Looking at Teen's Lives Through Their Daily Struggles | Apodcast.com with Dr. Lulu

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 14, 2020 105:26

‘A Teen’s Life: Looking At Teens Through Their Struggles’ is a book by Uchenna L. Umeh, MD, MBA, FAAP, also known as Dr. Lulu the Momatrician. Her book discusses the stressors faced by teenagers at present and how it interplays with their decisions that might have lasting outcomes, which affects the prevalence of suicide among the youth. Join host Adrian Sinclar and Uchenna L. Umeh as they discuss suicide and shed light as to why it also a life issue and not just a mental issue, what factors influence people to commit suicide, how we can help them.‘What happened?’ That is the question we ought to be asking suicidal people or those suffering from mental anguish and despair that may lead them to commit suicide. Asking them ‘why’ has a judgmental tone to it, like when we ask them why they attempted suicide, or why they were bullied, or why were they molested. It’s a question that doesn’t open a door for a suicidal person to engage in a conversation because it makes them hesitant to speak up, thinking that if they say something people would judge them. And that’s the thing. Most people have this perception that when a person is suicidal, they are labeled as ‘crazy,’ or that ‘they do not have enough faith in God,’ or that they are ‘sinful’ and ‘will end up in hell.’ Because of that alienation, suicidal people are left on their own until it is too late for any intervention. But if we ask them ‘what happened’ instead, we are being compassionate. By asking that question, we are giving them a message, an assurance that we are here to listen and to talk; that there is someone who is there for them, that they are not alone. In our podcast with Dr. Uchenna L. Umeh, author of the book ‘A Teen’s Life: Looking at teens’ life through their struggles,’ she shared that there are two simple ways to help prevent people from committing suicide. The first is to tune in with ourselves, our family, our friends, and other people. If we do, then we’ll notice their body language and allow them to talk, which is the second one. Uchenna defined ‘talk’ as the following: 1.) T - Tell someone that you don’t feel good; 2.) A - Allow people to help you; 3.) L – Love yourself into wanting to get better; and 4.) K – Knowledge and Kindness. Educate yourself about what’s going on and how did you get here, and be kind to yourself. Kindness is the most important trait any human can have. Depression, anxiety, and other forms of mental illness are commonly associated with suicide. But not all those who suffer from or are diagnosed with mental illnesses or disorders are the only ones who commit. Many happen to be victims of bullying, discrimination and racism, domestic violence, financial loss, and sexual violence, among many others. On the topic of bullying, Uchenna shared that studies showed that girls have a higher rate of suicidal behaviors, tendencies, or thought processes. However, boys have a higher rate of suicide completion and that is really heartbreaking. Worse still, some victims of bullying also become bullies themselves, and that the rate of suicide and incarceration among them is high. But why does bullying continue? Bystanders. Uchenna pointed out that because we chose to be bystanders - not associating ourselves, for example, with the victims because either it doesn’t affect you or you fear retribution from those oppressing the victim - is the reason why bullying proliferates. And it’s not just restricted in schools.Bullying also happens at home, at the office, or even from your community. We must understand that suicide isn’t just a mental issue – it’s a life issue. And that is what Uchenna pointed out in our podcast; that there is more to suicide than just depression or any mental disorder one may be suffering from. Apodcast.com - Listen, Learn, and Share. Click the follow button on the podcast page to get more content from us. The Ignorance of Bliss: An American Kid in Saigon | apodcast.com with Sandy Hanna

‘The Ignorance of Bliss: An American Kid in Saigon’ is a book by Sandy Hanna that tells her life and experiences with her military family in Saigon, Vietnam during the 1960’s. Join host Adrian Sinclair and Sandy Hanna as they explore her life in the Southeast Asian country and how it inspired her to write her book, as well as how those experiences impacted her as a child and now as an adult. They’ll also discuss child development, the importance of history and culture, as well as Sandy’s work at Sesame Street. For military child, it’s about living in the moment. And for a child to live in an environment filled with bombings, coups, and spying activities, you expect yourself to be attentive, independent, and resilient because things are always unexpected, and they need to be constantly on the move. That’s what Sandy Hanna’s life was like when she discussed about it during our podcast. Sandy shared that she was a BRAT (British Regiment Attached Transfer) and lived in Vietnam with her military family between the ages of 10 and 12 in the early 1960’s.She and her family had a decadent life when they moved to Vietnam during that time. She also had difficulty learning Vietnamese, but managed to learn French since Vietnam used to be under French rule. Vietnam was under France since 1887. During World War II, Japan invaded Southeast Asia. When the war ended, France continued to rule over Vietnam until May 1954 when the French were defeated at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu. Sandy also shared that she and her siblings used to sell baby powder and Hershey bars at the marketplace in Saigon, or when they meet other children (since they were constantly on the move with her family) they do not evaluate what they don’t like about that individual. She said that when they meet other kids, they would always live in the moment and they would always assume that they never will meet again, which they don’t and might never will. And that is just really heartbreaking. But what struck me that most during our podcast with her is that she wanted people to value history and culture, especially when visiting a country, whether it be Vietnam or any other place, and I absolutely agree with her. It’s not that history keeps repeating itself. Rather, our ignorance of it is what makes us to repeat it.“If you don’t understand history, you are destined to repeat it,” she said. There were so many insightful things Sandy mentioned during our podcast, like the Diem regime, how the Americans unwittingly supported a corrupted regime, and how the McCarthy-era in the United States created a mentality at that time that if you knew something about Asia, you’re seen as a communist. Talking about her childhood, Sandy said that she never gets to experience what a normal child would. And so when she became an adult, Sandy became interested in child development and the biology of cognition, as well as a child’s concept of the world and a child’s conception of physical causality, which helped her understand herself, the stages of her development, and children.Through that, she helped build venture playgrounds and children’s museums and was eventually recruited Sesame Street where, she said, she had a great time. During her time at working with Sesame Street, she shared that they had to come up with activities in which children of different ages would get different experiences based on four key design principles: the physical child, the social child, the emotional child, and the cognitive child. In a sense of having to grow up too fast, she shared that she was able to go back in time and create these experiences of what it was like to be a kid again and live precariously with children.Among other things we discussed was her love for painting. She shared that her mom used to hire a Japanese woman who taught watercolor painting, which she found that she wasn’t really quite good. Later on, she discovered an interest in oil paint and acrylic paint which, unlike water painting, doesn’t dry out quickly and gives artists more time to add something or make changes. For a child growing up in a military environment, she was able to experience what a normal childhood was through her passion and work as an author, designer, and painter.==================Apodcast.com - Listen, Learn, and Share.Don’t forget to like the video, hit the subscribe button, and click the notification bell to get more of apodcast.com. We also chat about his journey from vegan / vegetarian diet to a carnivore based eating. After doing a 21 day fast (water only) I decided to try to eat carnivore style for a month to see what changes would happen to my body, how I would feel and if I could stick to this type of eating. I believe that everyone is free to experiment on their own body, so I wanted to try this diet before trying vegan and vegetarian lifestyle, and so the CARNIVORE MONTH PROJECT started. As you would expect eating steak and burgers can quickly get boring, so I needed to find a source of carnivore recipes that would keep me enjoying this type of eating for a month. Enter Jessica Haggard, Tristan's wife, who published: "The Carnivore Cookbook" - full of wonderful, yet simple recipes to keep your taste buds happy. You can check out "The Carnivore Cookbook" here, and if you choose to get a copy, use the links below to get yourself a discount:http://www.primaledgehealth.com/?aff=28 or this link: https://bit.ly/2yP0Qva ENJOY!==================================Apodcast.com - Listen, Learn and Share. INSTEAD OF TREATING SYMPTOMS, LETS TREAT THE UNDERLYING TRAUMA What if, instead of treating the many symptoms of trauma (PTSD, rage, loss of memory or identity, etc.), we had a way to treat the source of the trauma itself while also creating the framework for long term peer-to-peer support? Veterans of War is doing just that by offering a six-month group fellowship curriculum for treatment-resistant veteran teams. The veteran teams, called Fireteams, will use all 3 methods approved by the American Psychological Association to combat the after-effects of war: Education, Psychotherapy, and Psychopharmacology. THE FIRETEAM’S MISSION TO HEAL IS ACCOMPLISHED IN 3 PHASES: 1) FIRETEAM OF 4 VETERAN PARTICIPANTS BEGIN 2 MONTHS OF GUIDED GROUP THERAPY WITH A CERTIFIED INTEGRATION COACH DESIGNED TO PROVIDE EDUCATION AND PREPARATION FOR PHASE 2. 2) FIRETEAM, COACH, AND VOW STAFF MEET FOR A 12 DAY GUIDED PSYCHEDELIC GROUP THERAPY WORKSHOP. VETERANS WILL HAVE 4 OPPORTUNITIES TO DRINK PLANT MEDICINE IN A CEREMONIAL SETTING ON SET DAYS SPREAD OUT OVER THE PERIOD (STAGGERED WITH DAYS FOR REST, DEBRIEFING, COACHING CIRCLE, GUIDED MEDITATION, AND YOGA). 3) FIRETEAM MEMBERS RETURN HOME AND BEGIN THE FINAL 4 MONTHS OF THE FELLOWSHIP CURRICULUM DESIGNED TO PROVIDE CONTINUED INTEGRATION COACHING AND SUPPORT. SUPPORTING INTEGRATION IS ESSENTIAL TO MAINTAINING POSITIVE OUTCOMES LONG TERM. Success in a Veterans of War Fellowship is a direct result of connection through shared experience, long-term peer-to-peer support, accountability, and hard work. *** Special request for donations to support the Yagua Tribe: https://www.veteransofwar.org/treebranchVeterans of War, as a direct beneficiary of the work that indigenous guardians of plant medicines have provided for millennia, is committed to helping keep these people and their traditions alive. Is the Present Moment ENOUGH?  | “Every Breath is peace. Mindfulness and Buddhism.”| Apodcast.com #52 with Carl HarmanWhat is Buddhism? Who is Buddha? Learn about the origins of Buddhism and how Buddhist mindful thinking practices ease suffering, pain, loss, and fear.Buddha reached enlightenment by realizing his jailer was ignorance. He ministered for 40 years teaching others the four noble truths and eightfold path. Meditation and prayer go together. Prayer is talking to God. Meditation is listening to God.Mindfulness is being comfortable with the present moment and finding peace there. Experience the pain or happiness. Anything done in mindfulness is meditation, even normal daily activities like walking, seeing, and listening to the present moment. Most look at happiness in the future. I'll be happy when I ... own a house, finish school, find the perfect job, or retire. Happiness is in the here and now. Happiness is available in looking into the present moment and experiencing it as it is, not as we'd like it to be.Eating meditation at the Deer Park Monastery. Bow to the plate and food. Look deeply into the food. Make food with love.  Food isn't yours. It contains sunlight, rain, or an animal. Experience the miracle of it. Some monks close their eyes as they chew each morsel up to 30 times and feel the vibration of food becoming them.Practice mindful shopping at the grocery store. Will this food really nourish my body? Understand where food comes from. Local farms and ranches are usually the best food sources. If you ingest food into your body that's been suffering, you feed yourself that suffering. Wild game, pasture raised, or kosher animals are healthier because the animal lived a free life. The five remembrances push away anything that's scary. All experience illness, aging, death, and loss. How to overcome the fear of death? Look it directly in the face. I could die today, but I have this breath to take in peace. The death meditation involves meditating over corpses, watching them die and decompose. My actions are my own true belongings. Actions create reality. Only invite harmonious things, then other good things come. Practice perfection in this moment.  The ego is what we think we are. It's a reflection in the mirror that thinks it's real. It's empty and made up of false narratives. Talk to it in meditation. Recognize you're not your thoughts. You are so much more, so pure. Are you sure? I'm not sure of anything. When the wave realizes it's the ocean, that's enlightenment. Let go of everything and ask what is the truth? Thank you brain, but I'm trying to listen from a deeper place. Am I separate from everybody? Are you an individual cookie or a piece of the larger cookie dough?  Buddhist view of the afterlife is Nirvana, Enlightenment, & Reincarnation. Dali Lama is the reincarnation of Avalokiteśvara, the  bodhisattva of compassion.Christ teaches love. Love God and love your neighbor. Thich Nhat Hanh loves Jesus and Buddha. If your favorite flower is roses does that mean you don't like lilies? Learn from all faiths. Talk kindly to your suffering.Recognize suffering like a doctor identifying an illness. Wounds in heart become the object of meditation. Embrace your fear, hatred, anguish, and anger. Pull it in instead of pushing it away. Showing it to doc is mindfulness. Treat it with kindness and non-violence. "I know you are there. I am here for you and I will take care of you. What are you trying to teach me." Emotions are meant to be felt and point one to peace. Find peace with yourself. Bring down the wall. It's the ego trying to protect itself.First noble truth. 1. Admit there's suffering. Can't live without suffering. It's more suffering to pretend you don't have suffering. 2. reason to suffering. 3. end to suffering. 4. Eight fold path is end of suffering. Right view = wholesome viewHow to practice right speech? Start with yourself. There's no right speech with others if don't have it first with yourself. Practice saying things true but good. "I am worthy of love." Start with ourselves and then it's easy to say to others. How to become a better compassionate listener? Practice listening to understand, not reply. Listen to someone who rubs you the wrong way. Find the compassion in people you disagree with. Top Buddhist practice - stop fighting with yourself. Breathing in I know emotion is in me. Be kind to it. Rule of 3 - Accept the moment as if you chose it. Do something to make the moment better. Or leave the moment. Practice accepting hard things. I'm choosing to be here in this moment. Stand in the slowest grocery line. ==================================Apodcast.com - Listen, Learn and Share.Join our Facebook Group "Apodcast with..." and introduce us to our next guests: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2266073637018886/https://Apodcast.com https://www.youtube.com/apodcasthttps://facebook.com/apodcastshow https://www.facebook.com/groups/2266073637018886/https://twitter.com/Apodcasta https://www.instagram.com/adrianwsinclair https://pinterest.com/apodcasta
