Original Release Date: 08/29/2022 On today's show we'll discuss a classic empty room – an opportunity ignored by most investors. In this case, we dive into the investment case for Venezuela, a non-starter for pretty much every institution because of the country's autocratic political regime, sanctions, and headline risk. But alongside those known risks are the potential for significant rewards. Rodrigo Bitar is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of 3B1 Partners, the leading private equity fund making growth investments in Venezuela. 3B1 invests in high-quality companies with leading positions in basic industries, while looking to capture a change in macroeconomic conditions in the country. Our conversation covers Rodrigo's upbringing in Chile, professional background, and investment opportunity in Venezuela. We discuss Venezuela's sanctions, economic contraction, and dollarization of the economy. We then turn to investing in the country, including sourcing, due diligence, and an example of a recent transaction. We close with a discussion of the upside and risks to investing in Venezuela. Two weeks ago, James Aitken suggested sharpening your pencil to find specific individual assets that have been beaten down, while Louis-Vincent Gave declared Latin America an attractive place to look. Combining these themes, I reached out to today's guest, Rodrigo Bitar, Co-founder of 3B1 Partners, to get his perspective on opportunities in the region. Rodrigo was a past guest on the show three years ago, and that conversation is replayed in the feed. Our conversation this time around covers the investment case for Latin America, 3B1's experience in Venezuela, lessons learned from operating in high-risk, illiquid markets, the value of bringing capital to the region, the necessity of patience, and a specific individual asset 3B1 is pursuing in Central America. So every single email, it can't just hit the inbox, it has to stand out, it has to engage from the beginning. It has to be hyper optimized for conversion. And text based without any of your brand just doesn't cut it anymore, right? And not just for solopreneurs. We actually we looked at a case study with Stripe. Stripe is a massive company, right? I think it's the largest private company in the world and they A/B tested a text-based email and one that was actually optimize for conversion using their own brand. And the on brand design-based email increased conversion by 21%. So whether you're a very small business or a large business, like design is not a luxury anymore.” — Martha Bitar, 00:03:32 → 00:04:14.160Why Owning Your Audience Matters: “The risk is not using it [email] because you saw what happened with TikTok, right? It can really disappear overnight and you're really on rented space. You don't own your audience. So over all of the effort that you put into building that followership and engagement can really go away. Where if you're building that on social media, but you're also saying, ‘Hey, by the way, join my newsletter.' That's the list that you own. You're not platform-dependent. Even if we at some point make a mistake and become like a dinosaur as well, and you want to jump ship and go to another platform, you can just download and export your entire subscriber list and go use another platform.” — Martha Bitar, 00:18:48 → 00:19:25Show notes powered by Castmagic---Have any questions about the show or topics you'd like us to explore further?Shoot us a DM; we'd love to hear from you.Want the weekly TL;DR of tips delivered to your mailbox?Check out our newsletter here.Follow us for content, clips, giveaways, & updates!Castmagic InstagramCastmagic TwitterCastmagic LinkedIn ---Blaine Bolus - Co-Founder of CastmagicRamon Berrios - Co-Founder of CastmagicMartha Bitar - Co-Founder and CEO of Flodesk

Sandy El-Bitar knows a thing or two about not doing OK. Her father died on the eve of her family's immigration from Lebanon, she's worked in palliative care, and, as a drama therapist, she spends her days helping people deal with emotional problems. But Sandy is also a comic — and instead of running away from the pain in life, she thinks there is something beautiful about finding the humour in it.

"Someone somewhere told us not to build code for our solution until we had a customer interview that made someone cry because - cry in a good way! - because they were so excited that their problem was finally getting a solution... And we did. At first when I heard it, I was like, of course no one is going to cry because this is not the type of problem that makes people cry. But we eventually did get someone who cried in a demo, and that's when we knew they were ready to build the code." Martha shares:

In this episode of the Monument Health Podcast, we speak with Dr. Amid Bitar, a general cardiologist at Monument Health Heart and Vascular Institute, about the difference between cardiac arrest and heart attack, two potentially life-threatening conditions.Dr. Bitar explains that a heart attack occurs when the blood supply to the heart muscle is blocked, while cardiac arrest is when the heart suddenly stops beating. He discusses the symptoms of each condition, as well as the risk factors and treatment options. He also covers the importance of automated external defibrillators or AEDs. Dr. Bitar also emphasizes the importance of calling 911 immediately if you or someone you know is experiencing either a heart attack or cardiac arrest. Early intervention is critical in both cases and can save lives. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

What if the best way to market an exhibition — wasn't marketing? What do we need to do better to help visitors find us in the first place? When they do, how do we engage them? When visitors arrive at our institutions, do they know where to go? What happens to the visitor's experience when we haven't thought enough about the restrooms, the stairs, or the endless line to get something to eat? Why do cultural institutions struggle with following up with visitors after they visit?Visitor experience expert Samir Bitar (The Art of Consulting) joins host Jonathan Alger (C&G Partners) to discuss The Visitor Engagement Lifecycle. Along the way: empathy training, why our technology ideas might not be what our visitors want, and how every project could use a visitors' advocate. (And the answer to that question about marketing.) Talking Points: Five main phases occur, spread along a journey before, during and after a visit. For a visual, think of these phases arranged along a circle, not a straight line. Phase 5 leads back to Phase 1, in a continuous cycle. Pre-Visit:1. Discover: Visitor is gathering information.2. Engage: Visitor is actively planning a visit, getting tickets, calling ahead. During Visit:3. Arrive: Visitor arrives on site, looking for orientation and direction.4. Experience: Visitor does the experience, uses amenities, makes purchases. Post-Visit:5. Followup: Visitor signs up for emails, gives feedback, becomes a member. Phase 5 now leads back to Phase 1. Guest Bio: Samir Bitar is a customer experience advisor, lecturer, and keynote speaker who helps organizations focus on the experiences of the people they serve. As the inaugural Director of Visitor Experience for the Smithsonian Institution he led a revitalization of the visitor experience across galleries, museums, and a zoo. In doing so, he helped transform an organization's relationship with its visitors. During his tenure, Samir pioneered the use of visitor journey mapping in museum planning and design, published a watershed study of visitors' museum experience, and produced the award-winning Hirshhorn Eye mobile app. In 2018, Samir stepped down from his position to open the National Veterans Memorial and Museum, and in 2019, founded The Art of Consulting. Through his firm, Samir works with organizations to embed new capacities that lead to a customer experience transformation.About:Making the Museum is hosted (podcast) and written (newsletter) by Jonathan Alger. When you look back on your career trajectory, what do you notice? Do you see an even trajectory in your career path? Or has your career taken some hard curves outside of the expected norms? What can seem like a setback in our planned career path can sometimes lead us to experiences that we would never have pursued - opening us up to ideas and possibilities that we would never have imagined. It is moments like these that can often help us break free from the machine of proving, striving, and grinding and actually reconnect to who we truly are and what we really want to contribute with our lives. Of course it's true that setbacks in our professional plans can be costly, painful, and downright scary. Some of the pain of setbacks can take a toll on our confidence and well-being and finances. This week, we continue our discussion of life coaching. There's been no accountability in the massive Beirut port explosion for more than two years. But a new hope suddenly emerged late last month for families of the victims, when Judge Tarek Bitar reopened his dormant investigation into the blast, and into the leaders accused of letting it happen. Two days later, Lebanon's Prosecutor General Ghassan Oweidat – one of those accused – issued his own charges against Bitar. Is this now the nail in the coffin for the blast investigation, or can the victims' families still get justice? On today's show we'll discuss a classic empty room – an opportunity ignored by most investors.
