Well hey friends. I'm trying to get back into the podcast fray and I always appreciate your ears and support. Starting in September, I'm gonna be riding roughshod across the rugged Ontario terrain with a great friend and an even greater music maker; Stephen Stanley. Wolfe Island-based singer-songwriter and guitarist Stephen Stanley may most immediately be known as a founding member, lead guitarist and vocalist with the acclaimed early 90's alt-rock band "The Lowest of the Low". Since those days, Stephen has gone on to release some of his finest music of all time with "The Stephen Stanley Band" and their new album, Before The Collapse Of The Hive (Wolfe Island Records), is a multi dimensional banger. It's an album brimming with raw, unflinching urgency, steadfast observation and soul-searching storytelling that highlights Stephen's immediate world: those he loves, and those he's lost. This was my second chat with Stephen and we had a lovely time. For tickets and times on our Ontario tour in September, go to https://graven.ca for more info. The Stephen Stanley Band's is happy to introduce their new album, Before The Collapse Of The Hive (Wolfe Island Records). It's an album brimming with raw, unflinching urgency, steadfast observation and soul-searching storytelling that highlights Stephen's immediate world: those he loves, and those he's lost.  Recording the album on on Wolfe Island became an integrated life experience. Start and stop times were not regimented. “Often, we'd go and play a set at the Hotel Wolfe Island (co-owned by album producer and album contributor, Hugh Christopher Brown) and recording would just take place around the timing of the show.” Except for Kate Fenner, Michael Blake and Ron Hawkins, outside of his band, everyone who played on the new record lives on Wolfe Island. A wonderful stable of players and singers, deeply affected the sound of this new work, produced again, by Hugh Christopher Brown. The Stephen Stanley Band's internationally acclaimed record, Jimmy & the Moon (2017), saw Stephen and his band going into the studio with a clutch of songs they had spent a long time pre-producing. Before The Collapse Of The Hive was very different. Due to long periods of time where no one could get together, six songs on this record were entirely new, starting off with acoustic guitar and vocals and building the songs from there. If Jimmy & the Moon was loosely written about Toronto and the changes the city has gone through in his time, this album looks deeper at our collective place in a world seemingly falling apart. It's a continued conversation between Stephen and his close friend and beloved radio enigma, Dave Bookman, whom Stephen shared the loss of, just prior to starting to work on these songs – two of which are in honour of that friendship and reflecting on the time spent finding the words for such an unexpected goodbye. “‘Before the Collapse of the Hive' – man, that title means so many different things to me as I write this. Some of which will be obvious, others which are mine alone. Lucy Treloar is the award winning author of Salt Creek and Wolfe Island. Today we're discussing her new novel Days of Innocence and Wonder Till is on the run from life, taking to the open road in a quest to keep moving, getting as far as possible from where she's been. It is the project of a lifetime, ever since Till's best friend was snatched off the street when they were young.  Driving far from Melbourne, inland and away from the familiar. Till doesn't know what she's looking for… Yet. When Till arrives in Wirowie she's immediately drawn to its quiet streets. Things start in a temporary way. Till squats in the abandoned and derelict train station. Then she makes it her home. Slowly she starts repairing; first the station's crumbling stonework and then her own ability to trust in others.  It takes time to adjust, and time for Wirowie to open up to Till. Small towns can be suspicious of people from the city who think they know better. But just as good and kindness can be found most anywhere, so can darkness and Till must again face her fear and discover whether she is truly as alone as she thinks. Till's story is a journey of discovery and Till must find herself in a world she doesn't even feel comfortable saying her own name.  The reader is anchored immediately to the trauma that continues to define Till. From these sparse memories we understand that danger is banal and often so nondescript you won't even recall its face. Nonetheless danger is everywhere and it can creep up on you when you least expect it. This is Till's reality and that of the women of Wirowie, plagued by their own mysterious attacker, snatching women off the streets and violently humiliating them. Within the narrative Lucy Treloar weaves stories of escape, restoration and recourse. Till is offered opportunities and she must carve out her own chances to move forward. We see that through the relationships she builds that there is hope she can learn to reconnect but that the women she is connecting with have their own damaged lives they are trying to live. Days of Innocence and Wonder feels like a thriller but reads with the subtlety and deft hand of a carefully drawn ensemble piece. As Till befriends the women of Wirowie she finds her own pain is part of a tapestry that belongs to them all. The novel entwines Till's life with the towns and suddenly all their histories are of a kind and they must come together to find a way through. In these depictions of loss and pain we see the impacts of trauma in all their embodied terror and witness a chaotic world where loss is perpetuated when there is no resolution. The book explores the ways that violence exists as both an act and as a culture that builds up perpetrators and excuses their actions. Power is called into question and Days of Innocence and Wonder is so named for the illusion that such a time ever existed. I was fascinated reading Days of Innocence and Wonder for its ability to intrigue and excite; forcing me to turn pages even as I paused to think about the implications of what I was reading. If you're looking for a summer read that asks some big questions, Days of Innocence and Wonder is definitely one to pack wherever you're heading this holiday period.

Brown has accompanied dozens of notable musicians on stage, including a six-month stint as a member of Barenaked Ladies in 1998 filling in for Kevin Hearn while Hearn battled leukemia. He is also a social justice activist and the founder of the Pros and Cons Program bringing recording arts to prisons and creating musical works for charities. The Pros and Cons Program has become internationally recognized as groundbreaking in fields of restorative justice and inmate mentorship, with the support of The David Rockefeller Fund. Brown recorded an album with the prisoners called Postcards from the County which Exclaim! described as "inescapably honest and sincere". Brown has recently launched Wolfe Island Records as a home for the prison music and the many artists he produces and collaborates with, including Fenner, Suzanne Jarvie, David Corley, One River, The Mermaids, Hadley McCall Thackston and the Stephen Stanley Band. Working the Wolfe Islander for 35 years, Brian Johnson has had the opportunity to hear a lot of stories about the Island, the Ferry and the people who have travelled back and forth.  If you're not familiar with the geography, Wolfe Island is the largest among the Thousand Islands, stuck right between Kingston, Ontario, and Cape Vincent, New York; and where Lake Ontario meets the St. Lawrence River.   Over the years, Brian has taken these tales and ‘put them to paper'. His stories have been included in several publications, and he is putting the finishing touches on a book that will focus on the water, and the people who travelled the water, around Wolfe Island.  Definitely a ‘raconteur par excellence', Captain Brian Johnson brings our history to life.  Hope you enjoy this conversation.

#releaseoftheday EP.1 - Jukebox County (Canada) Interviews with The Best Indie Artists and Music Business Professional all over the World. JukeBox County's debut album was released May 26, 2021 through Wolfe Island Records and produced by Hugh Christopher Brown. Rich Tyo, the creative mind behind the songs and vision of Jukebox County, gets his inspiration from his experiences out on the streets working as a mental health crisis worker, developing music-based mental health programs for youth and adults, and being witness to life's hardships and the will to overcome through hope, compassion, firm grounding, and connecting to one's passions above all else. Drawing from influences such as Neil Young, Nick Drake, The Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, and The Beatles, JukeBox County's album (Inner Space/ Outer Space) contains deep dialogues about what makes us human and how we cope with the questions that come with our existence. The music inspires hope, connection, introspection, and joy. He teamed up with some amazing musicians from Wolfe Island and Kingston to create sounds that will inspire your body to move, your heart to leap, and your mind to explore the deeper realms of your being. JukeBox County is the musical project of Rich Tyo- a psychotherapist, psychonaut, poet, DJ, and Psychedelic harm reduction/ mental health advocate. Rich has a breadth of experience- running music groups in psych wards, writing songs with young adults recovering from their first episode of psychosis, publishing poetry in various anthologies, and he even interviewed men in prisons across South Eastern Ontario for research through York University. He has spoken at conference in Pakistan, Prague, Berlin, and Canada and continues to dream big as he seeks adventure in the inner and outer landscapes of his existence. Rich has also built grass-roots communities and scenes and curated art and music shows like Rock and Roll Revival (Ottawa, Ontario) and Midnight Magic Rodeo Show Kingston, Ontario). These events combined his passions of social justice, community building, reciprocal inspiration, art-making, live performances of poetry and music, live video projections, and 'diy' stations with typewriters, magnet making, and other collage making.

#34 - Steve Tyson (a.k.a Tyson) has had something like 27 different jobs in his life. From selling peanut butter cups when he was 10 so he could buy a Nintendo Gamecube, to founding Karbon Brewing Company in 2020, Tyson has often had a motivation behind each job he's worked beyond just making money. After a number of paths through post-secondary education and a number of jobs working in stadium events management, Tyson moved into the hospitality industry where he saw a number of issues with the sex, drugs and rock and roll lifestyle lived by many who worked within the industry. He worked his way up the restaurant/bar management ladder trying to influence change from the inside until he realized he could help impact change on a larger scale if he wasn't tied to just a few locations. That's when he and his business partner founded their own consulting company, Take Action Consulting. As Covid-19 devastated their target market, Steve and his partner found themselves with fewer and fewer clients, but it only takes one client to change things. While consulting with a resort on Wolfe Island, they were made aware of a failed brewery on the island, and that lit a spark for Tyson. What if they opened a brewery that would not only make great beer but help combat climate change and raise awareness of social justice issues? That's how he became one of the Founder of Karbon Brewing Company, a brewery that aims to become Canada's first carbon-negative brewery. Listen to Tyson's interview to hear the whole story.______________________To support Career Crossroads, click hereTo leave Career Crossroads a review, click hereYou can find Career Crossroads at careercrossroadspodcast.com or follow us on social mediaInstagram: @career_crossroadsLinkedIn: Career Crossroads PodcastFacebook: Career Crossroads PodcastTwitter: @jcollatonTikTok: @jonathancollaton___________________You can find Career Crossroads at careercrossroads.ca or follow us on social media: Instagram: @career_crossroadsLinkedIn: Career Crossroads PodcastFacebook: Career Crossroads PodcastTikTok: @jonathancollaton
