Who are you arguing with? Maybe not the person in front of you. For most of us Trauma argues with trauma. Our real human nature is love, mental clarity, creativity, and a zest for life that is informed by the past but no longer weighed down or controlled by it. Conflict worsens when two people fall into defensive reactions. Then there is no real communication happening, only trauma arguing with trauma. ~ Young PuebloMusic credit to Kalvin Love for the podcast's theme song “Bee Your Best Self”Tune into our CHW Streaming Radio and the full lineup at cominghomewell.comDownload on Apple Play and Google PlayOnline-Therapy.com ~ Life Changing Therapy Click here for a 20% discount on your first month.Contact Suzi at suzigma@gmail.com or (818) 470-2013 and share your story.suzilandolphi.comvetsandplayers.orgwildhorserescue.org Thank you for listening! Today's chat with Jeff Werner, producer and director, Suzi spotlights the plight of Veterans struggling with PTSD upon their return to civilian life. "Those Who Serve" Jeff's evocative film, serves as the backdrop for a critical exploration of the legal system's interaction with these battle-scarred warriors. Through stories of Marine veterans and their families, we dissect the pressing need for legal reforms and the societal support crucial for their reintegration.Closing on a note that resonates with our collective conscience, we address the importance of communal support for our Veterans. We envision a future where transition programs mirror the rigor of military training and where the art of storytelling in film becomes a vessel for change. This episode paints a vivid picture of how our reactions to trauma can shape our lives and the role of mental health practices in helping us to become the individuals we aspire to be.Are we poisoning ourselves with resentment? What happens when we hold expectations for the people we help? As we peel back these layers, we discuss the potential dangers resentment poses to our physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and financial health. Our men and women of service are oftentimes put into horrific situations civilians will never understand or process. Decisions are made based on all the factors that are playing on that one moment. In today's episode Suzi is joined by Juston Graber, Army Combat Veteran, actor, producer and writer to discuss his time before, during and after his service. Juston is very candid and transparent about his journey and discusses in detail one of those very moments in time that change his course of both service and life. This is a completely different approach and having the knowledge given to us by those receiving the care is empowering to do a better job. What are your experiences as a young adult receiving care? What feedback can you provide so we as caregivers can do better and be better at providing care?Email Suzi at suzigma@gmail.com with your comments and suggestions. Gentling the soul through equine therapy. Suzi talks about an organization dear to her heart, Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue and how horses are helping veterans to heal. Horses live in the moment, and they are sensitive to energy levels, so it is important to be honest about how you are feeling in that moment. Your thoughts, feelings and actions must be the same in order to be honest. If you are being honest with how you are feeling the horse will respond in kindness. One has to learn to be congruent, consistent and how to pressure and release when interacting with the horse. One practice used is a "Please and Thank you" approach.Listen in as Suzi gives examples of how they work to gentle the wild horses and use this practice to help veterans to heal. Are you coping to feel better or are you thriving and growing? Do you use the same approach or tactic to resolve every problem or situation?Suzi challenges you to make a list of other words to describe how you might be feeling. For example, instead of saying "I am scared to start this new job" which can activate adrenaline and your stress response, use the word opportunity: "I see this new job as an opportunity to grow and learn". Words do matter and it is how you can use them to help grow and thrive. Finding agency and his purpose is how he rolls. Dustin Belusack, U.S. Army National Guard Veteran and Merging Vets and Players Virtual Program Manager, is Suzi's guest today. "I'm a proud native of the burbs of Cleveland, Ohio, and a veteran of the Army National Guard. After being activated, I lost myself and my drive, and eventually, I lost everything, I took the time to reflect on my life and make the necessary changes to become the best version of myself. It hasn't been easy, but I'm determined to keep learning and growing every day. I'm excited to see what the future holds and am committed to making a positive impact in the world." ~ DustinDustin BioDustin served in the Army National Guard from 1999 to 2006. His motivation to join the military came from a desire to understand his father's service in Vietnam. Dustin served as a mechanized mortarman until 9/11, and then even though he was at school at the time, he was placed on active duty. In 2016, Dustin ended up in transitional housing while looking to change his life. He decided to start saying 'yes' to healthy changes.Dustin was then offered a job at a non-profit that helps stray animals, and when Covid hit, his team adjusted the mission to help low-income communities, increasing outreach. Because of a more robust need for systems, Dustin created a process of ordering, packaging, and delivering pet food to over 32,000 animals, which is still in use. Dustin first heard about MVP while living in veteran transitional housing and he decided to give MVP a try. Dustin loved the organization and was motivated by the team to keep showing up and hold himself accountable...and it changed his life forever.
