting company. Her first break in film was playing Jimmy Stewart’s daughter in The Late Christoper Beane but sadly the film was shelved after Carol Burnett backed out of the film for medical reasons. Her next break was a film in Germany with Dennis Quaid and Lou Gosset JR. directed by Wolfgang Peterson, Enemy Mine. After that she joined the cast of Spenser for Hire in Boston with Robert Urich. When that show ended she hit the road with her soon to be husband Byron Jennings working all over the country doing plays across the country from the Denver Center to Baltimore’s Center Stage, Seattle Rep, The Old Globe in San Diego and Yale in New Haven, before settling down in New York city to start her family. In the early 90’s she began working on Law and Order as the shrink Dr. Olivet and has played that role in every spinoff of that show over the past few decades. During that period she has relocated to LA a few times for various projects including the TV series Cracker and a TNT original film called You Know My Name with Sam Elliot, as well as Minuet Riker on Star Trek the Next Generation. Most of her time is spent in New York City and when she is not working in film and television she is performing in theatre on and off broadway and has an active voice over career doing myriad political spots, Ken Burns documentaries and audio books, including the Hunger Games series.

Rocky Bleier graduated from University of Notre Dame in 1968 with a degree in business management, in addition to starring in football. After his rookie season, Bleier was drafted into the army, and fought in the Vietnam War. On August 20, 1969, Bleier's platoon was ambushed and Bleier was wounded in his left thigh. While he was down, a grenade sent many pieces of shrapnel into his right leg. Bleier's struggle to recover from his injuries was dramatized in the 1980 film Fighting Back starring Robert Urich as Bleier and Art Carney as Art Rooney. Bleier would play sparingly from 1971 to 1973 as upon his return he couldn't walk without being in pain, and he weighed only 180 pounds. Chuck Noll, the Pittsburgh Steelers coach, waived him on two occasions, but Bleier would always regain a spot on the roster. An offseason training regimen brought Bleier back to 212 pounds in the summer of 1974. From that point in time, he would be in the Steelers' starting lineup. In addition to being a great lead blocker, Bleier was the second of the Steelers' rushing weapons, (Franco Harris was the primary back,) but was effective nonetheless at both blocking and rushing. In 1976, both Harris and Bleier rushed for over 1,000 yards. Bleier played in all four Steeler Super Bowl victories, and caught the touchdown pass from Terry Bradshaw that gave Pittsburgh a lead it would never surrender in Super Bowl XIII.
Tysto returns to talk Bunco (1977) a cop show starring Robert Urich and Tom Selleck as two useless cops who do absolutely nothing and leave most of the work to a female cop while they sit around. Yet they are treated as though they are good at their jobs. It's not a parody.
Pappy, Stevie and Josh think back on the life and times of Papa John then get into the real stuff. Ice Pirates, from 1984. ********************* In the far future water is the most valuable substance. Two space pirates are captured, sold to a princess, and recruited to help her find her father who disappeared when he found information dangerous to the rulers. A real Space Opera with sword fights, explosions, fighting robots, monsters, bar fights and time warps. In this undistinguished parody of the sci fi genre, Robert Urich is Jason who leads a band of pirates in redistributing the wealth of the few to the coffers of the needy. He also joins up with Princess Karina Mary Crosby in searching for her father and a possible source of water in the next galaxy. Meant to be a campy romp through the sci fi genre, the film stops short of achieving a goal that should have been effortless.
