What a Mamdani Win Would Mean for Local Communities**: As the mayoral race heats up, we examine how a Mamdani administration would impact working-class families in New York City, with a focus on affordable housing, policy prescriptions, and the potential shift in national politics, featuring insights from Laura Flanders and journalists working around the country for this month's Meet the BIPOC Press. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to LauraFlanders.org/donateDescription:  Wherever you are in the county, you've probably heard the name “Zohran Mamdani”. New York City's mayoral race is a national story, and it's hard to overstate the significance of the leading candidate in this moment. If elected, Mamdani would become the first Muslim-American and only the second Democratic Socialist Mayor of the largest city in the U.S. His victory, on a promise to make New York affordable for working people, would have implications for politics everywhere. The race is already garnering both excitement and anxiety. President Trump is threatening to withhold federal funding for New York City if Mamdani wins. From Chicago to Dearborn, Michigan, journalists are watching. In this installment of “Meet the BIPOC Press”, Laura Flanders speaks with Felipe De La Hoz, investigative immigration and policy reporter whose work has been featured in The Intercept, The Washington Post, New York Mag and The Nation; Osama Siblani, publisher and founder of The Arab American News, the largest Arab American newspaper in the U.S., and Asha Ransby-Sporn, organizer and writer for In These Times and co-founder of Black Youth Project 100, where she led the group's national organizing program. In this episode, Zach Shaw and Steve Lorenz break down the Michigan football team's 31-20 win over Michigan State, what the Wolverines showed in the game, and what it means for the rivalry moving forward. They open with a look at the offense, which was as run-dominant as Michigan has been all season. They discuss the run game's success, especially in the second half, as well as the shortcomings on multiple fronts in the passing game. In the second half of the episode, they look at Michigan's defense, which was dominant for most of the game, saw key standout players, but also had a couple drives where things weren't as sharp. They close the episode with a look at the state of the in-state rivalry, where Michigan State goes from here after another rivalry loss and an 0-5 start in Big Ten play and what it all means for Michigan. Top Stories for October 28th Publish Date: October 28th From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Tuesday, October 28th and Happy Birthday to Julia Roberts I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. SPARC, Motel to Home help homeless single-parent families get back into housing E-SPLOST headlines countywide ballot — but faces challenges Gwinnett police chief pushes back in Peachtree Corners debate All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: KIA Mall Of Georgia STORY 1: SPARC, Motel to Home help homeless single-parent families get back into housing Life hit Faith Busano like a freight train. “The day we moved into our last apartment, I lost my job,” she said. Originally from California, Faith, 32, had bounced from Michigan to Georgia, trying to find stability for herself and her two daughters, 3-year-old Love and 13-year-old Harmoni. But things kept falling apart. Family couldn’t help. The apartment didn’t work out. And when the job disappeared, so did their home. They ended up in an extended-stay motel—what was supposed to be a temporary fix. But weeks turned into months, and the motel became a trap. Her toddler’s energy was endless, her teen was struggling with mental health, and Faith herself was barely holding on. She worked customer service, drove for DoorDash, styled hair—anything to scrape by. But the grind was relentless. Then, one day, a flier changed everything. The motel was handing out groceries, and someone slipped her information about SPARC’s Motel to Home program. It felt like a lifeline. SPARC, led by Joy Monroe, helps families like Faith’s escape the cycle of extended-stay living. The program covers deposits, first month’s rent, and helps families transition into stable housing. But it’s not easy—there are requirements, and families have to actively work toward qualifying. Faith did the work. She found an apartment within her budget, got approved, and finally moved in. Monroe, who started SPARC to support single moms like herself, knows the struggle all too well. Faith is still rebuilding—working toward her medical assistant certification, dreaming of opening her own business someday. But for now, she’s just grateful to have a place to call home. STORY 2: E-SPLOST headlines countywide ballot — but faces challenges This fall, Gwinnett voters have plenty to decide, but nothing’s stirring the pot quite like the E-SPLOST referendum. Here’s the deal: Gwinnett County Public Schools and Buford City Schools want to extend the 1% sales tax for another six years, aiming to rake in $1.47 billion—most of it ($1.44 billion) for GCPS. The money would go toward maintaining aging schools (average age: 24 years), fixing roofs, replacing HVAC systems, and even funding a new career and technical education center. Safety upgrades and Chromebooks? Also on the list. Supporters say it’s essential. Opponents? They’re calling out wasteful spending—like a $7 million church purchase with no clear plan. Turnout’s been dismal so far—just 1.7% of voters have shown up. Maybe it’s the confusion of needing multiple ballots in some areas. Or maybe people just aren’t paying attention. Either way, the stakes are high. STORY 3: Gwinnett police chief pushes back in Peachtree Corners debate Nancy McGregor doesn’t see the point. The Peachtree Corners resident has been a supporter of the Gwinnett County Police Department for years, and after attending a community meeting with Police Chief J.D. McClure, she’s even more convinced: the city doesn’t need its own police force. “When you’ve got an elite department like Gwinnett’s—with their training, resources, and expertise—why would we try to replicate that?” McGregor said. The meeting, held at Peachtree Corners Baptist Church, was the first time residents heard directly from county police about the city’s proposal to break away and form its own department. McClure didn’t hold back. Crime in Peachtree Corners? Down across the board. Robberies dropped 40% this year, assaults 41%, and commercial burglaries a staggering 66%. But it’s not just about crime stats. McClure laid out what the city would lose: specialized units like SWAT, K9, and Behavioral Health, plus the county’s ability to surge officers during emergencies. Residents like Paul La Motte left the meeting impressed. “I’ve always been against the idea of a city police department, but now? I’m even more confident Gwinnett’s got this.” McGregor agreed. “Hearing their side just confirmed it for me. They’re doing a great job.” We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets STORY 4: Rotary joint manufacturer maierAMERICA marks 25 years in Gwinnett Back in 2000, Germany’s Christian Maier GmbH & Co. KG decided to plant roots in the U.S., and they picked Gwinnett County as their home base. Fast forward 25 years, and their subsidiary, maierAMERICA, is still here—thriving, growing, and making waves in the Norcross area. This week, the company celebrated two big milestones: 25 years in Gwinnett and 100 years since its parent company’s founding. The company’s growth has been impressive. Just last year, they tripled their space to 20,500 square feet. Gwinnett County Commission Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson marked the occasion with a proclamation, calling maierAMERICA’s success a testament to the county’s role as a hub for international business. German Consul General Melanie Moltmann and other officials echoed the sentiment, celebrating the deep ties between Germany and the U.S. STORY 5: Georgia Supreme Court upholds conviction from fatal DUI in Gwinnett Victor Allen Smith’s conviction is sticking. The Georgia Supreme Court unanimously upheld the 2023 verdict that found Smith, 59, guilty of killing 22-year-old Hugo Natanael Martinez while fleeing a state trooper in Gwinnett County. Smith, who was sentenced to life in prison, had argued that evidence about his 18-year license suspension unfairly swayed the jury. But the court didn’t buy it, ruling the evidence against him was overwhelming. Back in March 2022, Smith was clocked speeding over 80 mph on I-85—then hit 120 mph trying to outrun the trooper. Martinez, standing by his truck on the shoulder, sadly never stood a chance. Smith struck him, sending him over a retaining wall. STORY 6: ART BEAT: Nocross Gallery's 'Shapes' fundraiser features artists in a friendly bidding war The bidding’s still going strong at Norcross Gallery and Studios! Their annual fundraiser, “Norcross Shapes,” runs through Nov. 2 at 2 p.m., and it’s a must-see (and bid) event. This month-long auction, which kicked off Oct. 5, supports everything from artist programs and community outreach to high school exhibitions and ongoing classes. The best part? You can either outbid the competition or pay the “full price” to snag your favorite piece on the spot. The artwork is as diverse as it gets—paintings, pottery, jewelry, even gift baskets. And the stories behind the pieces? Just as colorful. This year’s auction has no size limits, so expect everything from tiny treasures to statement pieces. Swing by the gallery at 116 Carlyle Street in downtown Norcross, open Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Don’t miss it! STORY 7: Gladiators Legend: ECHL Hall of Famer Cam Brown Dies at 56 When the Gwinnett Gladiators needed a leader back in 2003, they found one in Cam Brown. Fresh out of retirement, the Canadian left winger joined the brand-new Duluth-based team, bringing grit, heart, and a lifetime of hockey experience. Over three seasons, he became the face of the franchise, leading them to a Kelly Cup Final and scoring the first goal in team history. On Sunday, fans and friends were devastated to learn Brown had passed away at just 56, reportedly in a motorcycle accident. Brown’s No. 44 jersey hangs in the rafters, a permanent reminder of his impact. He’s the only Gladiator in the ECHL Hall of Fame, a league he helped shape with 789 games, 206 goals, and 2,425 penalty minutes. Old school? Absolutely. But that’s what made him special. Brown leaves behind his wife, two children, and a legacy that stretches far beyond the rink. Tisdel break down the political double standard, what's really behind these mixed messages, and what Michigan parents and teachers need to know about the push to control classrooms from D.C. instead of empowering local schools.

A quiet Sunday turned into something else entirely. We kick things off with the Big Ten pulse check—Ohio State's defense looks nasty, disciplined, and deceptively complex, while Michigan's power run game still feels one note against an elite unit. Indiana's surprising charge raises a real question: are we watching a true new contender or a hot streak built on timing and grit? We dig into coaching impact, road-game confidence, and the thin margin between swagger and a trap. Then the night flips. A college party swells behind the house, cars creep onto the lawn, and a sick-to-your-stomach moment breaks out as the crowd surges into the yard. What follows is a case study in boundaries and tone: we ask, we wait, we de-escalate, and when it spikes again, we make the call. No theatrics, no heroics—just calm language, cool officers, and the party dissolving back to its side of the alley. It's part funny, part frustrating, and fully real life.We also take you on the road to a Dayton-area wedding where the dance floor never cools, late-night tracks get spicy, and the bride's joy becomes the best kind of chaos. In the quieter moments, we play with AI that turns our photos into Simpsons and Family Guy art—nostalgia in a click, proof that small creative toys can brighten a long day. And because comfort culture never sleeps, we drift into movies (Torque's underrated soundtrack and stunts, Depp's moody Sweeney Todd and Dark Shadows) and the most passionate debate of all: cereals. From Cinnamon Toast Crunch to the off-brand boxes you swear existed, we chase memories down every aisle. There's a final nudge on health and habits—less salt, more water, and a reminder that a second chance deserves a better routine. If you're here for sports, stories, tech toys, or just a laugh at midnight mayhem, you'll feel at home. If this ride hits, follow the show, share it with a friend, and drop us your wildest neighbor story or your Big Ten power ranking in the comments. One mother's plea and a judge's blueprint collide with a terrifying truth: the systems meant to protect people with serious mental illness—and the communities around them—often wait until harm is done. We bring Beverly Gille and Judge Milton L. Mack Jr. together to map how a 28-year struggle, from teen psychosis to homelessness and a mass stabbing in a Traverse City Walmart, reveals the exact points where policy, privacy, and practice failed. We walk through the pivotal transitions that matter most: when minors become adults and families lose access, when court orders lapse because of rigid renewal windows, and when police lack clear authority to transport someone to a crisis center before danger peaks. Judge Mack explains the shift toward assisted outpatient treatment, why recognizing lack of insight saves lives, and how proposed Michigan bills would empower families to file petitions, broaden who can testify, and end the “seven-day trap” that breaks continuity of care.Beverly's story grounds the policy in lived experience—adult foster care that worked until it didn't, ACT teams with uneven follow-through, and a release to the streets where legal access to potent cannabis accelerated psychosis. We connect outcomes to dollars and dignity: assisted outpatient treatment reduces hospitalizations, arrests, homelessness, and drug use, delivering better recovery and safer communities without demanding new budget lines. Most of all, we challenge a false choice: untreated illness is not liberty; treatment restores agency, safety, and community trust. If this conversation resonates, share it with someone who needs to hear it. Offense vs Michigan State Starts at 1:05 They watch games in Craig's garage but to be clear it's a very nice garage. This game means different things based on if you're from Michigan or not. This game is like "Jerry Springer: the Rivalry". Michigan went back to the 2023 "we can just run the ball and get away with a win" gameplan. 'Road Bryce' seems to be a real thing. Every time they show Jonathan Smith he looks like he doesn't want to be there. Should there be an ingrained hatred of Michigan if you're going to be the head coach at Michigan State? Bryce doesn't have a good game but both backs go for over 100 yards. Bryce looked great last week, what happened? Or is this just the case of a true freshman in a road environment again? Sprague and Guarnera had great games, El-Hadi maybe not so much? The pieces for the 2026 offensive line may already be in place. Let's talk about Semaj... We're mostly out on Semaj, do you bench him now for his own good? Jordan Marshall: runs through guys and runs through guys. The Crippen high snap was unfortunate. Can anyone play fullback better than Max Bredeson?  [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]  2. Defense vs Michigan State Starts at 59:04 We've been down on Wink but this was a good game for the defense. You can't take much on this based on the performance of the opposition. Chiles was awful in a vacuum, Michigan was not forcing his problems. Hillman had a really good game, he's been given a lot of criticism but this was a chaotically good game. Jimmy Rolder was a little bit of everywhere, he's a playmaker now. Derrick Moore is pretty good, he should start! Everything around the defensive tackle position is fine but we're used to a defense designed around great defensive tackles. Defensive backs should have as equal right to the ball as wide receivers.  3. Hot Takes, Game Theory, and Special Teams Starts at 1:26:57 Takes hotter than the bacteria and/or virus that really got up in Brian's business this week. Glue the hat and pants on, Michigan State's not getting the trophy back. Some of us don't think that guy was off-sides... or was he? The hold on Crippen is not even remotely a hold. If that's a hold then we need to talk about Jaishawn Barham. Why are we accepting a fair catch on the 20?? We are out on J.B. Brown as special teams coordinator. Hollenbeck had a nice game at least. Semaj gets run over by Goodwin?! Should they have taken a shot in the endzone before the end of the half?   4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac Starts at 1:51:10 Rutgers 27, Purdue 24 The Purdue QB catches his own pass and spectacularly hands the game over to Rutgers in dramatic fashion. Rutgers gets yards, not points. Purdue wins a game they probably shouldn't have. This game kind of saved Rutgers' season, they could potentially compete with Penn State for bowl eligibility.  Nebraska 28, Northwestern 21 Northwestern outgains Nebraska and Dylan Raiola was un-inspiring. That said, Raiola was still the better QB. Northwestern always seems to find the worst QB in the portal. Nebraska seems to think they can solve their offensive line problems with the portal but they can't.  Indiana 56, UCLA 6 There was a pick-six a minute into the game and that's all she wrote. Last year Indiana was a fun story, this year THEY'RE SCARY.  Washington 42, Illinois 25 Road Washington is a thing. The worst roughing the passer call we've ever seen is in this game. Could Oregon be a play-in for a playoff spot for Washington??  Oregon 21, Wisconsin 7 Wisconsin doesn't get shut out three games in a row! All things considered, the Wisconsin defense is playing their hearts out.  Iowa 41, Minnesota 3 Iowa had 274 total yards. How do you get 41 points on 274 total yards? It's Iowa. We need a Floyd of Rosedale pose on touchdowns in this game. Playoff Iowa??? No, that's silly.  MUSIC: "Chokkan Way"—Haku "My Girlfriend Doesn't Worry"—Jeffrey Lewis "Nausea"—Jeff Rosenstock “Across 110th Street”—JJ Johnson and his Orchestra

Tonya Kortekaas lives in Pontiac, Michigan, with her husband, Michael, of 11 years. She is the mother of three adult sons and a “bonus” mom to Michael's three children.Tonya spent most of her adult life as a stay-at-home mom of 3 growing boys and self-employed as a portrait photographer.  She felt that her most important mission in life was to raise her children and give them all the care and love they deserved.  She has been good at putting her family before her own needs, but the costs of that have been not caring for her mind and body as she should.  As her children have become adults and she has had more time to work on herself, she has entered into the full timeworking world and currently works for Oakland University.  She enjoys outdoor walks, kayaking, biking, watercolour painting and coffee in her free time. Tonya has struggled with her weight since her early 20s. She realizes that emotional eating and overindulging in sweets have been her issues.   She has tried countless diets, which have allowed her to lose weight but eventually gain it all back and more over the years.  At her annual physical exam in March of 2022, she was confronted with the highestweight of her lifetime at 349 lbs. and a BMI of 51.  Her blood pressure was soaring to a dangerous high, and her blood tests showed she was pre-diabetic.  She knew at that moment it was time for a significant change. Shewas sick of living life with this ongoing weight struggle and longed deeply to be a “normal” "-sized person.  Little did she know that change was going to lead her to an intermittent fasting lifestyle and complete freedom from her struggles with eating.  She's lost 155 lbs over 26 months of her weight loss journey. What does it really take to bring a crumbling historic building back to life—and turn it into a thriving, income-producing community space? In this episode, Brian Hamrick sits down with Brad Andrus, commercial real estate investor, broker, and developer behind the ambitious restoration of the Fine Arts Theater in Denton, Texas. Brad shares the full story: from its beginnings as an undertaker's shop in the early 1900s, to its heyday as a bustling single-screen theater, to decades of vacancy after fire damage—and now, its rebirth as a live performance, film, and event venue. You'll learn: The hidden challenges of historic renovations—from roof failures to unexpected structural issues. How federal and state historic tax credits can make or break the capital stack. Why city and community partnerships are essential in adaptive reuse projects. How to balance profitability with legacy-minded investing. The role of AI tools in Brad's real estate business and his new podcast Weeks Ahead AI. Whether you're passionate about historic preservation, curious about adaptive reuse, or an investor exploring creative real estate strategies, this conversation reveals the opportunities—and the pitfalls—of breathing new life into old buildings.

A craft cocktail bar with a ton of accolades (and appreciative fans) in Detroit's Midtown is closing.  In this in-depth conversation with one of the founding partners, Dr. Kevin Peterson, we get into why it's good to embrace new chapters.  Also, Peterson lines out how much time you have to come enjoy a final drink at what has been one of Michigan's best "garden level" bars. It's important, if you can, to try and give long-standing patrons time to say goodbye to the space they also shared.  Kevin is also the author of "Cocktail Theory," A ssensory approach to transcendent drinks. https://sfumatofragrances.com/products/cocktail-theory More on Castalia: https://www.castaliacocktails.com/ Feedback as always - dailydetroit -at- gmail -dot- com or leave a voicemail 313-789-3211.  Follow Daily Detroit on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/daily-detroit/id1220563942 Or sign up for our newsletter: https://www.dailydetroit.com/newsletter/
