What can life in space teach us about living well on earth? As an astronaut, Kayla Barron she has lived this very question. As a member of the NASA's mission to the International Space Station, she and her crew spent 177 days in orbit. In that time, she performed two space walks. Before becoming an astronaut, she earned a degree in nuclear engineering and served as one of the first female Submarine Warfare Officers in the US Navy. Turns out life on a submarine has a lot in common with life in space. In this conversation, Kayla shares what it was like to look back on earth from space and the emotions it sparked. She remembers how she kept alive her connection with her family on earth, while she also formed essential, and meaningful relationships with her fellow astronauts on the space station. She opens up about the struggle that came after completing her mission, and the difficulty of finding her footing literally and emotionally. For Kayla, lving in space was a contemplation on what really matters in life. This conversation was recorded in front of a live audience. Did you know that between 1834 and 1917, more than one million Coolies were taken across the Kala Pani, or Dark Waters, to the plantations of Malaya, Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad, British Guiana, Jamaica, and British Honduras? In “Coolie Woman: the Odyssey of Indenture,” Gaiutra Bahadur describes how the British and other Colonial Powers transformed generations of skilled Indians into an “indistinguishable mass of plantation laborers.” Part of that transformation took part during the journey from India to the Caribbean which, for many, was unimaginably excruciating. In fact, poor ventilation, outbreaks of disease, and a lack of food was common aboard the ships used to transport Indentured Indians. When they reached their destination, they were met with a hostile and unfamiliar environment and forced to work long hours for low wages. But despite all odds, they persevered and laid a foundation that future generations would build on. Learn more about the strength, resilience, and legacy of the Indo-Caribbean community in Episode 2 of The Peppa Pot Podcast: Camphor on the Dark Waters. Exotheology expert and author of The Bible and Flying Saucers Reverend Barry Downing, PhD beams in to talk about the influence of extraterrestrials on Christianity — and his appearance on History's Ancient Aliens — on episode 104 of the Far Out with Faust podcast. If you've been wondering about whether some of the stories told in the Bible have their roots in ancient extraterrestrial contact, this is the show for you. Faust and Dr. Barry dive right into the question of how souls arrive on Earth, and how it relates to UFOs in the story of Genesis. The two discuss several Biblical legends that may in fact trace back to ET experiences.Listen in to Reverend Barry's deep store of Biblical knowledge, and hear his personal tale of what it's been like to be a church pastor and an ET believer at the same time. Stick around till then end, when Dr. Barry shares his bit of coded wisdom for humanity.Barry H. Getting the goal accomplished can be SO hard! Yes, we can make the goal! Yes, we can map out a plan! But what about completing the goal and checking it off?! That's the hard part. Sometimes we forget about the goal and the small steps needed every day in our 15 minutes chunks. Sometimes life just happens and there is zero room. Sometimes we tried but getting to the end of our quarter means we are still not done with our goals. Argh! Another goal NOT done! So … How do we conquer our goals? How do we become flexible with life happening? How do we STOP quitting on our goals? How do we STOP pushing our goals off until “later”?! Today, we are talking about readjusting your goals, because readjusting is the secret sauce to slowly, and imperfectly accomplishing our goals. Readjustment is what is going to get us there! Let's take this even one step farther and put a due date on our goals. Which means we are always moving forward! Let's close out our quarter in a smart way that has our goals adjusted and we are going strong. This means goals are accomplished and on “time”! Matt Standish from the Bay County Vet Center joins us to talk about the "best kept secret in the VA". Matt informs us of all the free, confidential services available at the Vet Center for veterans and their families. The Vet Center in Bay County, FL is just one of 300 Vet Centers in the U.S. After talking about the Vet Center, we couldn't help asking about Matt's active duty experiences in the US Air Force, deployments and his book. He shares personal tools that he used as First Sergeant to keep up morale and build resiliency."Vet Centers are community-based counseling centers that provide a wide range of social and psychological services, including professional readjustment counseling to eligible Veterans, active duty service members, including National Guard and Reserve components, and their families. Readjustment counseling is offered to make a successful transition from military to civilian life or after a traumatic event experienced in the military. Individual, group, marriage and family counseling is offered in addition to referral and connection to other VA or community benefits and services. Vet Center counselors and outreach staff, many of whom are Veterans themselves, are experienced and prepared to discuss the tragedies of war, loss, grief and transition after trauma." - Vet Centers (Readjustment Counseling) Home (va.gov)Bay County Vet Center3109 Minnesota Ave, Suite 101Panama City, FL 32405Phone: 850-522-6102Bay County Vet Center - Locations (va.gov)how ya doing? | Alignment Bay County

In times of change, I'm finding that there are also moments of pivoting. Readjustment, realignment, reconfiguration. After months of quarantine, weeks of civil unrest, and all of the personal experiences, it came time to take time to reevaluate where I've been, what direction I want to keep going in, and taking into account external and internal factors that have made an impact on my ambitions. In this weeks episode I have an open dialogue about how dating and binging NYFS episodes got me to a place of reflection and how I still know nothing about Instagram. Also, I talk about ideas of new content and plans for future episodes! NYFS is on Spotify and Apple Podcast - subscribe to stay updated on new episodes that are released every Sunday! Welcome to the Sober is Dope Podcast with your host, POP Buchanan. This episode is part of our Back to the Basics, Recovery Roadmap series. The goal of this episode is to point out the stages of recovery, and prevent relapse. Thanks SAMHSA for this amazing information. SAMHSA Client Handbook https://store.samhsa.gov/system/files/sma15-4154.pdf Recovery Road Map Videos SAMHSA Part 1 - https://youtu.be/dkAY8m-uJI0 Part 2- https://youtu.be/bQPc8oNnrO8 Part 3- https://youtu.be/t934V54b2DE Part 4- https://youtu.be/0VCTiLVEPlk Part 5- https://youtu.be/gUWyVkta1Bw Part 6- https://youtu.be/m8QXHTAJvZs Recovery from a substance use disorder is not a mysterious process. After the use of substances is stopped, the brain goes through a biological readjustment. This readjustment process is essentially a “healing” of the chemical changes that were produced in the brain by substance use. It is important for people in the beginning stages of recovery to understand why they may experience some physical and emotional difficulties. The durations of the stages listed below are a rough guide of recovery, not a schedule. The length of stages will vary from person to person. The substance used will affect the client’s progress through the stages, too. Clients who had been using methamphetamine will tend to spend more time in each stage than clients who were using cocaine or other stimulants. The Stages Withdrawal Stage (1 to 2 weeks) During the first days after substance use is stopped, some people experience difficult symptoms. The extent of the symptoms often is related to the amount, frequency, and type of their previous substance use. Early Abstinence (4 weeks; follows Withdrawal) For people who used stimulants, this 4-week period is called the Honeymoon. Most people feel quite good during this period and often feel “cured.” As a result, clients may want to drop out of treatment or stop attending 12-Step meetings during the Honeymoon period. Early abstinence should be used as an opportunity to establish a good foundation for recovery. If clients can direct the energy, enthusiasm, and optimism felt during this period into recovery activities, they can lay the foundation for future success. Protracted Abstinence (3.5 months; follows Early Abstinence) From 6 weeks to 5 months after clients stop using, they may experience a variety of annoying and troublesome symptoms. These symptoms—difficulties with thoughts and feelings—are caused by the continuing healing process in the brain. This period is called the Wall. It is important for clients to be aware that some of the feelings during this period are the result of changes in brain chemistry. If clients remain abstinent, the feelings will pass. The most common symptoms are depression, irritability, difficulty concentrating, low energy, and a general lack of enthusiasm. Clients also may experi- ence strong cravings during protracted abstinence. Relapse risk goes up during this period. Clients must stay focused on remaining abstinent one day at a time. Exercise helps tremendously during this period. For most clients, completing this phase in recovery is a major achievement. Readjustment (2 months; follows Protracted Abstinence) After 5 months, the brain has recovered substantially. Now, the client’s main task is developing a life that has fulfilling activities that support continued recovery. Although a difficult part of recovery is over, hard work is needed to improve the quality of life. Because cravings occur less often and feel less intense 6 months into recovery, clients may be less aware of relapse risk and put themselves in high-risk situations and increase their relapse risk. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/soberisdope/message

Vet Centers are one of VA's most valuable and crucial resources. Vet Centers are community-based counseling centers that provide a wide range of social and psychological services, including professional readjustment counseling to eligible Veterans, active duty service members, including National Guard and Reserve components, and their families. Readjustment counseling is offered to make a successful transition from military to civilian life or after a traumatic event experienced in the military. Individual, group, marriage and family counseling is offered in addition to referral and connection to other VA or community benefits and services. Vet Center counselors and outreach staff, many of whom are Veterans themselves, are experienced and prepared to discuss the tragedies of war, loss, grief and transition after trauma. While I was in Dallas, visited the Vet Center in Arlington, TX and sat down with Vet Center Director Joel Chaverri for an interview. Joel tells us about his time in the Marine Corps, his path to becoming a social worker, and what everyone needs to know about how Vet Centers serve Veterans and their families.

You may have changed, but the world you knew before has chugged along as normal- and friends have even gotten used to not having you around. Readjustment to the daily grind can take a lot more effort than expected, and your family might not understand. I write these show notes with tears in my eyes. I have done this show for two years and I have never been more proud to present a guest as I am for this show. I met a young Latino man at the Philadelphia Free Library one night. I was asked to go by another man I deeply respect. Little did I know just what this man would come to mean to me. He is an inspiration, he is a model to emulate, he is a healer, and, in my humble opinion, he is the best of the best! Captain Luis Carlos Montalván is an author. Yet, he is much more! He is a healer. He takes the wounds we do not understand and often feel isolated as a result, and gives them reason. His highly acclaimed book, Until Tuesday, is taking this nation by their hearts strings. It is a story of love. Not between a man and a woman but between a man and his dog. Yet, this relationship is more deep and loving then many relationships I have seen as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Captain Montalvan is a Veteran of the Iraq war. He reveals his experiences in the war but more, his is a story of a Veteran in this nation after returning from war. I cried, I smiled, but most of all I feel whole. I now know my injuries are not unique to me. Thank you Captain Montalvan. As a proud member of Latin American Post 840, American Legion, I salute you. I am humbled and immensely proud to call you friend!
