Jenny Nuccio, Founder & CEO of Imani Collective, joins Retention Chronicles for the first episode of Season 5 to discuss social entrepreneurship for nonprofits and for-profits. Jenny has always been passionate about developing the communities she is a part of and focusing on giving back to them. After living in Kenya for many years, she and her pioneer team at Imani Collective began building their nonprofit to create opportunity through trainings and jobs.  She realized that they had to create a marketplace for their vision so that the trainings they were providing would lead to sustainable jobs, so Jenny and her team founded the for-profit side of their company, Imani Kids.  Tasked with running a nonprofit and a for-profit, Jenny learned the similarities and differences between being an executive director and a CEO. With those learnings, she decided to bring all their companies together under one umbrella and create their holding company, Imani Collective. Constantly asking herself how to build a sustainable nonprofit and for-profit business, Jenny asked herself how their company would run without her and how their ethical impact could continue its legacy in the best way possible.  Jenny also walks through how she developed Imani Kids, their ecommerce company, by using local Kenyan material and organically growing their social media profile over time. She's learned to reduce her ad spending to focus on retention over acquisition and how to leverage organic content and word-of-mouth marketing with their brand ambassador program.  This podcast is sponsored by Malomo, a leading shipment and order tracking platform for Shopify and Shopify Plus ecommerce brands.  To see what your custom mockup of branded order tracking and transactional email/SMS would look like, fill out this form & we'll send your custom design right to your inbox! My guest this week is Jenny Nuccio, a mom, wife, coach, mentor, and founder and CEO of Imani Collective. What first started as a non-profit training program has developed into a social enterprise and holistic women's empowerment program in Mombasa, Kenya. Jenny started going to Kenya when she was 18 and started Imani Collective at 21. She didn't have mentors along the way and humbly entered every door asking countless questions. Her journey felt extremely lonely and she realized so many others were in her shoes. Jenny wants women to not only come alive in who they are but also realize that they are fully capable of chasing their dreams. Jenny is a good friend of mine and was on the show in April 2021. Listen to her previous episode. 3:15 – Jenny 201 Jenny lives in Kenya and was just in the states traveling for a week. She is now Dr. Jenny Nuccio and proudly uses that title, but she's not a medical doctor. Her new book, Let it Be Wild: Stepping into the Unknown and Finding a Home, comes out May 29. 9:12 – Creative process Jenny's creative process has changed over the years. She used to journal, and now she shares thoughts by voice notes. Her book takes people behind the scenes of her life and work. Her short stories take people through the highs, lows and lessons learned. 13:16 – Radical listening Ask yourself: What are you doing to radically listen and create change? Jenny is always fighting against the narrative of quick change in communities. She wants to empower people and aid communities for the long term. 21:10 – Let it Be Wild Jenny's family always called her the wild one, so that inspired the name of her book. Her family didn't travel much, but Jenny now travels all over the world. When she was young, she had audacious bravery. 30:40 – Challenges and the future After Covid started, her business grew 116%. They handed out thousands of masks to the community. She was blessed with more business, but it was a challenge. 41:30 – Quieting the inner voice Jenny allows herself to feel emotions and have some stagnant days. Hiding under the covers is OK for awhile, but don't stay there. 47:05 – Get to know you What brings her the most joy? Her daughter's laugh.   FEATURED QUOTES My expertise is the social enterprise world. I'm always fighting against that narrative of quick relief. How are we doing empowerment and development that is actually aiding communities for the long term? What are you doing to radially listen and create change? When you're young, you have audacious bravery. https://www.amazon.com/Let-Be-Wild-Stepping-Finding/dp/B0C1TKJ2DW HTTP://www.letibewildbook.com

Social Enterprise: an enterprise that is created around solving a social problem, taking an idea and making sure it is solving a social problem, for the good. It all started with one sentence printed in a church bulletin “If you want to go to Mombasa Kenya, call Chris Boyd.”  Today's episode is a conversation with an incredibly brave and inspiring friend of mine who was living the ideal comfortable American dream life, and decided to leave it all behind to listen to a voice that told her to go to Africa. Jenny didn't have a game plan. She went and she spent time in the villages and she listened. She built relationships. And from this listening she got the idea of how she could help 16 women in Mombasa Kenya. That was how it all began for her. Jenny's story is one that can helpSince reading that bulletin more than 9 years ago, Jenny Nuccio has built an incredible socio-economic empowerment organization known as Imani Collective. Imani Collective now employs over eighty Kenyan women + men  along with half a dozen women stateside. Together, they unleash a woman's greatness through empowerment + opportunity + community. Imani sells a plethora of artisan crafted goods including pillows, banners, baskets, holiday decor and more. Jenny story has so much to teach us about how to approach helping others, short term mission trips, and how to make your big idea come to life. My guest this week is Jenny Nuccio. She’s a dear friend of mine and founder and CEO of Imani Collective, a social enterprise and holistic women’s empowerment program in Kenya, committed to breaking generational poverty. 9:44 – Jenny 101 Most people know her as the founder of Imani Collective. She is married and has three children. Jenny has some cool projects coming up, but she can’t share what they are just yet. She hasn’t even told her parents about the projects yet. She has been in Kenya for the last decade of her life and plans to stay there. 14:14 – Swahili She speaks Swahili, but she’s much better at understanding it. 19:23 – What led her to Kenya She saw a church bulletin about going to Kenya. There was a peace that resonated in her soul, and she realized she needed to be on that trip. She kept coming back to Kenya and doing what she calls “radically listening.” 27:50 – Doing it all Jenny says she gets asked all the time how she does so much, but she says no one is doing it all. She believes God is using her as a vessel to help others. 38:14 – Pivoting her business Jenny does a lot of custom orders and creates beautiful products, but she has made some changes to her business during the pandemic. She wanted to be an e-commerce business, so she started leaning into it. She also wanted to diversify her line more. 44:39 – Getting her EdD She’s getting her doctorate. She partially wants it for credibility, because she wants to be taken more seriously. She felt annoyed after meeting with mostly white men at investment meetings and being treated like a little girl. 51:58 – Get to know you Favorite TV show when she was younger? Friends Something people would never guess about her? She didn’t travel outside the country until she was 18 FEATURED QUOTES “I have some really exciting projects happening this year that I can’t even share with you guys. Just be looking out for that … Not even my parents know. That’s how behind-the-scenes it is.” – Jenny “There was just this peace that resonated in my soul, and it was like, ‘You need to be on this trip (to Kenya).’” – Jenny “I did go on a mission trip, but not with the mentality or intention of like, ‘I’m coming to serve and I’m coming to make things better.’ It came of like, ‘I’m coming to learn and grow and see what else is out there in these beautiful cultures.’” – Jenny “I’ve always just said, ‘God used me as a vessel. I’m just a vessel for this.’” – Jenny CONNECT: https://imanicollective.com/ About Jenny Nuccio: Jenny is the Founder and CEO of Imani Collective — a social enterprise + holistic women’s empowerment program in Mombasa, Kenya committed to breaking the generational poverty. An avid kiteboarder, triathlete, and boat captain for a whale-watch operation on the Big Island, Kelsey's love for challenge and adventure is a huge part of who she is. "I believe women are capable of anything they put their mind to, and I have tried to exemplify that truth statement in my life." Her heart to help others is ultimately the purpose of her existence, which has been cultivated in her love for Jesus. This passion to serve others birthed Moi Moi Market and The Talking Story Podcast. "We want to make it easy for consumers to find, trust, and purchase products of purpose; products that help women out of sex trafficking, provide clean water, build schools, clean plastics from our oceans, and empower families. Moi Moi Market (www.moimoimarket.com) is a one stop shop for those products which includes Imani Collective. The Talking Story Podcast is the educational piece that explains the story behind the product and just shares cool stories of people using their lives to make a difference in others." Although working full time, she believes in giving back to the community, and has served at Heart Ranch and Ho'ola Na Pua here on the Big Island, Hawaii. Even though life is busy, she still finds time to play and have fun. One of her favorite things to do is taking her dogs for walks at the beach. To Kelsey, "there's nothing like toes in the sand, listening to the ocean, and just BE-ing." @captkelseyhawaii  In this episode,Jenny and Kelsey talk about embracing the heart of altruism as clearly manifested in how the humpback whales thrive in the sea. They further talk about taking hold of your faith and believing that God’s love for you is eternal.Jenny Nuccio on the Talking Story Podcast

“If you wanna go to Mombasa, Kenya, call this number.” One glance at a bulletin board containing these words at the back of a crowded mega church was all it took for an adventure seeking 18-year-old to pack up and go. One trip led to two, two to three, until this born and raised Texan was selling her beloved truck and all she owned for a 7 month stay…and counting.  That was 8 years ago. Yep, Jenny Nuccio never left.  The initial trips allowed Jenny to collect stories of children for sponsorship profiles, but while doing so her eyes (and heart) shifted to another group, one working tirelessly in the background— their mothers. These women were walking miles and miles to sell fruit for mere pennies. Jenny’s heart was captivated by their struggle, and sat down with their village chief, in 16 women began learning to make handicrafts with Jenny, and along with their sewing machines (funded by Jenny’s truck) became the pillars of Imani Collective, an ethical business fueled by artisans thriving on salary wages. Other village members thought it was a hopeless cause, but these women put their trust in Jenny, their work, and believed big things would happen. Imani’s handmade household products are now being sold worldwide, and their more than 100 creators are now able to save, buy land, and send their children to school. Imani Collective and its founder challenge the trending subject of fair trade in this episode, exposing several underlying issues. Tune in- you’ll want to hear how Jenny went from 0 (“I’ve traveled outside the country now, can check that off the bucket list”) to 100 (“OK, I’m gonna move here now!”), how Imani was born, and how ethical trade vs. fair trade allows Imani to address the needs of its workers holistically. And yes, how a true blooded Texan came to “sell her treasure to fund her dream,” in the words of host Bob Waliszewski. You can visit imanicollective.com to learn more and purchase their products, and should you buy a product, you can even meet and write to the specific artisan who made it! Stay tuned for a special Imani product coming to Moi Moi Market this Fall. Amazingly, Jenny also hosts a podcast similar to this one.
