Alternative rock duo A Cloud of  Ravens will be unveiling their forthcoming album called "Lost Hymns" on April 28, 2023, via Nexilis Records/ Schubert Music Europe. The album is a collection mastered by Actors' Jason Corbett at the Jackknife Sound studio in Vancouver. This episode discusses how, Dr. John Fryer, under the pseudonym of Dr. H. Anonymous and with the help of a Halloween mask and a voice modulator, was able to convince the American Psychiatric Association to depathologize homosexuality. 

On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Michael Ferentino from Love In Reverse, Bedtime For Robots, and many other projects. In the mid 90s, Michael Ferentino and Andres Karu, the New York/New Jersey based dark electronic art rock duo known as DOG, performed and gained an impressive following in some of the most iconic NY and NJ clubs including CBGB, the Bitter End, the Stone Pony and the Limelight. DOG quickly evolved into the 3-piece indie/art rock/space rock band Love in Reverse and signed with Jon and Marsha Zazula's Crazed Management (former owners of Megaforce Records). That led the band to a lucrative deal with Warner/Reprise Records. Love in Reverse recorded three critically acclaimed albums with Warner/Reprise (two with legendary producer Russ Titelman and one mixed by Grammy Award Winner, Jason Corsaro and co produced by NIN producer, John Fryer). In 1996 and 1997, they toured with the likes of Gravity Kills, Stabbing Westward, Republica, and the Cult's Ian Astbury. They also played several radio festivals performing with artists ranging from the Spin Doctors and Tonic to The Deftones and Joan Jett. The band's video for “I'm a Contradiction” was featured on MTV's 120 minutes and the video for “Blueprint for a Possible Song” was included on the sampler DVD for Sony's first commercially available DVD player. Love in Reverse was featured with Peter Frampton on ABC. After three albums with Warner/Reprise, Love in Reverse disbanded and evolved once more into the Amazing Meet Project, a band which has been described by Matt Pinfield of MTVs 120 Minutes as “putting the alternative in alternative rock!” During this period, Ferentino and Karu scored the Kevin Smith produced thriller “A Better Place,” a realistically violent film that has become an underground cult classic. Their music was also featured in “Time of Your Life,” the “Party of Five” television spin-off starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and multiple MTV specials. Among a number of positive media articles featuring the band, Rolling Stone named Love in Reverse as one of 6 new promising bands of 1996. Over the next few years, Ferentino and Karu experimented with a myriad of projects, including the noisy lo-fi electronic garage band, Corduroy Poo-Poo, the spoken word experiment, Speak the Worms, the Diablo Project with Jai Diablo from Interscope Records sludge rock/stoner metal band, Dragpipe, and the electronic ambient/experimental outfit, Bedtime for Robots. In 2002, they teamed up with The Wonder Stuff front-man Miles Hunt for a collaboration dubbed the Miles Hunt Club. Karu also went on to become drummer and producer for the Wonder Stuff in the mid ‘00s while Dave Halpern played drums for multiple artists including the Bee Gees. Ferentino continued with Bedtime for Robots, releasing several acclaimed albums and tracks throughout the 2010s and into the 2020s. Bedtime for Robots were featured in Fangoria Magazine and their music has been consistently featured on DOOMED Radio, Soma FM and multiple worldwide underground Internet radio shows. In 2020, during the initial lockdown of the Coronavirus pandemic, Ferentino, Karu and Halpern put finishing touches on an album they had been secretly working on for the past couple of years and self-released the reformed Love in Reverse album, I'm an Illusion, which brought them to the attention of Ferentino's childhood friend and owner of Dada Drumming Records, an independent label from Texas which specialized in noise, sludge rock and stoner metal. Looking to expand the horizons of the label, Dada Drumming signed the band, now focusing on a return to their guitar-driven indie art rock sound. In 2021, the band put the finishing touches on their newly recorded and strongest album to date, Fake It. Dr. John Fryer was a man of uncommon brilliance. As a child, he learned so quickly and completely that his teachers called him a prodigy. He was just five years old when he started second grade, 15 when he graduated from high school, and 19 when he graduated college and enrolled at Vanderbilt University Medical School where he became one of the youngest students ever to study psychiatry. He graduated in 1962. Dr. John Fryer was also gay. Back then, homophobia was codified and enshrined by the medical world and criminalized by law, a legally sanctioned form of hate. It was legal to fire someone or refuse to rent to someone based on their sexual orientation. It was even legal to arrest someone simply for the “crime” of holding a lover's hand or for being served alcohol at a gay bar. Fryer was taunted on the playground and in the classroom, and even in medical school, he found no reprieve. The foundational diagnostic text used by all psychiatrists, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DSM, listed homosexuality as a mental illness. In other words, Fryer was literally taught that the way he felt, who he was attracted to, was a disease. Fryer wanted to be seen and loved for who he was.

Singer, songwriter and photographer, Attasalina said her name is her birth name given by her godmother, a pioneer teacher of Buddhism in the West, and has been translated as “providing the meaning”.  She describes her inspiration in her work as her work is  "culturally informed by lineages in Theravada Buddhism and Indigenous Religion and Resistance Movements and focuses on visionary experiences as a quest for truth explored through personal narratives of oppression, awareness and survival."Her musical abilities can be traced to her grandfather, a Cuban-American progressive jazz drummer and singer. Attasalina formed her first rock and roll band called "The Seraphim Rising" in 2008. Her first release was a collaboration with guitarist Daniel Ash of Bauhaus and Love and Rockets called “The Soldiers of Everyday” in 2010. The song is part of  a limited edition CD called "Freedom I Love" released  in 2016. Attasalina also collaborated with the legendary producer John Fryer for Black Needle Noise with a song called "Messages By Dreams" released on the album "Before The Tears Came." The legendary English record producer, John Fryer returns on the show and this time with the founder of COP International, Christian Petke. John Fryer started his musical career working at Blackwing Studios in South London in the late 70s where he worked with some of the most prestigious indie labels at the time such as 4AD, Mute, Beggars Banquet, Rough Trade and more. Best known for the dream-pop music collective, This Mortal Coil, along with 4AD founder Ivo Watts-Russell,  Fryer helped developed the pioneering ethereal and ambient sound of 4AD.  Even after 4AD, Fryer's production credits extended decades working with renowned musicians and producing, engineering and mixing  some of the biggest names  and some of the most notable albums by Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Cocteau Twins, Yazoo, Love and Rockets, just to name a few.  He launched his musical project called Black Needle Noise (BNN) in 2016  where he continues in the spirit of collaboration with various musicians. During the interview, we look back on 40 years of the band, beginning with their rare Demo EP Subsequent Pleasures, and discuss how with the help of Dead Can Dance's Brendan Perry, Clan of Xymox were signed to 4AD. Throughout the interview, we delve further into Clan of Xymox's 4AD years. In light of Clan of Xymox's recent release Peel Sessions on vinyl, we also discuss the two recording sessions for John Peel's radio show, which, as legends goes, is how the Genre 'Darkwave" was coined. I spoke to Brian Hodges and Marselle Hodges  of the Blue Hour, a Seattle-based duo that blends ethereal and electronic music resulting in a beautiful haunting dream pop-noir. They met during the heyday of Seattle's new wave explosion in the 80s during its most magical time. Prior to forming the Blue Hour, Brian was the keyboardist for the cult goth-rock band, Black Atmosphere, a band formed by Xstoph Gladis, a former guitarist for ChristianDeath.  Black Atmosphere was a legendary live act combining theatrics with a psychedelic / glam-gothic appearance and the occasional acrobat and fire eater. Black Atmosphere was featured on several compilations from Cleopatra Records and shared the stage with many luminaries from there gothic and industrial scene. Prior to joining the Blue Hour, Marselle was the lead vocalist for the dark metal band Crypt Orchid. She has provided vocals and voice-overs for commercial recordings and guest vocals for several electronic dance and industrial projects, including John Fryer’s BLACK NEEDLE NOISE and singing backup vocal’s for Chris Connelly’s track “Dark Skies.” Marselle recently completed an album of dreamy electronic music with Pieter Nooten of 4AD/Clan of Xymox fame. The release date is coming soon. The Blue Hour is preparing to release its latest album, called “Lore,” later this Spring on Dark Vinyl. Raymond Watts is an English industrial music legend, songwriter, producer and founder of the industrial music project, As one of the founders of KMFDM, he has worked both live and as a studio sound engineer and producer with many artists, some of which include Einsturzende Neubauten, Psychic TV, Foetus, Chemlab etc.. and more recently he has collaborated with the legendary record producer John Fryer of Black Needle Noise.He has also collaborated with fashion designer icon, Alexander McQueen before his death when McQueen commissioned him and John Gosling from Psychic TV to embellish the serene instrumental track inside, from Genuine American Monster album. This became the soundtrack to what is seen as McQueen's masterpiece, Plato's Atlantis. This show was reprised as the finale of Savage Beauty, the McQueen retrospective that broke all records at the Met in New York and the V&A in London. Bergamini who founded the Italian dark electro/synthpop band, Kirlian Camera in 1979 in Parma, Italy met Fossi around 1999 and immediately recognized the very powerful connection they have. G.W. Childs IV is one of the founding members of the electro-industrial, synthpop band, Soil and Eclipse. Soil and Eclipse was formed in Hawaii by G.W. Childs and Jay Tye (vocalist) in 1995. In 1997 they released their debut album, Necromancy on COP International Records, followed by Meridian 1999, Archetype 2000, Purity 2002 and The Mirror 2008 all under the COP International record label. In 2018, Soil and Eclipse collaborated with The Razor Skyline on a single called Sea of Change. They also released the singles, Silence, Aurora and The Last Surrender.G.W. Best known for his 4 decades of production work with record labels such as 4AD, Mute Records, Rough Trade and Beggars Banquet, just to name a few, John Fryer is one of the founders of the English music collective, This Mortal Coil, a band he formed with Ivo Watts-Russell, the founder of the British independent label, 4AD. Fryer produced the second studio album by Clan of Xymox in1986 called Medusa. In 1989 he produced the successful debut album by Nine Inch Nails' called Pretty Hate Machine. He has worked with many other notable artists in music and film throughout his musical career, many of which include Depeche Mode, The Cocteau Twins, Love and Rockets, Yaz, Nitzer Ebb, Peter Murphy, Fad Gadget, Cradle of Filth, H.I.M., Stabbing Westward, White Zombie, Sarah McLachlan and list goes on. Anton Newcombe has been a very busy man these past 2 years, kicking off with the critically acclaimed Brian Jonestown Massacre album ‘Revelation' in May 2014. After a successful UK and European tour, the BJM followed this up with the ‘+-‘ EP and 2015 saw the release of ‘Musique de film In June, Anton and Tess Parks embarked on a well received tour of the UK and Europe to support the release of ‘I Declare Nothing'. Anton finished the year with a Brian Jonestown Massacre mini-album release entitled ‘Mini-Album Thingy Wingy'. and on 28th October the Brian Jonestown Massacre will release ‘Third World Pyramid'. This weeks featured track is from Black Needle Noise feat Jennie Vee. With Black Needle Noise, it seems that John Fryer has found his dream project. The master producer and one of the masterminds of This Mortal coil is back with a new song he recorded with Jennie Vee. Jennie is currently touring with Echo And The Bunnymen.
