Arme mensen leven korter en zijn vaker ziek, en dat is niet hun eigen schuld. Dit kan anders.We weten al tientallen jaren dat er een grote samenhang is tussen gebrekkige bestaanszekerheid en ongezondheid. Bij mensen met geldproblemen en in onzekerheid over werk, wonen en welzijn, stapelen zich vaak andere problemen op. Zo zijn mensen in zo'n slechte situatie drie keer zo vaak depressief. Het omgekeerde is even zo waar. Niemand zo arm en bestaans-onzeker als chronisch zieken en mensen met een beperking.Toch pakken we het voorkomen van gezondheidsproblemen meestal alleen maar aan vanuit de context van zorg en gezondheid, zonder de achterliggende factoren als leefomstandigheden, bestaanszekerheid en sociale uitsluiting aandacht te geven.Dat moet en kan anders, vinden Anna Hiemstra en Ruud Dorenbos. Ik ga met ze in gesprek over een essay dat ze daarover schreven, met de heldere titel "Zonder bestaanszekerheid geen gezondheid". Anna werkt bij Pharos, Expertisecentrum Gezondheidsverschillen, en weet alleen over gezondheidsverschillen. Ruud werkt bij Platform 31, Kenniscentrum voor Stad en Regio, en onderzoekt bestaanszekerheid. AOA President Ann Van Heest, MD, FAOA, connected with Canadian Orthopaedic Association (COA) Past President, Laurie Hiemstra, MD, PhD, FRCSC, to discuss her unusual path to leadership, her plan for improving diversity in orthopaedics, and the most pressing critical issues affecting the COA. While waitlisting and licensure issues between provinces continue to be a challenge within the orthopaedic specialty, Dr. Hiemstra made it her goal to advocate for underrepresented groups, unify the community, and help develop competent young orthopaedic leaders.

Weerman Gerrit Hiemstra wordt na 24 jaar NOS journaal 'duurzaam bouwadviseur'. Hiemstra groeide op in Friesland op de boerderij, ging voor een studie naar Wageningen, zeilde ooit van Amerika naar Friesland en wil nu helpen de wereld echt te veranderen door klimaatneutraal te bouwen. Het zonnetje op de landkaart van Nederland kreeg in zijn tijd een andere lading. Onlangs opende hij zijn weerbericht met de opmerking; ‘Welkom in ons nieuwe klimaat'. Voormalig schaatser Barbara de Loor werd heel vaak vierde maar sloot haar carriere uiteindelijk af met een felbegeerde gouden WK-plak op de 1000 meter. Het was het einde van een sportleven dat veel van haar gevraagd had. Inmiddels ligt die tijd ver achter haar; ze ging meedoen aan tv-programma's, volgde een opleiding tot orthomoleculair voedingsadviseur en is sinds afgelopen week is ze de kersverse presentator van het fitnessprogramma ‘Nederland in beweging'.

Het is loeiheet in Zuid-Europa. Een extreme hittegolf trekt over, weerrecords worden verbroken en er klinken aan alle kanten waarschuwingen voor de gezondheid van mensen. Het is ongekend, maar niet onverwacht wat er gebeurt vertelt NOS-weerman Gerrit Hiemstra in podcast de Dag. Hiemstra presenteert al bijna 25 jaar het weer op tv en radio en stopt er in september mee. Hij gaat verder als groene ondernemer. In al die jaren heeft Gerrit Hiemstra gezien hoe de invloed van klimaatverandering steeds groter werd op het weer. En dat heeft hemzelf en z'n vak veranderd. Waar een weerman vroeger werd gecomplimenteerd om z'n mooi aansluitende pakken en het zonnige weer, is ook dat klimaat onherkenbaar anders. Bedreigingen, haatmails: het hoort er nu bij. Klokkenluiders zoals Kim Koumans komen met naam en toenaam in de media. Is dat nodig om de bal aan het rollen te krijgen? Barend: "Het gebeurt helaas in heel veel gebieden waar een machtsverhouding heerst, iemand kan je groot maken" (07:12) Kuijpers Mediamoment gaat over een foto van het Pentagon. Op Twitter leek het alsof er rook uit het Amerikaans ministerie van Defensie kwam. Het zorgde direct voor een dalende beurs, terwijl de foto fake was. Hoe kon je zien dat het niet echt was? En waar is het verdampte geld heen gegaan?  (13:00) Gerrit Hiemstra stopt na bijna 25 jaar als weerman bij de NOS. Hij geldt ook als expert op het gebied van weer en klimaat en daar gaat hij nu de boodschap in de praktijk brengen. Het weerbericht gaat nooit meer hetzelfde zijn?! Hiemstra is ook erg actief op Twitter, is die rol wenselijk voor een moderne weerman? Kuijper: "De weerman geeft mensen hoop" (18:37) We eindigen met finfluencers, ofwel financiële influencers. Honderden particuliere beleggers hebben miljoenen verloren aan Grinta Invest. De AFM is nu een onderzoek gestart naar het platform en de rol van de influencers. Hueck: "Je hebt voor advies een vergunning nodig" Kuijper is argwanend over valuta: "Mag ik als simpele burger zeggen 'eigen schuld dikke bult'?"

Geen paniek als je denkt iets groots gemist te hebben. Het is enkel een erg omstreden idee uit een al even omstreden paper van het wetenschapsblad Progress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology. Dierkundigen kunnen er momenteel maar niet bij hoe zo'n bizar en pseudowetenschappelijk betoog ooit in een wetenschapstijdschrift is kunnen verschijnen. Volgens de paper is het leven dat we nu kennen zo complex dat het niet enkel door evolutie op aarde kan zijn ontstaan. Het moet tijdens een bepaalde periode in de geschiedenis (de Cambrische Explosie) zijn beïnvloed door virussen die ooit vanuit de ruimte naar de aarde zijn gekomen. Daarbij proberen de auteurs het bestaan van de octopus als bewijs te nemen, omdat het zo'n intelligent dier is. Zelfs de optie van octopussen als volwaardige buitenaardse wezens (octopus-eieren afkomstig van een komeet) wordt door de auteurs niet uitgesloten. Naturalis-bioloog en inktvis*-kenner Auke-Florian Hiemstra stelt ons gerust. Hoewel octopussen een erg vreemde zenuwstructuur hebben is het zeker mogelijk dat ze niet alleen door evolutie kunnen zijn ontstaan, maar ook zo intelligent kunnen zijn. Hiemstra is zelfs verplicht om extra papierwerk in te vullen in verband met de wet op dierproeven voordat hij ze mag onderzoeken. Hiemstra geeft slechts een kleine handgreep aan voorbeelden van wat deze wonderbaarlijke dieren in staat zijn. * De octopussen vormen een dierenorde die behoort tot de klasse van de inktvissen. Niet elke inktvis is dus een octopus of zo slim als een octopus! Er zijn zo'n 1000 soorten inktvissen, 300 daarvan zijn soorten octopus.
